I watched the Sunday news show and noted the general disdain by the ABC Roundtable regarding John McCain statements regarding Governor Sarah Palin foreign policy creditials as a Governor of Alaska. Everyone thought that there was funny and there was no basis. How does ABC news reconcile that position with Governor Rick Perry of Texas standing up to President George Bush and the World Court opposition to the execution of Mexican nationals who did not have an opportunity to see their Mexican consul. Governor Rick Perry and the State of Texas ignored Bush and the World Court and in so doing conducted an amazing foreign policy for a state. States along the Mexican border such as Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California have had to deal with immigration issues and relations with Mexico on a day to day basis. Those Southern governors do have foreign policy experience. ABC news reporters display their ignorance when they do not recognize the intimacy that exists between states that border foreign countries such as Mexico and Russia.

My next door neighbors are Cuban on one side and Koreans on the other side, We have been neighbors and friends for more than 10 years, so by your thinking I could possibly be an international relations expert. In addition, I own and operate my own business, so I guess that I have executive experience.
I am female and I have 3 children. I have been a PTA president, homeroom captain, Brownie den mother. I
guess that qualifies me a a potential VP.

Alaska has just about as much intercourse with Russia as it does with Mars. The last connection there was when we bought it from Russia for 7 million dollars. Might have reached a little too far there for the nice lady running with Mc Cain.

      • Posted By: olderwiser @ 09/07/2008 12:50:24 PM

Alaska and Russia. It just ain't an intimate relationship. It is no relationship whatsoever, and devoid of foreign policy experience. No Russian immigrants swimming the Bering Strait to work in Alaska. No reaching of hands across the water. No connection since the strait was dry and our original immigrants came to live here. You just can't get there from there.

It would be nice if the candidates would say something about who they are what they have accomplished and how. What they hope to accomplish and how. Stone throwing and name calling does not give us any idea of who to vote for. They do not have a place on the ballet for none of the above. I do not see why we can not hear facts and accomplishments and not just put downs.

    • Posted By: olderwiser @ 09/07/2008 1:04:27 PM

Xamthia, you have touched on a big sore on our current political situation in this country. Extensive research has been done on this subject by people like Karl Rove and other campaign gurus. They have found that the voting public are less and less educated to government and how it functions, and their eyes glaze over when you start talking about the details of how the government will work under a candidate's policies, outside of a few juicy giveaways. The most votes these days come from emotional issues that have little to do with what a president does, but create extreme and deep running emotions, most easily accomplished with matters related to religion and sex. This motivates people to get mad and go out and vote for or against something that the candidate will really not have the ability to perform. Just how many presidents can you name who have ever passed a law concerning abortion? Zip. Zero. Presidents don't pass laws. They just bloviate about something that makes you mad so that you will do something to benefit them. Good luck in your quest.

So let's see if we can summarize the GOP platform based on policies and statements put forth by McCain and Palin.??????

    1) Provide disproportionate tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans (cuz you can never have too much freekin' money)??????

    2) Eliminate all porkbelly spending and federal earmarks (unless you're the governor of Alaska)??????

    3) Show our military might wherever needed overseas (cuz the military has SO many underutilized soldiers with nothing to do. Can you say DRAFT?)??????

    4) Continue to deregulate the energy and financial industries (cuz they are so capable of self-regulation, as can be seen in the oil futures market and the mortgage industry)??????

    5) Keep government small and respect state's right. Do not intrude in the policies and decisions of states (unless you happen to be gay, need an abortion, or use medical marijuana during cancer treatments)??????

    6) Continue to push for abstinence-only sex education in the public schools (cuz you can see how well that worked for Palin's family)??????

    7) Strive to improve public education to make us more competitive in the global economy (except that we'll replace evolution with creationism)??????

    8) Ignore the melting ice caps resulting from global warming (cuz who gives a damn if polar bears go extinct. There are plenty of other animals to hunt anyway)??????

    9) Use up the planet's natural resources as rapidly as we can--drill, baby, drill (cuz that's what God intended)??????

    10) and as McCain was recently quoted, "The economy is basically sound". (cuz, holy crap--he has more houses than he can count, so the economy must be sound FOR HIM).

how can we allow people to continue trashing the other side and get away with not telling us a thing about WHO they are. What they have accomplished and how? what they expect to accomplish and how. How they are going to do about problems we are facing now. I do not like to listen to anyone just attact someone else.
Get with it and tell us facts. If I want to just hear name calling and stone tossing I could call relitives.

Go to snopes.com and search "anne kilkenny". She is a resident of Wasilla and has known "Sarah" since 1992. She gives a very interesting account of Sarah's style of leadership, or, i should say, rule. In the absence of Palin answering direct questions from reporters, we must assume she would follow the same style in Washington.

  • Posted By: sandra lesch @ 09/07/2008 12:55:11 PM

Surely, the rest of the world must think we have lost our minds in presenting Sarah Palin as a vice presidential candidate. Only those who blindly support the dogmatic religious (Christian) right could find rationalization in her selection. These people are total ideological nuts and it is this narrow view of the world that has brought us divisiveness and the loss of prestige in the world.

I really do wonder if she plans to have any more kids in the next few years. She has been bearing children for a least 18 years already. If this latest one was a mistake, I wonder how she would prevent another mistake.

"However, considering the moral, educational, and economic decay of the U.S., Alaskans' who hold themselves to a higher standard might very well decide to at least maintain an arm's length distance from a country in decline."
Quote from the Alaska Independence Party website, FAQ section. This is the party to which Sarah Palin's husband belonged for 7 years, and to which Sarah Palin addressed their convention as follows: "Keep up the good work."
Make no mistake, these are extremists.

If dementia doesn''t get McCain first, Palin will. Palin will gun him down, skin him alive and mount his head on the wall of the oval office...then kick back in the presidential desk with her finger on the trigger of the smoking gun.

She wants to be president real bad - and he''s just an old man who''s mind is getting soft. Won''t be too difficult. Besides Karl Rove and Cheney like her better than McCain.

WOW, I cant believe how out of sorts Obama and his supporters are about McCains VP pick. This has to be a first in history for a top demo. ticket candidate (Mr O) is so worried about competing against a 2nd pick on the Republican pick sending off his surrogates to tear Palin apart as he stands back and objects (yes, but not really). I think that McCain (and Sarah) are onto his old tactics from the Primaries and are geared up to deal with them. LOL. Stay tuned. . .

Palin is a breath of FRESH AIR!: Just over 1 week ago, few Americans could identify Palin by name, face, governing state or even gender and she is praised by GOP leaders who have never even spoken to her.

Palin is a breath of scripted HOT AIR!: Her speech was not her words but written by Bush's speechwriter Matthew Scully to which she is repeating VERBATIM on the stump.

Palin is a FRAUD!: The McCain campaign has openly stated that they will not commit her to any interviews in the future. WHY NOT? Sunday political shows include McCain, Obama and Biden - No Palin.

The GOP is FLOUNDERING: The republicans are asking voters to place "identification" or "appeal" as the most important basis for VP approval.

McCain pledges to CHANGE Washington and REACH ACROSS the aisle!: His VP pick is currently under investigation for POLITICAL MISCONDUCT and ABUSE OF POWER and the RNC delivered no appeal to democrats - only INSULTS.

McCain/Palin = "Me and Those Like Me" First

  • Posted By: lisas @ 09/07/2008 12:20:24 PM

I think that Palin may be a fine human being, an effectuve parent, a popular governor- although I imagine in their early term most governors have not yet managed to alienate most of their citizens-, and probably a generally fun person to be around. It is the things that we don't know about her that suggest that she is no where near ready to be VP.

I don't understand Christian fundamentalists who seem only to require echos of their own religious beliefs
in a candidate to annoint them as capable. Using their yardstick most of their ministers could just as easily be the candidate, Their ministers are the effective CEOs of the congregation; thus they have had executive experience. They are pro life and in most cases capable of delivering a good speech/sermon. If the yardstick for the possible leader of the free world is lowered to this extreme, just imagine how low the US standing will
sink on the world stage. I can just imagine the Iranian and Russian leaders thinking that we are going to follow the cyrrent administration with an administration that gives Ms. Palin second seat.

Sarah Palin is in Big trouble and the information will be Released 3 Weeks Earlier than Expected. Todd Palin & Sarah Palin were harassing the Moneghan
    -----------------------------------
The legislative investigation centers on Palin's dismissal of Monegan, who says that he was contacted several times by the governor and her husband, Todd Palin, and that they pressured him to fire Wooten, who was locked in a contentious divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister, Molly McCann.

"Obviously, there was an issue," says Monegan, who claims that the governor talked to him twice and e-mailed him two or three times about the issue. "And did she want us to do more than discipline him? Yeah, anyone can tell you that.

"No one ever -- not her, not her staff -- has ever said, 'Fire Trooper Wooten,'" adds Monegan. "They all said, 'He's not the sort we'd like to have represent Alaska state troopers.' But the intention was clear."

McCain on Palin: 'Exactly Who I Need'Best Kept Secret in the U.S. Suspense Builds: Who Has McCain Picked?Monegan says that he also met with Todd Palin in the governor's office in January 2007 and claims, "He showed me ... private investigator reports, letters, correspondence" that raised issues suggesting Wooten should be punished.

But Monegan says when he brought the information back to his office and compared it to the commission's internal file on Wooten, which contained complaints filed by Palin's sister, he says he didn't find anything new.

Monegan says Wooten had already been disciplined by his predecessor for the same complaints raised by Palin and her husband.

"They were already done deals and he had already been punished," says Monegan, who adds that the governor called him late at night on his cellphone a few days after his meeting with Todd Palin.

"There was no new evidence, and I called [Todd Palin] back and told him it was a closed case," Monegan says. "He wasn't happy to hear that. I got a subsequent phone call from the governor about it, and she wasn't happy, either."

In total, Monegan says he and his office received 24 calls over 17 months from the governor, her husband and her staff about Wooten.

We still don???t know a lot about Palin except that she???s better at delivering a speech than McCain and that she defends her own pregnant daughter???s right to privacy even as she would have the government intrude to police the reproductive choices of all other women. Most of the rest of the biography supplied by her and the McCain camp is fiction.

She didn???t say ???no thanks??? to the ???Bridge to Nowhere??? until after Congress had already abandoned it but given Alaska a blank check for $223 million in taxpayers??? money anyway. Far from rejecting federal pork, she hired lobbyists to secure her town a disproportionate share of earmarks ($1,000 per resident in 2002, 20 times the per capita average in other states). Though McCain claimed ???she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities,??? she has never issued a single command as head of the Alaska National Guard. As for her ???executive experience??? as mayor, she told her hometown paper in Wasilla, Alaska, in 1996, the year of her election: ???It???s not rocket science. It???s $6 million and 53 employees.??? Her much-advertised crusade against officials abusing their office is now compromised by a bipartisan ethics investigation into charges that she did the same.

Palin as VP does not represent a real choice for women unless a woman is a right-wing ideologue! The Palin speech at the convention was divisive, sarcastic and mocking and along with the insults it was devoid of substance. We have just had eight years of divisiveness and lack of substance, we do not need four more. This VP choice has extreme political views and McCain wants to put her 'one heartbeat away' from the presidency! Palin has stated the Iraq war was a " task that is from God" ; we now know it was a task put forth by liers! I can not vote for this ticket because Palin's extremist views make the prospect of her suddenly being President of the United States way too SCARY!

My take is that she hopes that God's work is being done, not that the war is, de facto, God's work. There's a huge difference there.

Oh, you mean the "God's work" of killing innocent American soldiers and innocent Iraqi people? I thought God and Jesus were about peace. And, there is no difference. Killing is killing especially when it is people that did nothing to us!

Palin has many of the qualities that GWB would admire in a VP. She sees things in black and white and believes everything is a one way street. In other words it is my way or the highway. She also tends to remove people that don't agree with her and even has tried to censor her fellow colleagues from talking with the press. Hmmmm...all these GWB characteristics are now coming back to me. Its interesting that the repubs always cite the Constitution for the right to bear arms but forget about the most fundamental right of them all which is freedom of speech, freedom of the press. What's this about taking books off of library shelfs? I am surprised that McCain picked her because the two are polar opposites that don't even have the same beliefs and values. This is further evidence that this pick was primarily to satisfy the right wing of the party. What was that about "Country First?" I think I missed something there.

Do your country a favor and vote Democratic this election. The country doensn't deserve to suffer another 4 years.
