What I find so incredible is that in the last election Factcheck.org was referenced by myself and so many people in retaliation to the Bush Campaign claims and smears against Kerry. Every time we referred to Factcheck.org some Republican would call us bleeding heart liberals, insult our heritage, question our patriotism and state how they weren't going to read our liberal rags like Factcheck.org. Now I see below so many Republicans hailing Factcheck.org and referencing them as the end-all be-all. How the tables have turned! You're eating your venomous words and you don't even realize it.

At their core, the virulent attacks on Kerry were based on hard truth and sown by Kerry's own cynical actions directed at first gaining elected office in Massachusetts.

Thank you for clarifying the air. I'm still voting for Obama, though I don't buy half the internet rumors on the web about either parties. News like this helps me to believe in fair media.

I agree. There are some pretty horrible photos floating round of SPas well, which I assume to be false.

What do you expect from the left wing idiots? And to make matters even worse is CNN and MSNBC's repeating these untruths as if they are a major scoop. No wonder there is a backlash

I applaud Newsweek for taking the time to verify claims posted on this blog. There's nothing like the bright light of day to send bloggers with an agenda running for cover. Keep up the good work.

What you're witnessing is the last desperate acts of slander from a Party that has elevated an unqualified candidate for the job of president. Obama hasn't the skills to be President and the only retort is false claims of his opponents. Somewhere in Chicago there's a community that needs organizing.

    • Posted By: KeriTail @ 09/09/2008 10:05:48 AM

Or you're seeing people on the internet research an unknown person who has been elevated to a position of potential authority and coming up with a lot of stuff that they may not know is true or not. This is why it needs to be addressed and clarified. I'm no democrat but I still fail to see how she's fiscally conservative.

Compared to McCain in 2000 Bush was unqualified and didn't have the skills to be President but he was elected twice. I voted for McCain then but I'm not sure I will this time because of the change I've seen in him since then. I may vote Bob Barr.

Newsweek is leaving out a big part of the story. While lies and innuendos about Obama (his religion, his citizenship, flags at the Democratic convention, his friendships) are reported by major information outlets like Fox and Rush Limbaugh, the stories about Palin rarely leave the blogosphere and when they do, they're short lived.

    • Posted By: Giggs5 @ 09/09/2008 9:59:37 AM

By Fox, I assume you mean Hannity (not Colms<sp?>) or O'Reilly, they are not journalists/anchorman. The are commentators who offer opinions. Same with Limbaugh. May you should listen to Al Franken or Garrafalo on Air American...oh wait...never mind! You libs don't support YOUR media outlets, yet would deny conservatives commentary outlets. I agree on the religion thing w/Obama..uncalled for...questions regarding his circle of friends is totally justified. Rev Wright is a racist, Ayers is a terrorist, Rezko is a slumlord who enabled Obama to get his sweet house!

Perhaps Palin's stories not having a long life after they leave the blogsphere is that they are shot down for the false rumors that they are.....Grandma Palin anyone???

"Actually, true rhetorical questions have implied answers, so Palin probably meant to describe her questions as hypothetical or theoretical."

Thanks for the vocabulary lesson. But there WAS an implied answer. That answer was "No. I won't ban books." Why would you infer otherwise into Ms. Palin's intended meaning? She said it was rhetorical. She meant it was rhetorical.

Just write the story. Leave the opinions for the Editorial page.

Her handlers are saying that she doesn't need to go through the media, she can go right to the American people. The newspapers are the only ones who will ask hr the tough questions. Giving the same exact speech over and over and over is not helping. She also lies over and over. She did NOT SELL A PLANE ON EBAY. That "chef" she claimed to fire is still cooking for her, she just changed her title to "co-ordinator" so she could make that claim in the speech. Wake up America. Just any woman isn't what we want. IF a stupid woman gets into the White House it will be worse than having no woman at all.

    • Posted By: Giggs5 @ 09/09/2008 9:47:45 AM

She said she PUT the former Governors' plane on EBay, it did sell eventually, just not on Ebay. I think it was sold to acquaintences, not sure, but I think it is now used for hunting parties. I don't see anything wrong with what she did. Prove that she rehired the chef under a strictly different title. IF, and I mean IF the chef was rehired as a Coordinator, I would make the guess that it would be under an Event Planner/Special Functions type position. But I am only guessing at that, but it would make sense and be appropriate for the Governor of a state. Again, you offered no proof on this, so...hey, I heard that Bill Clinton didn't have enough experience, since he had only been a governor..and the state was Arkansas! Plus he was having an affair! See how this can work both ways!

As a parent of a child with special needs.

I wonder when mainstream press is going to cover how both Clintons at the DNC in Denver spoke of autism, and at the RNC, both McCain and Palin mentioned autism and downs syndrome respectiviely...

Why Obama and Biden said nada, zil, zippo, zero on special needs.

Would it have to do with the 3 Class Action Lawsuits on behalf of people with physical, developmental and mental disabilities who are residing in nursing homes and the many institiutions in Illinois.

How can a civil rights lawyer, a Harvard Law Review editor, a community organizer, a tenured state senator and a U.S. Senator disreqard the Constitutional Amendment called Title II/Americans with Disability Act.

    Palin is behind "education"

    and

Obama is for "institutionalization and nursring homes" of which the 3 class actions suits show.

The class-action lawsuit charges that wharehousing persons with disabilities in nursing homes segregates them from their own communities and deprives them of economic, social, and educational opportunities, as well as their privacy and dignity.

I have been no fan of Newsweek, but I do appreciate a seemingly legitimate attempt to
research and answer these questions sincerely and truthfully. Thank you. I hope others will follow suit. How refereshing it could be to see media reporting true news and carefully researched and substantiated facts rather then being the first to report the latest gossip in with their reckless abandonment of facts. If the press could keep the facts straight, we could decide. I understand ALaska now has the checkbook "open" available for the state to view government spending. I would welcome the United States government open the same way. And I think it would be great to see a list of legislation that both candidates sponsored and voted for - not the latest spin by someone on the left or right. Our news sources have generally become a joke that is patheticl viewing - and certainly not funny.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Blah, blah, blah. You'd think this woman came straight out of American Idol the way everyone has gone ga-ga over her and will do anything to defend her.

Whether a book is in print or not is irrelevant--libraries are full of out of print books. When a book is banned from the library it is pulled from the shelves and removed or discarded.

    • Posted By: Liquidity @ 09/09/2008 9:36:12 AM

I can only assume that you totally missed the fact that books on the list HAD NOT EVEN BEEN PUBLISHED AT THE TIME IT WAS CLAIMED PALIN WANTED TO BAN THEM, making the actions claimed of Palin a logical impossibility. And, I suppose I should state what most would consider obvious: "Out of print" DOES NOT MEAN THE SAME THING AS "Unpublished."

Palin would not have this problem if she would talk to the media. Why is it ok for Palin to avoid the media? If elected, she would be a heartbeat away from the presidency. The media has a responsibility to ask the hard questions. The media seem more interested in having a close election and a sexy story. Whether you support Obama or not he has been vetted by Democratic party (18 million votes) and the media. He has sat down with every major news source and asked every question. The media held him accountable. They made sure we the public knew everything. It is crazy to think that this person could skate through with no real questioning! This election coverage is turning into a joke!!!

    • Posted By: DoJo64 @ 09/09/2008 9:35:12 AM

It is not that the media is behind Him, the Chosen One, they were behind all of David Axelrod's puppets. The last two guys that used Obama's Change slogans - word for word - Edwards for Pres. and Devel Patrick.
David Axelrod was in the media - why do you think they are helping him???

  • Posted By: bluegrass08 @ 09/09/2008 8:42:40 AM

These sorts of sayings like "Jesus was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate was a governor" are not helpful to a serious discussion of Gov. Palin nor of Sen. Obama. They simply are clever ways to cloud the discussion and throw people off track.

Comment: Guess it's the Republican's turn to deal with all the smears. Obama has been fighting these since the beginning and hasnt' whined about it. As for McCain and Palin they cry sexism everytime an issue is brought up. Palin should be held to the same standards as anyone running for VP.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not only are you dumb include idiot with it, as I remember he cried 'RACISM" about a thousand times. Geeze pete, get your head out of your A**.
