Twiggy is often mentioned in articles on the subject. Is there a journalist anywhere who will interview her and print her answers and her views? Was she affected by the illness? Everyone seems to be quick to blame her, but it is too easy to talk behind someone's back. Give Twiggy a chance to make a statement! It's fair to her, and we readers want to know.

Actually, there are quite a few journalists that have interviewed her on the subject. In fact, according to contactmusic.com, twiggy said "thin actresses go on extreme diets to be thin and they are the ones causing eating disorders among fans.". She wants to see more curvaceous actresses in films.

Twiggy said: "They go on about banning size zero, but I think Hollywood stars are the worst perpetrators. Most models are naturally long and gangly, while a lot of these young girls in Hollywood have gone on extreme diets. Their concave chests and bony arms are terrifying. "It's scary to think that normal teenagers are tempted to copy them. I'd love there to be larger models, but it's just not going to happen. Designers love to design for slim girls.".

newee, what does you comment have to do with anorexia? This is more than 'losing weight', genuis, it's an eating disorder that kills. And suggesting ways to lose weight to anorexics is extremely stupid.

    • Posted By: Jennybabe @ 09/13/2008 6:15:49 AM

I agree with you a hundred percent. Suggesting ways for anorexics to loose weight is extremely stupid. Anorexia is the deadliest mental illness.

"Response to wardelljackson. You are sure going to be disappointed when you see that even mixed race people are loved by God and will be in heaven."

    Thank god for your reasoning!!
My grandmother acted like that just because of the society she grew up in and that her father was a member of the southern blackfoot tribe. There is no loss of 'cause' just because you are from two or more 'racial categories', if you want an example, some of the strongest supporters for Native American rights and preservation of culture and land in the 20th century were mixed race. Now how is selflessly serving your neighbours, parents, and family, or being born multi-race an 'act of damnation'? Not at all.

Also to indeed and Booberry, another thanks of admiration for your courage and wisdom. The world needs more people like you. :-)

A fun, healthy way to lose weight and get into shape is to take up square dancing. Get into classes and meet new people, have a good time, get into shape and lose weight while having fun.

    Count.....
Eating disorders are a multi-dimensional problem and are known to be co-morbid disorders. Co-morbid disorders are specific disorders that are frequently seen in conjunction with other specific disorders. For example, research has identified three specific co-morbid disorders found in many clients with eating disorders. These co-morbid disorders include depression, anxiety, and sexual abuse. Unlike the unspecific and unverified issue of control, there is evidence-based research supporting the co-morbid nature of eating disorders. So, this is much more pertinent information regarding eating disorder etiology and treatment. Also, I would like to mention that eating disorders have neurological components because those that suffer from eating disorders have physical differences in their brain as opposed to people without such afflictions. Thus, it is obvious to conclude that control is not a major underlying issue.
Again, I am not trying to offend anyone but I have to ???tell it like it is.??? Just because mental health professionals might work with clients that have eating disorders, it doesn???t mean jack. Since eating disorders are such a complex and difficult illness to treat, special training or personal research is essential. In fact, peer reviewed research has shown therapist expertise is the greatest factor in client satisfaction and recovery rate. There is even greater urgency to be a competent mental and physical health professional because eating disorders are deadly. In fact, Anorexia is the most deadly mental illness known to exist.
I would like to end on a different note. I found it fascinating that the article mentioned an anorexic gentleman that theorizes his Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) upbringing played a part in his development of his eating disorder. I was raised SDA as such, and I also attended a SDA school. In high school one could easily estimate that 60% of the girls that attended that private school suffered from eating disorders, at least sometime in there life. When I switched over to public school, my perception of the eating disorder rate dropped down to 2%-4%. I???ve tried to research this area and I haven???t found much on the prevalence of eating disorders in private verses public schools. Does anyone know of any creditable literature and research that explores this area?

Anorexics can even be potential first ladies. Cyndi McCain is 5'7" and a size 0. I guess she wants her $100,000 dresses to look the same on her body as they do on the rack. She is no one I want to be an example to my daughters. She could set a better example if she would admit she has a severe problem.

I hate it when people make assumptions such as these. just because someone is thin does not mean they suffer from a disorder. I, too, am 5'7" and a size 0; 00 when I'm in school. I eat as much as I need, but I've never gained a significant amount of weight due to my high metabolism and stress in my life.
being thin is not a bad thing- for many it is simply the way their body works. insensitive, if not ignorant such as yours is why I get branded as anorexic as a sick form of insult.

I TOTALLY AGREE!!! When I was in ninth grade I was friends with a multi-cultural group of girls. We all had various stages of anorexia. There was a point when I fainted twice in one week in the shower. Doctors did CAT scans, ultrasounds, and other medical interventions to find out what was wrong with me. No one knew that I was living off of graham crackers and apple juice on and off for three years. I purged through laxatives when I had to eat with the family. I am a 27 year old Black woman who is in recovery. One of my best friends from high school, also a minority, is now sterile due to her undiagnosed "anorexia diet".

SuaSponte - you speak of equality and yet you use the word "retarded." Perhaps you should practice sensitivity to others as well. As you say, "PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE."

  • Posted By: SuaSponte @ 09/10/2008 3:23:42 PM

I notice the picture of Thandie Newton up top. The writers of this article do realize that she is half white and British, right? I mean, unless people thank that the one-drop rule applies to eating disorders as well. PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE. To think that eating disorders don't affect people of color is to assume that they are significanly different genetically. Which is not only untrue, but a form of racism.

  • Posted By: SuaSponte @ 09/10/2008 3:01:04 PM

People seem to forget the ???American??? in African-American. We live in the same country, go to school together, work together, watch the same shows and are exposed to the same media. The days of segregation are over. So, it is retarded to think that people of color (or men) wouldn???t be affected by eating disorders.

  • Posted By: jadedplacebo24 @ 09/10/2008 2:52:25 PM

Actually, African American and Black are considered politically correct and as a Black person (yes used with a capital "B") I feel the term is correctly used, nor do I find it offensive. I also know others of my race who hate the term African American, due to fact that they don't have ancestors from Africa and that the term suggests that we are less than american or that we are direct decendants of Africa.
But that's not why I'm writing this.
When it comes to eating disorders, I have my fair share of feeling less than perfect. My mother has pressured me about my weight, and even when I went to therapy for different issues, my eating issues and issues dealing with my weight, were always looked over. Even my own mother and grandmother would criticized for "acting white" or called "white girl" because I suffered from depression and issues with food. I always hated the lines that were drawn just because I am a Black female, I can't have the same mental health issues as my best friend who is White and Jewish. Children are children, and teens are teens. We all suffer and grow and mature under many of the same environments, and can develop the same mental issues.

"i like the title...just not white girls...if that had hispanic or black it would be racist but since its towards whites i guess its okay." quot. 'BellaMia33'

It's called in sociology and political science, reversed descrimination, though I agreed with my african american studies professor that what descrimination is designated to one human being? It's kind of hard to see the reasoning behind descrimination when you've taken a look at the human genome project, it's amazing to see how close we all are, and sad how far we put ourselves.

This article reminds me of a documentary called 'A Girl Like Me', by Kiri Davis. Where some of the myths of what beauty is 'assigned' to different races plays into our psyches. As Miss Davis said, " I conducted interviews with a variety of black girls in my high school, and a number of issues surfaced concerning the standards of beauty imposed on today???s black girls and how this affects their self-image."
If you want to really learn about this issue of body image from someone who's seen her family and friends suffer from it, I highly suggest taking a look at Davis' work.

That reference from a book of essays might give a false impression about Christian Science.

As a third-generation Christian Scientist, I can tell you it has absolutely no teaching or practice based on dietary theories. We strive to heal any abnormality through prayer and yielding to God's direction, not diet.

In fact Christian Science has helped me take less thought about my diet, and find a natural balance and health in my life. I try to live by the Biblical counsel: "Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? ...but seek ye first the kingdom of God, ... and all these things shall be added unto you."

    It really works for me!

It is not always about the way someone looks. I suffered for 15years with bulemia. It stemmed on control I felt it was the only thing I could control. Some of the derogatory comments do not help in today's society. When you are "fat" you are considered happy. When you are "skinny" you're supposed to be happy. Our society has a mixed bag of what brings happiness.

Not very many Black women suffer from eating disorders. Black women are beautiful and love their curves.... Maybe if people quit focusing on white women imperfections they would be more confident in their size. For those who don???t agree with me I???ll give you an example of size acceptance. Queen latifa and Roseanne, one is a cover girl the other is a fat ass, you tell me which fits where. Need more? Monique and Rosie O Donald, both are huge comedians but who is more excepted as a beautiful big girl???? exactly FAT GIRLS RULE LOL

Hi my names Jovanna(Jovi). I am a 16, ALMOST 17, year old girl, and I struggled with the eating disorder cycle(starve, binge, purge, repeat) for a little over a year. I still struggle mentally somedays, but for the most part I have recovered quickly and well. The website at the top of this comment is my own business site I created a few months ago. I believe God gave me the sickness so I could do something with the experience and help other girls and guys, of every race and age, overcome this and not feel alone. The site has videos, forums, statistics, and a web store. The store has t-shirts and soon bracelets. The t-shirts all have an inspirational word on them...to someone it's inpirational. 15% of all sales go towards eating disorder awareness and research. I think that this article is AWESOME, and everyone needs to know the different forms, feelings, shapes, and colors of eating disorders.
