We all have our favorite news networks we use to obtain the information we need to make a selection in this election cycle. For months I have watched the same network and supplemented it with visits to competitive internet sites. However, during the recent political party conventions I found myself constantly switching to the other networks to see what was ???going on???. Some of the networks seemed to put their own slant on the issues while a few clearly directed each question or comment towards a particular candidate. This is only to be expected since each of the 200 million plus voters has their own individual opinion on their favorite candidate. During this buildup to the election I have spent a significant amount of time reading the opinions of the political pundits and most importantly the comments submitted by their readers. However in the last 2 weeks I have seen more hate being spewed in the comments than ever before. Governor Palin has been the brunt of totally fantastic lies, many of which would have resulted in a Salem, Massachusetts woman being burned at the stake and others that are physically impossible. Barack Obama???s middle name of Hussein has caused many that are politically opposed to him to clam he is a closet Muslim. And everyone running for each of the parties has voters waiting for them to bite the heads off of bats.
I have no idea of how many ultra left and right wing fanatics are spreading this filth. It might be as little as 5%, maybe much less, but they are only clouding the election for the vast majority of voters. No matter which direction your politics lean you must look at every last bit of information and consider the source, how plausible is it and what is the significance to the future of our country in these trying times? Hopefully the hate will not affect the results of the upcoming election.
Remember, half of you will wake up on November 5th having voted for the party that lost.

    >The more we see of Sarh, the more we all like her<

Snort. The more I see of her the scarier she seems. An uneducated lying power hungry vengeful Dick Cheney with an even nastier edge.

Religion has NO place in politics. People that vote on the basis of religion are nothing more than lemmings. They are also the PRIMARY reason this country is suffering the way it is right now. May god help us all.

Well Kathleen, thank you for being so naked about your feelings.

Truth is that within a month or so, when the shine of "new" wears off and we to know Sarah Palin better there won't be much to be impressed about. She is a formidable individual but apparently no unlike the the present administration in her tactics.

Just like the shine wore off Obama - he is just being propped up by the media and shortsighted minorities

My comment got mangled... I meant to add that I have a 10 year old myself and I always look for strong female figures for her to see and perhaps admire. You make an excellent point about being emotionally moved by her but objectively aware of her many shortcomings as a politician. Sooner rather than later, we'll see that there were many candidates both male and female, who'd have been better choices than her politically and ethically.

At last an article that discusses, not despises, Sarah Palin. What most people are not talking about is that any election is a risk in itself, regardless of the candidates and their views. Seems to me that there is a lot of Fear this time around. Therefore, I suggest, as some here have done, that voters give each of them a chance, pay attention to the debates, then look inside ourselves to vote our conviction.

I would go further and say look at how they made decisions in various situations. For example it says a lot about a person character if in the face of rank racism they would hang around a place for 20 years. Can you imagine if this was a white candidate?

OK, so here is an elementary civics lesson. The president gets to appoint supreme court justices (you know, the place where a case that overturns Roe v. Wade would be decided). There are 2 or 3 seats up for grabs over the next term. As anti-abortion supporters, both McCain and Palin would put someone there that sees things the way we do (we can only hope that at least the idea of exceptions for rape and incest remain). Then, the pro-lifers would be waiting with the perfect case to overturn it, the stacked supreme court would agree to hear it, POOF, no more Roe v. Wade. God forbid McCain, a four-time cancer survivor of age 72 dies, the hockey mom who said she would have her 14 year old carry a pregnancy resulting from rape to term, she alone would have the pick. Wake up!!! If you value your reproductive rights, you will not vote McCain/Palin!

Hello? How? The president appoints supreme court justices, and there are 2-3 up for grabs this term. If the right panel of judges appears, the pro-lifers will bring a case to overturn it. McCain is anti-abortion, too, albeit he has a brain about exceptions for rape and incest, which this woman does not. And, god forbid he croaks (he is 72 and a 4 time cancer survivor), she gets the pick all to herself. Did you take high school civics?

Palin believes it is God's Will that we are fighting in the Middle East. That is a scary...especially if she were ever to become President because of something happening to McCain (which could happen due to his age). These Conservative Christians have no idea how much damage they are doing to the United States and the world with their fundamental perspectives.

Honey, wake up and smell the coffee. Yeah, America loved George Bush's comedic charm - but look where that got us! Not once but twice. Are we pulling for that again? When Sarah takes down Roe V Wade what are going to do then ponder another puffy, "Leave it to Beaver" editorial piece. Rest that likeability crap to the side, look over the past eight years, see how screwed up our country is and get a grip sister!

    • Posted By: Rooster67 @ 09/07/2008 5:47:32 AM

Explain to me how a Vice President is going to take down Roe V Wade.

People get too wound up by Roe v Wade. As a non-religious person who has no problem with abortion, I think both sides act as if overturning that Supreme Court decision will somehow cause the Universe to shift on its axis. In reality it just would mean that it goes back to the state; which is frankly where it belongs.

Sarah Palin reminds me of fictional anti-heroines like Becky Sharp and Scarlett O'Hara, that keep digging themselves deeper and deeper as they claw their way to the top of the heap. You keep hoping they will suddenly sprout a conscience but it doesn't happen. Personally I think Governor Palin is a narcissistic sociopath. Based on the reports coming out of Alaska that I have been reading seems really good at twisting situations to meet her own ends and then walking away and leaving the mess for someone else to deal with. Palin's got the *change* thing down... but like a chameleon not Obama.

I really liked this article, and I have to say I've been obsessed trying to learn more about Gov. Palin. About four years ago I stopped voting party line and started voting for the person who made the most sense. So, I'm really liking what I'm hearing from McCain and Palin. They both have records of taking on the special interests. I think that's a positive factor. It's highly possible from what I've read that Gov. Palin isn't a conservative idealogue. She seems like a maverick in her own state.

  • Posted By: elouis @ 09/06/2008 8:10:16 PM

Perhaps, your article is the best evidence I've read so far why Sarah Palin needs to be looked at very closely by all Americans, before they vote. You really point out, in a very creative way, that so far, to men and women, she seems very much like the calculating politicians that have brought America to this point of self-destruction! We need change is the cry of all of these 2008 candidates, but if we really look at the issues, that change is really not going to be all that easy, or popular, when one of them gets into the oval office.

I also note that while she has called Hilary Clinton a "whiner" ( taped interview) in the past, because Senator Clinton seemed to resent not getting her way, the McCain campaign has already been "whining" that the media and other American are "sexist" in their criticism of her. Perhaps, some are, but others are not. There are still a lot of question that we should have about McCain's choice of Palin.

The media will have to do an "Oscar" performing job to get the facts out about Governor Palin, and I wish them well, as long as they stick to the facts. They had their day with Senator Obama and amazingly, he still stands. But, your article did provide some very important insights of how "sister politics" is played. Thanks and God bless!

Our we voting for people we can identify with that we would like to sit down for a cup of coffee with? Or, are we voting for people, who will serve our best interests, so we can sit down and have a cup of coffee with the ones we know and love? Because, I don't know about you, but I don't anybody like me or my friends that I would want to be president now or ever...

How sad. Your whole article sounds like an apology for liking Sarah Palin. Will you be ostrasized by other liberals for liking her? I thought liberals were so open-minded. Sarah Palin is like a breath of fresh air. Finally,, a strong woman whose not a fem-nazi. She's pro-life and loves her family and country. Why are liberals so scared? Is it because she doesn't play the victim card like your usual liberal feminists. She's tough and smart and will make a great VP.

    • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 09/06/2008 7:52:32 PM

She doesn't play the "victim part"?!! What is all this baloney coming from the McCain campaign about the "liberal media" being anti-feminist?

Liberals are not scared of Sarah Palin. In fact, we ARE DYING to see her in a Sunday Talk show facing tough questions from reporters. If she is so prepared to be second in command why is the McCain campaign keeping her away from the meanie ol' media?

With all the hoopla about Palin's "mother of five children", changing Trig's diaper in the middle of a press conference, breast feeding, juggling all the duties of being governor, wife & mom ~~ Trig is back in Alaska without mommy. What is he eating since he is breast fed?

This whole thing is more than irritating; it is scary. As a woman, wife, mother, grandmother, I don't feel like voting for her because she's female. Any of the anchorwomen who covered the conventions and even the hurricanes have better understanding of the world and the way it works. McCain lost any hope of a vote from me. I never want to see Palin again.

I'm one of those independent voters who supported Sarah Palin when she ran for governor even though I was sick and tired of "republicans" who long ago stopped representing me. Sarah was willing to point out the good ole boys trespasses and probably didn't laugh when the "Corrupt Bastards Club" members sported their ball caps. AK is a very conservative state, with a huge military population, where it took a unique mix of skills to win the governorship. Former Governor Frank Murkowski was running for re-election and Sarah ousted him in the primary with her common sense and the "change" she represented. I listened to what she had to say and decided I could go along with most of her ideas, though I don't support creationism, do support Roe v. Wade, and am generally fed up with all current "republican" thinking. I am finding I have to hold my nose now as I see her being McCain's attach dog. She did good stuff for Alaska and it's a shame that the political establishment is now already turning her into one of them.

  • Posted By: Nutria @ 09/06/2008 6:57:00 PM

Palin has NOT pushed to have Creationism/ID taught in public schools. Unlike, sadly, my governor, Bobby Jindal.

(You really shouldn't believe anything the MSM [that includes the whole spectrum from Keith Olbermann to Sean Hannity and populists like O'Reilly and Lou Dobbs] writes/says without first getting 3 *independent* sources.)

It's amazing to me that even after this woman went through the lists of cons with this woman, she still ignored them and admired these qualities.
This is what happens each election. People get sucked in by these people because they present some cosmic narative that they fall in love with even when the object of their admiration is clearly a flawed person. It's just like when people though GW was a rancher because they saw him clearing some staged brush on some fantom cattle ranch or whatever it was.
The same is true with Ms. Palin and her narrative of a strong woman who hunts and fishes and give birth to a child with Downs Syndrome. There are thousands maybe millions of other women who do this everyday that no one knows of, but they expect to be rewarded for it by be given a vice presidency, but still this writer is willing like so many others have in the past to vote against her own best interest, and I think that over the next few weeks the smoke will clear, and we'll find out who this woman truly is, and I bet to spite that, this woman will still consider voting for her.

It only stands to reason? whose. You certainly read the liberal rags. Try something a little more moderate. Or something, that tells the truth. You sound stupid.
