Look at our country today and compare to 8 years ago. Look at the economy, the defecit, unemployment, health care... Look at our standing in the world, the weapons of mass destruction that weren't there, our neglect of the actually justified war in Afganistan. Look at the neglect of our wounded soldeirs and the cutting of their benefits. Look at the multitude of cover ups - Valerie Plane, the fired justices, the build up to the war. Look at the damage to our moral standing and the values we hold dear... look Guantanimo and captives held for years without ever being charged with anything, Abu Graib, secret torture camps of the CIA.... Why are there people supporting 4 more years of this? I am sadly unable to have children, but if I did, I would be so scared of the world I would be leaving them if this continues.

Step back two years. The housing market was strong. Unemployment was at an all-time low. What has happened since then to change all that. hhhmmm? Let me think a moment.................................................................................. Oh, yeah. The dems took control of Congress. Coincident. I think not.

    • Posted By: RightStuff @ 09/09/2008 2:00:51 PM

You are going from micro to macro. Typical leftist tactic. You find one person having a hard time, and you project that to the universe. I've doing just fine in this "horrible" economy. Of course, I've made the correct decisions. I didn't by a house expecting to flip it in a rapidly appreciating realestate market. I can find some poor miserable soul within five minutes, if I tried, but I can't use him/her as an example of how "horrible" the economy. Stop whining!!!!

      • Posted By: eagle35 @ 09/09/2008 2:18:38 PM

You are right. They show us 5% who took out loans they could not afford, I can show you 95% who pay their mortgages. Most problems are due to personal choices. What most leftists do is try to find someone to blame for their poor choices. Obama is an excellent example of what this country offers every citizen. I do not agree with him, but I do not think he spent his life blaming others everytime he made a poor choice. You Obama supporters need to stop whining and do not look for the government to make your life better. If you think Obama will wave a magic wand and make your life better you are sadly mistaken or delusional.

tell us News week.... What about the hateful lies about Senator Obama??? Are you going to talk about them too???

    • Posted By: eagle35 @ 09/09/2008 2:25:53 PM

Name a few of those lies!! The press did not ask him any questions about Ayers, Wright, Resko, drug use. I don't know the detailed answers to any of these relationships. If the subject was ever brought up Obama cried Racism and polictics as usual. Isn't what they are doing to Palin politics as usual?

Let's just use drug use for an example. Can you tell me the last time Obama used cocaine? Can you tell me if he is currently addicted to any drugs? He is addicted to nicotine so don't we have the "right" to know if he is addicted to anything else. If you know please enlighten us with the source other than Obama denials. This vetting stuff goes two ways.

      • Posted By: wildlifeusa @ 09/09/2008 2:35:13 PM

What about Bush's drinking record?? We all know he is a drunk, because he can't put 2 sentences together!! Obama experienced drugs when he was 18, like so many have did!!! You people will get the president you deserve and you know what, I don't care, I will have left this country and won't have to pay for your debts!! Good luck!

    • Posted By: Shannon in FL @ 09/09/2008 2:30:37 PM

I agree!!! Where are all the 'advocates for TRUTH' when it comes to Obama? Why is there no big Newsweek article shooting down one myth after another for the other candidate, incidentally, the ONLY one to publicly defend this woman when the crap hit the fan in the first week.

Also, I agree with several other posters saying they've skewed the "sliming", only outing those issues they could show were incorrect, without listing the other 'rumors' that are proving to be true.

It never seemed reasonable that Gov. Paylin would cut back on funds for disabled children, because of her own situation. However, I thought she had cut back on funds in the program to assist unwed mothers?

Also remember: "Jesus was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate was a Governor".

    • Posted By: somebunny @ 09/09/2008 9:23:16 AM

Jesus was not a community organizer. He is God.

      • Posted By: j_ashus @ 09/09/2008 2:33:38 PM

Jesus is not God, He is God's son..............

      • Posted By: KeriTail @ 09/09/2008 9:49:42 AM

        But Churches are community organizers.

Individuals don't have the resources nor the time to check on the barrage of "facts" with which we are bombarded. that is what we hope responsible journalists can provide. Your site bookmarked. According to The Book of Revelations:

The Anti-Christ will be a man, in his 40s, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal....the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, he will destroy everything.

    • Posted By: Scottie @ 09/09/2008 2:29:41 PM

Let's just remember that Pope Benedict (someone that should be more qualified to recognize the antichrist than you) worried before a meeting with George W. Bush that he might be the antichrist . Scott

    • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/09/2008 1:47:10 PM

The U.S. (i.e. this part of the world) is not mentioned in the Book of Revelation (I can only presume this country will have been taken out at some point prior - at any rate, the U.S. is not involved in Armageddon, we I guess we will no longer be a super power at that point). Most scholars and theologians believe, based upon study and research, that the Anti-Christ will come from the EU. Please don't attempt to imply that Obama is the Anti-Christ ... you do the Republican party, and actually everyone U.S. citizen, a grave disservice.

      • Posted By: RightStuff @ 09/09/2008 2:03:33 PM

Yup, that might be a stretch. A number of us thought that Bill Clinton might have been the anti-christ. Clinton was horrible, but only a pervert.

        • Posted By: wildlifeusa @ 09/09/2008 2:26:13 PM

A pervert??? Haahahaa.. now you wonder why you are the laughing stock of the world???
You have a president who fooled around and you have one who has destroyed and caused terror to millions of people?? and you still defend the one who has killed and destroyed??? You really have a twisted brain!

    • Posted By: willnotvoteobama @ 09/09/2008 1:50:08 PM

sorry pal thats not what the book of revelation says! the anti christ will be from europe and he will fool the masses but please don't give obama that kind of credit they already think he's the messiah..... the big factor if your looking for the anti christ is that he will be wounded in the head and all will think that he has died but will make a full recovery! and when the anti christ does come its a little too late for any thing to be done ! so just relax a bit and do a little checking and you will find out ask your pastor and if you don't have one get one ! but if he tells you your right get a different one and refer him to one !

      • Posted By: gig'em99 @ 09/09/2008 2:05:19 PM

Thank you! It is not plural...that is one of my pet peeves :-)

    • Posted By: Iwant2BaVP @ 09/09/2008 1:53:34 PM

This is what is really embarrassing about our country. We allow people like this to vote.

    • Posted By: wolfman6 @ 09/09/2008 1:52:33 PM

Oh, please, the Anti-Christ is already here and his name is GEORGE W. BUSH!!!

    • Posted By: willnotvoteobama @ 09/09/2008 1:51:05 PM

p.s. the book of revelation is singular not plural

  • Posted By: milpool @ 09/09/2008 2:18:48 PM

Hmmm...interesting. The idea is to focus on what is untrue and cry foul regarding the accusations, but completely ignore the substantiated accusations. Ignorance is truly bliss.

The crime rate is higher in Chicago? True, but the forcible rape rate, property crime, and robbery rates are higher in Alaska, but don't let the facts get in the way of you making your argument.

Like being for something before being against it? Like supporting Ted Stevens "Bridge to Nowhere" project and then claiming that you were the one who shut it down?

The reason you want the personal attacks to continue is to avoid talking about any topic that will reveal Sarah Palin to be exactly what she is: UNQUALIFIED!!!

    • Posted By: Thea @ 09/09/2008 2:29:07 PM

The GOP has always run their campaigns on personal attacks. Look at the people who vote Republican they are usually fear-based bullies who attack those who are different and they attack what they know nothing about but are to proud and too stupid to learn.

  • Posted By: wildlifeusa @ 09/09/2008 2:19:25 PM

Tell us newsweek... Are you going to denounced all the hateful lies about Senator Obama??

    • Posted By: Jack Kennedy @ 09/09/2008 2:27:42 PM

      What lies?

    • Posted By: DonRoch @ 09/09/2008 2:23:58 PM

Do some research on your own. Go to wilkipedia and search Rashid Khalidi for some light reading. Facts, not rumors, or you can try http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=25166 and then research the FACTS presented there.

  • Posted By: bfjones666 @ 09/09/2008 2:26:40 PM

This is the epitome of bias. Psychologists have stated again and again that in order to refute a lie, you DO NOT mention the lie first and then the truth, which is what the media has done over and over again when the talk about the Obama rumors. Yet, here we see ONLY the rebuttal with no mention of the original rumor. that's how the media is playing this one folks.

  • Posted By: emm0427 @ 09/09/2008 2:24:52 PM

Thank you Newsweek for putting to rest these false rumors about a great woman. Sarah Palin will make an excellent Vice President and as a woman, I am proud of her accomplishments and the true reform she brought to Alaska. I look forward to voting for Sarah Palin on November 4th!

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/25/us/25jet.html

The jet sale was reported in the NY Times at the time of sale. It sold for $2.1M at a loss, Frank Murkowski had paid $2.7M for it. There was no profit made in the sale at all, McCain is spinning.

    • Posted By: Slee @ 09/09/2008 2:22:11 PM

Obviously not many here knows about accounting. There is a book value on the jet which is depreciation from original cost. If the jet is sold higher than book value, there is a profit then. If sold below BV there is a loss. These has to be ascertained before slamming John Mc Cain on his profit statement

  • Posted By: dmorris@cebridge.net @ 09/09/2008 2:21:07 PM

Kudos to Newsweek! I know that they are a left-leaning magazine, but it's nice to have opponents with some intellectual honesty. We need more of this in all media.

  • Posted By: MartiM @ 09/09/2008 2:03:01 PM

Why would Palin ask about banning books? Why did Palin do a "loyalty purge?" Did Palin request an increase in special needs funding because she knew about the baby's Downs syndrome? Would she have requested it otherwise?

  • Posted By: JJ4770 @ 09/09/2008 1:59:12 PM

Bill Clinton had to defend himself from much the same type of attacks during his run for the Presidency in 1992. Bush Sr., was desperately trying to blunt the popular appeal of an outsider to the Beltway much the same as the Dems are anxious about the populist appeal of Palin. Bush Sr., was unsuccessful in raising concerns about Clintion's inexperience, much the same way that McCain's contention that Obama is inexperienced, and ironically Obama's claim that Palin is inexperienced, have failed. Now it appears that the attack on Palin is that she is not the effective executive that she claims despite the 80% approval rating of her constituents. It would seem that this is a treacherous path for Dems as well as the legislative choices (or non-choices) lf Obama and Biden will certainly come into play during the debates. The last senator elected as President with no executive experience was J.F.K. Now I am sure there are Obamaniacs who believe that he is J.F.K. reincarnate, but I think that is due to fact that the jobs are so different and that it is often difficult in hindsight to defend your voting record.

    • Posted By: gig'em99 @ 09/09/2008 2:19:47 PM

Dems ALWAYS self destruct...this one is going to be really fun! I keep thinking they will learn, but no, same stuff every time. I think people will actually leave the country this time like they "threatened" to with the Bush re-election.

  • Posted By: DonRoch @ 09/09/2008 2:19:22 PM

Thanks for taking the time to present the facts about the Sarah Palin rumors. The MSM is out of control and knowingly presenting lies and misrepresentations. Hats off to Newsweek.

  • Posted By: tomilvento @ 09/09/2008 2:19:20 PM

I welcome all fact-checking. But your story was decidedly one side and on one count, extremely generous. One the one-side part, you only listed items you could refute. Aren't there stories circulating that are true? By only refuting you give the impression that all stories about Palin are false. On the generous side, you state that the Librarian was questioned in public, then asked for her resignation, then fired, and then rehired. Isn't that a form of intimidation? And in terms of the Independence Party, she did give a video-taped speech at their convention. Short of Joe Lieberman, anyone talking at the party of a rival would be unusual. Did she also speak at the Democratic convention in Alaska?

  • Posted By: DonRoch @ 09/09/2008 2:16:07 PM

Thanks for taking the time to present the facts on Sarah Palin. What fear she has created in the Democratic Party.

  • Posted By: white trash @ 09/09/2008 1:21:42 PM

All of this info is irrelevant as Mac & Pal are on a fast track to the white house. It is built into the system because the average IQ's in this nation, best represented by the preceding two, are this nation's societal voice and worldview majority. After all, the bulk of Americans is represented by average minds, the least conscious and the most brainwashed.

Mac & Pal could have done anything, and the societal voice will twist and turn it, so it sounds so American and so good. So holy. The brainwashing voices took a medal winning war hero and turned him into a cowardly, whatever and took a veritable, draft dodger coward into the least popular president in history. It's in the bag.

    • Posted By: gig'em99 @ 09/09/2008 1:31:45 PM

and yet we are the greatest nation on God's green earth...does it ever feel dirty to be such an America hater? I can tell you...it feels really good to love my country and my God. Funny thing is none of you wackos could make me feel bad; no matter who's in charge.

      • Posted By: cdld7e @ 09/09/2008 2:15:04 PM

So you are proud of the fact that we are a nation of morons and are likely to elect another moron and those of us who are not proud of that hate America. Wow.

    • Posted By: Thea @ 09/09/2008 1:23:57 PM

      I hope you are wrong.

      • Posted By: wolfman6 @ 09/09/2008 1:31:10 PM

You hit it on the nail, White Trash! Americans are dumb and gullible and will believe anything. No wonder other countries are beating us in math & science. We're supposed to be in the 21st Century, but I feel like we've regressed back to the 19th!

        • Posted By: gig'em99 @ 09/09/2008 1:37:36 PM

Do you ever stop to think that maybe you are the one who is "dumb and gullible"? Why all of the insults? Is it despiration?

          • Posted By: gig'em99 @ 09/09/2008 1:39:46 PM

Desperation...yes I know how to spell.

            • Posted By: wolfman6 @ 09/09/2008 2:05:28 PM

No, it's not disperation, Mr. Spell check. It's the truth. The American public is dumb and gullible. The media knows it and the politicians know it. They've been controlling us for years and we are dumb enough to let them do it.

      • Posted By: FightForFreedom @ 09/09/2008 1:38:00 PM

unfortunately, it would appear he is right. the stupidest people in the country get the most press time and are therefor heard more often, combine that with the fact that our population seems overwhelmingly unable to think for themselves and it's not hard to see that the republicans have already bought this one (along with the last two). Who has ever heard of a "super delegate" before this year? Just another way for them to say "see, it was the people who decided" after they rig the results.

  • Posted By: shianne55555 @ 09/09/2008 1:34:20 PM

Did you make this effort for Barack with ALL of the ridiculous false claims against him? Disgusting biased media.

    • Posted By: RightStuff @ 09/09/2008 2:14:30 PM

The leftist media is covering up the truth about Obama. Trouble is, there are enought Kool-Aid drinkers out there that when they hear the truth about Obama, they reject it.

  • Posted By: Keith in PA @ 09/09/2008 1:52:05 PM

Sarah Palin grew up in the Pentacostal church where they speak in tongues. She thinks abortion is wrong even if there's rape or incest. She charged 321 days at home to the taxpayers. She "hasn't thought" about the Iraq war. She was for the "bridge to nowhere" before she was against. She is lying about selling a plane on eBay. She supports the corrupt Senator Stevens of Alaska and she even served on his 527 group. She think being Governor is "cool" and admits she doesn't know what a VP does. She sought vengance against her former brother-in-law and abused her office. She attended 6 colleges in 6 years and hasn't explained her reason. She won't answer questions from the press. She flies on a plane known as the "no talk express".

    • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/09/2008 2:14:27 PM

Obama voted FOR the Bridge to Nowhere ... twice. Her cop x-BIL tasered his stepson and has not business being a cop. What's wrong with growing up in the Pentacostal Church? Don't forget where Obama received his early education. Further, she will be answering questions from the press ... ABC will be spending two days with her for interviews this week with no restrictions. Please know what your talking about if you're going to bother posting.

    • Posted By: gig'em99 @ 09/09/2008 2:02:05 PM

Do you really want her out there talking? Seems like when she gets out there she build tons of support. Enjoy it while you can. You do know she is out there campaigning, right? Don't worry. She will do some shows at the end of the week and then will go on to wipe the floor with Biden in the debates. Again, enjoy it while you can.

Thank you for checking these things out. Since the advent of the internet and especially with the proliferation of blogging, false claims and rumors run unchecked and rampant and have been reported as news by major networks and news agencies too lazy to check the facts. I appreciate your diligence and determination to hold the light of truth up to ugly rumors.
