I am a woman, there is more to me than my uterus. Get over it.
I am a woman, there is more to me than my uterus. Get over it.
THANK YOU! You said it all. I could go on and on (as I am sure you can too) - I suppose I'm not considered a Christian as I believe in womens' rights to control her own body - but that's between me and my God. THANK YOU AGAIN!
But that is just the point. American's have taken this religion hostage. A woman can be a Christian and have the right to choose. Being an American is about having freedoms and that is one of them. True Christians live an upstanding life-their own life, and they make their own decisions. Having a baby is not a community decision.
The hell with the issues! So what if we are mired in a senseless war. 8,000 foreclores a day, 47 million of our fellow citizens without healthcare, unemployment at a 5 year high, the economy on a slow downwards spiral - so what? All the last 5 repub presidents reneged on their promise to shrink the government and balance the budget year after painful year - who cares?
Let's fire up the old culture war and vote in Bush 3. Let's have pointless but heated arguments about Roe v. Wade and small town values, and call each other liberals and conservatives until we are blue in the faces. Lets's bury the issues and talk only about personalities.
Yeaaa!!
Republicans can't govern worth a damn but they sure know how to run a campaign.
neos: You are absolutely right! The campaigning of the Repub party is brilliant -- and it's too bad that so many people fell for it the last two presidential elections -- and appear to be continuing to fall for it. Look at the issues, people! Truly compare where our country was eight years ago with where it is now; and read up on McSame's voting record -- and don't tell me voting "against" the president once or twice makes you a "maverick"
Abortion is murder. I pray that America re-thinks this evil practice.
And Roe v. Wade was won for abortionists with deceitful tactics that misled those that decided the case.
Women have the right over their bodies. But do they have the right to end the lives of the babies they bear?
Yes.
This article is an entirely predictable liberal diatribe from one of the left's most reliable water-carriers. As soon as I read Dhalia's name on the by-line I knew exactly what venom she would spew in the direction of the Palin's. It is both sad and predictable.
The vitriole exhibited by the left towards Sarah Palin and her family is a direct indication of how threatened they are by a strong woman. It underscores my long-held belief that organizations such as NOW and the NAACP don't give a damn about women or African-Americans; they only care about preserving their far-left ideaology - and at all costs.
Palin is not a strong woman- she is and will be a puppet like Bush, especially if the role of President is thrust upon her. You want a strong woman look at Hillary or Pelosi, these are women capable of cognitive thought. Just because Palin can shoot a gun does not make her strong, it just makes her armed.
And talking about organizations that only want to promote their own ideology- lets take an exploratory look at the rights past on that one. I am sure there are no skeletons in the closet, right?
And finally, though I am a Republican, I can assuredly say that the left is not threatened by Palin- that is not what they are all up in arms over- it is the simple fact that she is so unquestionable unqualified for this job, and that the right seems so blind to this fact that scares them. I am not voting for McCain for this simple fact. To me abortion and gay marriage are issues that are so superficial- I want a leader that will effectively change the way we handle our education and Medicare systems, someone that can help the majority of Americans with their home foreclosures (and a President who knows that the Macs are private!) and I want someone that will not continue an imperialist attitude towards other nations. What has allowed Bush to be so arrogant towards unilateral operations in Iraq is his simple lack of knowledge and understanding of other countries and cultures- we do not need another simpleton in the White House.
Palin is not a strong woman. She is a woman who looks strong only by cutting down her opponents. Her acceptance speech was all mud slinging, and she has yet to give an interview to the press. If she were truly a strong woman, she wouldn't need all that coaching by Rove.
Couldn't have said it better myself!
Bristol had every right to choose and she did choose...to have unprotected sex. Why can't people just realize that decisions lead to consequences and those consequences have to be lived with. If you don't want a pregnancy, don't have unprotected sex. It is that simple. Why do we have to resort to killing what many people regard as at least a potential human being in order to eliminate the natural consequences of our bad decisions. Part of being free to choose is dealing with the results of the decisions we do make.
What about victims of rape or incest?
This is a faulty assumption - she may well have had protected sex that didn't work - happens all the time. You don't know, and neither does anyone else - that's why it's called a right to privacy.
"We" don't have to resort to killing anyone. The decision to have an abortion is between the woman, her doctor, and god. It is nobody else's business - that's why it's called a right to privacy.
It's kind of funny that the same people who call themselves "pro-choice" when it comes to abortion become anti-choice when it comes to gun ownership, school choice, health coverage, retirement planning and so many other issues.
Not true. I think there should be stricter gun control but I respect a person's right to own one. I also think people should be able to have the choice of going to the doctor without having to declare bankruptcy or deny themselves valuable, life saving treatment. As far as schools go...that doesn't even make sense. Everyone can choose what school they wish to attend. Everyone can choose retirement planning, too. I won't be able to draw on SSN ever, so I put my money in stocks and deferred compensation. I don't understand your point?
I think that women should not have the domain of their bodies intruded upon by special intrest groups. I'm fine with guns, and as long as they're not being used to shoot people, than great. I like the idea of "school of choice", and i agree that all parents in the ghettos should be able to choose to send their kids into nice upper-class suburban schools. Retirement planning, well i think you may be drifting into a rant on that.
Sarah Palin's position is not at all confusing if you consider that she (and many of us) believe that life begins at conception and therefore the fetus has the same right to life as the mother. Just because the mother can voice her wishes and the fetus can't, we can reasonable assume it would choose life over death. And, just because the mother has a voice doesn't mean her rights trump those of another (silent) human being. The right to life is one granted to all humans, whether able to speak or not. Providing an exception to save the mother's life is considered an acceptable (but regrettable) necessity if the doctor believes the mother will live through the sacrifice of the fetus since saving the fetus at the mother's expense might result in two deaths instead of one.
I suppose you also oppose stem cell research?
Ms. Lithwick, you and most of the rest of your party gravely miss the premise of the pro-choice argument. It is not, as you claim, whether grown women are fit to decide to abort a pregnancy. It is that fit or not, abortion is murder. To understand how we feel, please try a simple exercise. Imagine a fully born 1 week-old baby, maybe the result of a rape, maybe with defects, or maybe just not wanted or unexpected. What are the mother's options? Would you argue in that case that the anyone who advocates for that baby's right to live are questioning "whether women are fit" to decide to terminate that baby's life? Of course you wouldn't.
Go ahead, argue that babies aren't alive, or an individual, or a soul, or however you phrase it, until a certain number of weeks or until after labor or whatever the latest science journal has written. We believe that babies are people at the moment of conception, and that they are entitled to the most basic of human rights - life. That has nothing to do with how " fit to decide to abort a pregnancy" a grown woman is. It has everything to do with advocating for the most vulnerable of society for the most fundamental of gifts.
It seems that you are gravely unaware of the many sides of this arguement. Abortion is murder is your opinion, not a fact. Many people hold this same opinion, but it's still just an opinion. 2+2=4: fact. Burning an American Flag should be illegal: opinion. There are more religions than just Christianity: fact. America should base its abortion laws on Christian doctrine: opinion.
Thats whats great about America, everyone can have opinions; the problem with America, too many people front their opinions as facts. Take the good with the bad ya'll.
Obviously these people have never taken any philosophy classes. Different philosophers have argued both for and against abortion. Both sides have interesting points. I don't think anything will change no matter what party is in control--there would be too much social backlash.
Abortion is one of the meaningless platforms trotted out every election for Republican support. Is it really going to change? No. In 35 years, NO Republican president has changed it. I find it funny that the same tired old platform is in focus when we have very REAL problems--astronomical debt, an out of control war (yeah yeah the surge is working whatever), housing crisis, credit crunch, shaky economy, immigration issues, health care disasters etc etc. Abortion is NOT a key issue. Silly Republicans.
John Edwards affair and probable love child was well known, but a taboo subject for the American press for months while he ran for President because his personal life and family weren't relevant. At least that's what we were told by the main stream press when asked why the Enquirer had to break such a major story. Yet...the Newsweek bureau of the Obama campaign finds it fit to print an article with the headline "Bristol's Choice". Bristol who? Is there a Bristol running for office? No Bristol is the 17 year old minor daughter of the VP nominee for President. So of course we don't have to wait months for the Enquirer to give us the gossip....we get it right in a headline. Leaving aside the incredible double standard, complete unfairness, and downright evil minded meanness toward a 17 year old girl, pro-life positions are hardly something new in American Politics. One of "The ONE" key suppoters Gov Casey of PA holds the same pro-life positions. but I doubt if anything short of Gov Palin choosing to chop up and flush her downs syndrome baby, prior to its birth, would satisfy Ms Lithwick in regard to Gov Palin's feminist credentials, but in my opinion she's a true feminist, and doesn't need Ms lithwick's approval to validate her values, and thank God she has some. Oops Ms Lithwich...I'm sorry....I shouldn't have said the G word should I? I hope that "The ONE" and all of his worshippers continue with these disgusting and filthy attacks because I think each one shows what kind of man "The Obama" is, and what kind of people he would empower if elected President!
Here's a quesion, contingent on your stance as being pro-life, and not relating to abortion: Would you take the life of Osama Bin Laden given the chance; or Adolf Hitler had you been in the position to do so?
Here are the options:
1. Have the baby and provide for adoption
2. Have the baby and rear it alone
3. Have the baby and count on support from the biological father
3. Have the baby and marry the biological father
I notice that: A) have the baby and get support from the crowd demanding you have the baby, or, B) Rely on the federal government to support the baby.
Just saying.
Why weren't those on your list?
1973 to 2008; Let's see - is my math correct - that's 35 years? For 35 years many of those supporting Roe vs Wade have tried to terrify people into believing that if this particular case were overturned that the US would immediately fall back to back room, dirty-handed, untrained, money-grubbing murders performing abortions. Frankly, nothing is further from reality. #1 - despite 28 years of Republican administrations - Roe vs Wade hasn't been overturned and McCain-Palin are highly unlikely to get it overturned. But even if it was overturned, what is most likely to happen is that State legislatures would pass their own laws. Now many don't want State legislatures to be involved because - ooohhhh, small-minded parochial state legislators aren't beholden enough to those who support Roe vs Wade. If you support democracy - you support it even when the State legislators don't vote your way. You don't like how they vote - organize, promote, publicize, advocate and get new state legislators. But, please please stop throwing up false premises about Roe vs Wade that 35 years of reality have proven to be false.
There is no "Right to Privacy" in the four corners of the Constitution. Read it. It is a judicial fiction.
The bill of rights are a judicial fiction?
A pity that the Republicans McCain and Palin are so hell-bent on playing God and insisting their children have babies if they make a hormonally driven mistake in their adolescent years. My own parents would not have been so adamant that I ruin my life for the sake of an unborn fetus, but they are staunch christians too.
Palin's choice is to run for VP while her daughter is making life-changing mistakes, struggling with a famous mom whose new personna means everything they do is intensely scrutinized by the worldwide press... I'd be mortified if I were in their shoes - these kids need their privacy and it's just a terrible shame they get pulled into their parents' world literally OVERNIGHT by a self-serving presidential candidate who claims to disdain "Me First" politicians... that was such an ironic speech he gave at his convention.
Oh well, who am I to judge? I feel sorry for the family as they are obviously quite simple and small-town, so the international attention must be just totally awful. It would be for ANYONE. It's scary, I bet. I'd be terrified too.
Still, I will not vote for a person, male or female, who will stifle womens' rights -- and if that is the "change" that's coming to Washington on a McCain-Palin ticket, it is truly a national tragedy, and potentially an international travesty.
Nice of you to look down your nose at those "quite simple and small town" people that don't have a clue. Their simple minds surely can't handle the stress and scrutiny. And the libs try to make the repubs out to be fear mongers, what a joke. BTW, what other rights do you think they are going to squash?
it appears that if you haven't aborted at least once the Dems don't want you ...
Fine!
The Dems have the trash - we get the creme dela creme.
No news here!
Since when was "must have been" true journalism (see the second sentence of the article)? What happened to reporting facts? Regardless of the topic, and regardless of your political affiliation, this was a shabby attempt at journalism, with wild assertions, biased assumptions, and broad generalizations thrown in willy-nilly in an attempt to be passed off as a thoughtful discussion. In order for the "If A, then B" method of proof to work, the two ideas should at least be related. And don't get me started on the fact that not once did the author indicate she had spoken to either Bristol or Governor Palin. It's sad that the fifth estate, once revered as a pillar in the foundation of this great country, has sunk to the depths of degredation to become editorial supposition, "throw-it-out-there-to-see-if-it-sticks" irresponsibility, and weak rhetoric. This magazine should change its name to Editorialweek. It's pathetic.
So if a woman is raped; her choice ends? Republican hypocracy has no bounds. They want goverment out of people's life but they will nmake law and stop adults making decisions about their bodies. what next; sex in the missionary postion only?
Oh, I guess its the dems that have a big tent. There are many repubs that have differing views on abortion. I know some that believe there are times when an abortion may be necessary such as in the cases of rape, incest, and even protecting the life of the mother. However, I think most of us are united in the fact that it is something that should not be used as birth control. We don't believe parental rights cease if a teen becomes pregnant,. We don't believe the government should be paying for an abortion if someone does choose to have one. And, that organizations such as Planned Parenthood provide sufficient information regarding the risks and possible mental and physical ramifications of choosing to abort.
Ms. Lithwick, you and most of the rest of your party gravely miss the premise of the pro-choice argument. It is not, as you claim, whether grown women are fit to decide to abort a pregnancy. It is that fit or not, abortion is murder. To understand how we feel, please try a simple exercise. So, let???s get this straight: Palin has requested privacy and compassion for her daughter (which Bristol deserves, btw), but wants to make my daughter???s choices, including sex education and contraception, her business and dictate it through legislature.
Abortion is a hot topic, but let???s make it perfectly clear ??? pro-choice is just that, about choice. Abortion is the last option for the truly pro-choice because it is such a difficult choice. No one is running around willy-nilly saying ???Hey, I think I???ll have an abortion today.??? The preference for pro-choice is Prevention First which includes comprehensive sex education, not abstinence-only, but abstinence along with accurate information about how to protect yourself physically and emotionally. After prevention fails, the choices then fall to keeping the child, adoption or abortion ??? with, again, abortion being the last option. Speak of protecting life all you want, but for those women who have made that extremely difficult decision to have an abortion, at least protect their health and keep them from having to go to back-alley ???doctors??? or doing self-abortions which have lead to numerous women???s deaths as well.
For those who want to make this a religious issue: remember the 1st Amendment, folks? It didn???t say freedom of the religious right ??? it said religion, period. And before anyone gets bent out of shape claiming this country was based on Christianity, let???s remember that Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin were Deists and that John Adams and Robert Treat Paine were Unitarians. Thomas Jefferson was the most ardent supporter of our religious freedom and was the principle author of the Declaration of Independence. Image that ??? a Deist fighting for your rights and everyone else???s. How about keep your theocracy out of our democracy.
If you???re fiscally conservative and worry about handouts, exactly what do you propose to do with the extra population of unwanted children? Many teenage parents end up not going to college and work low-paying jobs, unable to pay for insurance. Our foster care system is overflowing with children that weren???t adopted and broken in so many ways that you can???t even imagine. So, support an unborn child, but as soon as they???re born, ditch them onto the poverty wheel where they belong, right? Worried about big government and spending? Well, your good ole Bushy boy has spent more money than any president in 30 years and has created new department after new department after new department.
Both McCain and Palin have cut budgets for pregnant teens (good thing Bristol comes from a rich family worth $9 mil), continue imposing abstinence-only programs full of lies re: contraceptives, and want insurance companies to stop coverage for birth control. What message does that send out? Consider this warning from Sinclair Lewis when choosing McCain/Palin: "When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.???
There is no "Right to Privacy" in the Constitution. Read it. It is a judicial fiction. Overturning Roe v. Wade would not make abortion illeagal. It would just make states free to pass laws restricting--partially or completly--abortion. I would not support a total ban on abortion personally. However, this matter should be decided by the representive elected by the people--not judges appointed for life. There simply is no constitutional right to an abortion. If you think their should be, support a constitutional amendment. granting a right to an abortion. Even Ginsburg has acknowledged that Roe is a thinly reasoned peice of judicial activism. So much misinformation--from both sides--on this issue.
I am 100% appalled at the idea that McCain and Palin, amongst others have found that they and they alone have the right to determine what is best for millions of American women. I myself am opposed to abortion in general, however if it comes down to a matter of what is best for all parties (including the unborn child), then please do as you must. However for those who have fought to give women the right to have their say concerning not only their bodies, but their lives, to think that these people are weaseling their way in by saying that you do not have the right to choose disgusts me. I mean if this is where it starts, then where does it end? Do we as women revert to the days of being a man's property? Being forced not to have a single thought as it might prove to taxing for our delicate feminine minds??? Please, as Americans we need to fight this.
Its amazing you use the term all parties. Unfortunately that doesn't include the father. Anyway, that is a whole other topic. Before one becomes too concerned with McCain/Palin imposing their personal views, there is no proof that they have done so in their public offices other than saying that government should not be paying for abortions, parents should receive advance notification (which is required with amy other medical procedure), Planned Parenthood and others should be more responsible in representing the risks and possible ramifications, and partial birth abortion should be banned (a procedure most Americans, male and female are in agreement with). Finally, I would like to think that most people can agree that abortion as a means of birth control is wrong.
