Palin's inexperience in foreign policy is what troubles me the most. However, one thing not mentioned is that she requested more earmarks than any other state and that she kept the money that was intended to build the infamous "bridge to nowhere" even after she supposedly said "no thank you"... and to top it off, she is still building a road to the place where the bridge was going to be. Guess who's funding the road to the "bridge to nowhere"... if you pay taxes, you are. Could McCain and Palin's candidacy really mean the death of true conservatism? Bush paved the way and left his bad mark, will they continue his legacy of giving the Republican Party and bad name?

It is interesting that the mainstream "liberal" press is going way out of thier way to prove that Palin's record is stated accurately and that internet and other rumors are varified or checked, however the same media does not run expansive stories on al the Obama slime that has been sent all over the world. Treat her like you treated every other politician..... Palin had "about faced" on a lot of things and why does the media give her a pass for not being interviewed or keeping her at bay just long enough so an intelligent answer can be drilled into her head for a real hard question. No doubt she is a good mother, but don't tell me she doesn't use her kids to further her career. It is OK for her to use Trig to point out what a leader she is for the Disabled Children and families of our nation, but we can't ask her if she is in favor of sex education in schools because it touches on her daughter's pregnance. Can you imagine if Chelsea Clinton had gotten pregnant? The right wingers and the press would have been all over that one in a second and making a big moral thing about it. Dan Quayle criticiizes Murphy Brown and now the Republican right treats this girl as if she and her hockey " I dont want to have children..." boyfriend like Mary and Joseph with no room in the inn. Why was his My Space taken down???? He isn't even related to this woman and his space was removed. Wierd......But let's not ask Madonna Palin.....it will hurt her family. Remember what the press did to Geraldine Ferraro???? Equal footing with media darlings is never quite the same.

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/10/2008 12:12:23 AM

Geraldine Ferraros kids had graduated college by the time she got nominated. They were adults. These kids are just kids.

Just when I was going to change the news page on my internet screen you finally print somethng objective. No one is asking you to print pro-Palin stuff. But all this pro-Obama and anti-Palin stuff from you guys was getting scary. I hope you keep it on the center track from here out. Otherwise, I'm ready to change my news source.

    • Posted By: chindognyc @ 09/09/2008 3:29:58 PM

I would rather you change. You are more pro-Palin than anything.

      • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/10/2008 12:09:10 AM

No. She is just asking for more unbiased news. An article that discredits left wing lies is not a right wing article. it is just an article that discredits left wing lies. I guess these were "inconvenient truths" for you liberals weren't they....

  • Posted By: poppi @ 09/09/2008 10:43:09 PM

Gimmee a break!!! Can we get on about the issues and STOP all the mud slinging mostly absurd rumors?

    • Posted By: bunkster @ 09/09/2008 11:43:17 PM

Well, the Republicans did start it, now didn't they. Seems they just can't take their own medicine.

      • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/10/2008 12:08:28 AM

      • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/10/2008 12:07:08 AM

The Republicans started it? When? With what? Both parties are equally guilty and you know it. But, please, tell me the date and the statement when the Republicans started it.

  • Posted By: Twixlen @ 09/09/2008 3:18:58 PM

It's interesting that Newsweek is posting this bit of investigation from FackCheck.org, but not all the falsehoods that were in her speech, in McCain's speeches, in RuGui's speeches, etc. Nor the FactCheck.org bits on how false some of the McCain ads are. Judging by that amount of falsehood, the campaign is more interested in spreading falsehood themselves!

Way to go "liberal media" --- love that balance.

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/10/2008 12:04:59 AM

Everything you discussed IS on factcheck.org. You just didn't bother to check your facts before you bashed the checkers of facts!

Sarah Palin continues to not answer questions from the media. This matter needs to be addressed for citizens to be able to make an informed decision. If she won't answer questions now, how can she be ready to be the Vice President. MSNBC can you please address the fact that she will not answer questions about foreign policy, her experience, and how she continue to lie about her stance on the bridge to nowhere.

    • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/10/2008 12:04:47 AM

Its quite old news by now ... but I guess you haven't heard ... it was announced early yesterday (old by news standards) ... ABC will be spending two days with her this week for multiple interviews with no restrictions. This is just the start. Wow, people today are so impatient and want everything NOW!

    • Posted By: bunkster @ 09/09/2008 11:44:27 PM

Her utter contempt for the press, which which represents US is despicable. She is just as elitist and just as much a SOB as Dubya!

      • Posted By: AnyoneButTheCommie @ 09/10/2008 12:03:40 AM

"which represent US". No kidding. The media has been representing the Dems for quite some time now. Palin avoiding the media is not much different than Obama ducking the Town Hall meetings McCain wanted, is it?

What about the bridge to knowhere and the jet sold on ebay for a profit

  • Posted By: true_patriot @ 09/09/2008 11:25:03 PM

It doesn't matter if these things are true or not. All we need to know is that McCain/Palin is just like Bush/Cheney. All we need to know is that we don't want four more years of misery. All we need to know is that NO Repulican, including and perhaps especially McCain/Palin has not earned the right for four more years.

So let's get back to the issues of deficits, long-term energy, affordable healthcare, quality education, etc. -- and let's get our economy back on track starting with an end to the war in Iraq. "Drop McCain Not Bombs"

    • Posted By: AnyoneButTheCommie @ 09/09/2008 11:32:35 PM

I believe you when you say you have been in misery that last 4 years. I think that's when the Dems lost their last election. Unfortunately, it's going to be at least 4 more years of misery for you. You shouldn't have selected a dolt for a candidate. I wonder if Hillary would be getting the treatment that Palin is getting? And I don't recall Ferraro getting raked like this when she ran as VP. My bad, those are/were Dems.

      • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/10/2008 12:02:42 AM

Isn't it funny. The republicans have been spreading lies since Reagan was elected. Their lies are always believed by their adoring fans. Now some truth comes out via the grapevine and they are crying foul. What a bunch of loser hypocrites!

    • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/10/2008 12:01:04 AM

All politicians lie ... its our responsibility to discern truth from fact and not believe everything we read and hear.

  • Posted By: jminich @ 09/09/2008 3:33:03 PM

In all your effort to be strictly 'factual', you're spinning the truth around most of these accusations. Testing someone's loyalty is another way of making it clear to someone subordinate to you that they better agree with you or else. The 'facts' are that the librarian didn't agree to a hypothetical request about removing books Mayor Palin said might need removing, and the librarian was subsequently fired. Dance around the definition of censorship or book banning all you like, but what Palin did was to try and enable censorship, period and end of discussion. Whatever you think of Gov. Palin's views on creationism, holy wars, global warming, and her right to fire people who disagree with her wishes---she has a highly authoritarian and singleminded approach to exercising executive power. Just what we need waiting in the wings to take over the Presidency: Another head-strong, righteous Republican with all the answers for the rest of us.

CNN Just had a story on Factcheck and what the facts are between who offers more change from the Bush 8 years that have made this country the mess that it is. When they took all the plans of Barack/Biden vs McCain/Palin. McCain /Plains policy do not differ from Bush /Cheny at all. So let's see insanity is when you do the same thing everyday and hope for a different result. Come on people this is exactly what the GOP wants blind them with the small stuff and they won't notice the big screw ups. When are the people of this country going to say "ENOUGH". Who cares if she tried to Ban books I am tired of living pay check to pay check. I am tired of other countries getting our jobs I am tired of sending our sons and daughters to die for oil. Please do not say it had anything to do with 9?11 that we all know is a lie. I SAY ENOUGH We need to retake our country..

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/09/2008 11:58:03 PM

I suggest you view the Factcheck report more carefully. The report states that McCain has some similar policy positions as Bush ( not all). Fact Check also says that Obama's economic plan will not work according to non-partisan economists and scholars, and that he has voted along party lines 97% of the time. Not exactly a monument to competence. Anybody could be a Senator if all you have to do is vote whatever your party tells you to vote.

Republican's have been hollering about the left wing liberals in the media forever already. Where's the evidence that the media has a liberal bias? Quite a lot of the American public are Democrats and Independents -- we have not seen our viewpoint presented in the traditional media for quite some time. And look at all the posts here, from who really, stating that liberals/democrats/obama/the left/ even your magazine, aren't Real Americans? Seriously? Who is benefiting from the constant drumbeat of liberal media bias anyway? And who is beating the drum? It is very nice, and important , to counter rumors. But, no similar effort has been undertaken for the Democratic nominees. There are extreme dangers when countries veer too far to the right, it would be handy to avoid them.

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/09/2008 11:51:08 PM

You can't be serious. There is simply so much evidence of it that you, the benefactor of this bias, must be either blind or unwilling to see it. You believe what the media is reporting as simple fact and do not have any cause to object to it. Lemming.....

THE DEMOCRATS ARE THE PARTY OF TAX, TAX, TAX AND TAX SOME MORE. BUT DON'T USE THE MONEY FOR ANYTHING BUT GIVE IT TO THOSE WHO AREN'T WILLING TO WORK FOR IT. JEREMIAH WRIGHT ENDORSES THE IDEA OF MAKING THE POOR RICH BY STEALING FROM THOSE WHO WORK HARD AND THAT INCLUDES BLACKS WHO HAVE SUCCEEDED, GOTTEN AN EDUCATION, WORKED HARD AND YES, PULLED THEMSELVES UP BY THEIR BOOTSTRAPS. BUT HE WON'T HOLD THEM UP AS ROLE MODELS, HE REFERS TO THEM AS UNCLE TOMS. IN ORDER FOR SOMEONE LIKE WRIGHT TO SUCCEED HE HAS TO HAVE FOLLOWERS WHO ARE POOR AND ANGRY. A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER IS ONE WHO WORKS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND KEEPS PEOPLE RILED UP AND CONSTANTLY REMINDS THEM HOW THEY ARE SO DESERVING AND SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WORK FOR IT, BUT IT SHOULD JUST BE GIVEN TO THEM. IT WORKED FOR THE BOLSHEVIKS IN RUSSIA, LEARN YOUR HISTORY.

Someday you may be in need of a helping hand. Remember that. Some of the rich deserve their riches because they worked hard, others simply inherited it. Some of the poor are poor because they don't have ambition and others because they lack opportunities. Many republicans want to scale back those areas that provide the most opportunities for going up the economic ladder. Education for example. I work in higher ed and every year there are fewer grants, fewer loans and fewer opportunities for middle and lower middle class families. The rich just write a check. The rich should remember "to much that is given, much is expected". Someday we will all be held accountable for what we were given.

I admire the softer tone of your post as contrasted to many of the others here. Thanks for not raising your voice. However I disagree with one of your points. I personally have secured many millions of dollars worth of educational grants on behalf of school districts and universities nationwide which were made possible within the last eight years. There is no shortage of education grants, and in particular, no shortage of grants aimed at the under-priveleged.

Please fact check your fact check. You state

'Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska's schools. She has said that students should be allowed to "debate both sides" of the evolution question, but she also said creationism "doesn't have to be part of the curriculum."'

How is asking that "both" sides of the issues--thereby asserting that creationism *is* a side not advocating creationism? Evolution is the most verified of all scientific theories, and creationism is not even a theory.

Why is it that fact checkers fail to understand this simple matter?

    • Posted By: RavenMaven @ 09/09/2008 11:30:46 PM

There absolutely is two sides to the issue. To dismiss one based solely on your egotistical notion that you think the other is right is a fools folly. This question is definitely "above your pay grade"! Evolution is a theory. It is not verified. It is not verifiable. It can not be proven, and never has been proven. The concept of evolution as nature's ( God's) mechanism for adapting its creatures toward the maturing of the planet is a fine and plausible notion. But we are talking about the source of the earth itself here. Big bang versus intelligent design. No way the Big Bang explains the astonishing difference between Earth with all of its wonders and miraculous inhabitants and the rest of the planets just being dust and rocks.

Let's sum up some of Palin's responsibilities.2003 budget $7.39 billion. http://www.city-data.com/states/Alaska-Public-finance.html That's not chump change.

Commander in chief of the Army and Air national guard. Not the most time consuming but also not just a figurehead position. "As governor, Palin oversees military units whose duties include serving overseas, search-and-rescue missions across the state's vast landscape and manning key elements of the U.S. missile defense system at Ft. Greely." and "The Alaska Air National Guard, with 1,946 service members, is involved in an exceptional number of search-and-rescue missions. Since Palin became governor in December 2006, the Air Guard has flown 521 missions, saving 200 lives and assisting with the rescue of 77 more people, said Kalei Brooks, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs." http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-guard6-2008sep06,0,4238012.story
Alaska, with a land area one-fifth the size of the conterminous US, ranked 47th in population in 2002 with an estimated total of 643,786, an increase of 2.7% since 2000. Between 1990 and 2000, Alaska's population grew from 550,043 to 626,932, or 14%. http://www.city-data.com/states/Alaska-Population.html Approximately 25,000 state employees are her responsibility. http://laborstats.alaska.gov/?PAGEID=67&SUBID=185

Turned mayoral work over to a subordinate. I don't know how to verify or disprove her statement. "precipitous firings", Steep firings? Abrupt? No idea what she means. "recall campaign", again no details here but the city council considered it but DID NOT pursue a recall. The recall was supposedly over the firing of the police chief. He was fired, filed a federal lawsuit, and the lawsuit was dismissed.

    • Posted By: Timesuprepubs @ 09/09/2008 11:01:43 PM

Heads up, Governors do not oversee any National Guard Duties oversees. Where do you get your information. That falls under the Pentagon and acting Generals like Petraus. Palin has NOTHING to do with any National Security or oversees or nay missle defense system. Man the BS is flying out the conservatives mouths.!

    • Posted By: mageduley @ 09/09/2008 9:18:49 PM

Campbell Brown asks McCain campaign to give just 1 example of a decision she made as national guard. He could not because she had not made ANY DECISIONS. She does not equip the national guard, those decisions are made by the pentagon.

The day after her nomination was announced McCain sent a small army of lawyers up to Alaska to do damage control and many people's story changed; what is with that? The general of the Alaska National Guard refuted the claims that she made any commander in chief type decisions for many days until he changed his tune on FOX News on Friday and today he was promoted by Palin!!! What the ????

A similar thing happened with AIP. While true that she was never a registered AIP voter that may not have anything to do with party membership. I'm a registered Dem but I'm not a Dem party member. I think the reverse could be true too. Beyond that though is whether or not she attended the AIP convention in 1996. The AIP was saying she did until the McCain people arrived. Did they do it with threats or with treats?

We don't need any lies to defeat Sarah Palin; the truth is bad enough. She is a very likable personality but her thin record shows questionable alliances, abuse of power, flip-flops, and LIES!

Umm yo stupid.....there is a problem with seceding from the union...it is called treason. That is why Abraham Lincoln kept our country together.

Yeah, but Abraham Lincoln only had a 8th grade education ... what did he know? (that's sarcasm, btw, but also goes to critics of Palin's education)

          • Posted By: Pupster @ 09/09/2008 9:51:45 PM

Lincoln was a lawyer for many years in a time when formal education wasn't available on the frontier. What's Palin's excuse?

She barely finished community college, her husband dropped out and her oldest daughter and her fiance dropped out of high school. Great example. And she's gonna make education policy? Really, Repubs, was she the best you could do? A barely educated beauty queen who doesn't believe in evolution.

They matter if she wants to demand that every other family in this coiuntry follows the same rules as her family. Lead by example. Now she has to go back and support funding and housing for teenage mothers. Oh wait, she doesen't. She can just claim more per diem for her daugher. Maybe she'll even rehire that cook she never actually fired too.

Damn republicans. The'll fight for the rights of the unborn, but they sure as hell don't give a damn about them once they're born. Not their problem anymore. That person shouldn't have gotten into that situation in the first place. Maybe if they had better parents, you know, like Sarah Palin. Oh wait. I mean, like... uh...

Sorry, pupster, you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wrong. U of Idaho is a state university, located in Moscow, Idaho. It offers a variety of bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees. How do I know? I have a master's from there. So, do your homework prior to posting. Thanks

Exactly. A state sponsored institution with practically no entrance requirements. A 4 year college instead of 2 year, which is the only difference.

I'm sorry you're degree is from there. I take it you are not a scholar or professor anywhere. No reputable place would accept it.

The difference is that he ran in a primary in which the voters were able to judge for themselves. She just got chosen by McCranky because he's old, frail and no one paid any attention to him.

Your figures are wrong. he voted with bush ( and other republicans) 89.3% of the time. Obama voted along democratic party lines 97% of the time. What this means is Obama is less likely to work across party lines than McCain is according to their record in the Senate. It also means Obama is less likely to do what he thinks is right if that conflicts with his party's doctrine.

        • Posted By: Ezana @ 09/09/2008 7:23:13 PM

There have been some nasty rumors circulating on the internet about whether baby Trig is Sarah's or her daughter Bristol's. Can you do a fact check on that? Sarah said she waited several hours to give a speech at a conference in Texas then boarded a plane after her water broke and flew for 8 hrs while in labor with a Down's Syndrome preemie. The flight crew said they didn't notice anything unusual about her. She also said she gave birth to him on Friday April 18 and returned to work on Monday, April 21, a total of 3 days of maternity leave. Interestingly enough, baby Trig's name is not on the hospital's website on the newborn nursery calendar, which lists the names of all babies born there by date. I'm sure it was an innocent mistake. Contemporaneously, 16 year old Bristol stopped attending school in the 3rd trimester of this pregnancy, because she had mononucleosis, a debilitating illness. In spite of this, she is said to have been ticketed for causing an auto accident while out sick with this debilitating disease. She's also 5 months pregnant, which means not only was she driving around town with a debilitating medical condition that left her unable to attend school, but she was also having unprotected sex while suffering from this illness. It's all so confusing. The best way to clear this up is for Sarah to release her medical record with notations signed by doctors and nurses documenting her pregnancy, her prenatal visits, as well as the labor, birth, and post partum follow up visits for her and the baby. Also, it would be helpful to get the medical record for Bristol showing that she was diagnosed with mononucleosis. This would put all those nasty rumors to rest. Thanks in advance.

    Factcheck-get all your details please!
Anne Killkenny was interviewed by NPR's All things Considered and her story was confirmed.
Sara Palin -has-for whatever reason tried to use her power against people who don't agree with her.
It can be confirmed that she inherited a town with NO debt and left it with a 22million deficit.
You glossed over this story completely with the "we're looking into it" bull, it's the most damning stuff too-she's seems to abuses her power and she's a poor manager.
If NPR can get it right maybe you chuckleheads can too.
PLUS all the actual LIES she's telling about the bridge to nowhere- or are you just "factchecking" not really checking the facts.
do your job a little better please.
