I wonder if Palin was a short, overweight, single person, maybe even gay, would the Gov of Alaska be the VP selection.
I wonder if Palin was a short, overweight, single person, maybe even gay, would the Gov of Alaska be the VP selection.
Newsflash, Newsweek: The First Amendment is not just a right, it's a responsibility. The premise is that a FREE press will inform the electorate. Get free and do your job. Or stop calling yourself the press and admit you've been sacked behind the line of scrimmage by the spin factory. If the American voter is ignorant, it is not completely the fault of the electorate. Take a look at yourself - do you like what you see?
The premise is that a free press will inform the electorate - but the premise is also that the electorate will allow itself to be informed. Yellow journalism isn't new, neither is propaganda, and neither is the American public making decisions based on hysteria rather than reflection.
But we may be sinking to a new low. Sadly, there is so much hate, so much name calling and invective on both sides, it's a wonder we haven't started our second Civil War.
A quick review of the newspapers of 1865 will reveal the same destructive atmosphere then that we have now. Moderate voices from both sides were denigrated and ignored, much as they are today. We are still digging ourselves out from the extremes of the arguments of states' rights/abolition; neither side could hear any thing the other had to say.
Somehow, 2008 doesn't sound much different than 1865.
Until folks are willing to listen to each other, instead of engaging in the all-consuming sport of finger pointing, and until folks are willing to examine their own party's missteps and mistakes, there will be no rational electorate.
If we continue to avoid acting like grownups, we will get what we deserve; anarchy.
Well said.
Distortions, innuendo and just plain old lying are used because they work. The public is conditioned to accept sensationalism; in fact, they demand it. When delivered in sound-bite fashion for a headline, it grabs one's attention. Most readers/viewers are scanning to see something that looks interesting, and it's tough to beat a bold assertion. And the retraction, if ever given, rarely gets as much attention as the original charge. Most of the electorate is pre-occupied with the other business of life to either investigate or remember. Also, most voters align themselves with one party or another, and will usually do a little twisting to stay with that party. It's nice to believe in independent voters, who supposedly look anew every election, but it's probably a smaller group than what is commonly thought.
Some people are just idiots and vote for irrational reasons like, "I wont vote for Obama because he's a: Muslim, terrorist, elite, sexist, etc." They wont vote for him even though not doing so will hurt their own self-interest, i.e, "I wont vote for Obama because he will raise my taxes" when in fact he will lower them for 95% of Americans. Amazing. But hey, this country was stupid enough to vote for Bush twice; just scare them to death (see McCain's intro video before he spoke at the GOP convention) and they will line up.
I think we need to vote based on the American value system. Sarah Palin is hot. I love her clothes, her eyewear is sold out everywhere. My *** daughter idolizes her oldest daughter. We really need to do this guys...everyone is way too uptight about sex! Let the sexual revolution start now...VOTE FOR SARAH!!!! What a HOTTIE! (I'm speaking for quite a few of my friends as well)....PLUS added bonus is she won beauty contests! We'll have the best looking president out of all the other countries & so we'll do a lot better than having a howdy doody goofy looking genius leading us.
This just goes to prove the mentality amongst some voters. If looks are important why a President and not a Queen? Perhaps I should add my name to the Republican ticket. God knows I'm better looking than Palin. Personally I prefer brains over looks......maybe you should too.....Obama/ Biden!!! How will this benefit us when leaders of other countries look across the table at Palin and think "what a hottie?" Republicans had a fit when Pres. Bill Clinton was getting a b--- j--. How are you going to feel when the VP starts getting asked to give them? You're setting her up referring to her as a "hottie." You idiot.
A rational voter is an informed voter. Someone who may never vote a straight ticket, but votes by why he or she feels will be best for country, county and town.
RBOLEND.
McCain will control spending!!!!!
OH my god!!!! The holy grail has been discovered now....... You know that's exactly what Obama will do also!!!!!
I am sure foreign investors are now feeling so much better now!!!!
An AMerican politician saying that he will cut taxes, and cut spending...... Now that's never heard from before!!!!
You know my friend.....I don't believe the American voter lacks intelligence... Is more like we selectively live it at the door when we need to. For you to say that tax cuts will be paid with (what else) expenditures cuts... Completely ignores the fact that you do not have one shred of credibility left as a party in that regard..... 8 Years of doing exactly the opposite attest to that.
I think a rational voter is someone who listens and never votes a straight ticket, unless that is how they feel their country, county and community is best served.
Personally I feel John McCain is a pathetic example of a man. After what was done to him eight years ago he has voted with Bush 95% of the. All he wants isto be President of the United States and he doesn't seem
to care how he gets it. I am a political junky so I keep close tabs on the candidates and what they say..How
stupid is he to think we women are so dumb as to vote for him just because there women. Barak Obama is
going to make a very good President. When is McCain going to talk about the issues at hand? Why does
the media not ask him questions about any of the issues ? If anyone is sexist it's the McCain campaign
they are the ones who chose someone, who is someone barely anyone knows, for his vice President. How
pathetic they are. McCaine can never win this election people are tired of being lied to. God help this country
if the republicans get in again.
Most voters believe in god an most believe in social security. You cant get more foolish, ignorant or just plain stupid than that.
Remember when McCain said about Hillary's health care bill: it looks like a lipstick on the pig. No body said words about it. Actually, by using the same word to chacacterize McCain pretending he's a reformer while in back ground still adopting the same Bush's policy, McCain got the nerve to apologize. Did McCain do so when he said the samething about Hillary?
The big difference is that McCain said Hillary's bill while Obama did not name any name.
Nicolas Isamel
I too am convinced there are no rational voters in this country. Since we elected the last guy because he was someone we wanted to have a beer with, then I say that we get exactly what we deserve. This country is headed for Third World status soon enough, with China, India, and Russia (not to mention Osama Bin Laden and his regrouping al Qaeda) all laughing their guts out.
Sprachkundiger:
Several decades ago the largest single budget area was national defense. Since then is has changed to intitlements, mostly social security. Check the facts instead of listening to the MSM.

You know my friend listening to you one might think the REPUBLICAN Bush Administration was a model of fiscal responsibility. We all know in fact the opposite to be true. So why is it again that you say "Liberals are irrational"? Because we do not want to vote for the policies of the Republican party represented and supported 100% by Conservatives?
Or was Bush a Liberal now?
Hey!! If McCain that voted 90% of the time with Bush, and the Republican base that supported Bush 100% of the time are now the party of "change" and you actually buy it, then I am sure you are ready to endorce just about anything comming from your Party as "rational" .
As for the rest of all mortals we find it a bit irrational to vote to reward the party that gave us 8 years of Bush with still 4 more years!!!! What a dumb bunch we are right?
Or maibe is just that unlike you guys, we do not have masochist inclinations.
Rational voters? Yeah! If there were more of them in America, there would be no question as to which candidate would be the most beneficial to our country, not a "dead heat," as some polls show. Too many vote for four essentially Non-rational reasons: party, right or wrong, gender, race, or religion. None of these are, in the long haul, valid. Few, if any "races" in world history are unmixed; evangeligcals cherry-pck from the Bible to spew hate against ALL Muslims, not just the extremists, while still claiming they follow Christ's teachings; women frequently vote--and seem to be shifting to McCain, just because he has a women on the ticket--for their own sex, presumably because no women has yet been president or vice-president. This ignores, the issues off STABILITY, DIPLOMACY, and BIPARTISANSHIP, which, I am sorry to say, Hillary DID NOT and does not possess. Witness her comments about "annihilating Iran" a few months ago. We desperately need a president, whether Republican or Democrat--that can curtail the belligerance that the U.S. has shown since WWII and shift most our tax dollars away from the Pentagon and the trogs there, to education, job-creating industries, infrastructure, and environment. Not one single country/empire that relied on arms for its power exists in more than a shadow of its former self. All, from Babylonia, Egypt, Rome, Greece, the Ottoman Empire are today countries with essentially poor populations. We're next,.
ONLY SOLUTION
Every intelligent as well as struggling person
votes absentee. When a recount is needed,
only the intelligent and poor voters will count !

You say:
Have you heard Sen. McCain explain to us how does he plan to PAY for all these tax cuts????????? You think there's a bunch of morons out there in the world willing to continue to finance a bunch of worthless IOU's into infinity???? You think that foreigners burned in still another Wall Street debacle feel like supporting the DEMONSTRATED financial irresponsability of your party?
I say:
Yes, McCain has explained how to pay for the tax cuts. He will control spending, the major failure of the Republican congress lately. The conservatives of this country desperately need reform of the Republican party, spending is the biggest problem, followed by corruption.
You say:
So I am glad you are for a Corporate tax brake my friend, I am just curious as to where have you been in the last 8 years????
I say:
I have been wringing my economic conservative hands for the past 8 years, hoping for a maverick or two to shake things up. Now we have them, they are going to win, and with any luck they will do what they say (something politicians of both parties fail on constantly)
If you want rational voters, Obama will lose. A rational voter would not put into power the party that sat back and whined about every 'Bush bill', then APPROVED EACH AND EVERY ONE. A rational voter would not want an America-hating, elitist, fake self-appointed messiah leading some spiritual revival. A rational voter wants someone with experience, backbone, and character. A rational voter wants McCain.
No way. No how. No Obama.
Right on, newage_lightbulb! I'm with you - I don't want an America-hating, elitist, fake self-appointed messiah leading my country.
No way, No how, NObama. (We can thank Hilllary for that one, too!!)
Voted for each and every one because then congress was controlled by the Republicans. Did you forget that? John McCain has character??? Is that what it takes to cheat on your wife, to change your vote a dozen times to fit the times, to disagree with a tax break and then when it fits his politics to vote for it. Yep that is really character. Or better yet don't even know how he voted some of the time. You my man don't seem like a rational voter.
Wow, your comments remind me of Obama. He's a flip-flopper too. The democrats always say what the public wants to hear, but then when they win the election, it'll be whatever they really have in mind for us. Sorry, I don't feel like believing the democrat lies and BS, and hope the other true American's vote for McCain/Palin.
Thanks for absolutely proving this authors point in this article. The american voting public is just like you....an ignorant fool. Just to help you out with what you are...ignorant means you make decisions and comments with no knowledge. I guess that makes you stupid as well.
Thanks for proving that this article is dead on about Americas voting public. You are a fool.
In light of all the dim witted 'new'anced old aged adage of GOP talking points from stale sarcastic ambivalence that come on these boards speaking on behalf of rational voting, I see that some views are have no barrier that will be broken. Sounds like some people still believe lies. Vote for Bush 3 times, vote for irrationality your whole life.

You say:
2) The Bush Administration could have cut taxes for Corporations, but instead they cut taxes for the 1% richest among us. The tax cutting, combined with the nedless war in Iraq transfomed an inheritance of surpluses into a legacy of the highest deficits in our history.
I say:
The Bush administration cut taxes for everyone who pays taxes. Taxes were cut by a larger percentage for poorer than for richer. The MSM is reporting more dollars of tax cut for the rich, but you have to understand that a smaller percentage of a larger number is often a larger dollar value than a higher percentage of a smaller number. Math 101???

You say:
1) The Bush Administration you support, with the FULL SUPPORT of Sen. McCain you also support gave absolutely NO TAX BRAKES to U.S. Corporations in their entire 8 years of the Bush Presidency. Corporate tax was 38% when Bush started, and today is 38%.
I say:
But I do not support the Bush Administration. He has failed on so many fronts to live up to the conservative beliefs. Additionally, while the main stream media have replayed the clip showing McCain stating how often he has voted with Bush, and repeated as being 90%, you need to research the fact that most of the time it was budget related votes. Big issues where McCain has proven to fight for you by being a maverick he has not agreed with the President. Yes, Corporate tax in this country is 38%, while Ireland is around 15%, in fact our corporate tax is the second highest in the world, trailing only Japan. Still, increasing corporate tax has the bad results of driving business away. Have you not noticed the business leaving this country?
