Did you people actually read this article? She specifically said that her admiration for Sarah Palin would not be enough to draw her vote away from the Democratic ticket. Is it not enough to disagree with one's political views and choose to vote for the other candidate? Must you also completely deny that she has qualities that are admirable - just as Obama. My political opinions are in direct contrast to Ms. Deveny, but I appreciate that she realizes that you can admire and even identify with a candidate, without alligning yourself with their party. As some have said, this race is about more than one issue. There is more at stake in this election that in any other that I can remember. I seriously think that Roe v Wade is the least of this country's worries. In every election the far left promote this issue above all others. Has it not occured to Democrats and Liberals that we have had a Republican president in office for 24 of the 32 years since this ruling and it has yet to be overturned? Really, maybe you should look at other important issues that this country faces in making your decision and casting your vote for President of the United States. National security, energy independance, tax reform, accountability for politicians, heathcare & social security reform - these are all very important and effect many more American's than Roe v Wade. Although I admire Mr. Obama's accomplishments, think that he is very intelligent and articulate, and even respect his views on some issues, I do not feel that he is the candidate that has the best qualifications, record & plan to address the issues that I feel are most important to this country. If everyone had the common decency that Ms. Deveny obviously has, this country would be a lot better off. We could all cast our vote without being bombarded by inconsequential attacks and agree to disagree in a civil manner when necessary.

Sarah Palin, is a likeable person. Let's face it, we can not pretend but some are drawn to her pretty face, nice smile and of course taking such great care of her family, whether at her expense or the state's.
Let's face it just because Palin s great with her family, it does NOT mean she will be great to all of American families. I do not believe that women belong at home with their kids, and that a political arena is not suitable for us as well. But one woman in views and actions is not equal to another woman, so just voting because she is a woman by us women is an absurd to me.

Barry, I am scared. That old hobbit is ahead in the polls. Women are flocking to Palin. What do they see in the trailer trash I will never know. Fortunately, you wil have a chance to get back on track at the debates. I am sure you will shine what with your Harvard and Columbia education and superior debating skills. I am sure you will dazzle them. And when Americans see you standing next to that old hobbit I am sure that you will remind them of JFK. Why don't we see more of Michelle on the campaign trail? She is so articulate. Why don't you have her attacks Palin. I am sure it will be very effective. She know more about women's issue than pig Palin.

I was really bothered by this piece...and not because of the writing and not because Ms. Deveny likes Sarah Palin but because WHO CARES IF WE LIKE HER? We need someone who is going to make us better as people and Americans, not someone who is going to make us feel better about ourselves. I can't believe that I am about to say this....but I actually agree with Peggy Noonan. Sarah's candidacy is less about substance and more about the "personal narrative bullsh*&" that the Republican party feels like it needs to sell the American people.

  • Posted By: garbo527 @ 09/10/2008 11:07:32 AM

you know you can like some one, but not agree with them. All she was saying is that she likes her as a person. respects her...not that she is going to vote for her.

  • Posted By: jmls4 @ 09/10/2008 11:03:59 AM

Who cares about, like, issues when Sarah Palin could be, like, your best friend. Except that she never WILL sit down with you for a Red Bull (any more than George W. Bush sat down for a beer with all of those voters who thought that he was so "likeable"), because that's not the job description of the office.

Although I am a man, I can understand womens desire to see fellow sisters break that glass, brick, choose your material. I don't understand why you as an educated woman choose to support a woman because she is just that. I question if you would have the same sentiment if the person had been a man. Gun loving, hunter, uses position to solve personal problems and wants to overturn Rode vs. Wade.
I think for once the US has choosen two presidential candidates that have a certain format, the choice of VP has been less impressive.
If you want to support a woman, please choose one that is deserving of your support and that agrees with your views on womens right to choose. She may not be running for VP in 2008, but she could be on the city council, running for mayor, congreswoman or senator and maybe president in 2012. But please don't waste your support for a woman who wants to annul all the things your grandmother, mother and sisters have fought for. Open that can of Red Bull with a yet unknown politician, community work and make that person your vechicale of change.

That's because women secretly want to be told want to do! They want to be dominated by their men, earn less money than their men and not have rights over their body. In short, secretly, they all yearn to be barefoot and pregnant! Go Iron my shirt!

  • Posted By: FemaleEngineerBR549 @ 09/10/2008 10:39:31 AM

As a professional woman, I am insulted that the media and others believe that we are shallow or desperate enough to vote the Republican ticket because there's a woman on board.

Besides, why aren't we focused on the top issues of our country...and right now, the glass ceiling is way down the list on the issues that we as a nation need to address.

    • Posted By: kle5507 @ 09/10/2008 10:46:23 AM

Obviously, not enough of your sisters feels like you do. Maybe they should all put down the romantic novels about Alaska and start reading the papers on the economy, defense, education and national debt! Maybe man are not the only one fallilng for T&A!

As a liberal feminist I salute Sarah Palin for her accomplishments, toughness, intelligence and charisma. I will not vote for her but I believe that she advances women liberation cause.
Too bad that lib media and demo bosses sacrificed Hillary and her 18 mlns votes for nothing. No, worse than nothing for them: they created Palin's phenomenon. With Hillary as a VP candidate there would be no Palin tsunamis.
Once again: demos snatched the defeat from the jaws of victory. Fire Dean/Pelosi/Read mafia---what selfish, envious, inept little people.

Ouch! As a republican, I sense you are clairvoyant and if only more women see what the conservative women are experiencing. Now the left will resort to politics of personal destruction towards Sarah. Just like the Left and the media.

    • Posted By: Scarlet57 @ 09/10/2008 4:42:53 AM

I think you're wrong on Hillary as VP would have meant "no Palin tsunami"...It's not about Palin or Clinton...This is the same tactics that the Republicans have been using to win - You switch the discussion from issues to personalities and image. I'm incredulous how well it works..People get caught up in who they can and can't have a beer with (as if any of us actually drop by the White House on a regular basis) then choose the person most likely to not represent them...The choice is McCain and his policies vs. Obama and his policies. Read them directly then decide. As for Palin - look on Youtube - She was recently pretty excited about Obama too...

Here is some really interesting reading on Sarah Palin. I frankly think that it's an insult to every female to put Sarah on the ticket. It 's a bold statment that we as women do not have the mind set to vote for the real issues here. It show that we would vote for any women that they would put on the ticket just because we are so hell bent on having a woman on the ticket. There were many more qualified women that they could have picked and they choose Sarah. Well I for one feel I am just as qualified as Sarah to be on that ticket. I am well educated and an american vet. I am a world traveler and even did a tour of duty overseas. Believe me Sarah does not represent the average female in this country. Come on people wake up lets choose a president who is going to steer this country in the right direction. If McCain is elected how can he completely distant himself from his current party. It going to take more than one fresh new face to turn this country around. What I see here is McCain more of the same. We should all be complelled to find out as much about the little known Gov. here is my contribution.

"Likability counts in electoral politics???especially for voters who are on the fence." - She is right about this and it has been the doom of many a politician. I think McCain made a smart move.

    • Posted By: Scarlet57 @ 09/10/2008 4:47:17 AM

I worry you might be right particularly with the media helping it along. In Dennis Kucinich's words - WAKE UP AMERICA!!! McCain made a smart move in terms of getting attention for his campaign but what is he going to do to the country?? Please think! Do you really want to stay in Iraq? Do you really want to rely on trickle down economics to finance your retirement?? Do you really want to give another 4 years to the same party that has all but destroyed our middle class?? People need to ask questions and read!!

    • Posted By: Francene @ 09/10/2008 1:21:46 AM

It remains to be seen whether McCain made a smart move. He definitely made a cynical one. Shame on McCain and his shameless campaign.

This article is sad. It reflects the absolute confusion of it's author. If images and visuals can change an intelligent person's mind and vote against his/her ideals then my dear friends we are in deep trouble as Americans.

SO pay attention Republicans on how to change intelligent minds in America these days.

You want a war, just put up a bunch of flags, and heroes and presto!! You get the support of Ms. Deveny.
You want tu turn Hillary supporters into Palin supporters? Just get her to hold and kiss her baby in public and presto!!! All of Denvey's ideals that made her support Hillary go out the window.
You want to be the agent of change after 8 years of supporting the current administration just put an add with the word I will change Washington" and Denvey's will ignore the 90% support of Bush, and will say yes !!!, yes!!!! McCain is my man!!!!

You know it used to be that the idea of having a Democracy was to have the power to change what we did not like . If we judge the approval ratings that the GOP has, it stands to reazon that we not only don't like them, but we down right DO NOT LIKE THEM AT ALL...... And therefore they should go...... But I guess that was before the time of the photo-ops.

And then we wonder what hit us when we elected "the guy like you and me" , or the odds on "who will you rather have a BBQ with" guy....... W Bush can barbacue alright..... Unfortunatelly that's about all he could do.

Only in America can we used our freedom to come back and ask for more of the same..... We most have a masochist streak.

A few things: I'm a black man and at the start of nthis thing I was rooting for Mrs Clinton. Then came Bill: calling the first credible black candidacy a " fairy tale", coupled with his wife sense of entitlement. That put me off for good. Everybody today talks about how blacks will vote for Obama just because he's black. Remember at the beginning of this race , it was at least a 50-50. And I still remeber all those stories about how Obama wasn't black enough. It's like when it comes to Blacks ,eople think we don't know what is in our best interest. Take a look at the folks attending last week's republican convention: 98% whites. Why do you think so ? They actually have to fake latino signs and do all kinds of tricks to try to hide what is obvious.
And how many times will you bring the reverrend Wright into this discussion? Here is a man who did more good among disaffected than Bush and Cheney will ever do in a thousands lives; a man who actually wore the uniform and risked his life for this country. If anything, he has earned the right to criticize what he sees is wrong about America. Furthermore, I'm soory to say my friends; but the African American experience is not exactly filled with happy stories in this land of ours. It is typical of these so-called christians conservatives to maltreat you and to try to bully you when dare to talk. It is all about the beautiful America, about how glorious werwe the old days . Well maybe for you folks; but definetely not for us.
A friend of mine asked me this very simple question the other day: do you think that Jesus would pass through custom and be admitted into this country today ?
No He would not. Not a chance. First, His dress would make Him the obvious choice for a " random search"- second His passport will read an oriental name too close to comfort for any good thinking custom officer- and plus He wouldn't even dorn the golden locks , blue eyes and white cream skin that we've all got accustomed to. Not a chance I say.

    • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/09/2008 12:48:59 PM

Bill Clinton did not call Obama's campaign a fairy tale, that was what the Obama campaign wanted you to think. He called Obama's claim that he would not have voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq a fairy tale.

Race has been raised by Obama, it was the only way he could beat HRC, that and inviting republicans to cross over and vote for him to defeat HRC in the primaries so they wouldn't have to run against her in the GE. Well it worked. And now the DNC and Obama are scratching their heads trying to figure out how McCain is ahead in the polls.

They are reaping what they sowed. I am a life long democrat, and I will not vote for Obama. I'm going to be a republican for a day instead, and then I'm looking for a new centrist party that isn't planning to force unions on people (HR 800) and redistrubute the wealth by raising taxes on people who already pay more than 40% of their annual income in taxes so they can give money to people who only pay 5% of their income in taxes. What's fair about that? How is that going to fix the economy?

      It won't.

Here is another article (transcript) to read as it relates to Obama tactics used against Hillary:

MSNBC, Tucker Carlson Tucker, Feb. 28, 2008
Mr. Tucker Interviews Sean Wilentz - writer for The New Republic

Article: Obama Plays the Race Card in the Primaries and Blames it on Hillary

        Excerpt from: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23394344/

SEAN WILENTZ, THE NEW REPUBLIC: Tucker, we meet at last. It is great.

CARLSON: I am . . . I was impressed by your piece. I am not exactly sure what I think of it. But you are, so far as I can tell, the first person to say anything like this. I want to put what I think is kind of a nut graf of your piece up on the screen. And here???s what you say.

You say, A review of what actually happened shows that the charges that the Clintons played the race card were not simply false. They were DELIBERATELY MANUFACTURED by the Obama camp AND TRUMPETED BY A CREDULOUS and/or compliant PRESS corps in order to strip away her (Hillarys) once formidable majority black voters and to outrage affluent college-educated white liberals as well as college students. Boy, that is a pretty . . . that is diabolical if true. Give me a piece of evidence.

WILENTZ: Well, it is not diabolical. It is just a good way to go about, you know, winning a campaign if you.

        CARLSON: Oh yes.

WILENTZ: . . . .if you have hit something, you know, hit a hard rut. After Iowa, the remarkable performance by Senator Obama in Iowa, we came in New Hampshire and things did not turn out the way it was???looked like it was going to. So that night and the next morning, a couple of things happened. First of all, the RACE CARD GOT PLAYED when Senator Obamas CO-CHAIR JESSE JACKSON JUNIOR came on and said that the famous incident, the crying incident of Senator Clinton was an example of her racism because she did not cry over Katrina, she did not do anything of the kind. THAT WAS RACIAL POLITICS OF THE MOST DOWN AND DIRTY KIND. But when we get to South Carolina, the strategy shifts. And there becomes a matter of SEIZING ON ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN FIND AND THEN SAYING THAT IT IS RACIST. And the press corps picks it up and says it is RACIST.. And boy oh, boy there is no surer way to get both college liberals and black voters angry at you than to be called a racist.
And that is what I see happening.

pearsoncrz, read this article. It is a little lenghthy but well worth the read as it will shed some light on Obamas tactics he used with Hillary in the Spring and with McCain in June (they are gonna scare you; he has a funny name; . . . and did they tell you he is BLACK?) and July (. . they are gonna try to scare ya. . . his face is different than the faces on our US dollar bills.) until McCain called Obama on playing of the race card immediately after the 2nd instance and we have heard nothing since. Here is the article:

        Weekly Standard
        Barack Obamas Lost Years
        by Stanley Kurtz
        08/11/2008, Volume 013, Issue 45

The Senator Obamas tenure as a State legislator reveals him to be an old-fashioned, big government, Race-Conscious Liberal.

Sounds like you have made your choice of how your life will play out. If you think the goverment will ever do anything to change your atitude and make your life better than you are sorely mistaken. Just keep drinking that kool-aide and you will keep getting what you been getting. Oh by the way brother. Many African Americans have pulled themselves up from nothing and are doing great. They have realized that making excuses gets you nowhere. Somewhere the cycle of bad decisions has to be broken for your family to move ahead. Is it going to be you to do it? Or are you going to pass your misery on to your children and grandchildren. My father had a 6th grade education and my mom quit school at 15 to go to work to help support her brothers and sisters. They started with nothing! No reduced rent. No food stamps. No wellfare. No free clinics. No free school lunches. My dad dug ditches and my mom sewed in a factory. They had one older car and saved every dollar they could. Both my sister and I went to college and we had a great life. Not because someone gave it to us, because my parents worked for it. Now both my sister and I are teaching the same lessions to our children. Work hard and pinch a dollar when you can. Your future is up to you, no one else You!

Two things my women's intuition intuits: How very, very POLARIZING her speech was. Second: She doesn't sound very Christian-like at ALL.

    • Posted By: LMAO @ 09/07/2008 10:59:10 AM

How Christian is it to sit in a racist and divisive church for 20 years? Can you imagine how many more rabid and despicable conversations would have been held one-on-one between Rev. Wright & Obama? After all that was his mentor - remember. How Christian was it for Obama to take a kick-back from Rezlo (via the real estate deal)? How Christian was it for Obama to stay silent whilst Hillary was treated dispicably? How Christian was it to grab the nomination at all cost (big states count more than little bitty states, primaries are more representative than caucuses)? How Christian was it to put blocks in her path to present her case at the convention as was her rightful due?

That woman spoke Truth to Power. Obama has zero accomplishments and spend his time stroking his large sized ego. He is not who he tries to pretend to be and folks are foolish enough to elect him we will be in for 4 long hard years. Everything good starts with integrity and that man by his many actions ahs none - nada.

Sorry, LMAO, that woman didn't speak Truth to Power, that woman spoke Lies to the People.

Snarky one-liners, even if funny in a sad, sick sort of way, do not constitute Truth. And when the one-liners are also false and misleading, well, that's not Truth either, is it? Is it?

Well sir, you certainly seem to have the pulse of what???s Christian. So let me ask you. How Christian is it for a faction of believers to politicize their beliefs and seek to enforce them by making them law? Let???s be very clear about political solutions, they rest ultimately on the state???s use of sanctioned force to enforce its laws. So Christian???s that form political action groups are saying to the rest of us ???We will use the sword to have you do things our way.??? Is this what the one they profess to worship and obey would do? Does the Gospel record at any point portray him recommending or taking this course of action? Isn???t He the one that told Peter to put away his sword? In the Apostolic writings, did any of the Apostles commend the use of force against unbelievers? No they did not. Yet this is exactly what the ???Christian??? wing of the Republicans does year after year. They do not follow their Redeemer on this. He was the One who said ???My Kingdom is not of this world.??? How do you explain this? Offer us your profound wisdom please. Tell us, if you can, how the Evangelical Right is really an exemplar of Christ, instead of a stiff necked and stubborn group of religious supremacist bent on empire building.

Well said. A true man/woman of christianity understands that it is never right to raise your hand toward anyone for anything. There is no eye for an eye. Ghandi understood this, jesus understood this, why can't they?
