I have no problem with McCain choosing Palin. Now we just have to examine what her stance is on all of the critical issues of this election cycle. Seems to me her political views are way to the right and that we have a good old Red and Blue state rivalry again.

If folks think McCain will change much of anything, I would ask where's the proof? If he has a SPECIFIC view on our economic ails, energy policy, race relations, immigration, abortion, etc.,, I would like to hear it. He has not said a SPECIFIC thing yet. Palin seems to just want to make fun of Obama but has not offered anything even remotely substantive to even debate. I'd like to ask McCain, "where's the beef?!"

Seems to me her primary motivator in government has been fiscal responsibility.

I don't see Obama terminating the private chef or selling the fancy jet in favor of small aircraft that would be more efficient and functional in Alaska. In fact, didn't he buy a fancy airplane and design his own presidential seal and haul in what had to be an enormously expensive movie set for his acceptance speech?

Based on this alone, I would be more inclined to vote for McCain.

But I wouldn't vote for a man who admits using cocaine for years, so I wouldn't vote for Obama anyway.

This VP pick is a distraction. You all think her sex has nothing to do with any of it. Seriously, do you REALLY think McCain would have picked a man with the same qualifications as Palin? Get a grip. I want a smart president this time and when you look at Obama v McCain, the choice is clear. Obama is obviously much more intelligent. Let's do something great for our country and not vot YET again against our own best interests. McCain and Palin are fighters and that's the last thing we need in Washington - more fights.

Maybe I am from the wrong generation - too young?? But I grew up thinking that feminism was about empowering women - ALL women. Imagine my surprise as I have learned through this election that feminism is really about preserving the right to kill babies. If there is more to it someone needs to start talking about it, because that seems to be the only issue that matters to them.
When the Palin name came up, and the media began trashing her,I went to the NOW website to see what the "National Organization for Women" planned to do about this.......
So, as this plays out, I am learning just how conservative I am. Odd because I am a woman with an MBA, earn six figures and have a stay at home husband. On paper, I always thought I sounded "feminist". This election has taught me that my generation has nothing in common with feminists and the NOW.
I had never read any of Anna Quindlen's material before this week, but I think I have heard her say that Governor Palin shouldn't work with 5 kids, and now this. Odd..... who's the feminist and who is the sexist here?

    • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/08/2008 1:16:35 PM

ameliabedlia, you are a feminist, and have benefited from the work done by many women over the last decades. I applaud your husband's choice as well.

True feminism divides the home responsibilities not on the basis of what biological equipment you have, but on the personality, interests and skills of the individuals in the marriage.

      You go girl!

Excellent article Anna! If we keep showing how the Republicans are blatantly hypocritical, then hopefully the rose-colored glasses will come off. Palin has very little experience, unless you count "one-time beauty queen" and sports reporter as her shining moments. And let's be honest - she really only wants to further her husband's career by allowing more drilling, rather than the smart alternative of looking at ways to diminish our dependency on oil, both foreign and domestic. I'm sorry, but I see her as a redneck - and I'd rather have educated, thinking, intelligent people back in the White House. We need to get the jobless rate down, get people back in their houses, and have a plan for health care for all Americans. And oddly enough, I haven't heard anything from the Republicans that address the mistakes that their own party has committed in the last eight years under their president. Let's take care of our troops and bring them home. The Republicans have lied and depleted the rights of Americans - we shouldn't let them continue for four more years!

I used to support Hillary. Still have all the caps, t-shirts, etc., and I know about all the Obama thugs Daily Kos, Moveon.org and their horrible attacks. Now I see the same happening to Palin. I switched to the GOP after this repeat and I never felt so a home with a lady who refuses to be a victim. But this time the entire GOP has risen up to support a woman unlike the democrats. The GOP learned from the Hillary bashing. And this time the GOP has taken the liberal media on head to head and Herr Olbermann and Matthews have felt the pain.

    WELCOME BACK REAGAN DEMS.

the Dems have nominated a know nothing, sexist, malcontent and a do nothing for VP again!

    Sweet!

Really what is happening here is typical: The D's talk about putting women and minorities in power, the R's just do it with little or no talk.

With the D's it takes spending millions of dollars, approval from the ivy league elite, backroom promises they'll never step out of line or think on their own, etc...

With the R's, they simply notice that everyday people still matter and their perspective is no less because they aren't an attorney or a DC elitist.

Women are the backbone of the Republican party and always will be. The D's point out there aren't many women are minorty R's in Congress but fail to mention that everytime one gets in there, the D's spend all of their money and resources to beat them.

NOBAMA WORKED AS A "COMMUNITY ORGANIZER"!

That entails working for ACORN and committing voter fraud.

He also voted against banning infanticide.

    Torture a baby - coddle a terrorist.

No wonder NObama is tanking in the polls!

  • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/08/2008 1:09:42 PM

    The hypocrit cries hypocrisy.

It's wrong to refuse to ask questions about work and being a mother AQ says, in the same breath that she criticizes the republicans for having opposed women in the workplace.

The media, and especially democrats haven't asked these questions of a man in a similar circumstance, so how can they justify demanding that they be answered now?

If you want to ask why and how Palin juggles being a parent and working, the same questions should have been asked of Obama, who also has two young children.

As a lifelong democrat and social liberal, I am certainly surprised that the democratic candidate's personal choices reinforce the traditional "conservative" image of family responsibilities divided along gender lines with the woman responsible for childcare instead of it being a shared responsibility (has Obama ever attended a PTA meeting or held a PTA office? Did Michelle?) while the republican candidates seem content to challenge the pattern, McCain content that his wife holds the more highly valued position in the work world, and Palin's husband perfectly comfortable holding the baby.

Personal choice isn't the only issue for owmen. Neither is equal pay. We have to change society to change the way women are treated. Electing a woman to the VP job would move us a long way along that path.

Too bad the democrats didn't think it was important enough to move beyond the primary infighting. Of course Obama should have taken the lead there. If he was half the "unifier" he claims to be, it shouldn't have posed any problem at all to get HRC on his ticket.

But the truth is that Obama is not the one to unite us.

And if elected, McCain and Palin won't be able to get Roe v. Wade overturned without Democrats going along, because any judicial nominee would have to be approved by the democrats.

Why did Obama not put Hillary Clinton on the ticket? All other questions and answers are distractions. She got more vote than anyone else in the history of presidential primaries. What was her crime? By putting Biden on the ticket, Democratic party basically told us that we cannot have a Democratic woman in the white house for at least the next 16 years. Even 24 by their estimate. Surely the Democratic power brokers are counting on 8 years of Obama and then 8 years of Biden. After which the power would inevitably swing to the Republicans. If this is not insult upon injury for the women, what is? Basically the Democratic Party has decided to hold women hostage on the single issue of pro-choice. But I will vote for Palin because neither she nor McCain have ever acted on their social views while governing. That's it.

Take a look at the Community Advisors VP choice.

    What an idiot Biden is.

A 2 time loser for the Dem nomination

    Voted against freeing Kuwait

    Voted for the Iraq War

Voted against funding for the troops

Palin will destroy the do nothing Gasbag in the coming debates!

We're laughing, Anna. You're helping McCain/Palin get elected. The media backlash is building. You're look ing like a tragic, bitter, frightened and elite, wimp. Oh, since when is 100 days in the U.S. Senate (before declaring a bit for President) and being a community organizer a good resume for leadership of the U.S.?

  • Posted By: andreaj @ 09/08/2008 1:00:52 PM

Thanks, Anna. You're helping her get elected. The backlash is growing!

I've recently learned that being a feminist is only for the far left, it never was for all women. And since when has being a community organizer and 100 days in the U.S. Senate been a resume for being President. Get over it, Anna. She makes you look like an elite wimp.

God, I love that Palin. A woman who can haul fish nets, hunt caribou, raise kids who actually love her, kick ass on big oil, run a state with a 40 Billion budget, and now run for VP of the United States. That's a GOP feminist, a woman who refuses to be a victium unlike a liberal feminist, the enernal victium.

    • Posted By: HarleyDavidson @ 09/08/2008 1:00:23 PM

OOps victium? Victim seems to have gone liberal on me.

  • Posted By: Appman @ 09/08/2008 12:58:58 PM

The Dem female hero is Hillary.

Her experience amounts to being the wife of an impeached President.

    That's it folks!

Vote for Obama. It doesn't take him 26 years to get 26 years worth of experience.

Hillary won't do that. You write as if voters think carefully through these things. People choose their mates after 6 minute speed dating for goodness sake. You think choosing a president is more important than that? It's not.

  • Posted By: Dr. Wonder @ 09/08/2008 12:48:29 PM

Hillary won't say so. You write as if voters give these issues more than 5 minutes thought. For goodness sake, people choose their mates after 6 minute speedy introductions and you think they choose presidents more carefully. C'mon.

Ever hear of Condolezza Rice? The GOP is open to women and minorities in its highest positions. Ever hear of Mary Cheney? Did the GOP (right left or center) question a candidate having an openly lesbian daughter? Was she hidden away? No she was highly visible in 2000/2004. In fact it was Kerry, to his doom, that tried to exploit Mary Cheney's sexual orientation in the debates, by trying to drive a wedge between Christian conservatives and the Bush/Cheney Ticket. History shows, that failed. Republicans are not as black and white as liberals believe.
