THis article is a JOKE!!! You focus on the things that can be debunked. What about all of the other lies - the bridge to nowhere and the selling the airplane on eBay. This is the most cynical attempt to justify a totally unqualified Republican since... George Bush. The media is complicit in perpetuating the myth of the maverick Palin and your article certainly is reflective of that. Anyone who would fall for this crap again is STUPID!

    • Posted By: lamppost @ 09/10/2008 12:28:56 PM

uh, let me guess you have never voted republican, just dem (you probably never even look at who is running just the D behing the name) what a joke we have all turned into.

      Obama = ZEROBAMA !!

(I forogt there were more qualified candidates - Hillary and Biden were BOTH defeated.)

So... she said creationism should be taught, then backed off.

She inquired repeatedly about banning books, fired the librarian who by all accounts strenuously resisted the idea, and there was at the time a local protest that characterized the issue as about censorship.

She gave a speech to the AIP, perhaps attended a meeting in 94, and her husband was a member for 7 years.

I'm not an expert on any of these stories, going just on what I read in this article. But although these facts slightly mitigate the claims as originally formulated, it seems like a lot to the substance of the accusations is quite well grounded in fact. She clearly supported the AIP, asked repeatedly about banning books and then fired a librarian who objected to the idea, and she said creationism should be taught in schools. Just because she later backed off from all of these positions, and just the facts don't exactly match the specific accusations you began the article with, does not mean the substance of these accusations is untrue. Your own reporting seems to confirm the fundamental facts.

You are absolutely correct! I have lived in the Mat-Su Valley, Alaska, home turf of Sarah Palin since 1986. I have watched the triumphs and failures of Ms. Palin, first hand. It amazes me, but the best "true" portrayal of her available so far online is an essay written by a well respected member of the Wasilla community, a woman who has known Sarah for many years. It is to be fact checked soon, according to the article. I have already been able to fact check the portions which were associated with television interviews/stories as they transpired. It's amazing to me, that a private citizen could offer the public a better view into the "real" Sarah Palin than any of the professional news reporters have been able to do thus far. Of course, with Ms. Palin locked away by the Republicans, and her hometown of Wasilla and the surrounding areas consisting of a large Evangelical base, I guess their silence should not surprise me. Her silence can be attributed to the reprogramming process she is currently under. Do you really think that should she become VP and something were to happen to Mr. McCain, that world leaders posed with an urgent situation would simply say, "Sure, we'll wait for Sarah to prepare?" Please, for the sake of our country, make an educated vote in November.

        Frustrated in Alaska -

After reading your rant, it seems evident that you would be frustrated wherever you chose to live.

Are you related to Anne Kilkenny, that other bitter democrat blogger who has posted false comments about Sarah Palin?

What happened - are you mad, possibly because you envy Sarah's having actually been accepted to participate in a beauty contest? Were you rejected?

Or would your catty attempt to denigrate Sarah be a result of her demonstrated ability to play basketball, to confront the PTA, to serve as Mayor and then Governor, whereas you may have lacked any real ability in any of those or other accomplishments?

It's quite a testimonial that Sarah Palin has achieved an 80% favourable rating as the Alaska Governor.

        Now that's one competent lady!

This is what comes from McCain choosing a a neophyte that nobody knows, not the press, not the public, not even all the Republican surrogates who are currently singing her praises yet have never even met her or spoken with her. Never before have the press had to start from scratch. And yet McCain has the nerve to say she can be ready on Day One. What a joke.

Thank you for your input. I know of the essay you speak of, and I've forwarded it to as many people as possible because it seemed as informative and well-balanced a portrayal as I've read. We need more honest Alaskan citizens to help us try to make sense of this debacle.

Her husband was an Alaskan Independence Party memeber until 2002 and she did speak at their convention she gave her suport in their cause. All you have to do is youtube it and you can see her speeck at the convention. She did fire the Librarian for not considering taking books off the shelf and the library is full of out of print books I know this because I live in here home town. Get your fact straight.

ANCHORAGE ??? Gov. Sarah Palin???s church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.

???You???ll be encouraged by the power of God???s love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality,??? according to the insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has worshipped for about six years.

Palin???s conservative Christian views have energized that part of the GOP electorate, which was lukewarm to John McCain???s candidacy before he named her as his vice presidential choice. She is staunchly anti-abortion, even in cases of rape and incest, and opposes gay marriage and spousal rights for gay couples.

Focus on the Family, a national Christian fundamentalist organization, is conducting the ???Love Won Out??? Conference in Anchorage, about 30 miles from Wasilla.

Palin, campaigning with McCain in the Midwest on Friday, has not publicly expressed a view on the so-called ???pray away the gay??? movement. Larry Kroon, senior pastor at Palin???s church, was not available to discuss the matter Friday, said a church worker who declined to give her name.

Gay activists in Alaska said Palin has not worked actively against their interests, but early in her administration she supported a bill to overrule a court decision to block state benefits for gay partners of public employees. At the time, less than one-half of 1 percent of state employees had applied for the benefits, which were ordered by a 2005 ruling by the Alaska Supreme Court.

Palin reversed her position and vetoed the bill after the state attorney general said it was unconstitutional. But her reluctant support didn???t win fans among Alaska???s gay population, said Scott Turner, a gay activist in Anchorage.

???Less than 1 percent of state employees would even apply for benefits, so why make a big deal out of such a small number???? he said.

???I think gay Republicans are going to run away??? if Palin supports efforts like the prayers to convert gays, said Wayne Besen, founder of the New York-based Truth Wins Out, a gay rights advocacy group.

    • Posted By: Cimarron @ 09/10/2008 11:48:46 AM

Now why would you think she has any control of what her church promotes?

      • Posted By: chindogu @ 09/10/2008 12:25:31 PM

Uh... once again, weren't folks all up in arms and laying it at Obama's doorset when Rev. Wright publicly went off the deep end? Wasn't Obama held responsible for his choice of congregation? So what you are saying is that Obama is responsible for his choices... Palin isn't responsible for hers.

But I guess that makes sense. After all, she's just a woman, and we can't expect women to be held accountable, right?

(And before somebody goes ballistic, yes, I'm a woman. It's called irony).

  • Posted By: chindogu @ 09/10/2008 12:18:06 PM

Uh... I have a question. Did Newsweek publish a piece like this when the Fox machine was e-mail lies & distortions about Mr. Obama? For example, did Newsweek go to the trouble of publicly debunking the "Obama is a Muslim" bit? The "Michelle is a terrorist" bit (or whatever that was... it was so weird I couldn't fathom it.) If so, great--i'd like to have the link to the article. If not... lets see some REAL objectivity, eh?

The news media has suddenly shifted from relatively balanced reporting to crawling all over Obama, and kissing all over McCain. Do we need to look into just what strings are being pulled here?

Who cares about anyone's religion? This is the United States of America, built on freedom of religion.

Our problem is our ECONOMY. We have virtually NO MANUFACTURING. We have an EXPORT/IMPORT Deficit. Our higher educational costs are exorbitant. Our medical costs are unbearable. Our transportation costs are outrageous. We can barely afford LIFE'S NECESSITIES: Shelter, food and clothing.

For the past 4 decades, our Congress and Presidents have been selling out the United States of America. Democratic neoliberals wrote laws and neoconservative Republicans signed them into law. Every law that outsourced our businesses has both their blood on them. Until we start getting fiscal conservative moderates of both parties (or just another strong third party) who really care about the people of this country (AND NOT WITH HANDOUTS), these EXTREME LEFTISTS AND RIGHTISTS will continue to destroy our country.

The EXTREME RIGHT is more for money and special interests and the EXTREME LEFT is more for money, power and special interests. The EXTREME LEFT environmentalists refuse to "take from the earth" to save the planet, so we cannot have manufacturing in our country and incentives are given for them to LEAVE our country. The EXTREME RIGHT wants the money to stay with the CEO's, so incentives are given for them to have CHEAP LABOR.

Biden's record for voting for manufacturing LEAVING our country is 100%. Pelosi's record for voting for manufacturing LEAVING our country is 100%. While the idea of promoting free trade is good, the problem was with the tax incentives given to companies to leave our country, including the World Wide Income - written by Democrats.

Americans have a right to ask questions about the positions and character of the person who will be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Asking questions is not the equivalent of sliming. McCain, Obama and Biden have been scrutinized for years. We know virtually nothing about Sarah Palin. Yes, technically Sarah Palin never registered as an AIP member, but she did attend at least one convention and as recently as six months ago she taped a message of support. This group is as far out on the fringe as I have seen. Their platform should disturb any American. There is no reason Governor Palin should not answer quedstions about her association with them. The American people deserve answers.

The main stream media has an obligation to return to competent responsible unbiased journalism.
They expected the pit-bull with lipstick to jump through their hoops.

But instead, she has challenged them to jump through her hoops.
And they're reluctantly and embarrassingly starting to do so!

Now that's a tribute to Sarah Palin's competence and determination!

What is wrong with you perple? McCain is cynically lying tro you just as the Republicans ALWAYS DO. How can you possibly be falling for this crap agan after the last 8 years? Our economy is a mess. Our military is so stretched that we cannot respond to woirld events. Our budget deficit is at record levels. We lost 85,000 jobs last month. Oil prices are through the roof and McCain has not said ONE WORD about solving these enormous problems. All we have heard about is this canard about he and Palin being agents of change. THis artical merely shows that Newsweek is complicit in the deception because while it debunks some of the rumumors it does not address the out ant out LIES that she stood in front of America and told. I fo one do not want four more years of that for our country. Will somebody please look beyond the end of their noses and see that this the same old stuff that we have been served for the last 40 years? They depend on your stupidity to win and it works every time.

I AM NOT a Republican. Up until this year I was a card carrying Democrat. After our "illegal" primary on January 29, I changed my party affiliation to INDEPENDENT. I have been totally fed up with the Democratic leadership that is UNAMERICAN. After watching C-Span 2 (while working at home) I saw my esteemed great Democratic Senate leaders fight every logical and common sense solution amendments proposed by MODERATE Democrats and Republicans. I then starting research the most economically detrimental laws passed by our US Congress and discovered the names of the Obama team had WRITTEN AND VOTED for those laws. The lack of manufacturing is the main problem for our economy. And manufacturing pollutes our countryside. And Pelosi is trying "TO SAVE OUR PLANET" by making our country a service economy and not a manufacturing economy.

  • Posted By: Jimtastic @ 09/10/2008 9:51:44 AM

It is nice to see the Newsweek finally address spurious emails. I wonder where they have been all year long. OH, it wasn't a Republican on the end of them.

Let us remember that Karl Rove has a history of pulling stunts. I seem to recall the Gore campaign getting a Bush debate prep video, the FBI being called in and it turned out to have come from the wife of a Bush staffer. Or the time he bugged his own office and called the FBI. Or the time he stole an opponent's letterhead.

What proof do you have to support your comment - "Karl Rove has a history of pulling stunts," specifically the ones which you allege in your rant?

Also, what proof do you have that Karl Rove is ardently involved in the McCain / Palin campaign?

      Awaiting your reply!

Ok, so she wasn't a member, but her husband and her attended a convention for the AIP ... if the Obama's went to one convention of the same nature they would have been crucified for being unpatriotic. Palin is getting way too much in her favor because she is a white female. (ps - I am a white female ) I don't think it should be an issue at all, but she is the one who made the lipstick comment and pitbull comment, but can't take the heat? She doesn't talk about the issues at all and Obama does ... so why are people so confused on who to vote for? People rather vote for someone who looks like them and appears to be like them. The middle class will totally be screwed if McCain wins ... WAKE UP PEOPLE. Look at the issues not the lipstick!

  • Posted By: s1m0n @ 09/10/2008 10:37:09 AM

Do the writers of this piece understand what 'out of print' means? Their claim--that the list of books Sarah Palin allegedly wished to ban contains out of print titles, and that this proves the list false is absurd. Some of the books in any library will be out of print at any particular time. The fact the list names OP titles tells you nothing at all about the authenticity of the list.

    • Posted By: Pupster @ 09/10/2008 11:38:45 AM

The McCain camp has already conceded that Palin had indeed asked about banning books to the librarian. They just couched it as "rhetorical". Yes, we're supposed to believe that elected officials ask librarians "rhetorical" question about banning books even if they have no intention to. When's the last time you asked anyone about "rhetorical(ly)" banning books?

PS - I'm not even a republican, but I'm happy to see someone at least trying to clear the air so we can talk about actual issues instead of the nonsense we've seen so far.

If all government programs were reviewed and waste was eliminated, fraudulent claims DENIED, and fraudulent paid claims were repaid (including Haliburton and Blackwater) and it ONLY amounted to 10%, we could get a 5% tax break and use the other 5% to reduce our debt. Chances are is there is closer to 25% waste and no party has wanted to have fraudulent claimants to repay - Not Haliburton, not the Katrina schemers. Then, we could stop of funding of the crazy research grants, including the one started under Clinton days for researching the amount of C02 emitted by farting cows. (Are we going to give them Beano's or exterminate them?) (Tidbit - Soy milk is the alternative - but too much soy can make males sterile.)

Congress are the ones who WRITE the laws and VOTE in the laws. Congress has the responsibility of overseeing the enforcement of the laws. It's the 110th Congress under the control of Senator Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who have done NOTHING to benefit our country and our citizens. Rather than allow debate and amendments to bills, both leaders have tried to push through laws that needed corrections - the "It's My Way or the Highway" attitude. For the past two years, the Democratic leadership has only been trying to increase the sheer numbers of Democrats in office (we need an absolute majority to get anything done.) rather than actually having legislation to protect our economy and our people. They have put their POLITICS ahead of our COUNTRY.

Rather than address the oil prices with solutions, they ONLY want their special interest and lobbyists businesses to succeed. Pelosi has heavily invested in Wind Energy - therefore she refuses to allow funding for research in carbonless coal emissions. They offered ZERO solutions for transportation energy, other than electric cars. And, our prices of gas are still outrageous. And, they STILL are not addressing the problem.

(Now that the consumers are not buying as much gas, the highway tax fund is WAY under budget. Expect the 111th Congress immediately in January, 2009, under Pelosi and Reid to add a HUGE increase to the Gas and Diesel per gallon tax!) -- Stick it to the peons who shouldn't be using the fossil fuels for going to work, Pelosi needs that fuel for her weekly trips back home or around the world.)

You are correct, we do need an absolute majority, DEMOCRATS!! It wasn't the Democratic majority that was responsible for not getting things done, it was the insistance of the Republican minority and a Republucan President who were responsible for the gridlock. Remember, YOUR President used his veto more than any other President in modern history, so much so, he should have changed his middle initial to V for Veto.

It was the absolute majority of the Democrats that brought us NAFTA (11/20/1993) under Clinton. DO NOT FORGET THAT THE DEMOCRATS ARE AGAINST POLLUTION - THAT INCLUDES MANUFACTURING!!

It was the absolute majority of the Democrats under Carter that gave us the Windfall Profits Tax of 1981 which eliminated the small business investment tax credit - which closed many within a 2 year period after it became law.

With an absolute majority, the NEW Democrats would use OUR tax dollars to fund research into renewable energy AND GIVE THAT TECHNOLOGY TO INDIA, BRAZIL, and CHINA for mass manufacturing (Senator Boxer S Amdt 4825 to S 3036)
