Excellent investigative reporting. Dig up transcripts from a messy divorce case.
Keep up the good work Newsweek.

      MEDIAHACK:

Newsweek did not dig up anything. Someone (probably Mr. Wooten's lawyer's by way of democrat operatives) gave them selective portions of an otherwise confidential custody proceeding. I don't mean to fault them for obtaining it or printing it. However in not giving its provenance they deprive their readers of important context.

Palin will be the sam kind of Bush-Cheyney republican. Remember Valerie Plame, Roberto Gonzalez and other similar scandals. Also, will Todd become a part of the Vice Presidency. It seems to me Todd was Lt. Governor for the state of Alaska. He was in the office all the time. He's embroiled in her scandals and he even took trips and filed for per diem at the tax payer's expense. As citizen, I am appalled at the prospect.

This article reads little differently than gossip. Looks more like an attempt to smear Governor Palin. You have nothing substantial to say and shouldn't be repeating this garbage in the first place. I can see through the comments as being contrived to raise suspicions about the Governor. If you are guilty of pandering to those who oppose Governor Palin's candidacy, you should be ashamed of your comments. I suspect that you are not reporting the news objectively her, but are trying to smear Governor Palin. If you have been pressured to write such a story, have the backbone to verify the facts objectively and report them. This smacks of yellow journalism!

This is called vetting not attacking and if you had read the article, you would have noticed that they did verify the facts with court documents. It is not a smear campaign.

  • Posted By: Akborn1 @ 09/10/2008 10:02:08 AM

Someone should look into past problems with police within the State of Alaska. You would find that several individuals made it through the vetting process, and were inducted and trained, only to be found lacking later, and are spending jail time themselves. Recruiting is an issue in Alaska. Jobs are unfilled at many levels. This is really about individuals offering information on a policemans character that would/should effect the persons job relationships. My personal concern is that the individual with these traits is still employed. However, police organizations are quick to protect their own. Perhaps rightfully so, and this should be seen as nothing more than micro management by the boss. But, if I knew the man I hired, had employment standards as these, I would certainly think about changing the direction of the AST with new management.

Barry. You have not followed ANY of my advise (advice). I told you not to go to Europe. I told you not to go on vacation. I told you to tone it down in Denver. I told repeatedly (go back and read my posts) NOT to choose Biden. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. You not only prance around Europe, you itch to speak at the Brandenburg Gate. You go on vacation and Russia invades Georgia. Rather than toning it down in Denver, you do a Nuremberg. And you choose that old, hypofrontal goat Biden. WHEN are you going to learn? Fortunately, you got time. Have Biden feign an illness and withdraw. If he won't do it, then dig up some dirt on him and force him to resign. THEN,,,,,,,,,do what you should have done in the first place. PICK HILLARY.

  • Posted By: gneves @ 09/10/2008 6:00:40 AM

What if it is true about the state trooper? Why isn't anyone looking into that. It woud not be the first time a cop is a bully to his family and relatives and hides behind his badge. When the bully is "called out" --the bully always, always goes after the victims. He did shoot that moose illeagally, which proves he thinks all laws do not aply to him.

    • Posted By: mbarnich @ 09/10/2008 10:00:09 AM

Gneves, you maroon! They did look into it and the judge told the Palins to shut up, which they DID NOT do. Now there is a state investigation.

    • Posted By: mslindab @ 09/10/2008 9:21:59 AM

It has been investigated more than once. Palin wanted more punishment for him than what was given. If no one had a protection order against him, they weren't worried about that. They just wanted him fired.

What's the matter? Are you too high on crack to make sense: "before to say on public"... You MUST be an Obama supported!

  • Posted By: Jmonti75 @ 09/10/2008 9:59:55 AM

Wow! Politics aside...what a blatantly biased and inflammatory article! From the very title, you make it sound like the Judge personally warned Palin when in fact the Judge warned her Sister and extended family members, a common place statement in bitter divorces. You make is sound like she was publically disparaging the Trooper and completely disregarding the Judge's warning when she responded that he was a potential threat at a deposition after her election. My favorite part was when you implied that the protection order was unfounded because it was dismissed after a few months when those types of orders are often dismissed after short periods of time. Or when you repeat Palin's allegations again implying they are unfounded and include in a parenthesis that one of those allegations led to charges! Shame on you for writing such a one-sided article. If you don't like Palin fine. We all have a right to our political opinion but at least try to present the facts in an even-handed fair manner.

  • Posted By: jim_jones_cocktail @ 09/10/2008 9:50:39 AM

All emotion, no logic. I think it is hilarious how some of you want to hate Palin with such passion when you didn't even know who she was two weeks ago. We need the Vulcans to save us from all you emotional wrecks. Where is Mr. Spock when we need him? If you think the Democrats are the "good guys" and the Republicans are "hell on earth" then maybe you need some meds. Aside from a handfull of wedge issues, they are all the same. Go ahead though, let Keith Olbermann & Bill O'Reilly push your buttons. Freak out one way or the other after the election. Enjoy.

    • Posted By: kfink @ 09/10/2008 9:59:04 AM

you are correct. we didnt know who she was two weeks ago - and she didnt know who WE were two weeks ago. and I dont hate her - she is a typical Republican - all hypocrital "values" and absolutely no substance. And I am not going to freak out after the election - if they are elected, this country will get exactly what it deserves.

Why are so many Americans so shallow! Paris Hilton makes a joke commericial in rebutal to McCain's claim that Obama's popularity make him like a pop star, and suddenly a whole bunch of people want to elect her for president. Now McCain picks a former beauty queen for his running mate, and suddenly everybody wants to vote for that ticket. Can't you people look beyond the flashy, glitzy stuff and think for once? No wonder so many houses are being foreclosed! If people would just stop and think instead of rushing for the gimmee, gimmee, gimmee stuff, things would work out a lot better.

    • Posted By: dtribit @ 09/10/2008 9:57:30 AM

Sounds like you talking about Obama.

    • Posted By: BunchofChemies @ 09/10/2008 9:50:45 AM

Actually, there is evidence in the recent polls that show a McCain bounce that the pollsters used different weighting for the parties, giving the Republicans 5-10% more members than they had 2 wks ago. That means the media is manipulating the stats to make it look like a horse race, when it isn't.

  • Posted By: Akborn1 @ 09/10/2008 9:55:46 AM

Regarding "Trooper gate". Someone should look into recent problems with Law enforcement members within the State of Alaska. Because of recruitment issues, more than one unbalanced indiviudal has been inducted and trained, only to have the individual prove unworthy later in their careers. ultimately spending jail time. I would note that the Palins were attempting to point this out to a very protective society, the Alaska
State Troopers. There is no more protective "old boy network" than polcing organizations. If anything, troopergate is nothing more than micro management by the boss.

After Obama and the Marxist Democrats were to get through with us if elected you would in the future think that in these times we WERE rich. Unless, of course, you're one of those who gets the free handouts that people like myself have to pay for in taxes.

  • Posted By: NewsweekComment355 @ 09/10/2008 8:42:33 AM

This issue is not relevant. It appears that it was a messy domestic dispute that turned public. If Palin and her family feel threatened they have every right to seek a protection order. It looks like they went public because they did not feel the system was working. We should focus on Palin's extreme right wing agenda, her attachment to big money politics, and her lack of experience. Here is a hypothetical, would you swap McCain with Palin? In other words, would you run McCain as VP and Palin for President? If you feel this question is ludicrous, she is not qualified for VP.

    • Posted By: mslindab @ 09/10/2008 9:02:54 AM

You make a good point. Did they ever seek a protection order? Hard to believe it wouldn't be granted for a governor. If she didn't, they I believe her motives were vindictive. She wanted to get him fired. She wasn't protecting anyone.

      • Posted By: Andy Alice @ 09/10/2008 9:55:13 AM

Protection orders are very like some legislation: They sound particularly good on paper but are often not enforced. This MAY be the history in Alaska.

    • Posted By: Natalie in MN @ 09/10/2008 9:24:55 AM

Messy custody battles are one thing. Many people have behaved badly in that situation. But firing Mr. Monegan is an issue that matters. In our country we have laws and procedures, which were followed in Wooten's case. Elected officials should not ignore results they don't like, and they should not abuse their power for personal reasons.

  • Posted By: Ossifier @ 09/10/2008 9:38:37 AM

Wow! This is a bombshell. Mccain and Palin are not fit to serve!

    • Posted By: cjr0814 @ 09/10/2008 9:54:18 AM

A couple of things that are completely left out of this.
      1. Palin can fire Monegan for any reason. She doesn't have to justify it, he serves at her discretion. If she doesn't like the way he looks, she can fire him. All articles conveniently leave this out. Federal courts have upheld this right. This is fact and is indisputable
      2. Wooten has admitted to all of the items that Palin has referenced. In turn, Monegan suspended him. These are not "allegations" any longer. They are fact. Wooten even gave an interview where he admitted all of these acts. Rather interesting that Newsweek continues to call them allegations. At issue is not whether or not he has done those things. It's whether or not the punishment fit the crime. That is fact and is indisputable.
      3. Monegan was offered another postion, Executive Director of the Alcohol Commission, when he was fired. If this was about retribution, well, seems a funny way of going about. Also, none of the sucessors of Monegan have fired Wooten. These are the facts and are indisputable.

Monegan didn't go the Employment Commission because he has no standing to do so. That is why this is being played out in the political arena. And make no mistake, this is all just a political grandstand. It's why McCain wasn't worried.

    • Posted By: dtribit @ 09/10/2008 9:53:54 AM

      How is this a bombshell?

  • Posted By: Joe_123 @ 09/10/2008 7:41:06 AM

This is a domestic dispute regarding Palin's family sister and should not even be an issue in this election. The media is trying to make something out of nothing. Monegan has been quoted as saying Palin never pressured him to fire Wooten. Case closed. Monegan knows why he was fired. He couldn't operate within his budget while Palin was cutting cost throughout the administration. This investigation will blow over quickly. There are hundreds of people in Alaska trying to dig up dirt on Palin including National Enquirer who will pay tens of thousands for information, yet this is the best they can come with?

    • Posted By: mbarnich @ 09/10/2008 9:54:09 AM

No, Joe_123, this is the worst they could come up so far. Palin is an overbearing bully. I'm sure lots more will come out soon. Like her husband belonging to a separatist party. That would surely not be tolerated of a Democrat.

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 09/10/2008 7:46:15 AM

Ordinarily it would be a domestic dispute, but this is the governor abusing her power when she was a self-touted reformer that was supposed to sweep corruption out of office. Granted, it's definitely not a major issue--but neither was Obama's religion, how many houses McCain owns, etc etc. Politics these days are all about making the other guy look worse so you win by default.

      • Posted By: mt_redoubt @ 09/10/2008 9:09:14 AM

You definitely don't get it Joe - Monegan's budget was cut because he wouldn't illegally fire Wooten. If have been reading the Anchorage Daily News, which has been covering this story for the past few months, it be clear to you that Palin would not fund the Alaska State Troopers as long as Wooten was on the force. That means that public safety throughout Alaska suffered. Then she faulted Monegan for budgetary performance after not cutting, but starving, a department of funds - the Troopers cover a huge geographic area in a state rife with domestic violence, homicide, and suicide where they are the first responders -- where is Palin the promoter of good government in that policy? Finally, this abuse of power was was not brought up because she became a VP nominee, it was in the works months before, furthermore, she brought it upon herself and now other potentional ethics investigations.

  • Posted By: Balistk @ 09/10/2008 9:30:39 AM

This article is the most twisted set of biased trash I have ever heard. Typical Newsweek; instead of concentrating on the sorry a**hole who threatened to do bodily harm to an entire family because of his own inability to get along in civilized society, you center your entire report around low-life judge who obviously has a political agenda and totally disparages Palin's family's right to free speech regarding the case. If he thinks the Palin family have done something wrong why doesn't the creep (judge) bring charges?

    • Posted By: klebrun @ 09/10/2008 9:53:31 AM

Apparently the Palins were not willing to repeat the accusations against the trooper under oath, which suggests that they are just a lot of nasty post-divorce rhetoric.

And, given Sarah Barracuda's history as an attack dog, even a judge would have second thoughts about issuing a contempt of court ruling to a governor of the state.

A VOTE FOR MCCAIN IS A VOTE FOR PALIN AS PRESIDENT. MCCAIN IS AN ELDERLY MAN, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.....72 YEARS OLD. HIS REACTION TIME IS FALTERING, HIS JUDGEMENT IS GETTING FOGGY, AND HIS BODY IS GOING DOWNHILL FAST. HOW IS HE GOING TO WITHSTAND THE PRESSURES OF BEING PRESIDENT. YOU DO KNOW THAT HE CHOSE PALIN AS VP ONLY AS A P0LITICAL CARD., NOT BECAUSE HE THOUGHT SHE WAS BEST SUITED FOR THE JOB. HE LOOKED AT HER AND SAW VOTES.....PLAYING THE MOTHERHOOD CARD, THE CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES CARD, THE RURAL AMERICAN CARD, THE PRO-LIFE CARD.......HENCE THE CHRISTIAN VOTE. BUT BE REAL. CAN YOU HONESTLY TELL ME THAT HE WOULD HAVE CHOSEN PALIN HAD HILLARY GOTTEN THE NOMINATION?? NOT A CHANCE. HE'D HAVE GONE WITH AN EXPERIENCED MALE THAT WAS WELL QUALIFIED. PALIN AS PRESIDENT SCARES THE B-JESUS OUT OF ME. AND CUT ALL THE CRAP ABOUT HER BEING SUPERMOM. IF I MADE WHAT SHE DOES A YEAR AND HAD ALL THE HELP THAT SHE HAS, I COULD MAKE MY LIFE EASIER TOO AND AFFORD TO GIVE MY KIDS GREAT CARE. .
LASTLY, I AM SICK TO DEATH OF HEARING PALIN PUSH THE MCCAIN WAS A POW CARD. GIVE ME A BREAK. SH-T HAPPENS TO US ALL. EVERYONE HAS HORRIBLE THINGS HAPPEN FROM TIME TO TIME, BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE EVERYONE SPECIAL, OR SUITABLE FOR THE PRESIDENCY.

    • Posted By: Andy Alice @ 09/10/2008 9:52:19 AM

It is my take on this post (and many others of fact and opinion) that Palin is McCain's life insurance policy. Given his age, physical and mental health, his life is in danger. By choosing a running mate who is totally unacceptable to any informed and thinking citizen, he is guaranteeing that his life will be fully protected. Palin is quite good as an improvisionational comic. Too bad she auditioned for the wrong job!

    • Posted By: rocude @ 09/10/2008 8:57:47 AM

LET IT GO MAN...IS EVERYTHING ABOUT HER A CARD? GIMME A BREAK...

      • Posted By: IssuesFirst @ 09/10/2008 9:41:39 AM

Perfectly said, great job! A lot of people are looking for all types of excuses not to vote for Obama. It's like Palin is now the answer, yet McCain is actually campaining to be president. Ok, then.. let's focus on the issues.. Imagine a young girl violently raped by some monster and getting pregnant is the process.. Would you be happy with a VP that signs a law to send this girl to prison for aborting that rape child? Focus, people, focus. What does Palin bring to your life? Do you really want that? What about the republican party and it's principles.. do you think the mistakes made by Bush were his alone? Who writes Palin's speeches? Who runs the entire McCain campaign? Isn't it the same gang? Do you even know how many people have died of AIDS in Africa ever since Bush came into power and reversed the AIDS erradication programs created under the Clinton regime in favor of abstinance education? The same abstinance that Palin is (unsuccessfully) preaching?

    • Posted By: IssuesFirst @ 09/10/2008 9:26:08 AM

The first sensible comment in a long time! Great judgement! For all of you who really want plunge America back into the stone age by voting McPalin. Ask yourselves one question about the real issues? If a young girl got viloently raped and got pregnant in the process, would you be happy with a president or vice-president that would sign a law to send that young girl to prison for aborting that rape child? Wake up people... go back to the issues! What will Palin bring to your life?

  • Posted By: kfink @ 09/10/2008 9:51:57 AM

This election has turned into a joke. The American people, whose stupidity I never underestimate, have once again fallen under the Republican's uncanny ability to tune into that stupidity and manipulate it. We had eight years of Bush. It would actually serve this country right to have four more years of him with the "Mavericks" McCain/Palin. Or Palin/McCain, I guess it is. Outrageous!

  • Posted By: dtribit @ 09/10/2008 9:51:17 AM

Is this the best you can do? This clearly shows that you have nothing better to write. It's apparent to anyone with common sense that the trooper has issues (4 EX-WIFES), and that Monegan didn't want to take orders from a woman.
