One thing we can all agree on, whether we are believers in God and real values like me, or democrat Darwin lovers like many of you, is that Miss Deveny and her silly stories of her daughter would be an embarrassment in a real culture.

Interesting article...Thank you for saying what I was thinking. I am a moderate Democrate and although I am leaning toward an experienced McCain for President, Gov Palin does raise some concerns. But the Vice President does not set policy. I believe that John McCain has no more chance than Obama has to die in office, one only has to look at his Mother. So Palin has certainly made this a much more interesting and exciting election than I have ever seen in my life time.
I agree. As a army paratrooper, I would go to war with Sarah; or for her. All Americans want leaders with conservative principles; unlike Obama, Bill, Kerry, cancer stricken wife cheater, and of course HRC. Let us think as Americans and decide what is best for the greatest country in the world. Country first!
McCain cheated on his crippled wife and then abandoned her with three kids! Yes, with McCain, McCain first, country last and wife last too!
Pia, it is sounding like you have surpassed the need for some therapy to help you deal with McCains affair with Cindy and breakup with his first wife. LOL. It happened over 28 yrs ago which based on your blogging sounds like you were not even born then.
I don't need therapy, share. You probably do with this obsession of hatred for Obama. You showed how ridiculous you could be with that stupid finger flipping BS you whined about for weeks. Did you really expect intelligent people to fall for your desperate smears? You go out of your way to sabotage the man every day. Not normal. Lucky you that you do have time to "research" all this cut and paste info.. how can
you possibly get work done doing this all day? And, Mccain did cheat on his wife..just stating a fact here the same way you and others like you did over the Rev. Wright issue.
I do have to hand it to you though, you are persistant....wish I was like you in that way spending hours here trying to get my candidate elected...but you see I have a life besides politics...I have a boyfriend , who btw, posts here too..he's a Rep.. and nothing like you and some other McCain supporters..he doesn't support his candidate by smearing Obama.
How is it that "the boy/girl next door" or "just like me" candidates get elected as president? Frankly, I don't want a president just like me. I want somebody who is a truckload smarter, harder working and more capable. He/she has to be the very best there is.
Frankly, I think McCain or Palin lack the intellectual curiosity to be effective presidents. Obama and Biden are as far removed from me as it gets, but out of what's left, they're the people I'd hire.
Excellent article! Although, I also have many problems with some of her stances (Roe vs. Wade is not going to be overturned, anyway - so that doesn't matter), Palin is certainly an extraordinary person. I describe myself as an independent, and may have voted for Biden, if won the nomination. Sorry all you "progessive" Democrats out there. I'm voting McCain!
I couldn't agree more with your article. Although, I also disagree with many of her stances, she is certainly outstanding!
This is to Kathleen Deveny. Get over it. Hillary lost the nomination. Stop being so bitter at Obama.
"I liked her the first time I saw a picture of her, nearly a year ago in this magazine."
That sums up what this campaign has become, a popularity contest, and the prettiest girl becomes the prom queen.
Only problem this is not about a prom it's about the United States of America and the power of the Presidency and Vice Presidency.
I too was struck by Palin but within hours the information about who Sarah Palin was and what she was about started filtering in, and quite frankly I was insulted that anyone could consider this person for the second highest position and quite possibly the highest office in American.
I wrote it off as just one more example of McCains apparent slide to senility.
God help us if some evangelical trophy hunter were to get in office.
Palin is a person who would make some teen rape victim bear and raise a child because she values life so much, then go hunting, kill one of Gods creatures and hang its body parts on the wall (usually the head)
Not to mention ignoring the death of perhaps 500,000 Iraqis who we find so inconsequential no one bothered to count the dead, or the 4500 dead young Americans who have died for oil and war profits. A war that Palin writes off as a mission for god.
As I say, God help us if any of these religious fanatics ever gets into office.
This country has major issues, the next president will have to deal with, Health care, America is 37th in the world, the death rate of new born is as high as any third world country, and we rank 27 to be exact.
An administration that believes reducing tax' on the wealthy is some how great for the economy and McCain will continue it, because he believes it too, but I ask you If it so damned great how come the economy is in chaos??
Unemployment is at its highest and McCain want to give the illegal's amnesty, if the INS ever raided McCains ranch in Sedona he would have to mow his own lawn and Cindy would have to learn to cook.
Scientists tell us Global Warming threatens not just many species of Gods creatures but our way of life.
Yet you want to put in office a woman who doesn't believe in science and thinks drilling for more oil is the right approach for the future, what part of the burning of fossil fuels is the cause of global warming do you not understand?
We do not need a prom queen, we need an administration with brains a reasonable grasp of reality and the best interests of all Americans at heart.
Dear Ms. Deveny,
I suggest you stop being sentimental and naive. If Palin is like Nagelina then she should be in Hollywood and not the White House.
Ms. Palin is an irresponsible mom and a lousy role model.
She did not teach her duaghter to be careful and protect herself
Then since Ms Palin does not believe in sex education she could not ensure that her duaghter was good and fully understood what abstinence meant.
She was silly enough to think teenagers with raging hormones can easily abstain.
People who are unable to comprehend basic science and biology cannot be leaders in a world where science and technology are major drivers. To mouth creationist platitudes from old religious texts is not leadership or freshness. Instead, it shows a closed and narrow mind and a fundamental lack of understanding or curiosity about nature of scientific inquiry and theories. Not smart or wise.
Please do not equate feminism with the ability to behave like them good ole boys. Feminism is about the ability to accept, embrace and emarace a wide definition of success and role models not the narrow male definitions of success and role models.
Mr Obama is far more of a feminist than Palin. He genuinely accepts a wide range of views, definitions of success. And he has curiosity, thoughtfulness, openess and ability to talk seriously about serious and contentious issues.
How funny that this author thinks she should "keep secret" her admiration for a woman who rose from nowhere to take on the Good Old Boy network, root out corruption in her own party, run for and win the governorship of a state, and is now the first female on the ticket in 24 years. These things are worthy of being celebrated--it's okay to cheer, Kathleen. You might not agree with her on every issue, but her accomplishments are worthy of admiration.
Oh yah i agree with you. her accomplishment to lie on a daily basis is such feat to brag about. incase you didnt know what im talking about. turn on your tv and watch the meda cover the whole to bridge to now where :)
Well if lying is your yardstick...who are you voting for.....Obama has lied so many times I have lost count.
McCain is the bigger liar and cheat..wife cheater....Palin is a hypocrite who did not teach her family the values she supposedly lives by. McCain is also a thief staling Obama slogan about change. What change? he is no change he's more of the same yet he has the nerve to accuse Obama of being more of the same...McCain and the new tyrant lose in Nov. Americans have had enough of the tyrants running the country.
Nice to see you back sanctimonious. How do you know what she taught her children? Because the daughter is pregnant and not married? I suppose you would look down on my family too. One of my sons became a father at 18. He took the mother to court, demanded a paternity test, got it, got visitation, worked hard and got through college and law school, took his visitation religiously and paid his child support promptly. Yet to people like you, I was a lousy mother and he was a bum. You are the one whose values are suspect.
Busby, you are the sanctimonious one, not I...I am voting Democrat..you are voting Rep. the party who is so gun-ho about family values... where are the values? The ticket has a wife cheater and a woman who did no tteach her kids the values she insists she lives by. Busby, you are a disrespectful bore who picks on my posts every chance you get..For someone who is much older than I and a grandparent, you need to learn respect or shut up. I never post to you because I have no interest in your bitter opinions... I do however feel sorry for you.. so bitter and such a big chip on your shoulder. I hope you do you teach your granchildren respect, or hopefully, they will try to teach you. Good luck with it.
I know, something about people like you just tick me off. As for being a bore, I don't judge people by how they choose to solve their personal problems as long as they don't break the law. But then, I'm not as perfect as you so I have made mistakes in my life, something that is apparently foreign to you.
Busby, you show me by your bitter comments that you are rude, boring and disrespectful and abusive to me. I never post to you unless you instigate and you have done that lately. As for people like me, and me being perfect, I never said I was perfect... you don't know me, so be quiet. Oh, I left you a post above in case you missed this one... for all to see. You brought it upon yourself. Bye... and don't ever post to me again
OK. You're no fun anyway.
Fun? Really? I never thought you even knew what the word means because you are so boring. You also just proved how easily you give in. You can't even fight..
Here's a hint: if you want to end a conversation, stop talking.
No hint from me to you nosybody...just shut up!
We all know that the "media" has been in the tank for Obama from the beginning. For some of us they have no credibility. Good name though. Your post reads like you area juiced, Ozark.
Yeah, I guess that's why she feels like she has to keep any admiration a secret. If she lets it get out, she'll probably lose her high standing in the media, and certainly from the tone of the comments here, her angry, lefty readers. Look how hard they're working to try to demonize Palin and anyone who dares to disagree with them on a single issue. It's kind of sad.
the homeless children in this immoral war is sad.
It SEEMS like the media was too tough on Palin ( and I have gotten to like Sarah and her family more as well - I'm a little embarrassed how they were portrayed as Alaskan hillbillies ) but everyone seems to forgot how much the Republican attack machine was RELISHING the opportunity to make pie out of Hillary. Back when she still seemed the likely One, the RNC already had wham-bam slap Hilary around campaign planned out
In fact, the entire Republican strategy was going to be a " (men ) Don't LIKE her, Don't TRUST Her" mantra.
They would have been BRUTALIZING Hillary like RAGING BULL now. Right now, there's a back off, show some deference to Sarah attitude going around but she's a big girl and it's part of the political game that's played.
It's no accident that the absurdity of the US Political Election process makes for so much hilarious comedy from Colbert and Jon Stewart. Sarah has been roughed up but she showed everyone how tough she is.
She's only doing herself a disservice buy hiding behind the curtains and staying off the news shows.
Some of the stories that whipped around the internet and the press are being corrected and clarified seem to show that a lot of people really jumped all over her record but there's only 2 months for the media and the voters to find out about her. Most candidates who have been known nationally have been through years of public scrutiny. Every VP pick that is out the blue has turned into a frenzy ( Quayle's deer in the headlights, Tom Eagleton's electroshock therapy ). McCain knew that he was letting the sharks in the aquarium tank -
it's always happens like this. As far as the pregnancy issue, sure the media reported but the actual discussion was on women's talk shows, teen blogs, most kitchen tables in America.
Over the weekend I heard that Charlies Gibsons network got the deal for Palins first news show interview. I believe it is the Nightly News on Thursday she will be having this interview with more to follow. I am looking forward to seeing how she handles herself myself cuz Im thrilled with the McCain/Palin ticket so far. Lets see how she does with not only media interviews, but also her debate with Biden early October.
WILL EVERYONE JUST PLEASE LEAVE SARAH ALONE??? After all, she's only a woman. Everyone knows that women are emotionally fragile. It just question after question after question. Why should she have to answer all these questions??? All you mean liberals and media types (not you FOX) are just so hateful. I can't wait for Sarah to become President (and you know she will) and finally be treated like the lady she is by Putin and Ahmadinewhatever.
It's like a dream come true. Somebody pinch me. Just think about it. We'll have a woman who believes that the earth is literally 5000 years old, that dinosaurs were on a literal ark (with all the other animals mind you), that banning books in a free society is kinda cool, that endangered species (like polar bears) can just go eat cake because global warming is not real, and that the United States should not interfere with the Middle East's self-destructive tendencies because Jesus is going to rescue all the Christians at the last minute anyway...(take a deep breath) will have her finger tips on the nuclear button....
...Kind of takes your breath away doesn't it?
Georgia-Dan, I'm not sure why you tagged your response under my post cuz Im thrilled with the McCain/Palin ticket as it stands up until now. I just am curious how she will hold up in a debate with Biden. But then, I just saw another article on this site that says that Biden said he is pulling in a political woman from some state to jump in should Biden is not being in a position to handle her cuz he doesnt want to be in a position to bite her head off given she is a woman. I say What the . . ? What is this man going to do if elected VP and travels to other countries to confront woman leaders and the subject gets sensitive cuz he doesnt know how to handle a hot discussion with a woman. . . is he going to bring a female consultant along on his trips to sit in the corner and jump in when he decides he cant deal with a strong woman leader.
This article exhibits the same sexist attitudes displayed by some of the Hillary supporters. If opposed to sexism, one must take care they not fall prey to adopting those same attitudes. Otherwise, they become part of the problem instead of the solution. The same principle applies to racism. Jast as it would be wrong to judge or vote for Obama based on his racial heritage, judging or voting for Hillary/Palin based upon their gender is equally wrong.
The criteria for selecting candidates for public office should be based upon ethics, positions on the issues, track record (performance), skills and experience. To a lesser extent, and dependent upon the office, health and age may become valid mitigating factors deserving of consideration. Invalid criteria include race, gender, religion, and appearance. Of course, the last doesn???t preclude good personal hygiene and a modicum of respectable attire in the performance of duty. The current deplorable reality of elections in this country emphasizes, rather than eliminates, the need for striving towards this goal.
I felt compelled to point out the sexism because even though Deveny disavows almost everything about Palin, she still finds her admirable, which appears wholly to be assigned out of gender identification. I find that pathetic, but more importantly, it???s wrong. For example, one might respect Palin, G. W. Bush and Saddam Hussein for all being loving, doting parents, who achieved positions of power and prestige and possessed other qualities like charisma. However, one might simultaneously disapprove of the manner in which the children were raised, how each went about achieving, maintaining and exercising power, and/or to what ends they used their other gifts.
It is possible to respect certain aspects or traits of a person, but that doesn???t necessarily make that person worthy of respect or admiration. I wouldn???t hold up Sarah Palin as a role model for my children, and I would be quick to disabuse them of any notions of admiration they might develop.
It confounds me that a feminist would find Palin in any way admirable. Here is a women who climbs on the backs of feminists, using their blood, sweat and sacrifices to achieve her current status, yet whose ideology denounces those same feminists and seeks to reverse much of their gains. Is Ms. Deveny as loopy as Palin? Or has she donned the same sexist blinders she loves to rail against?
Incidentally, in my state--and I???m sure in others, as well--women who hunt are commonplace enough to be considered unremarkable.
This author is my worst nightmare of the American voter. She calls Palin's convention speech as a "masterful performance", going on to say that Palin "was ruthless" and "managed to beat Obama up". Is this how the average voter makes decisions? Is this what passes for "masterful". No wonder Bush was elected twice. Who needs substance when you can just smile and charm 'em.
Of course, maybe I am wrong and the writer just likes the woman. In that case, you go girls! Please, just do not end up voting Republican this year.
It is my worst nightmare too. This article bothered me perhaps more than any other i have read this year. And i am a strong woman. Yes this is scary.
"Maybe I'm a sucker for a frontier myth..."
Let's see...remove "Maybe" and "for a frontier myth..." That does about sum it up.
I am not sure all you whining libs here get it. I know that what Kathleen Deveny heard and saw in Sarah was nothing less than G-d Himself calling to Miss Deveny to save her daughter and to save America.
Why has McCain gone from being 7 points back to being 10 points ahead? Why are state races swinging McCain's way? Sarah.
Like another person she serves who went by one name, Sarah is brash where she has to be, but in all things obedient to the word of God. Miss Deveney by her own admission was a "Cafeteria" believer. Sarah is bringing America and Miss Deveny and her daughter back to what our Founders envisioned. One Nation, under God. God Bless the USA and thank you God for sending such a powerful woman just when we need her!
Isn't that what Republicans said about George Bush? Wasn't he supposed to be our savior 8 years ago? Why do we have the biggest budget deficit in the history of the United States? Why has the disparity between rich and poor become so much greater? Why are we engaged in a war of choice in Iraq (Barry Goldwater would turn over in his grave) which has killed over 3000 Americans? Why has our Conservative Republican government become bloated and corrupted by lobbyist and special interest? Why is our economy in a shambles? Why is gas over $3 per gallon? Why are we hated oversees? Conservatives have been in control for the past 8 years.
Why does GOD keep sending us such terrible conservatives? Maybe we're actually being punished with George Bushes and Sarah Palins for being so gullible and dim-witted. Georgia Bush and Sarah Palin are a lot alike. They Both were manufactured by the same people. We Americans chase after empty, shinny baubles. We are like "infants tossed back and forth by the sea, blown here and there by every wind of teaching and the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming".
What a silly, shallow article. So the message for your daughter is that it's great to see a woman out there -- even one who opposes all the major issues that women care about, and who hides from the media because she's not up to the task of answering even the most basic questions about what she believes in? Thanks for reminding me why I recently cancelled my Newsweek subscription after 30 years.
i agree. i am really disappointed in Newsweek behind this one.
Amen. Ditto. I agree with your comment, bequia1... completely. Well stated.
I second your ditto, Francene!
In 2014, maybe Ms. Deveny can explain to her daughter how her support for Palin in 2008 had lead to an administration which outlawed safe abortions in the U.S., and that women must sneak across the border to Mexico to have an abortion in the back alleys. Maybe Ms. Deveny is happy with making 0.75 of every dollars that a man makes and doesn't mind that her daughter enjoys the salary disadvantage. Or maybe Ms. Deveny is being a typical woman, making senseless decisions regardless of consequences and then later denying all responsibilities because she is a woman. If this is case, then go iron my shirt!
Yeah, but she glorified her. And justified her abuse of power issues... she is feeding right into the strategies of the republicans to get people to vote their personal preference. She certainly doesnt help the democratic ticket.
Too many folks in this forum have too much faith in the American poor and middle class who makes up the core DEM constituents. Truth is, it's over! The American poor and middle class are too stupid and once again have been manipulated by Karl Rove and the GOP. If a writer like Ms. Deveny can claims that she does not know anything about Ms. Palin's ideology given all the resources out there, it's over. The GOP numbers will only go up through the roof.
If I were you folks, I won't spend an ounce of emotionality energy into this election. The poor and middle class are too stupid to know when they have been manipulated. They consistently vote against their economic and social interest for characters and values debated offer by the GOP. Don't feel sorry for these animals. I call them animals because they act instinctively, emotionally without thought for consequences. That's what animals do. Throw them food and they will eat it, never mind that it contains poison. Filthy, stinking animals.
You are dead wrong. People watch television, CNN, FOX the survival of the fittest shows - in the record industry the positive message of rap music was diverted and twisted to become gangsta hip hop music that promote the thug life mentality, listened to youth of all races. So we are dealing with a heavy machine of propoganda that promotes individualism, and glorifies hired gun men and woman. We are subliminally taught that might is right. On the telivision shows we have to betray our best friend to win. Obama is helping to unite us and this is a great thing. Those who put him down are feeding into the old divide and conquer tactics. I take personal offense by your comments. I am sure not dumb, and neither are most Americans. Many of us are misinformed about each other, and prejudiced. And we would rather have that beer with one of our own kind. We have little opportunity to get to really know each other other than on the job. I believe Obama is right and we have more in common than not. We all want a good job, with good pay, we all love our families and want to protect them. Many of us love the environment and are concerned about global warming. Most of us work very hard. Black, asian, hispanic, white... we basically are good people, republican and democrat. Just misinformed. You are letting your frustrations make you cynical. why not use the platform to try to bridge the relations. we are not doomed yet. Dont give up!
Yes, wouldn't it be great to be able to judge women in politics as 'individuals rather than representatives of all things uterine'! We could all start by 'judging' (or rather evaluating) candidates based on their platform and past actions. Sarah Palin has a despicable record on many issues, the forefront of which are women's rights. She very obviously doesn't have an interest in fighting for the rights of women (as any brief overview of the actions taken in her time as mayor and governor could reveal), and the idea that any american woman could feel empowered with her very obviously calculated and pandering pick as VP for the Republican Party baffles me. The fact that she is a woman only makes her stances and actions while governor and mayor more disappointing and offensive. Women shouldn't be admired simply because they are in politics -- offensively inept women that are obviously being used as pawns in the political arena do not in any way empower our gender. The whole notion of this piece defeats the foundation of gender equality. And no, it doesn't make a woman 'cool' to abuse power, just as it doesn't make a man 'cool' in abuse of power. Seriously, give me a break.
Good for you. As a democrat who has been completely turned off by the elitism, patronization and downright snottiness of the Obama campaign and the attitude of his followers, I like her too. I see her everyday in the supermarket, walking a pile of kids with attendent dog, at the service station. And I think I know the reason she is so looked down on by the obama supporters. She comes off like regular folks. And I think they are scared because maybe there was something to what the Clinton supporters were trying to tell them. You know, the ones who were the racists, the closet republicans, the idiots and every other name the obama snobs could come up with. Well, they have rid themselves of us common folks. Don't know where we'll all be going but it won't be to obama.
Most Obama supporters are common folk of DIVERSE backgrounds. You are being snobbish when you call a man uppity because he has a degree and eats a healthy diet. So what? He eats healthy. We need an intelligent and healthy president in mind, body and spirit. If more people ate green salads and less potato chips, we would live longer. How many of us have heart disease and high blood pressure? How many of us are obese and do not get enough exercise? How many americans use drugs and alcohol as a form to relax and end up addicts? You want your kids to be like them?
Frankly, if you want to guzzle a beer or smoke a joint, that is your perogative. But please dont knock the man that sets high standards for himself, our families and our nation! We need to be strong to survive these times and it will only tougher. Going to the bottle and drinking away our sorrows wont help. I rather Obama get up early and work out than take a shot of whisky when the pressure is on, which will be all the time. We certainly dont need an alcoholic president making stupid blunders while intoxicated. Elitist? please.
We have lower literacy standards than China, India and many other nations. And you knock a man because he graduated from Harvard with honors? duh! would you rather your kids shoot up their high school, become street thugs or contract killers -- than teachers, engineers, data programmers, bus drivers (they get drug tested)?
i suggest we set a higher moral standard for all of our families sake. America needs a nation of achievers. Not crabs trying to bring each other down.
BTW, McCain and his wife are not common folk. McCain / Palin are the big boy candidates.
I think that just because sarah palin is a mother that is no reason to vote for her; and I believe that the republicans are making it impossible for anyone to find out about her without it being sexism get over it...when your running for the second most powerful positon and could end up being president then I think we should know everything to know about her back ground...still that does not make me like her this article has just proves that some people will feel sorry just because she is being talked about and want to vote for her..She needs to grow up and take it your in a whole new playing field...I felt the same way with obama I mean racism is still alive and everyon knows that but you can't cry everytime someone make a racist remark you got to as my grandmother use to say put on your big girl panties.....
Why is it so difficult for some to move beyond personal preferences in an election? Non-whites have been doing it for 100s of years in this country. It is no puzzle why you would prefer to have a beer with a woman of your same class, similar upbringing and sex than Obama, but why is it important to share this in light of the larger issues at stake?
Since Palin is a woman -- you take glee in the fact that she makes her own rules and you go as far as to publically justify why she abused her power and authority to punish her brother-in-law!? My God. What difference does it make if a woman or man elected official fails to be accountable to uphold the law? You know that we are in the middle of an unlawful war, denounced by the International community because Bush and Cheney made there own rules and usurped power - that is causing the USA trillions of dollars in debt that compounds over the years and causes other massive problems. Clearly Palin iand McCain are staunch supportors of this war. How do you justify that? Have we no remorse for the 100s of 1000s of innocent men, woman and children who have been killed, maimed, raped, tortured, made homeless, jobless are without food and water as a result of the Iraqi war - for no just cause? Apparently not. We dont even report their number as if American lives are all that are important. And of couse they are brown and yellow, and most are muslim. You like her in spite of that. I bet you loved it too when Hillary said whe would obliverate Iran. Who cares that we cant win a war with iran, iraq, and aghanistan, and russia - that we are isolated as a nation and ruining our economy.
I am an executive entrepreur and a single-Mother. My children had to make grave sacrifices and often did without. So, i respect a strong woman. I also believe in self-defense. But it takes more than guts to run a nation and family. At least you are honest with your bias. I hope that the rest of us do not pay a dear price for votes based on personal preferences. And personally i think alcohol and guns are a bad mix. I am shocked at this article and can say no more...
