The Christian roots of this country have made the USA what it is, a country in which hard work, integrity, and ingenuity can flourish and prosper in the climate of freedom. Conservative Christians are so labeled because they believe - not in perfection, but in striving for high moral values and integrity. They believe in the sanctity of human life, the love of family, and pride in this great country. Some may find these characteristics offensive, but without these characteristics there is no America.

Where do you begin to critique this article. Almost every sentence in this article has a lie, a distortion or logical fallacy in it. Only a couple of comments then: since when did it become extreme to believe that life begins at conception? And........Sarah Palin has galvanized the conservative base of the Republican Party which has been disillusioned over the last 12 years by the wishy-washyness of its party's leadership.

What a piece of personal-agenda-masquerading-as-journalism piece of junk. The center in American social values always looks "far right" when one is on the far left.

  • Posted By: martphyl @ 09/09/2008 1:49:09 AM

What? It amazes me Jacob Weisberg can take oppositional ideas and emld them to support each other. Like, "My car drives safe because it goes slower with flat tires." Check out www.getmarriedfirst.com takes som e effort to read, but it is worth it.

  • Posted By: CEA5620 @ 09/09/2008 12:30:32 AM

Wow, I am frightened with how ignorant this country is becoming, and how many of these ignorant "journalists" are allowed to publish their ridiculous opinions, but report them as fact. First of all, I do not form my opinions based on party-related ideologies. My convictions derive from my faith and religion, not from what is conservative or not. I am not pro-life because it is what the Republican party believes. Palin IS in every way a reformer. She is moving away from this "moderate" conservatism, which has become plain laziness, and is reinforcing moral values. Who cares whether or not being pro-life is "politically damaging"??? That is the most absurd thing I have ever read. Maybe if this country wasn't so enraptured with advancing their careers, especially political ones, *cough OBAMA cough* then perhaps more people would understand what Palin brings to the table.
SECONDLY, Biden is a moron for using his Catholicism to attract more conservatives. He should not even be receiving communion at mass (here I am assuming he even attends mass...) You cannot be both Catholic and pro-choice. There is no relative truth to whether or not life is sacred. It is either sacred or it is not. If a person murders a pregnant woman he/she can be charged with two counts of murder, are you aware of that??? I don't know about the rest of you, but for me, that certainly sends a mixed message to the public. Is life only sacred under certain circumstances?? A woman who gets an abortion - which is premeditated - is somehow allowed to terminate the life developing within her, but a person who murders a pregnant woman all of the sudden has taken two lives???? What is going on??? Does anyone else see the contradiction?????????
THIRDLY, I would rather flee the country than see it run under another immoral degenerate like Clinton. His little sex scandal is not the only flaw to his presidency. Are you aware of his lovely bombings of Serbia and Sudan??? Probably not, because lucky for him his sex scandal immediately appeared and no one paid attention to the thousands and THOUSANDS of murdered civilians. I am not saying Bush did any better, or that McCain will somehow bring peace and harmony to the world (because that will never happen until the final judgement day), but I'd rather see a couple of people with some sense of morality take office than a man who is just in it to win the title.

The funny thing about your article is the fact that you choose to deny one fact about abortion. Just because it is easier to support your argument, you fail to call it what it is. This is a pregnancy. There is a living baby involved. It is very easy (and a very calculated move by many) to debase this issue by terming it as ???aborting??? or ???terminating.??? Maybe it helps you sleep. Let us define this as what it really is: you are taking something that has life, has a heart beat, has brain functions and ending it or terminating it. Oh heck, lets go ahead say killing it. That is what your doing. Norma McCorvey, the Roe in Roe v Wade, is now against abortion. Ask why many women grieve every year on the date of their abortion. Why these women go through long periods of grief and a lot of times, have memorial services. To them it was not just a ???mistake adverted??? ,but it a life taken. My favorite line in your article is this, ???If you do not allow teenage girls who accidentally become pregnant to have abortions.??? Accidentally? How do you become accidentally pregnant? To my best knowledge, you have to have sex to become pregnant. So if your willing have sex, then you have a good chance to become pregnant. That is what I love about your relative perspective. There are no consequences to anything. Well anyway, I know the Republican Party is not perfect and I do not live up to the value that I live by, but I could never vote for someone, or have much respect for anyone, that cannot value the life of the most innocent and unprotected people in this world. Lets us stop pretending that the womens rights are above the unprotected child. Her rights were terminated when she choose to have sex knowing that is the process that produces babies and not one for just having fun or fulfilling a need.

Calling Sarah Palin an extremist will not quell the groundswell of support for her position not only from conservatives but from mainstream soccer moms and those concerned by the extreme liberalism of the major altenative choice (Obama/Biden).

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 09/08/2008 11:34:55 PM

What do you define as "extreme liberalism" of Obama/Biden?

The ticket is fairly mainstream Dem, not liberal at all. What could it be that you're objecting to? His being Black? Biden's being Catholic and Irish? What is wrong?

It might help if you consider that Obama/Biden are big-city types; McCain/Palin are "Main Street" America types. If you prefer to vote for people with conventional reform in mind, then the latter is your ticket; if you prefer to take an educated leap of faith and try going back to an America that will be very much like the Clinton years (minus the scandal), then I guess you're more inclined toward Obama/Biden.

      Simple as that!

  • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/08/2008 10:50:05 PM

Palin is pro-life, even in the case of rape, and opposes same-sex marriage and favors teaching creationism alongside evolution in schools. But she hasn't pushed for legislative changes in any of those areas.

That says plenty. It shows she knows the limits of government. Government isn't there to tell us what to do.

Obama seems more inclined to use government to control it's citizens than Palin.

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 09/08/2008 11:30:15 PM

Obama doesn't want to "control" peoples' lives - he wants Government to be there as a backup, to give some options to people who genuinely need a hand. Come on - his policies aren't that different from the Clinton years - and Bill Clinton was very muct a centrist, even usurping some of the Republicans' favorite platform issues like "balancing the federal budget' -- which our own Bushes don't seem to be able to do.

Why are people still saying they "don't really know" Obama when in fact he's been in the forefront of our daily news now for about a year or more? I think they just stubbornly refuse to acknowledge his leadership abilities, his intelligence and his talent in the policial arena because he's 1) Liberal and 2) Black (okay he's also White!)...

Now McCain has finally got his wish - a CELEBRITY TICKET. I don't begrudge Sarah Palin's limelight, hey day and potential opportunity. But I do begrudge McCain's slimy, ego-centric, cynical "ME-FIRST" political decision to tap her at the last minute just because Obama didn't pick Hillary.

It will backfire on McCain. Some day, some how, it will be his downfall. What goes around comes around. Maybe Palin will take over and be the best president we ever had. Maybe she's actually just a poseur herself and is secretly trying to gain total control of the White House so she can be the first Lady Prez and show everyone a thing or two...! Funny thought - more power to her if so.

But Sarah, as a sister in the female population, please do not take away what rights we've got and please do not insist that we all follow your Pentacostal religious values. Don't make your move to power about that - and get a new hairstyle while you're at it. Something a little more sophisticated... ? Just a thought. Bright RED lipsitck would look GREAT on our nationa's PIT BULL.

I cannot seem to reconcile this story here and this one: On Gov. Sarah Palin's watch, Alaska liberalized its abortion laws (http://www.newsweek.com/id/157541/) - which is it?

  • Posted By: dkeys @ 09/08/2008 10:45:15 PM

Calling Sarah Palin an extremist will not quell the groundswell of support she has recieved, not only from conservatives, but also from mainstream hockey moms, soccer moms, etc. The newfound upward direction of the polls shows that she is a breath of fresh air to most Americans. It is the inexperience and extreme liberal views of Obama/Biden than should have Americans a bit concerned.

At one time in history, Jews were legally considered non-humans making it a good thing to abort the lives of millions of Jews for the benefit, for the convenience of those legally protected Aryans. Do you think this possibly just might happen again on this road we are on to aborting for the convience of the legally protected born Americans? St. Edith Stein, pray for us.

Since when is Sarah Palin using her children to get votes? I'm sure she would have been happy to have her daughter's pregnancy remain a private family issue if it weren't for our scandal-hungry media who couldn't wait to bring out this juicy story to embarass her, McCain and her family. I am sure she discussed the impending scrutiny with her family before embarking on this journey, and I'm sure she wouldn't have entered this race without her family's full support. Also, I suppose many people think it would be better parenting to kill their unborn baby knowing the challenges he and they were faced, but personally I admire her for rejecting current trends of society deciding that certain lives are better off never being lived. Meanwhile, no one comments on the fact that were this out-of-wedlock pregnancy to be happening in the Obama family, we can be sure they would have quietly procured an abortion (without any media attention, naturally - that's too private of a situation for the media to intrude on, right?) to make sure their daughter weren't "punished with a baby"... kudos to the Palin family for knowing how to support their daughter and turn a bad decision into a happy ending.

  • Posted By: PhDiva @ 09/08/2008 8:14:46 PM

I am disgusted by the racial double standard at play here. When Black or Latina girls get pregnant out of wedlock, they are "welfare queens" and when a white middle-class/wealthy girl gets pregnant out of wedlock, "Life happens." and it's a "blessing."

Sarah Palin is not a terrible parent because her daughter got pregnant or because she is working while caring for a Down Syndrome baby. She's a terrible parent because she has used both of these children in order to get votes with no concern about how humiliating this must be for her pregnant teen-age daughter. Her willingness to exploit her children is what makes her a poor parent. I find her disdain for the feelings of her daughter disgusting, and I would find it just as disgusting in a male politician.

We are open minded. So open minded that we do use our brains and think for ourselves! We don't let one policitical party tell us a bunch of lies, make things up and then try to sell them as truth!! Talk about character!!
"The McCain camp has tried to again obscure the facts about Gov. Palin. 'She is a reformer and against earmarks.' No she isn't, when she was mayor of that town she hired a lobbyist to get earmarks... 'She was against the bridge to nowhere.' No she wasn't. She was for the bridge to nowhere first... She is a budget balancer. But she left the town in greater debt then when she became mayor, so she is not a budget balancer."

"She is a good person, she has tremendous potential but in no way shape or form is she ready to be president of the United States."

"She claims to be a reformer. " "And yet she is being investigated on the charge that she used her power as governor to fire someone who was going through a messy divorce with a relative of hers. Could you imagine if anyone else was doing the same thing in Pennsylvania or any other state? They would be calling for that govenor's impeachment." Imagine if Barack was in the situation - WHOA!! would the media and everyone come down on him.

    • Posted By: Yonderboy @ 09/08/2008 7:40:47 PM

"A messy divorce?" He was reprimanded for threatening to kill his wife's father if he hired her a divorce lawyer. He was suspended for using a taser on his 10 year old step-son. A taser. He hunted without a permit and was found by internal investigation to have driven drunk on at least one occasion. Palin complained about all this stuff to the cops long before she was Govenor.

Now, I'm sure there are more details, maybe even mitigating circumstances, but you either didn't have the facts or didn't care.

I'm sure if the investigation finds she acted illegally, it will sink her career and McCain's ship, but let's wait til Oct.

Your comments on her position on earmarks and the bridge to nowhere are equally missing in the relevant facts that would make your criticism valid. i.e. terribly oversimplified and misleading. I don't know which sound bites you were listening to, but the propaganda from the left is as biased as from the right. Do some research.

It just amazes me that people are trying to micromanage the Palin's lives for them but no one seems concerned that Obama argued and voted in favor of INFANTICIDE. Where are the Newsweek articles on his legislative record on that? Where are his quotes that it is "too burdensome", that right Obama's "tell me words don't matter" words...that it is "too burdensome" to require an abortionist to call a doctor to care for an infnat if it is born ALIVE after an abortion. Where is the outrage to this.

I am not trying to manage Palin,s life but it seems as if someone should. She is correct the difference between a pit bull and her is the lipstick. Where did this "Presidential" candidate come from.Who is she?
She (The Presidential Candidate) continues to say that she put the plane on ebay--she did --but she did not sell it on ebay. I was taught that if you mislead your listeners you have lied . When did it become a badge of honor to parade your unwed teenage daughter, who is a high school drop-out "I am told "in front of the world. And for goodness sakes will SOMEONE tell me why the boyfriend was flown in to this circus.Another question as a RNC I am in a quandry as to why she flew 8 hours after her fluid broke.?
Again had this been Obama and Michelle' daughter you would be screaming your heads off.

What possible family value could Obama supporters find in letting viable infants die. Obama was the ONLY Senator to vote against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act.
Reseach, google, Jill Staneck and read her testimony she gave before Sen. Obama.
Obama who loves Europe...Netherlands is in Europe and has legalized EUTHANASIA. Infanticide is one type of EUTHANASI. What is next for Obama...putting the elderly on a shelf to die, the medically challenged, the mentally ill? Where does he draw the line on who deserves to live and die?

I am an Independent Christian and have had the same opinion since the age of 5. Outlawing abortions doesn't stop abortions, it just forces those women to find more dangerous ways to terminate the pregnancy.

      • Posted By: mccaincursingonyoutube @ 09/07/2008 10:17:02 AM

I don't get this. There are some places in America that doctors are killing babies after they are born. Abortion usually takes place before birth. After it is born, you are suggesting that the doctors in some state ask if you want to keep the baby or abort. And if at that time you say abort- he kills it. The Born Alive Infant Protection Act would have protected the baby. I have news for you. Murder is illegal in all 50 state and territories. We don't need a new law for that.

Obama is NOT a RACIST BIGOT!!!!!

We all know that people of intelligence and insight recognize the importance of celebrating diversity. Hispanic immigrant children are applauded for embracing their heritage and the language of their parents' native land. When someone chooses to ignore, de-emphasize or obscure their ties to their own cultural heritage there must be some shame or hidden agenda that motivates them.

For example, I think most people feel sorry for the pressures that led to Michael Jackson's outer physical transformation. He seemed to deny his ancestry in an attempt to become outwardly whiter. How sad. Sometimes, when an African American person denies their affinity with their racial heritage they have been ridiculed and labeled an "OREO", because they are percieved by peers as being black on the outside and white on the inside.

But thank God, Obama has embraced his African American heritage. GOBAMA!! Otherwise some folks would be righteously indignant, furious even. GOBAMA!! So, he's gonna be America's first African American President. GOBAMA!! During the campaign he talked about how his opponents were gonna whisper that he was black. Bill Clinton even did it. His opponentes were gonna be racist and talk about his blackness.

    But I won't.

    Because Obama is not Black.

    He's White.

He's at least as white as he is black. Considering his upbringing and his genetic make-up. Unless, for some personal or political reason he wants to emphasize his dad's heritage and not his mom's. But that would be disingenuous. That might mean he was racially bigoted toward his mother's side, his white side.

And some folks might be righteously indignant, furious even.

But you'll never hear that perspective in a Newsweak article.

The author missed the most important development in women's rights- the ready access to BIRTH CONTROL the use of which would render this discussion moot.
If these teenagers are taught about birth control and yes the need to abstain, then they have more options than an abortion, shotgun marriage and single motherhood.

I am personally against abortion and I don't think it's any more responsible for the author to essentially advocate its use as a method of birth control. Abortion should be for exceptional circumstances, if at all, not because you slept around and forgot to avoid getting pregnant. Besides an abortion will not cure AIDS or other STD's that are lack of condom use leads to.

The GOP's argument that Palin's daughter choosing to keep the baby says anything about their "family values" is a joke. 17 year old is a minor. Pregnant minors speak nothing to family values. They speak to irresponsible behavior by perhaps both the parent and child but that is not a role model that I need to family values.
So 17 year old mother, soon-to-be shotgun bride and possible divorcee in a few years- yes GOP, I see it now, where do I sign up?

    Obama-Biden 2008
