Sadly, we live in a country where Republicans will vote for Republicans and where Democrats will vote for Democrats no matter who is on the ticket. For twenty-plus years, I was an Independent who voted the candidate, not the party. However, given the state of the country--economically, socially, internationally--I declared Democrat this year. I agree with Quindlen that Palin's nomination was frightening in the extreme, not necessarily because of who she is, but because McCain seems to have chosen her in a fit of pique. Do you want your President to make decisions in this haphazard way? Do you want a President who lacks control over his anger to the point that he must apologize to colleagues for cursing at them? Is this how your workplace operates? We have a serious image problem in the international community--in a world growing more and more dangerous. Having both a cowboy and a cowgirl out there shooting off their mouths scares me to death. I want a President with intellect, with control, with superior communication skills. I want a President who will surround himself with people who disagree with him, just to make sure he has considered all sides. I want a President who is above petty power-trips and general nastiness to those who disagree.

This is America. There are no perfect people--and certainly those who come close probably don't wish to be President--but we certainly deserve the best and brightest, the reasonable and logical, the honorable and understanding. John McCain is a bonafide hero, and Sarah Palin certainly seems to be an agressive go-getter, but they are not the people for America right now. I want to be proud of my America.

You got it wrong when you said that people vote along party lines. Some Democrats will vote for Republicans but there isn't a republican with conservative ideology out there that would vote Democrat. The ideology is too powerful to accept the lies of the liberals that have taken over the Democratic party. Independent is Democrat. When you are a conservative you know it. It has nothing to do with religion, by the way, as most liberals assume.

      • Posted By: Moderation_in_all_things @ 09/11/2008 8:13:03 AM

Is being a staunch conservative reason enough to continue the way we are headed? Can anyone look around the country and say the Republicans (i.e., GWB) have improved the quality of anyone's life or the safety of the world? We need balance. After eight Republican years, let's have eight Democrat years and see where we are. Think back to when Clinton left office--wasn't the country in better shape?

        • Posted By: colddeadhands @ 09/11/2008 10:33:15 AM

No. It was teetering on teh brink from Clinton sleeping at the wheel. While Clinton was busy being censured for perjury, he vetoed the opportunity to take out Bin Laden. You know what happened next. 9/11/01.
Then the dot com bubble was hyperinflating the economy and that was an axe waiting to drop. Clinton was a joke and an embarrassment.

          • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/11/2008 11:14:40 AM

Clinton tried to kill Bin Laden in 1998 before most people had ever heard of him. Why blame Clinton for Bush's mess?

        • Posted By: colddeadhands @ 09/11/2008 10:38:43 AM

Back to your stupid questions- I will answer the first by saying why do you look to the government to improve your quality of life? Why don't you do it yourself?
As far as the world as a safer place... Are you that dense? Have we been attacked lately? Besides al Qaeda Iraq was the biggest threat and now they aren't. Iran is next in line and N. Korea after that. Those have to be defused by the next elected president. Who's best for that? Obama? He's a joke. No street cred on the international stage. we are weaker with him at the helm. Libs just don't get it.

Sarah Palin is just a party doll. Let the Repubs parade her for her 15 mins of fame. The Presidential Idol show will soon be over once she debates Biden, someone who actually knows whats goin on in Iraq and doesnt ask 'What a VP does?"

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/11/2008 11:11:47 AM

Not saying that is my view, but a similar argument could be made about Obama. I am disappointed he didn't accept offers to debate Hillary more, to engage in town hall meetings with McCain, and to wait until September to interview with Bill O'Reilly. For a relative unknown on a national level, his campaign has been too scripted. He hasn't taken necessary risks. Let;s see if Palin makes the same mistake

Im a guy and I am happy to say I have 1 daughter and another on the way. This is a red herring that far left and right are maing such a huge thing out of. IF you want choice then choose. I am an opponent of abortion as it is only in the frame that it has become a easy way out for allot of women and men as well. If the woman is raped or a case of incest or mothers health I'm in the corner of the option of abortion but not just because it is inconvienient and someone doesnt want to take responsibility for their actions. It has become too easy to have this done and should be reviewed only in this limited area. I know I will be yelled at for this as not in touch but stop and think you are 25 get pregnant and decide its a bother so you go to a place and get rid of your future child. This scenario is the one I have a problem with as for the rest I'm on the side of choice but not as a drive though procedure. Submitted as your whipping post but I do look forward to hearing from those it affects and getting information that may change my thoughts on this at this point in time.

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/11/2008 11:06:45 AM

I agree with the point the left's ranting about abortion only hurts the left. There has been a Supreme Court decision defending a woman's right to chose for more than 35 years, and that decision has been upheld many times. It is unlikely to be overturned, regardless of anyone's opinion.
However, the right wing has capitalized on making it an issue. The left wing has lost out becuase too quickly their pro-choice stance is morphed into pro-abortion and infanticide.
People can be pro-life but still believe the government doesn't belong in our uteruses.

A nasty ill-educated woman succeeding instead of women like Hillary is the worst type of example for our daughters.

Obamas story inspires hard working kids of all sexes and colors. Palin's degrades them.

    • Posted By: sockrmommy @ 09/11/2008 10:43:36 AM

A woman like Hilary? OH, I see...a woman who LET her husband cheat on her for YEARS so she could use nannies to raise her ONE child and get ahead in the business world? I don't call that feminism. Feminism is for the advancement and enpowerment OF WOMEN. Not the systematic degradation of them and their offspring. A femisnist raises her own children....a feminist doesn't go-along with a husband who is a flagrant philanderer! LOL Nice try though!

One of Hillary's delegates at the DNC who was an african american woman did not feel inspired by Obama, she said in a live interview on the floor of the DNC that she could not connect with him.

Can I say sexist??? Yes, and it spells "A-N-N-A Q-U-I-N-D-L-E-N".... Some fun reading below

    Left Turn

If the selection of Sarah Palin sent the American left around the bend, the effect seems to have been even stronger on the Canadian left. Columnist and author Heather Mallick, a regular contributor to the notoriously liberal Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, writes that Palin "added nothing to the ticket that the Republicans didn't already have sewn up, the white trash vote, the demographic that sullies America's name inside and outside its borders yet has such a curious appeal for the right."

In an earlier column Mallick referred to McCain as a "tiny old hateful man" who "named the political equivalent of his local school crossing guard as his vice presidential candidate."

  • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/09/2008 12:55:24 PM

Palin is pro-life, even in the case of rape, and opposes same-sex marriage and favors the discussion of creationism alongside evolution in schools. But she hasn't pushed for legislative changes in any of those areas.

The Associated Press reported Sept 3: "Palin's children attend public schools and Palin has made no push to have creationism taught in them. ... It reflects a hands-off attitude toward mixing government and religion by most Alaskans."

She even vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships because she said it was unconstitutional.

That says plenty. It shows she knows the limits of government, and believes that government isn't there to tell us what to do.

Obama seems more inclined to use government to control what choices we have than Palin does. Check out HR 800 and see what the democrats are up to while we're all talking about Palin. They are trying to eliminate the secret ballot in union elections. How unAmerican is THAT?????

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/09/2008 3:17:20 PM

Lets see how Palin's personal views differ from her policy views. Thusfar she hasn't been a radical governor. I'm curious to see how she does once the tough interviews start.

      • Posted By: Uncle_vito @ 09/11/2008 6:34:26 AM

you stated: It shows she knows the limits of government, and believes that government isn't there to tell us what to do.

Right on. That is becuase she is a good, practicing, Republican.

    TRANSLATION:
    "If you're a Republican, you'd better learn."
What AQ is saying here is this :She is the the morality police, the feminist spokesperson. She has the rights to the feminist mantra and anyone else will have hot oil dumped on them if they try to scale that wall in a skirt. AQ and the liberal elite have worked too hard to have someone else steal their thunder.
"The right wing that trashed the women's movement....."
The conservatives- both men AND WOMEN who did not like her and Steinem's approach as man-hating bra-burning militant hyenas
    "suddenly finds its inner feminist."
has succeeded at something she could not accomplish with her approach, therefore they will cry foul and tear at others' accomplishments until the nation sees that the feminists are right and everyone else is wrong. Only left wing feminists get to decide which women can succeed and how they can do so. Anything else just isn't fair.

I am a 34 -year veteran high school teacher of various courses in human growth and development, one of which is a course on family systems and interpersonal dynamics. I am beyond 'appalled' at Sara Palin's stance on family values and am disgusted with various folks' insistence that when we talk about the candidates we must 'stick to the issues'. Sara Palin's 'prol-life choices' and her family dynamics are very much a central issue in this
presidential campaign. I have spent the better part of my professional career empowering high-school age youth to to engage in healthy , open dialogues about sexual risk and relationship health. For Sara Palin to front her 17-year old daughter and her boyfriend on the national stage sends a powerful and devastating message to young adults across the nation. It also blatantly disregards, in my opinion, the many young adults who will 'accidentally' become pregnant and who will remain under-skilled, under-educated, and under-supported. I seek an honest, strong role model in a national leader. Palin is neither honest about her values; nor is she the leader that I would like young women (my daughter?) to aspire to!

    • Posted By: colddeadhands @ 09/11/2008 5:40:17 AM

Imagine the backlash if she had tried to hide her pregnant daughter away. It would be out of character anyway. Hey, this gives you a great forum in your classroom to discuss a pro-life stance! Make sure you mention how divine it was that The Messiah's mama didn't abort him at age 17 when she got pregnant. Then you could comment on how unfortunate it is that the Palins didn't abort the child. They really make our country look bad. "Devastating" as you put it. Terrible family values, huh? Allowing everyone to live. Loving every member of the family, supporting them. Terrible, indeed. Look in the mirror.

    • Posted By: RedGuyinbluestate @ 09/10/2008 10:15:54 PM

Should Palin have hidden her pregnant daugther? Tell me when does the witch tril begin? I am glad I am not in your class.

    • Posted By: Uncle_vito @ 09/10/2008 10:02:32 PM

Another whiner. The pregnancy was accidental and obviously not the preferred situation. Like most mothers, SP is not going to throw her child out of the house. Too bad your 'outrage' is total overkill. Most folks, including me, do not consider it a big deal. If you are outraged, then you need to get a life and chill out a bit.

White trash voter, lunch box voter, dumb vote, Wal-Mart vote,........... and now "values voter".

    Ya gotta love it.

But make no mistake, this is a very powerful force. All you have to do is tap into it, and you can win.

Rove will ensure that this will be another close one.

By the way, did you see any colored folks at the republican convention?

  • Posted By: itsjustmyopinion @ 09/10/2008 11:16:14 PM

I voted for Hillary in the primary and was disappointed that she was not the VP pick. But I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot by voting for Mccain/Palin. Plus, having Hillary on the ticket would not have guaranteed a win - the Republicans have had years to come up with dirty tricks to use against her and no doubt they would have gone all out. Keep to the facts - look seriously at the education, service, and experience of the candidates. Think about banks that fail, bridges that fall, levees that break, high unemployment and inflation, schools that don't educate, disappearing health insurance - the list goes on. Don't let the Rebublicans trick you with smoke and mirrors.

Sarah Palin never tried to ban any books. In response to multiple inquiries, the City of Wasilla has now issued a statement which includes a list of the Wasilla Public Library challenged books -- all four of them. All four of the challenges occurred either years before or years after Palin was a member of the city council (1992-1996) or was mayor (1996-2002).

    Here are the four books:

    Year of Challenge: Pre-1986
Item Challenged: Angel Dust Blues by Todd Strasser
Result: Creation of "Young Adult" section in library and placement of item in section

    Year of Challenge: 1986
Item Challenged: Bumps in the Night by Harvey Allard
    Result: Remained on shelf

    Year of Challenge: 2005
Item Challenged: America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction by Jon Steward (sic)
    Result: Remained on shelf

    Year of Challenge: 2007
Item Challenged: The Abduction by Mette Newth
    Result: Remained on shelf

It's been officially vetted. She did ask the librarian if she would follow thru and remove books that Palin deemed objectionable. The librarian said absolutely not. Palin then moved to fire the librarian because she 'doesn't like people that aren't supportive' . The town started a recall because they were so outraged and the librarian was not fired.

Palin seems to like to employ very heavy handed control tactics. I find them repugnant.

I really dislike the bullies who come onto blogs screaming that one side or the other is totally biased. I would like to see everyone get back to the issues - meaning how are we going to fix this economy, fight these wars, etc.. If anyone has had a free pass from the media - it's been Palin - 2 weeks in and not ONE interview. I want to see how she plans to fix the economy, etc...because, frankly, she has the thinnest resume in the history of presidential politics. If anyone has been given a free ride by the press - it's her. Let's see her answers questions on her own - without McCain or anyone else helping her. She is the only candidate out there who has not been properly vetted - and that should be a big concern to the American public!

    • Posted By: Uncle_vito @ 09/10/2008 10:19:50 PM

Fix the Economy? Like tell folks not to buy houses that they cannot afford. Or buy SUV's that get 10 mpg when gas goes to $5.00. How about the big screen TV's folks buy on their credit cards.

Seems the economy is fine. It is the consumer that is all messed up.

Obama should run on a platform that tells the voter to live within his means and quit acting foolishly with money. Then he would be placing the blame where it belongs.

TO: NBC, MSNBC, CBS, CNN, NYT, CT, WP, Newsweek, Atlantic Weekly, LAT---

WHAT MAKES YOU WORTHY OF TELLING US WHAT YOU THINK?

The Main Stream Media should be ASHAMED AS HELL OF ITSELF; but, we know, it has NO SHAME!!! It NOW thinks it should get involved in the vetting of a VP, while it GAVE A SHAMELESS PASS to OBAMA for the PRESIDENTIAL SLOT.

So you think giving SOFTBALL questions to OBAMA in the debates proves anything. Do you think not tracking down his associations, record, accomplishments or lack thereof proves anything? Do you think that attacking a 17 YEAR OLD GIRL of a candidate AND THE CANDIDATE HERSELF MAKES YOU WORTHY OF TELLING US WHAT YOU THINK?

It proves that the MSM is trying as hard as we have ever seen to CONTROL an election like a Chicago Party Machine, or a government controled, Banana Repubic press.

The MSM press has been disgraceful and there has been and will continue to be a decline of the MSM into tabloid, celebrity, and sexism journalism.

With some MSM outlets like NBC, MSNBC, CBS, CNN, NYT, CT, WP, Newsweek, Atlantic Weekly, LAT, and others becoming tabloids following DailyKos, MoveOn.org, and HuffingtonPost, the vast majority of normal, middle class, independent/moderate WILL BE SICK OF YOU.

    ANSWER THIS QUESTION:

So you feel the way you do. Is America great or what? You do not have to read, watch, think, or go where something displeases you. But your feelings and beliefs are just that, yours. So tune in next week to Newsweek and read the last word from George Will. Get a grip.........this is entertainment!!!!!!
