As a conservative Latino, I've always been puzzle by liberals reactions when a woman or minority, be a black or Latino, gets picked or appointed to high positions of authority. It's almost as if they see those appointment as their rights to make not anyone else's, and God forbid is a Republican doing it.

obama is not qualified. Palin's resume makes his look like he just graduated ffrom high school, and she is just the VP candidate. Mccains resume makes obama look like the infant that he really is.

The Republicans using this woman in a desperate attempt to win the election is certainly no sign of a new-found embrace of Feminism on their part. She just fits their snide-mouthed, fear-mongering, gun-loving, child-bearing mold to a T. Oh that and she???s hot(?) WOW. That???s really what it???s come to in this once-great and noble land? Grandma Palin obviously can't even lead her own family. But at least she WAS capable of being trained to say "nuclear" in time for her first big appearance (a feat W never did master). ANY woman--no matter what party affiliation--who can???t see thru this blatant manipulation should do America a favor and stay home on election day. Those of you who can???t see that and really think she???s some kind of new savior, well you just keep kidding yourself. Just like you did about W.

As Quinlan well knows, Palin cited her PTA to explain how she entered politics, not to evidence executive experience.

If Quinlan does not bother to be accurate, why should we believe she bothers to be thoughtful or fair?

    • Posted By: muffinb @ 09/08/2008 12:19:44 PM

I do not call being on the PTA for a elementary school with very few children, and not being an officer of the PTA getting into politics. That is just plain stupid. Hell most women I know that have children join the PTA, that doesn't put them in politics. That is what is so stupid with her bringing up that comment in her resume.

One can't help but wonder if all this new-found feminism in some conservative circles is cover for a new kind of racism....."We'll vote for anyone, anyone who is 100% white."

    • Posted By: Frodo1945 @ 09/08/2008 11:17:14 AM

An Obamaite follower of the pre-emptive racism statement. Think of something better to say.

What you have written makes no sense.

The PROBLEM with Palin is that she doesn't walk her talk. SImple as that. She is pro-life --but wait, let some else raise that life; she is pro-family --but wait, don't mention that she is an absent mother. She is for abstinence only sex education --but heck, kids will be kids! that pregnant daughter of hers is off limits. For me to respect Gov. Palin she will have to start walking the narrow road her relgion and values have set out for her --and like it. Or, if she wants the choices that real feminists have fought for-- she better change her tune and start talking the walk she's already walking.....

    • Posted By: rdmartinjd @ 09/08/2008 12:18:30 PM

So if I follow your comment correctly, you're saying that you can't be a pro-life woman if you work, and therefore presumably, if you're a working woman, you must abort your children. And of course that means that only liberal women can have jobs, and all conservative women have to be home, barefoot and pregnant, or they're hypocrites.

Yep, that sounds exactly like the Feminazi crowd we've all come to know and love. Don't let the door hit your butts on the way out: no one's buying anymore.

When liberals cry "Hypocrisy!" they seldom follow with anything that meets the definition. Quinlan MOSTLY carries on this tradition. Opposition to affirmative action is not sexist. (Actually, the opposite is closer to the truth.) Defending Palin against those who question whether a mother of five can perform her job is not sexist. (Again, more like the opposite.) And choosing life while opposing abortion is hypocritical only for those laboring under the burdens of abortion's inconsistencies. And then she asserts without evidence that Republicans labeled questions about Palin's experience as sexist.

But the one legitimate question of hypocrisy here concerns the position of Dobson, who has indeed encouraged mothers of young children to stay at home. Or more accurately, not to abandon their kids to the care of others. But in that distinction lies a potential answer to Quinlan. Will Palin leave her baby to others? Something tells me that the resources of the VP's office may offer her options not available.

All's Fair writes: "One can't help but wonder if all this new-found feminism in some conservative circles is cover for a new kind of racism....."We'll vote for anyone. . who is 100% white." Don't worry All;s Fair; I've never met a conservative who would not happily vote for a black, such as Condoleeza Rice, for Clarence Thomas, for Michael Steele, for Kenneth Blackwell, for J C Watts . . . oh, and did you notice that they are all blacks active in public life? They just don't happen to 'know their place' the way liberals would wish them to conform.

    • Posted By: All's Fair @ 09/08/2008 11:07:00 AM

"Their place" certainly wasn't at your big national convention, was it? Words, words, words--but no action. "Great job, Brownie", but nothing great for brown people.

      • Posted By: cubeman4 @ 09/08/2008 11:25:58 AM

It's probable the Michael Steel, Kenneth Blackwell, and JC Watts attended the Republican convention along with many other black Republicans. The other two don't want to appear overly partisan. You should check your facts before you make broad statements.

Obviously the fact that most black people are Democrats means there will be more at the Democratic convention, but it doesn't mean Republicans are racist against black people any more than the Democratic party is racist against white people for having fewer white delegates.

        • Posted By: All's Fair @ 09/08/2008 12:17:07 PM

You obviously did not watch the conventions and do not read newspapers. I can't debate with someone who doesn't know anything.

As a Latino I've always found fascinating how liberals react when faced with a minority member appointed, or picked to a position of power by conservatives.. It's almost as if they are shocked that the person(s), Blacks, Latinos, women, or any other minority can only achieved anything due to their efforts alone. Apparently, if they are not liberal in their politics, they are not really, black or Latino or, heck, even a woman. Quindlen's ironically

The right wing christians are salivating at the bit finally they will have their shot at trying to convert the whole nation to their narrow minded way of thinking, and God forbid anyone to stand against what they believe is right beacouse of course they are the chosen few everyone else will burn in hell!!!

    • Posted By: llittlef @ 09/08/2008 11:56:30 AM

Why is it that when conservative say what they believe its "narrow minded?" That's exactly how you sound with these comments.

Does the truth sting? Sorry didn't mean to ruffle your feathers little hen just stay in line.

I am not surprised at all. Republicans have never been opposed to strong female leadership - only to the leftist aspects of the feminist movement. Sarah Palin is an accomplished, conservative leader that just happens to be female, so it is no surprise that she would be on the Republican ticket. Ironically, liberals are always labeling folks by gender and ethnicity, whereas conservatives look more at the individual's accomplishments and ideas.

A perfect case in point is Condoleeza Rice. Republicans do not consider her gender (or ethnicity), only that she is very effective in her role.

  • Posted By: fairandbalancedma @ 09/08/2008 12:13:15 PM

Let's read this one more time and ask ourselves a question. Is this a fair and balanced article, or an attack? Hmmmm....

  • Posted By: rdmartinjd @ 09/08/2008 12:12:41 PM

All other issues aside, "How do we beat the bitch" is not sexist, any more than "how do we beat the SOB" would be sexist: it is purely a statement of distaste for the opponent. That Quindlen sees it otherwise demonstrates the lengths to which she's grasping: "see, we media types and Feminazis aren't being sexist against Governor Palin, anything we say is really the Republicans' fault." Which is just another way of saying "It's okay to be sexist against a Republican." Which is itself yet another variant of "We can say ANYTHING about a Republican, or all of them collectively."

Fine if you want, Newsweek. But you just managed to convince most of America that you're not real journalists anymore. And that will cost you both your bully pulpit and your revenue base. Stupid move.

  • Posted By: jburack @ 09/08/2008 12:11:28 PM

Your surprise is a function of your utter ignorance. NONE of the views you attribute to the conservative Republican strawman of your imagination has been true of the vast majority of the conservative movement for years. Which is why the Palin pick did not provoke a "surprising metamorphosis," but was hoped for for weeks or months prior to it being announced. Your surpise is a measure ot the pathetic inadequacy of your own demonized destortion of the right. Moreover, your ignorance of the powerful socially conservative tendency within American feminism going back 150 years is also astounding.

  • Posted By: Appman @ 09/08/2008 12:08:37 PM

Ah the new face of real feminism is Palin ...

Hillary -Quinlen - Pelosi - Steinaem and Olberman are remnants of the 1960's!

We bid them a "Good riddance and don't let the door hit ya in that fat ass"!

  • Posted By: hnesbit @ 09/08/2008 12:04:51 PM

Amazing! There were more facts in this article than a whole issue of National Enquirer. I'm so glad we have liberals out there to balance the truth with... with.. uh...

What garbage!! This is another example of the liberal medias bias against ANYONE who is Republican.By the way Anna, how are Newsweeks subsvription rates been the last six months?Going down the old toilet, just like youe candidate Obama.NObama 08.And keep the change

After reading your editorial I feel that you too are only tolerant of those who tolerate you views. The tone of this piece puts you at the same level you feel the religious is at. Why bother lifting your head above the fray when you can dig in just at deep.
