i wonder if all these pro life people realize sometimes abortion is the lesser of 2 evils. it is the result of all these bastard babies and unfit mothers that contributes to the criminal element in our country. lets be honest some people have no business raising kids. all they are doing giving birth to children who are predisposed to violence, drug use, and general criminal activities. no i dont believe it is right but neither is a child raising a child. this is a country of freedom. the freedom to condemn your self to hell if u see fit. aomebody you have never met having an abortion does not affect your life.

Agreed. Repeal of Roe v. Wade would be the best thing to ever happen to the Democratic party. Republicans would lose the ability to use the issue as a straw man to fire up their base. We need to call Republicans bluff. They don't have the cojones to repeal Roe v. Wade.

Palin is pro-life, even in the case of rape, and opposes same-sex marriage and favors the discussion of creationism alongside evolution in schools. But she hasn't pushed for legislative changes in any of those areas.

The Associated Press reported Sept 3: "Palin's children attend public schools and Palin has made no push to have creationism taught in them. ... It reflects a hands-off attitude toward mixing government and religion by most Alaskans."

She even vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships because she said it was unconstitutional.

That says plenty. It shows she knows the limits of government, and believes that government isn't there to tell us what to do.

Obama seems more inclined to use government to control what choices we have than Palin does. Check out HR 800 and see what the democrats are up to while we're all talking about Palin. They are trying to eliminate the secret ballot in union elections. How unAmerican is THAT?????

AAction said "Did Ken Lay's experience help him avoid bankruptcy at Enron?"

Apparently you don't understand the business theory that Ken Lay and the others you mentioned follow.

First you have to understand money does not "dissappear" it moves from one pocket to another.
GW Bush's companies took the SBA for millions while dad was President . Neil Bush's Silverado Savings was bailed out to the tune of 68 billion while dad was VP.
Billions went into Enron but nothing came out, what part of that do you not understand?

The only reason the Republicans want the oval office is profit, it has nothing to do with what is best for America or even "Family values,, but family values are a good sell and gives rise to an emotional vote rather than an intelligent vote.

I can't figure out if I feel sorrier for Bristol that her mom forced her to have the baby or forced her to marry that loser boyfriend. Talk about having nothing going for you except that your future mom-in-law could be the VP. He better hope she wins, otherwise he needs to support his new family on his on.

    • Posted By: caroline @ 09/09/2008 12:00:46 PM

If my teenager were dating a bully-boy loser like Levi Johnston, I would have sat down and had a heart to heart talk about HIS values and gently discouraged the relationship before it got to the point where he got her pregant..

    • Posted By: snoozhe @ 09/07/2008 10:33:01 PM

Hmmm--I supposed Sarah Palin forced the boyfriend to get Bristol's name tatooed on his finger too? Sometimes kids (seniors in HS) do exactly what they want. It's really unfortunate for them. It's certainly possible that Sarah Palin could have been neglectful and this happened, but it may have little to do with her at all. My parent's preached abstinence, never even told me about starting my period, but I had lost my virginity and was on birth control by 17. So you can't always blame the parents.

      These kids got married already?

Hey Everyone - we could argue all day long about the tabloid stories and who's being picked on in the media and who's not - but utimately - this election is going to come down to the economy and asking yourselves if you are better off now than you were 8 years ago. And now that Sarah Palin has made it clear she intends to behave like a pit-bull with rabies combined with a mad-as-hell bucking bull (with listick), she's basically promising to play her part in 4 more years of partisan gridlock and fully supports Bush's policies 100% as does McCain. It's a real siimple choice and James Carville (who I don't always agree with) definately summed it up nicely:

"By every economic measure known to man, Democratic Presidents have out-performed Republican Presidents. And by the way if you believe the economy was better under George W Bush than Bill Clinton you???ve got a real clear choice here.

"If you think what America needs is a tax cut for people making over half-a-million dollars a year then vote for McCain. If you think middle-class people are struggling ??? that their incomes are going down and they need help ??? vote for Obama. It???s a very simple choice".

"Yes, we all can" .... I agree, ...the economy is a major issue and the current disaster could have been avoided by the current Republican administration that basically had a hands off policy on sub-prime mortgages. Same as the hands off policy on the dot-com debacle (again, unsupervised, unregulated greed) and hands off on Katrina (not OUR job).

Why do working class republicans vote against their own economic self - interest? Because the republican ruling elite has manipulated them to focus on the insignificant but hot button religious issues: stem cell research, gay marriage, abortion (if youdon't want an abortion, don't have it, that's your choice. Don't try to overthrow Roe vs. Wade cuz it won't happen)). The war, the economy, the burgeoning deficit that our grandchildren will have to pay, our crumbling infrastructure, a deficient educational system , lack of affordable health care....and on and on.

I have visions of an America 50years from now with the Republican elite sequestered in their gated communities, plotting which war to start, continue or finish) while uneducated, impoverished working class republicans say, "It's god's will" and send their children off to be slaughtered fighting a meaningless war.

Author says, "a wildly underqualified running mate in Sarah Palin" I am happy to know this opinion. Will the author explain how all the qualified leaders at Merrill Lynch, Lehman, Bear Sterns, CITI, etc. were able to avoid financial disasters of epic proportion? Was the experience of Spitzer and Edwards a prelude to superior performance? Did Ken Lay's experience help him avoid bankruptcy at Enron? None of the above. The experienced author is intellectually bankrupt, this column being but one humble example of his expertise.

Hey, AAction any reason for three posts??? We heard you the first time.

I agree, Palin isn't wildly underqualified, she is frankly appallingly and terrifyingly unqualified.

If I wanted a self-righteous leader whose actions are dictated by God, I'd give up my American citizenship amble across the ocean and join Al Queada or some other "god is on my side" radical, rigid and dangerous group..

McCain'as choice of a vp is a disaster for everything our forefathers envisions for our nation.

I don't care how much need there is to have fewer babies in this world the answer is not abortion! There is no way that I would ever now compromise my belief that life begins at conception and therefore abortion is killing. 20 years ago I had an abortion. It has haunted me ever since and the only thing that has rescued me from being tortured by the memory is that I have a loving God who has forgiven me because I truly, truly believed I had done wrong. It was a cold and selfish thing to do.

I can't believe that McCain chose that trailer trash Palin as his running mate. Oh vey. My aunt lives near the VP residence and all the neighbors have put up FOR SALE signs. There goes the neighborhood. And where does she think her Huckleberrys are gonna go to school? There is not a single private school in Washington D.C. that would accept them.

It is amazing where flawed logic can get you. Thank you for giving us a lesson on how to rationalize one's position. The pro-life agenda is an independant issue, though related, to the traditinoal family values. You have completely ignored the fact that there are higher goods than traditional family values. In this case, the value of life transcends the value of the traditional family structure. It is ok to say we value life more than the traditional family structure without denouncing family values in any way (actually you are upholding the family values). However, to denounce life would place a burden on the very foudnation of family values. Life upholds the family. It is the very foundation of the family. There are a hierarchy of goods in any moral code, and the key is defining the highest goods. This is a classic case flawed priorities.

How twisted! Weisberg has everyting out of whack. One cannot espouse murdering babies and family values at the same time. Yes, the IDEAL is the traditional two-parent family, but does it justify murdering your baby just because circumstances are not ideal? IDEALLY, Bristol and Levi should have kept their pants on, but that is water under the bridge now. Are we to suggest that they should NOT get married and try to raise this child correctly just because statistics say that they are likely to get divorced? Marriage is not always the answer but the if for the families to decide on a case by case basis. Sometimes the "Juno" scenario, that Weisberg dismisses so blithely, or single motherhood are the best choices under the circumstances. But murder should NEVER be an option.

  • Posted By: Gdubya31 @ 09/09/2008 8:46:49 AM

    Mr. Weisberg

It is so sad, and yet so common among liberal "elites", to propagate by simply spouting off unsubstantiated or skewed stats and claims and turned the argument totally upside down, all the while knowing that the mainstream media will print your junk (and I don't use that term lightly) as facts and reality! There are so many realities that you've ignored and left out of your OPINION article that it is not even worth commenting on beyond the word "junk" that I use, and again, not lightly! If only we could enter into an open unbiased (mainly biased by the media and our education system) we would see clearly that the reason the Left is having to espouse such half- and un-truths is that they know that when taken to their logical conclusion, their socialistic policies have failed miserably on every front and that is being exposed in spite of the media's best efforts to conceal it (although there are a few that have been willing to require some facts and seek their logical conclusion)!

There is a simple law that does exist and has never been refuted that will explain my last statement - "the Law of Harvest" - whatever you sow is what you will reap. Death begets death (abortion, embryonic stem-cell, etc.) and dis-ease begets disease (sexual promiscuity - STDs, abortions, post-abortion syndrome, etc.)! These are the real life outcomes of the socialistic, liberal agenda as is proven in the research and stats at every turn, and more importantly in the lives of real people! I hope, as appears to be happening, that the realities (which are for the most part the opposite of what you've stated) are being seen by America and as the polls indicate, Americans are waking up to these realities and it will be evident in the election!

Thanks for your rhetoric but it's already been proven an absolute failure, so "no thanks!"

    Respectfully submitted

    Greg Williams

Since man (and woman) reap what they sow, you have to live with what you do. Just PERHAPS the repercussions from killing a baby are greater than the repercussions of living as a single parent. Abortion does not resolve the problems. It amazes me that liberals think killing babies is acceptable, they will even pay for it with the tax payers money but executing a convicted murderer is not acceptable.

The Christian roots of this country have made the USA what it is, a country in which hard work, integrity, and ingenuity can flourish and prosper in the climate of freedom. Conservative Christians are so labeled because they believe - not in perfection, but in striving for high moral values and integrity. They believe in the sanctity of human life, the love of family, and pride in this great country. Some may find these characteristics offensive, but without these characteristics there is no America.
