It saddens me to see Anna attacking Palin. Year after year we see unqualified men (ie: Obama) getting nominated for office -- the list would be long, including the Current Occupant. But who gets the shrill and outrageous chorus of attacks -- Hillary Clinton (experience and capable) and Sara Palin (just as experienced as Bush, and in the opinion of half the electorate, more so than Obama). Anna, save your fire. Women are at the bottom. We need to support our own.

I am a woman in my mid 30's fitting the demographic that supposedly Sarah Palin is able to sway: Catholic, fiscally conservative, moderate democrat. I find her nomination to be reprehensible and insulting to American women. She stands on the shoulders of the women whose work she will undoubtedly undercut if she manages to get into office. Ms. Palin is simply the puppet of this election, as George Bush was in the past. The people who will still be running the country, if McCain/Palin are elected, are Karl Rove and all of his horrendous cronies. It's time for people to wake up and realize what the ultimate spin-doctor, Rove, is up to AGAIN! Anna Quindlen - - thank you for your critical thought and bravery. Keep it up!

For a female professional to reduce another female governor's accomplishments to simply PTA service reveals her own hypocrisy in supporting women in political life. The real hypocrisy revealed in this election is that women only support liberal women for political office. For you to judge and insult a female candidate's personal life in your article demonstrates your own lack of judgment and media bias. No one thinks Clinton's supporters will blindly support a candidate simply because she is a woman, but it is certainly kind of her to reach out to them to offer her views about many of the issues they care about including energy, the economy and national security.

sam, I disagree. I am very opposed to this woman being VP and as I learn more about her (the onion peeling thing) the more scared I am for our country should the republican ticket be elected, not because of Hillary, but only because of the far right fringe beliefs and the amoral in office actions of this woman. She may want to refor, but reforming by using tactics matching or worse than the people she is hellbent on bring about reform from does not make a respectable leader. Its a simple matter of using your power to overpower others who are not of your belief system. We live in a pluralistic society and not one that is just of her narrow ideology. She wants to make all of us belong to her ideology and that is the scariest part of allowing her into a position of power like VP, and potentially President, God forbid.

The liberal democrats are just as much to blame for saying one thing and then ignoring the same thing when it's convenient. That's her whole point: Republicans say one thing and ignore it when convenient. I think she is stretching it a bit, but she got her agenda.

Hillary supporters are angry at the choice of Palin. They erroneously assume the McCain camp wants to buy their vote. Truth be told, they're angry because they want their cake (a woman on the ticket) and they want to eat their cake too (a woman who is liberal). You see they have their cake, but it's not palatable, thus setting them off .

Example: If you really wanted an ipod, and your boyfriend bought you a stereo system with awesome speakers (at a much higher price) you would propably be pisst. You have a system that plays music, but not the kind you want. Not the best example, (this one is frivolous) but all the rutkus over Palin has less to do with her than it has to do with the unresolved internal issues of Hillary supporters. And quite frankly, I'm sick of it.

    Who's better for women?
A watchdog group called LegiStorm posts online the salaries for Capitol Hill staffers. "We have no political affiliations and no political purpose except to make the workings of Congress as transparent as possible," its website explains. Parsing LegiStorm's official data, gleaned from the Secretary of the Senate, offers a fascinating glimpse at pay equity in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body.
The most recent statistics are for the half-year from October 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008, excluding interns and focusing on full-time personnel. For someone who worked only until, say, last February 29, extrapolating up to six months' service simplifies this analysis. Doubling these half-year figures illustrates how a year's worth of Senate employees' paychecks should look.
Based on these calculations, Obama's 28 male staffers divided among themselves total payroll expenditures of $1,523,120. Thus, Obama's average male employee earned $54,397.
Obama's 30 female employees split $1,354,580 among themselves, or $45,152, on average.
Why this disparity? One reason may be the under-representation of women in Obama's highest-compensated ranks. Among Obama's five best-paid advisors, only one was a woman. Among his top 20, seven were women.
Again, on average, Obama's female staffers earn just 83 cents for every dollar his male staffers make. This figure certainly exceeds the 77-cent threshold that Obama's campaign website condemns. However, 83 cents do not equal $1.00. In spite of this 17-cent gap between Obama's rhetoric and reality, he chose to chide GOP presidential contender John McCain's 17 male staffers split $916,914, thus averaging $53,936. His 25 female employees divided $1,396,958 and averaged $55,878.
On average, according to these data, women in John McCain's office make $1.04 for every dollar a man makes. In fact, all other things being equal, a typical female staffer could earn 21 cents more per dollar paid to her male counterpart -- while adding $10,726 to her annual income -- by leaving Barack Obama's office and going to work for John McCain.
    How could this be?
One explanation could be that women compose a majority of McCain's highest-paid aides. Among his top-five best-compensated staffers, three are women. Of his 20-highest-salaried employees, 13 are women. The Republican presidential nominee relies on women -- much more than men -- for advice at the highest, and thus, best-paid levels.

Hello my name is Nina and i am writing to about "the Caucasian card" on page 70 from august... I am Caucasian and i have alot of "black" friends and if you were to ask who are they voting for and why, they would say Obama and you ask why and they will say because he is "black... Most of the people that vote have no clue what is going on with the campaign or why there even voting for the person they are voting for.. I'm not saying that Barack is fully playing the race card but I know if he wins that's why. "black' people want to live to see a black president and that's all it is... And as far a a Caucasian card I wish there was one when I needed medicaid for myself and my son when I was 17 and busting my but to keep food on the table and I was denied for anything.. come on I worked at wendy's how much could I have made. But when I walked in to the welfare building the whole place was full of "blacks" who had more jewelry on then i have ever owned in my life and my son and i get denied for just medicaid please I'm sick of hearing I"M BLACK GIVE ME> When i don't have enough for myself n I bust my but everyday... The point is please if Barack wins its only because hes black... i live in the real world I don't know where you live...thank You

THE ABOVE POST MAYBE THE MOST IGNORANT POST EVER TYPED.

      1. HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT BLACKS HAVE VOTED FOR THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE FOR PRESIDENT AT A 90% RATE SINCE WE COULD VOTE.

      2. HOW ABOUT THAT FACT THAT MAYBE BLACKS JUST HAVE THIS ONE CORRECT. 50 MILLION WHITES VOTED FOR THE WORST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY. I DON'T WANT TO HEAR THAT RACE BULL LIKE WHITES HAVE NEVER DONE IT. WHITES IN SOUTHERN OHIO (WHERE THE KLAN STILL MARCHES) STILL THINK THE OBAMA IS FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY

      3. YOUR DUMBASS FRIENDS DON'T REPRESENT ALL BLACKS NO MORE THAN DAN QUAYLE REPRESENTS ALL WHITES

      4. THERE ARE 3 TIMES MORE WHITES ON WELFARE PERCENTAGE WISE AND GROSS NUMBERS THAN BLACKS. I'M SURE THERE WEREN'T ANY THERE WHERE YOU WERE AT OF COURSE.

      5. BLACKS ALONE CAN'T ELECT A PRESIDENT. WE ONLY MAKE UP 8% OF THE POPULATION

      6. MAYBE BLACKS WANT A PRESIDENT WHO GRADUATED AT THE TOP OF HARVARD LAW INSTEAD OF AT THE BOTTOM(894/899) OF THE NAVY ACADEMY

      7. MAYBE BLACKS WANT A PERSON WHO HAD TO STRUGGLE FOR EVERYTHING INSTEAD OF SOMEONE FROM A NAVY ADMIRAL'S FAMILY WHO GOT INTO SCHOOL BASED OFF THAT

      8. MAYE BLACKS WANT SOMEONE WHO WILL GIVE TAX BREAKS TO 95% OF THE NATION INSTEAD OF JUST TO THE TOP 2-5%.

      9. MAYBE BLACKS WANTS SOMEONE WHO HAS A PERFECT RATING ON WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND NOT A DAMN 0 ON WOMEN'S RIGHTS LIKE MCCAIN.

      10. MAYBE BLACKS WANT SOMEONE WHO KNEW ATTACKING IRAQ FOR 9-11 IS EQUIVALENT TO ATTACKING CANADA FOR PEARL HARBOR.

This comment is for Nina:, Hello Nina, Your anger is understandable, and if you look at which candidate and which party has been and will continue to be working for your self interests, it's Obama and the Democratic Party. Take that anger and do something effective with it. Get as many people to vote for Barack Obama as you can. Obama may be black, but that is not what qualifies him to be the best choice in this election. He's a problem solver not a problem maker. Mc Cain is has a proven record of more of the same Bush policies of "let the little guy pay and suffer for the benefit of big oil intrests" and if they can get the little guys like you and me to fight amounst ourselves, all the better - they can get away with even more lining of their pockets at public (yours and mine) expense. Be brave, be your best self, be for yourself, vote for Obama. Ta There's only one world, and we're all in it. Bless you.

Nina, I have alot of white friends who wont vote for Obama- i Iask them why? Hes black!
Even my own parents agree - he more qualified, more intelligent, more likely to bring world peace and they tell me, "we just cant vote for a black man!" Keep voting for those challeged intelletuals that graduate at the bottom of their perspective classes- crusty, stoic lemmings whos failed policies are plain enough to see and now feel too!
I guess your pocket book, health care, education, and careless attitude for more arbitrary war is closer to Mccain- because you will reap what you sew- he will not dissapoint the mongers and the haters!

It never ceases to amaze me that philosophers, scholars, and writers in droves write about the current fleecing of our constitution our nation, and the American middle class all the while conservatives continue to flock to right wing evangelists, tabloid pundits and GOP theology after all that has happen to uor nation.
7 and a half years of GOP subversion. What does tha nation have to show? An economy in shambles unfinished wars more on the horizon and debt so enormous China and other foreign countries now own much of our nations remaining equity!

Conservatism is a dismal failure, all the proof is in your house equity, your bank accounts, your paycheck, it???s on Wallstreet, its on the shelves of your supermarket, its on the corner gas station, its in job and house lose, its on the streets and in the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan.
They have failedour nation before our eyes and they tell us we cany see theother choice because of the color of his skin!

BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO ANNA!!!!! How can Palin claim to be a true feminist when she wants to deny all women their right to choose? AND How can one attend a church that rallys is parishoners to Pray Away the Gay? So much for respecting individualism.

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/11/2008 11:13:03 AM

That's an oversimplification based on wedge issues. Let's see what Palin's policy opinions are related to those and other issues.

      • Posted By: katypk @ 09/16/2008 9:54:29 AM

Agree, I would love to hear what her actual policy opinions are. Problem is, the McCain campaign will never let her voice them. She is obviously "sticking to the script" and it's not going to help them in the long run.

  • Posted By: targa @ 09/06/2008 4:24:08 PM

so, you no longer care about women's rights once it is a Republican woman who is running. Just for the record, I'm not at all surprised.

    • Posted By: readingnews @ 09/07/2008 3:48:37 PM

Hysterically funny if not so sad. It isn't about Palin being a woman it is about the Republican party suddenly embracing the full time working mother and out of wedlock childbrith which they used to put down. Applauding Palin's and her daughter's 'choice' and at the same time wanting to disallow other women's choice. Read the article again.

      • Posted By: llittlef @ 09/08/2008 11:54:48 AM

Who says anyone is embracing out of wedlock childbirth? Just because they aren't judging and condeming her? I think its finally a mature audience that is saying, 'hey, life throws you curveballs, and you just have to deal." And who, exactly, is disallowing any women's choices? You think its hypocrisy for a working women to be conservative? Get real. There are plenty of women out there who have conservative values and work. Guess what - its life and you deal with it. Why is abortion so pivotal to women's rights? Believe it or not there is more to a woman than getting pregnant.

        • Posted By: allison florance @ 09/15/2008 12:30:01 PM

In fact, more conservative women are working in higher paying jobs and higher level jobes because they do get it. Have a stand, support it, deal with the curveballs upfront and honestly, get on with life instead of spewing toxic words.

I'm in the middle - listening to both sides - but so far all I see from the right is anger (read the many outrageously angry emails below) - while the left at least is trying to have a civilized conversation. I will say this - I will not go along with any hysterical rants on either side - I just want an intelligent debate on the issues. At this point Obama's group is far more appealing simply because they are not raving mad at the other side. The Right should learn from them.

How many soldiers and airmen does the mayor of Poughkeepsie supervise? How many barrels of oil and cubic feet of natural gas are beneath Poughkeepsie? How many $40 billion pipelines has the mayor of Poughkeepsie started? The obvious condescension of liberal feminists and the liberal media is backfiring, and it may well bring about a Republican win in an election that a month ago seemed out of reach for Republicans. Write some more columns like this one. Republicans appreciate the help.

There is very little possiblity that Hillary will do much of anything to promote the ideology vs biology argument as she has very little interest in the election of Obama. His loss means a clean sweep for her in 2012. Keeping in mind that I am a man, which of course means that it is impossible that I have any sensibilies toward women's issues, I believe that the real problem feminists are having with Gov. Palin is that she embodies the possibilities of a woman in the highest executive offce ( sorry, Geraldine, but you never really had a chance in 1984) without embracing the classic feminist agenda. Yet it seems to me that she represents the fullest embodyment of feminisim buy being free to have her own believes and living them.

In response to Anna Quindlen, The Last Word Newsweek 9/15/08

???Strong women roared in silence. We roared by doing.??? Judy Blunt from Breaking Clean

I always thought that I would live long enough to see a nonfeminist women break through the so-called feminist ???ceilings???. It is no surprise that an ascribed feminist would not break through. The feminist strategy is winner take all, take men to task and drag them down, kick them while they are there and laugh at them while doing it. The feminist agenda is black and white, self-righteous and has no room for religion because they are their own religious cult.

I have often pondered if I were merely a benefactor of the feminist movement, quota filler, due to landing a coveted, high paying job in an all male, good old boy office. I am a Montana cowgirl that had to make my own way because there were male offspring to take over the ranch. No whining here. I just took it as a challenge. I got my education, landed a job far away from Montana and far beyond me, and wondered, ???why me???? Initially, I gave 100% credit to the feminist movement. Several decades have now passed and I think at most the feminist movement raised awareness of women as capable of working along side men but they were never going to get hired for the job with all the toxic spew that they continuously felt compelled to share out loud.

After reading the job offer a second time, I immediately set out to figure out how to fit in, be grateful, do a better job than anyone else, earn respect, work hard, help people in the company look good and show that I could add more to the bottom line than I cost.

Anna, your focus on ???hypocrisy, direct result of the women???s movement, sexism,??? and the like may win a few battles. In the mean time, Sarah Palin is confident in her morals and ideals. Direct and straight forward in what life has provided her in the way of challenges in her pregnant daughter or Down???s son. Sarah Palin did not change her foundation due to life???s challenges, She has embraced the challenges that so many of us face or will face and used them as further evidence of her conviction without any ands, ifs, or buts. Sarah Palin???s can-do, roaring-by-doing focus on the most important things is what wins wars.

  • Posted By: zsm2010 @ 09/14/2008 3:11:00 PM

Talk about hypocrisy and double standards ??? If governor Palin???s pro-life stance is an invasion of personal family choices, then I don???t what to say about Obama???s economic proposals. Obama???s ???95% tax cuts??? and promises of hundreds of dollars to millions of Americans certainly do not come out of his personal bank-account ??? obviously, they come out of everyone else???s ???oh wait, not everyone else???s ??? only the wealthys???. Where is the flaw here? Obama???s proposals do not allow the wealthy to choose how to spend their money. What if they chose to buy a shiny new car, or to send their kid through private school? Isn???t that their right to chose? Ms. Quindlen, How can it be wrong to forbid a woman from making choices about her body, when she believes it???s right, but okay to force citizens to make choices with their finances, when you believe it???s right?

WHEN THE LIBERAL ELITE "MAIN STREAM MEDIA" INJECTS ITSELF INTO A NATIONAL US ELECTION, IT LEADS TO THE "LAW OF UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES"

IF THERE'S WAS NO "MSM" BIAS AGAINST HILLARY, HILLARY WOULD BE THE US PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AND OBAMA WOULD BE THE VP CANDIDATE

IF THE TICKET IS CLINTON/OBAMA.....THERE IS NO SARAH PALIN EFFECT

IF THERE IS NO SARAH PALIN, THERE IS MCCAIN/ROMNEY REPUB TICKET

THEREFORE, THERE WOULD BE 8 YEARS OF CLINTON/OBAMA ADMINISTRATION

THEREFORE, THERE WOULD BE 8 YEARS OF OBAMA/KEANE ADMINSTRATION

BY US LIBERAL ELITE MEDIA BACKING OBAMA AND TRASHING HILLARY, THEY LOSE A POSSIBLE 16 YEARS IN POWER AND WILL PROBABLY NOW LOSE 8 OUT OF THE LAST 11 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS.

FOR YOU ANNA, NO AMOUNT OF OLBERMANN/MADDOW HISTRONICS CAN CUT THROUGH WHAT THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD ELECTORATE SEES IN THE "MSM"
