Palin's inexperience in foreign policy is what troubles me the most. However, one thing not mentioned is that she requested more earmarks than any other state and that she kept the money that was intended to build the infamous "bridge to nowhere" even after she supposedly said "no thank you"... and to top it off, she is still building a road to the place where the bridge was going to be. Guess who's funding the road to the "bridge to nowhere"... if you pay taxes, you are. Could McCain and Palin's candidacy really mean the death of true conservatism? Bush paved the way and left his bad mark, will they continue his legacy of giving the Republican Party and bad name?

    • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/10/2008 12:29:00 AM

What foreign policy does Obama have? That's precisely why he picked Biden for his VP. Furthermore, the Senator for Alaska requested the earmark for the Bridge and both Obama and Biden voted for it ... twice. Geez, how many times does this have to be brought up ... read prior posts!

      • Posted By: KiwisCanFly @ 09/10/2008 12:58:25 AM

So is that ok with u, that Gov Palin requested an earmark for the Bridge to Nowhere and then states in her acceptance speech that she said 'no thanks'? That it is ok that she repeatedly distorts this in her stump speeches. Your only defense, it appears to divert the issue to what Obama or Biden do.

        • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/10/2008 8:08:35 AM

OK Lets get this straight once and for all. When Palin ran for Governor. The "Bridge to Nowhere" was supposed to be a $200 million dollar roads project that would give increased access to airports and stimulate commerce. She supported it. However, when the project was still in the planning stages, the costs had escalated to over $400million and there were significant delays. It no longer made fiscal sense to proceed with the project. So She canned State support of the project. The original $200 million was reallocated to other projects and the extra $200 million, which Obama and Biden voted to give here, she refused.

On the issue of the librarian Mary Ellen Emmons.

Yes, Gov Palin as Mayor of Wasilla, requested 3 times (not twice) of Emmons her opinion on banning certain books in the Wasilla Public Library. There was no book list for banning.

Emmon???s repeatedly answered that she ???flatly refused to consider any kind of censorship.???

Yes, Palin sent a letter of termination to Emmons. Some refer to it as a letter of resignation. What is the difference?

The reason Palin offered, Emmons ???did not fully support her.???

Yes, Palin reneged on the termination of Emmons, 1 day later due to the local uproar.

A week and a half later a group, calling themselves Concerned Citizens of Wasilla, of local residents discussed a recall, but decided it would be more effective and less divisive to try to work with Palin. As reported on 2/11/97 Anchorage Daily News (AK). ???Members say they're concerned about the direction taken by Palin since her election last fall, and discussed a recall.???

Palin was pushed into hiring an Administrator to run the small town (pop 5,500 at the time Palin took office).

Prove it. Produce some documentation ( not some "news article" on the Daily Kos) that backs up your "facts". Until then I 'll stand by FactCheck.org , a NON PARTISAN and objective source of facts.

People believe what they want about candidates in political campaigns. Facts rarely matter. If one supports a candidate usually nothing negative about that candidate is believed. If one opposes a candidate usually everything negative is believed.

This is a mockery of due diligence. You get a D-. Also, I have never seen a similar article entitled: Sliming Obama.

  • Posted By: ringthebells @ 09/10/2008 6:46:08 AM

It seems that you are failing to fulfill your stated mission to provide facts free of spin in your description of Palin's interactions wit the librarian.

I'd like a list of questions she asked the librarian and the books Palin discussed.

Please confirm without qualification that Palin did fire the librarian. Can you provide a copy of te firing letter.

Please describe the response from the town. What motivated them to protest against the firing.

How and when did Paline retract the termination of the librarian.

Is the librarian available to provide a description of the events?

  • Posted By: buckfoss @ 09/10/2008 5:44:04 AM

Your article is the sliming - and it's of your own organization.

I have always looked to factcheck.org for unbiased reporting of facts, clearly in this case your missed the facts. Let's work this out .... why would a mayor ask THREE times about how the librarian would feel if she banned books, and three times is told that she just wouldn't do it and there is a standard policy in place for challenging books? Do you "rhetorically" need to ask this THREE times (see your own posting of the Matsu Frontiersman - it's 3 not 2). Then shortly thereafter Mayor Palin fires the librarian, the head of the state librarians organization, for "not supporting her". WHAT? How can a librarian not support the Mayor??? Did Palin mention budget or anything else???? Nope. You do the math - it's not too hard.

Then you state that Palin wasn't a part of the Alaska Independence Party, but what about that video?

I don't need to go on - factcheck.org has failed in their mission on this one. You've ignored facts and been willfully ignorant of connecting the dots on others ... it's very Bush-Cheney of you. I am extremely dissapointed.

  • Posted By: opaquemurdock @ 09/10/2008 5:41:33 AM

I thought factcheck.org's mission was to be free of opinion? That summary of the library incident sure sounds like it leans towards opinion to me.

You have one side telling you that what could have been a cleverly crafted statement was pressure and another saying it was a hypothetical question of policy? Remain neutral at least! She had many people in an uproar over this and the way you have phrased the summary lets her off the hook completely. If she said just the things you cite and was not CLEAR that she did not mean them to be taken literally than at the very least she is an idiot. I for one do not believe that ANY elected official should EVER have that conversation with a librarian for any reason. If you had just stayed in the dead center she would have looked as bad as she should for such bad behavior! Of course the list is bogus... thats something some moron (or person trying to discredit the story) has tacked onto it. Isn't that obvious that it has nothing to do with the facts? Why do you put so much emphasis on it?

"It is worth noting that, in an update, the Frontiersman points out that no book was ever banned from the library???s shelves. "

Why? thats not the point at all. The fact that she may have tried and failed should not matter in the least. The fact that she merely uttered the words is enough to make her forever unfit to serve. And no one is contesting that.

Allow me to clean the summary up for you...

She did not directly demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library although it is contested whether her statements were meant to suggested that they should be removed. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, after raising the issue on at least two occasions, the librarian was terminated, but was then rehired after one day and continued in her job through most of Palin's first term. The circulated list of books is fake and does not relate to the story.

  • Posted By: Berkana @ 09/10/2008 4:01:25 AM

If Palin was never part of the Alaska Independence Party, why does a video of a convention of the AIP show their chairman saying that she's a member, that she switched to the Republican party to be a viable candidate, and that one of their objectives was to get AIP sympathizers into positions of power such as mayors and the governor's office? In the video, the AIP's chairman said "Our current governor who I mentioned at the last conference, the one we were hoping would get elected, Sarah Palin, did get elected . . . .and there was a lot of talk about her moving up. She was an AIP member before she got the job as mayor . . . "

Gender is not an issue for me.

If I read a remark that is sexist I will comment upon that fact.

I will not allow Sarah's gender to prohibit me from criticising her on her record, or what she says. I will hold her to the same vetting standard in which Obama has been through.

I believe in equal gender ethics and I will not be party to any form of psuedo victim-hood equally I will not be party to sexism.

With regard to her mothering, her daughters pregnancy, or any other family issue, I believe that is her concern. Private and personal.

My first comment on Gov Palin's speech last night.

???I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ???community organizer,??? except that you have actual responsibilities.???

YUP, Sarah, CO???s do have actual responsibilities too.

Some think being a CO is soup serving.

    CO Standard Job Description:

administration, planning, policy decision-making, program and leadership development and action implementation, public relations activities, and service activities.

But CO work takes form within the dynamics of community and struggle, requiring organizers to have an extraordinary range of competencies.

    Roles and Responsibility of CO:

challenge people to act on behalf of their common interests

develop new relationships out of old ones - sometimes by linking one person to another and sometimes by linking whole networks of people together.

creating opportunities for people to deliberate to reinterpret these circumstances in ways that open up new possibilities for action.

People are recruited, battles fought and organizations built through highly energized, intensely focused campaigns.

    Build community by developing leadership.

Mr Giuliani says ???it???s his first problem on his resume???.

Not true, ???Barack for America??? is a study on Community Organizing expertise. Your mocking Sarah is ill-informed!

Like Mr Giuliani said, ???this is no time for on-the-job training???.

I'm still not buying it. You can dress it up any way you want, but BHO's experience pales in comparison to even Palin's, much less McCain. You should stop drawing attention to his lack of experience, it just makes him look more foolish. Palin has been a Mayor, Governor and Chief Executive responsible for a 7 billion dollar budget for goodness sake. Obama was in the Senate for 134 days before he started running for Pres. Apples and oranges.

      • Posted By: Not buying it at all @ 09/10/2008 3:15:29 AM

jackie kays is reaching... admiting that they were lies that they pushed forward but.... but... but..... and slanders more with "opinions." and you know she's mean and vicious, how? her speech?

true_patriot now says we need to talk issues.... that's what Republicans have been trying to say all along.... now that you gus are busted... you want to talk issues.... you guys have issues....

oh and other here talking about how Palin panders.... your Big Boss O is the Pander King. Check out his taxes.. it is public information and he makes 4 million... he never tells who's pandering the poor here? McCain and his wife make more because of her family's beer but he never did say he was poor. But Obama... like he really feels the pinch of gas today.

Haters of Palin and McCain just keep frying on in your hate and your own filth. The lies in the mybarackobama group just made me so sick that i just had to leave and take my vote with me. and they had the audacity of hope to come out on top with all the lies as they massed email everyone with all the media's websites telling Obamites to contact editors to send in the anti-Palin rumors to "show the world The Real Palin" because they really believed them all to be FACTS despite that I had pointed out that there was no proof or factcheck.org already confirmed them false, along with the bikini picture. i got the email to prove it. some of the supporters in this San Diego group were literally extremists to my non-partisan and innocent-til-proven-guilty mentality that i got hate mail. well 3 days later... all have been proven lies and media catches on. i bet they are in there saying that media is biased against them - the same media sources that had been supporting their cause.. never called that when they were up in the polls. oh and their reason why they are down in the polls? one said that Obama supporters don;t use landlines. they use cells phones... i see i'm not the only one who got sick of the crap.

oh and the Obamites will never face that the economy.has more to do with the injustice of 9/11 and Democartic-led Pelosi (who has half the approval rate of Bush) because Obama will never tell them that truth. He will keep chanting that "same old 8 years" chant he got them chanting. Go get some landline phones.

Obama made most of his recent millions from his book that he wrote.

Palin has more lise outstanding than truths.

And dont forget Congress was controlled by the Republicans for the 7 out of the last 8 years.

Lets be honest. We all know that McCain could have picked a goat and most of these people would have supported it just not to vote for you know who (the Black guy) Everyone wants to pretend that its not about race but how else would you like to explain it. Whether you are a Dem or Repub your house is not worth half of what it was and you are paying to much for gas. America is still in Iraq and by the way the reports came out a long time ago that there were no weapons of MD. How can you rationalize the fact that Our President lied to us to go to a war. There is no explaining that away. You cannot like the way we are seen abroad and you have to admit this is not a great time for America. We have had a Republican in the White House for 8 years and a Rep controlled house for 6 of those 8. Isnt that what matters the most? Not Race or Gender. Grow up people.

    • Posted By: AnyoneButTheCommie @ 09/09/2008 10:16:17 PM

How else do you explain it? HE'S A MARXIST AND THE #1 LIBERAL IN THE SENATE. Oh, and his position changes daily, depending on the weather. What else is there to say?

      • Posted By: Pupster @ 09/09/2008 10:40:43 PM

You are making me laugh. You just called Obama a Marxist the day after this Repub administration just bailed out Freddie/Fannie. They just socialized the losses of 2 of the largest private institutions in the country. That was a couple months after they bailed out Bear Stearns. And they are about to give the auto industry $50 billion of taxpayer money, according to the CEO of Ford.

You know why they were forced to do this? Because of Bush's reckless deregulation policies and his gutting of the regulatory bodies that were supposed to prevent these crazy implosions from happening.

So feel free to wrongly call Obama a Marxist, you fool, despite that Repubs are socializing everything at a rapid pace on our tax dollars. You should really learn what a Marxist is, BTW. You sound like an ignorant hillbilly when you throw out labels that don't apply.

        • Posted By: AnyoneButTheCommie @ 09/09/2008 11:12:07 PM

I'm quite aware of what a Marxist is, thank you. Obama is a Marxist. His father was a communist. At the end of the day I believe that you will see the Dems in the thick of the Freddie/Fannie meltdown. You can't require that these organizations take on risky loans from "redlined" neighborhoods and then slink away when all the subprimes fail. Unfortunately, nationalizing these institutions was necessary to prevent further damage to the economy. It's only a short-term solution though - the next Pres will have to come up with the final solution. By the way, Dems were the top 4 recipients of campaign $$ from Freddie and Fannie.

          • Posted By: Pupster @ 09/10/2008 12:05:59 AM

Actually, Paulson with backing from Bush did it all on his own. In fact, Chris Dodd is pissed about it because he wasn't consulted. Sadly, if you check out the stats, more prime mortgages are defaulting than sub-prime, and most of the risky loans were peddled by shady operators like Countrywide, who used fraud in the name of more profits. Didn't quite work out the way Bush was bragging about when he was going on and on about home ownership.

Why don't you just admit that Bush screwed up the economy? Seriously, admitting the problem is the first step to your recovery.

            • Posted By: AnyoneButTheCommie @ 09/10/2008 3:07:33 AM

Bush doesn't write the legislation you idiot. If you can't see that Freddie and Fannie are entrenched liberal institutions then you are blind too. The facts will come out in time, but from what I've read so far, the Dems are as culpable and probably more so than the Repubs. When home prices were soaring, it was "unfair" that the "disadvantaged" couldn't get a mortgage. This led to pressure on lenders to ease requirements to allow more risky loans, which Fannie and Freddie were forced to back. Well, duh, there was a reason for pre-qualifying applicants. Many of the no-doc/liar-loans defaulted at or even prior to the first ARM adjustment. Of course, the ripple effect is still happening, and dragging prime mortgages down too. But it all goes back to thinking you can get something for nothing.

    • Posted By: Pupster @ 09/09/2008 9:59:10 PM

No, it's the conservatives who are criticizing her about staying at home with her baby -- Dr. Laura!!

The rest of us object to her because she's a religious nutjob who want to take away women's reproductive rights, barely educated to the point that she refuses to answer any press questions in fear that it will reveal how dumb she is, lying about her record as a reformer, has barely any experience in politics or in life, and uses sexism as a bludgeon to avoid criticism, even though she called Hillary Clinton a "whiner" for doing the same thing.

But hey, believe whatever crazy you want.

Don't you recall the criticism around BHO during the debates - he was masterful at talking on and on but saying nothing. Pretty words and no substance. We need change, blah blah blah. Bush lied, blah blah blah. Tax the rich, blah blah blah. Global warming, blah blah blah.

  • Posted By: true_patriot @ 09/09/2008 10:15:50 PM

I just watched the news reporting how people think Obama is Muslim, doesn't wear a flag pin, etc. It sure would have been nice to see a FactCheck article on Obama--like months ago, or even now! And he's not the unknown from a small town in Alaska that Palin is.

    • Posted By: AnyoneButTheCommie @ 09/10/2008 2:45:33 AM

But Obama is a Muslim and doesn't wear a flag pin. It was confirmed by Mumar Khadafi (as reliable a source as any espoused on this site). Apparently, the Arabs in the Middle East are quite sure that Obama is a Muslim brother. Khadafi went on about this and based it on the Islamic education that BHO received when he lived over there as a child.

My personal take is that he might not be a practicing Muslim, but it's unclear whether he is a Muslim sympathizer. Didn't Obama ask rhetorically for us to come around to the Islamic way of thinking when he gave his big rock-star speech in Germany recently? Can't remember the exact quote.

Wow this is an extremely weak piece for Fact Check

    Look deeper...

    1. She got the librarian fired:
Anchorage Daily News Sept. 4, 2008
    http://www.adn.com/sarah-palin/story/515512.html
"According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn't fully support her and had to go."

    2. She supported teaching creationism in schools:
Anchorage Daily News Oct. 27, 2006
    http://dwb.adn.com/news/politics/elections/story/8347904p-8243554c.html

PALIN: "Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information. "Healthy debate is so important and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject -- creationism and evolution. It's been a healthy foundation for me. But don't be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides."

    3. She was a brigader for Pat Buchanan as described by Pat see on you tube:

Thank you Newsweek for doing the McCain Campaign's job for them. You give no evidence to back up your debunking of her religious beliefs. In addition, giving credence to Creationism as a valid education format proves that you have an agenda that extends beyond reporting the news. I am sickened to see the media cower in the face of this vapid, empty hateful woman. Shame on you,.

    • Posted By: AnyoneButTheCommie @ 09/10/2008 2:10:24 AM

Vapid, hateful woman? You sound really crazy. I guess it's a perspective thing. Most of the country has the perspective that disagrees with yours. In any event, do you think you can shake up the status quo (i.e. Change) without stepping on toes and creating enemies? You are naive if you believe otherwise.

  • Posted By: Justpeachy @ 09/10/2008 1:45:47 AM

Will someone in the media please stand up and explain to the McCain/Palin ticket that we are in the middle of an election? The voters are supposed to have access to the people involved. Obama has been criticized as a star or celebrity for drawing large crowds, but we are supposed to accept that Palin is actually TREATED as a rock star that refuses to talk with anyone, is just whisked onstage to perform her set, then is chaperoned back to the tour bus. This is so disrespectful of the voters. Isn't she supposed to actually participate in the national discussion so that she may earn our vote? Her campaign manager actually said she had to be treated "with deference" or she wouldn't grant interviews. Isn't this upside down? Isn't she supposed to be interviewing for a public service job? What happened to "Country First"? The citizens of this nation ARE the country. Is this the new paradigm where the media just goes along with whatever the campaigns say?

    • Posted By: AnyoneButTheCommie @ 09/10/2008 2:00:08 AM

Are you serious? It's obvious why she isn't granting interviews - the media is basically lined up like a firing squad against her. After pitching softballs to Obama for the last year, all of a sudden the media gets aggressive with Palin? Why shouldn't she have the deference of the media?

But since you brought it up, why does Obama get to duck the Town Hall meetings with McCain? Same situation as far as I'm concerned. Ducking the Town Halls means less chance for Obama to be exposed for the stammering, bumbling orator he can be when the teleprompter isn't working.

    • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/10/2008 1:53:56 AM

Oh, for goodness sake, for the hundredth time, ABC is spending two days with her this week for interviews with no restrictions. Please watch, listen or read the news ... it was announced early yesterday ... old news by now.

Knowing that she was having a down syndrom baby, did Palin take a 10 - 12 hour flight from Texas to Alaska while 8 months pregnant and just after her water broke just to avoid having the baby out of Alaska? Was Palin pregnant when she got married?

Okay...I was wrong about the Troopergate. Here is what I found....

    Palin's bogus "Troopergate"

    You might find this interesting....

There is a time-line and info.

    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2072102/posts

Monegan admits to the Anchorage press that NO ONE (Gov. Palin, Palin's husband or Palin's staff) asked that trooper Wooten be fired.

Monegan is a governor appointee and can be fired at any time for any reason (or no reason)

The chief investigator/overseer admitted (before any depositions or investigating) that it will be an "October Surprise", "damaging to the governor", and even hinted at possible criminal charges (aka: impeachment).

In other words, she used her power on the taxpayer dime for a personal vendetta that had nothing to do with how the guy did his job. Anyway, we don't know all the facts, but her aides are about to be subpoenaed and we'll all find out in about a month.

A cop who tasers his step-child has no business being a cop. Or, do you think child abuse is okay if your a cop?

Just because the cop is her x-BIL, if she knows that he is abusing his step-child, she has a duty to report it.
