THE BIG IDEA

What Happened to Family Values?

Palin's pro-life extremism is as ethically flawed as it is politically damaging to the GOP.

You will never get the evangelicals to abandon their opposition to abortion completely. Many realize that like it or not abortions are a necerssary 'evil'. Making them illegal will force women to seek them illegaly which will also cause death, dismemberment and infertility. No one is probably in favor of killing babies, (sic) but as long as this issue divides the Republican party, viva Democrats!

Another major problem occurs when one parent falsely claims that his or her child is missing.

If you know where your child is located, stop claiming that she is missing. Travel to her home to be with her during the holidays. Show her that you care.

Women are behind the most egregious cases of missing child fraud.

Spread the wealth how.? Look at his past. Obama in this video, addressing his work with ACORN litigation against the banks and relating to the Community Reinvestment Act and the failure of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, as they relate to the current real estate and financial crisis, states that, and I quote:

"Subprime lending started out as a good idea, helping Americans buy homes who previously could not afford to. Financial institutions created new financial instruments that could securitize these loans, slice them into finer and finer risk categories, and spread them out among investors and around the country, as well as around the world. In theory, this should have allowed mortgage lending to be less risky, and more diversified."

"The original idea was a good one, which was, lets see if we can distribute risk more broadly, and make it easier to provide loans to people who otherwise might not be able to get one."

Listen for yourself. You cannot dispute the mans on words recorded live:

Obama in this second video is campaigning at a convention of Acorn and I believe two other ???Community Activist's organizations. Ask if he will be their ally if he becomes President, Obama says, quote:

"Yes, but let me say that before I even get inaugurated, during the transition we are going to be calling all of you in to help us shape the agenda."

See and hear it for yourself. Obama promised that Acorn and other groups like it will setting his agenda if elected:

Three surveys -- from the Associated Press-GfK, George Washington University and an Investors Business Daily/TIPP poll - - show McCain closing the gap with Obama.

The AP poll puts Obama at 44 percent to McCain's 43 percent, compared with a 7 percentage point advantage for Obama in their September survey. The GW Battleground poll showed Obama's edge at 2 points, down from 7 points in the middle of October, while the IDB/TIPP tracking survey has the margin for the Democrat narrowing to 1 point from 5 points at the start of the week.

AP poll: Candidates running nearly even 10/22/08

Neck-and-neck results are a departure from many recent national polls
WASHINGTON - The presidential race tightened after the final debate, with John McCain gaining among whites and people earning less than $50,000, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll that shows McCain and Barack Obama essentially running even among likely voters in the election homestretch.

The poll, which found Obama at 44 percent and McCain at 43 percent, supports what some Republicans and Democrats privately have said in recent days: that the race narrowed after the third debate as Republican-leaning voters drifted home to their party.

FactCheck.Org is owned by the Annenberg group of Chicago! Talk about a conflict of interest! And Obama has been telling people on the trail to check out the site to verify his opponents claims. Funny, every time that he endorsed something, it turns out to be a part of his spin machine! Like he raised objections in the primaries when Indiana required photo I.D. to vote. He Protested that It took away people's right to vote! I

I am a Catholic pro-Life white Republican woman. I am voting for Obama.

People forget that BOTH Obama and McCain have been pro-Choice. McCain "flip-flopped" on this issue in 2004 when he started voting 90% with Bush. Prior to 2004 McCain was pro-Choice, and he even called Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell "agents of intolerance" (which in fact they were). Since that time he has stood on a stage with Jerry Falwell, praising him. So it is impossible to know what McCain actually thinks on this issue. Is he pandering to the religious right when he vows to overturn Roe v. Wade? What is really in his heart? How would he act if he were elected? Would you get the conservative McCain you see now, the liberal leftist McCain from 1999-2004? These inconsistencies disturb me. I know there is such a thing as political expedience, but the end result is that I can not trust McCain. Nobody knows his real views on abortion.

Furthermore, I think that Obama's position on abortion and many other issues is considerably more moderate than is generally assumed.

To all of the conservatives out there who think that Obama is a flaming liberal, I would like to remind you of what he did when he was elected President of the Harvard Law Review. The Law Review President gets to name ten individuals to write articles for the Review, and these ten people get to control the content of the publication. All of the minorities and the liberals thought they finally had it made, that Obama would appoint ten left wing editors. Instead, Obama appointed three conservatives, three liberals and four moderates. That year the Law Review was critically acclaimed as the best run and best written Harvard publication in decades.

So when he wins in November, conservatives don't have to freak out. Obama is a centrist and will appoint a balanced cabinet full of active people who will really get things done. This is exactly what our nation needs in this time of economic crisis.

Jim, as usual you are trying to twist a fact to make it mean something different.

Your quotes from Obama's books are more or less accurate, but they are taken completely out of context. In Dreams from my Father, Obama writes at length about how he went through an adolescent period of rebellion and identity crisis. He spent some time identifying with his black heritage and feeling how victimized blacks have been. If you read the whole book, you will see how he realized that it was immature for him to stay stuck in these feelings. He realized that he needed to do something constructive, rather than complain about other people being destructive. And he needed to see both sides of the story, both black and white, since he is both black and white. Actually, Jim, you could take a lesson from that and learn how to be more objective.

You quote from Audacity of Hope is taken from a speech Obama gave after 9/11. He said that if the US government starts rounding up Muslims without cause and without giving them due process of law, that he would stand up for the Muslims rather than just watch our government put them in prison camps like we did to the Japanese Americans in WWII. In fact, the Bush administration created it's own internment camp and called it Guantanamo Bay. While there are certainly many guilty terrorists held in Guantanamo, there are also many innocent American citizens who have been held illegally for years without even being charged with any crime. They have been tortured by our government. Some of them have died.

Recently the Supreme Court ruled against the Bush administration in the matter of Guantanamo Bay. The Supreme Court Justices were NOT on the side of the terrorists. They were on the side of the Geneva Convention, that says you can not torture POWs, and on the side of US laws that state you can not imprison a person without charging them with a crime and bringing them to trial. I'm sure that like most Americans, the Justices who voted against the illegal, immoral doings at Guantanamo did not feel sympathy for the terrorists. They felt sympathy for the laws of AMERICA, the land of the FREE, where even rat finks get a fair trial.

One of the things that makes America GREAT is Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press. Your blog implies that if McCain wins the Presidency, Obama's books will be banned from public libraries. Heaven helps us! If this is true, it would be one heck of a reason to vote against McCain. Come to think of it, Sarah Palin tried to ban books from the Wasilla Public Library, and fired the Head Librarian when she refused to comply. Maybe it is true.

God save us from small minded people like you, Jim Johnson.

  • Posted By: Nins @ 10/18/2008 2:34:04 PM

Jim Johnson, no matter how many times people tell you that Obama is against socialism, you keep posting these blogs that accuse Obama of socialism and communism. It is not true and you know it. You are just trying to smear Obama and make people afraid.

In his book Audacity of Hope, Obama writes at length about the FAILURE of SOCIALISM and the failure of communism. He enthusiastically states that American democracy is the greatest political system on earth. Obama is not a socialist, and he does not admire socialism.

To you, Jim, and to all of the conservatives out there who think that Obama is a flaming liberal, I would like to remind you of what he did when he was elected President of the Harvard Law Review. The Law Review President gets to name ten individuals to write articles for the Review, and these ten people also get to control the content of the publication.

Kind of like the way our multi-cultural society is supposed to be. And exactly what we need in this time of economic crisis.

Everyone of voting age should read these two books written by Obama, 'Dreams of My Father' and 'Audacity of Hope'. Don't buy them, get them from the library before they are removed from the shelves.

From 'Dreams of My Father', "I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."

From 'Dreams of My Father', "'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race."

From 'Dreams of My Father', "There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white."

From 'Dreams of My Father', "It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names."

From 'Dreams of My Father', "I never emulate WHITE men and BROWN men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela."

And FINALLY the Most Damning one of ALL of them!!!

From 'Audacity of Hope', "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Obama's view of the future of America - Socialism which is the next step to Communism!! He admitted to Joe the Plumber than he wanted to spread the wealth! He said that he wanted to make everyone equal! Is America ready for Socialism? The Iranian president, Ahmadinejad, said today that he is glad to see the end to capitalism in America!! Are you glad?????
    ====================================================================================================

Under socialism a ruling class of intellectuals, bureaucrats and social planners decide what people want or what is good for society and then use the coercive power of the State to regulate, tax, and redistribute the wealth of those who work for a living. In other words, socialism is a form of legalized theft.

The morality of socialism can be summed-up in two words: envy and self-sacrifice. Envy is the desire to not only possess another's wealth but also the desire to see another's wealth lowered to the level of one's own. Socialism's teaching on self-sacrifice was nicely summarized by two of its greatest defenders, Hermann Goering and Bennito Mussolini. The highest principle of Nazism (National Socialism), said Goering, is: "Common good comes before private good." Fascism, said
Mussolini, is "a life in which the individual, through the sacrifice of his own private interests??realizes that completely spiritual existence in which his value as a man lies."

Socialism is the social system which institutionalizes envy and self-sacrifice: It is the social system which uses compulsion and the organized violence of the State to expropriate wealth from the producer class for its redistribution to the parasitical class.

Despite the intellectuals' psychotic hatred of capitalism, it is the only moral and just social system.

Capitalism is the only moral system because it requires human beings to deal with one another as traders--that is, as free moral agents trading and selling goods and services on the basis of mutual consent.

Capitalism is the only just system because the sole criterion that determines the value of thing exchanged is the free, voluntary, universal judgement of the consumer. Coercion and fraud are anathema to the free-market system.

It is both moral and just because the degree to which man rises or falls in society is determined by the degree to which he uses his mind. Capitalism is the only social system that rewards merit, ability and achievement, regardless of one's birth or station in life.

Yes, there are winners and losers in capitalism. The winners are those who are honest, industrious, thoughtful, prudent, frugal, responsible, disciplined, and efficient. The losers are those who are shiftless, lazy, imprudent, extravagant, negligent, impractical, and inefficient. Family values means - its ok if the Democrats have 5 children, but its unacceptable if a Republican has 5 children. Pelosi has 5 children - shame on her for her 2 faced slam on women....
We cannot afford Obama - his mindless tax policy, his hatred of the Military and Veterans. his failure to censor Nancy Pelosi who went on vacation instead of address the energy crisis which would have improved the economy.

Though abortion can be seen as pragmatically useful for maintaining a nuclear family, that does not make it moral. White-color crime and corruption both help keep a nuclear family stable by ensuring that it is wealthy, but that does not make it right.

The pro-life position is at its strongest whenever it starts talking about the life of a fetus. Once you accept that, one finds yourself on a steady rode to the pro-life camp. Arguments such as the "welfare of a child" mean little when you realize that the alternative is that child "not being alive". As to the rape and incest cases, the sins of the parents should not be taken out on the life of the child.

If one is going to attack the pro-life position, one should at least address its strongest argument.

      Agreed.

  • Posted By: BlackandWhiteStillExist @ 10/13/2008 9:25:21 PM

I found this article to be very narrow minded and naive. The author implies that abortion is a better option all around for woman and society. Sure, abortion seems like a great idea at the time -- the problem feels like it goes away, but it doesn't. With one breath liberals support stem cell research for life-saving cures, and with the next they're calling for the slaughter of unborn babies in the name of "convenience."

    What is sin?

I assume it is the biblical notion of sin, which is where your morals seem to come from when you say "the sins of the parents" specifically in the case of rape and incest.

Another good reason why people need to abandon superstitious filth like biblical morals, and respect a women's right to choose.

A fetus is *not* a child.

(Repeat as many times as is necessary for that to sink in)

The fact something has the *potential* to be life, does not make it life. Sperms and eggs have the potential to become life, too. Doesn't mean we punish people for masturbating, for instance.

Unless of course you are Onan.

    • Posted By: Tabi @ 09/25/2008 10:57:58 PM

Though I was echoing a section of the bible, I was actually referring to the secular notion of sin???the one that often translates into ???crime??? but also includes immoral acts. Religious fanatics aren't the only ones who reference the bible, moderates and even atheists do as well. The same goes for any widely read book. So I shall put it again more clearly for you: does the fact that the parent(s) did something wrong mean that the child should suffer for it? Or does the fact that a person suffered at the hands of another give them the right to take it out on someone else?

Part of my argument was that you cannot argue for abortion from the perspective of the ???welfare of the child???. Such an argument turns into saying that it is best if disadvantaged children were never born (which is why I used the term ???not being alive???. Economic eugenics anyone?

The second part was the failure to address the pro-life argument. If one takes the position that a potential human life begins at conception and is actualized at birth, what of the time in between? Am I to believe that life is actualized in a quantum leap or over time? Thomas Aquinas held the latter position.

There is indeed a right to choice, but that right is eventually superseded by the child's right to live???and that moment when it is superseded occurs well before birth.

And finally, try to get out of the dark ages with your tolerance of religious differences. You sound like an inquisitor with your talk of filth and superstition.

    Talk about, "Not Getting It"...lol

The American public is not as stupid as the elite media thinks. The media could not possibly make it more obvious that they have annointed Obama to be our next president, and these constant stories attempting to paint republicans as the nazi party do nothing but make the republican base stronger.

For two straight weeks the media has branded Sarah Palin as a liar who abuses power.....I have yet to see a positive story about this woman. Yet she enjoys an 80% approaval rating in Alaska as governor......is that because she is such a lying, power abusing, crazy woman who's views are so out of the mainstream? Two straight weeks of nothing but trashing Sarah Palin, yet during that same two weeks, McCain has erased Obama's 8 pt lead among likely voters and now has a 10 pt lead. An 18 pt swing during the same two weeks.

These media attacks on Sarah Palin have done nothing but make the republican base wider and stronger. Combine these attacks with Obama running around like a broken record trying to paint McCain as Bush and then take a look at the polls and see the results. Which demonstrates more open mindness, voting with Bush 90% of the time, or voting against Bush 99.7% of the time?

So now the results in Iraq have shifted and it is becoming obvious, even to Obama, that we are now winning this effort. Democrats have done everything in their power to make sure America would lose, and despite their efforts and the helpful medias efforts to aid them in their pursuit, America is coming home with a victory under our belts. Do you think the people who are likely to vote are unaware of this? Granted there is little press coverage of our successes in Iraq, but the facts speak for themselves.

So let the media continue to brand Sarah Palin as a liar.......and lets see who the American People think the real liar is in November. Sarah Palin...or the Democrats and their Media allies?
