I despair when I think our fate is in the hands of Wal-mart voters. Would it be wrong for people to have to take a test in order to vote? To have basic knowledge of 1) the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and 2) current events, and thus make a decision based on something other than "yeah, I'd have a beer with hIm any time!" I know this is an extreme view but I am extremely worried - how much more of our country do we lose before we do something about it? We the People better get it together and insist that the Wal-mart voter become educated. That voter has as much at stake as I do - he or she just doesn't know it.

The problem is not rationality. The problem is that too many people vote based on emotion rather than fact or logic. It is this situation that Karl Rove, and those like him, have exploited masterfully.

This election so far is once again about emotions rather than issues. One set of emotions relates to excitement about an appeal to our aspirations and hopes. The other emotions relate to identity and connection with kindred spirits. It is these latter emotions that the McCain campaign is appealing to. When the dialogue is about feelings rather than facts we make very bad choices. We allow our emotions to disregard the obvious and the difficult in favor of what is familiar and comforting.

This election finds us at a pivotal point in our history. Our vitality as a nation is under withering assault domestically and internationally. From the state of American education to foreign and economic affairs we are failing. If we do not turn the dynamics of this election towards the issues there will be grave consequences for our future. If we do not demand truth and accountability from the candidates we will squander our hard fought privilege of voting. If many in the media do not turn away from punditry, the petty and the sensational, in favor of educating us factually about the substantive differences between the candidates, they will fail us again as many did by becoming swept up in the emotions leading to the Iraq War.

The real choice in this election is whether the electorate will choose to rely on facts or feelings when they cast their ballots. Rick Davis, John McCain???s campaign manager, has said that ???This election is not about issues.??? We very much need to prove him wrong.

The difference between Dick Cheney and Sara Palin is Lipstick
The difference between Bush and McCain, none.
America you get what you wish for.

I think Obama would have won with a landslide if he would have had the security of not thinking Hillary would out shine him...Now Palin outshines him and he runs the possibility of another 4 years of Republicans.
i certainly not voting for obama and it has nothing to do with racism... I did not trust him from the start and I don't trust him now...Not enough experience and his associations are very questionable.!

Ok, Enough! The real REASON this political race is in a dead heat is not because of Palin, oh no. It's just as plain as the nose on Obama's face, he's not white, as simple as that. If Barack Obama's name was: Barry Williams, Baron Johnson, it still wouldn't matter. The same people all over the US are willing to do what ever it is by any means necessary to insure that the US would never see the day that a Black Man take the oath for President of the US. Sure, sure, the political Hacks won't dare say what is the Dinner topic in the US.
So instead of looking at the candidate and beyond his skin color, America Lies in her daily ritual of denying the very outward prejuidence the media has put Barack Obama through the "Vetting Process" that is traditional in our "Politics". But along came a spider (Sara Palin) and the rules change. Where is the constant playing of Thisa person's comments in her own words in a church saying not suggesting that the Irag War is in God's Plans. Didn't know that God was name George Bush, because George started the Irag War, not God. So America, you think it's bad now, under President Palin, this country will splitter into nothing. A woman President sure, but how about a normal Woman to be President instead of a woman that would take the country back to the Pre-Revolutionary War era. So the main reason that People love this unknown but known Woman is simple, ANYBODY, YES ANYBODY EXCEPT A BLACK MAN AS PRESIDENT will do just fine. "A Mind is a terrible thing to waste"! So is racism. This Country don't deserve Barack Obama, you people just love racist, dumber than cow dung Presidents, thus our current is what you'll get and what you deserve.....

Thanks for a good post., I come from the Detroit area and have learned there are just as many great African Americans as there are White Americans. It's really pathetic that so many Americans still believe they are superior over others. God made us all the same with an array of shapes and colors and I'd bet He would say He made us equal to one another. I'm not a religious zealist, not even close, however, I believe we reap what we sow. At the end of their days on this busy earth biggots will have to answer to only ONE.

Everyone who votes will make a big decision. Right now, whether we're Dem. or Rep., I don't believe ANYONE can say they know their candidate's plans to move the country forward in just a precious few months. I am spending more time than ever trying o educate myself for this election. I am troubled by the personal bickering and lack of relevant information put forth to help us get really clear on all the issues we face.

Shouldn't the campaigns be held to educate us so we can make the best possible decision and have facts to base it on? Am I missing something? .

I truly think that Americans (even the racist ones) would have voted for Obama in a landslide were it not for the whispering campaigns in email and the push polls that treat the madrassa story like it is reality. One poll said that one in eight still think he is a "secret Muslim" . This is from an ANONYMOUS EMAIL!!!! I f he loses because people have taken to believing anonymous emails, then we as a country don't deserve democracy! I find it incredibly ironic that the country that is dolling out democracy at gun point can so easily let its elections be hijacked by misinformation!

It bothers me at night to know that half the women I work with are voting for McCain, because their only explaintion given to me is "I like Palin". I hope I speak for all women out there when I say... "YOUR MAKING US LOOK BAD". Why don't American's get it? Did they miss the last 8 years... are they missing the blatent lies being broadcasted. I know some of this has to do with their trust in Faux News. I just wish McCain supports could tell me what it is they like about him because I have never once been told its because of his health care stance!

    • Posted By: goodthingscomeinsmallpackages @ 09/10/2008 7:29:29 PM

Yes, I like Palin, but i also like McCain. Why? I respect his efforts to work with Democrats and Republicans alike. I respect and am grateful for his military service. Do i agree with him on every issue, or do i like everything he has ever done or said? No, but so far i have not been presented with a candidate with whom i agree on everything or who has never made a mistake. Most importantly, i like McCain and Palin both because they are willing to speak in defense of those American individuals who have no voice in this country: the people who still live inside their mothers. If somebody can't recognize the value of human life from its very beginning, i have reason to then question what else they are failing to recgonize. So for now, until i am presented with a more desirable pair of candidates, i am a "professional, Catholic, female voter" -- a daughter of a legal Mexican immigrant -- for McCain/Palin.

Yes, I like Palin, but i also like McCain. I respect his efforts to work with Democrats and Republicans alike. I respect and am grateful for his military service. Do I agree with everything he has ever said or done? No, but i have yet to be presented with a candidate with whom i agree on all issues, or who has never made a bad choice. Most importantly, i like McCain and Palin because they are willing to speak up for the most voiceless individuals in our country right now: the people who still live inside their mothers. If somebody cannot recognize the value of human life from its very beginning, then i have reason to question how many other important things they would fail to recognize.

I get it and I'm a woman. Some just aren't intelligent enough...I can't think of any other reason. The Republican party represents the wealthy and preys on the weak minded. If you're stupid enough to fall for their tactics.....McShame on you!!!

Thank you! I am a prof catholic female voter for Obama too. I am voting for someone that I believe can make this country stronger economically and politically.... not who shares my gender, or color, or ethnic origin, or crede.

Comment: Personally I feel John McCain is a pathetic example of a man. After what was done to him eight years ago he has voted with Bush 95% of the. All he wants isto be President of the United States and he doesn't seem
to care how he gets it. I am a political junky so I keep close tabs on the candidates and what they say..How
stupid is he to think we women are so dumb as to vote for him just because there women. Barak Obama is
going to make a very good President. When is McCain going to talk about the issues at hand? Why does
the media not ask him questions about any of the issues ? If anyone is sexist it's the McCain campaign
they are the ones who chose someone, who is someone barely anyone knows, for his vice President. How
pathetic they are. McCaine can never win this election people are tired of being lied to. God help this country
if the republicans get in again.

God will help this country, the question is will he help you and the other nonbelievers out there? Do you really know what change you will get with Obama? I know...it's called short"changed".

As a minister I find in your comment the motivation and the reason that I started fighting all this mess. God has answered our prayers in Palin and as long as REAL believers will get off their butts and fight, the country can be saved a little longer from the fools and heathens voting for the likes and lies of Obama. If he wins it will be the curse of God on this country

Funny, I was taught that Christ preached loving thy neighbor, feeding the hungry, treating the sick, and caring for the children. These are the things that the democratic platform advocates by raising taxes ONLY on people who make OVER 250K a year. Sounds like caring for our community to me. I also thought christ preached to care for the air and the water, and to judge not lest ye be judged. MAybe if we all spent more time helping the young and the old, caring for the planet, and less time bossing everyone else around we would be able to make this country the amazing place she has the potential to be.

You have hit the nail on the head!! Women are not stupid as McWar/Palin may think. And we are all tired of lying and misleading government!
Perhaps we don't know what change we'll get with Obama/Biden; but I know one thing and that's that at least it will be much more honest than anything we've gotten in the last 8 years or anything we'll get from McShame. He's one of those who would never admit a mistake was made no matter how much or who it may harm....personally or for the country!!! He thinks he's GOD!!
      Well, we'll soon find out!! OBAMA/BIDEN '08

  • Posted By: GregHere @ 09/10/2008 7:10:42 PM

....................................It is easy to understand why so many of America's voters are not that happy with what has been going on with government and want to say something about it. The Bush Admistration stole the year 2000 election and started down a path of deception and lies along with their blunders for two terms in office and while entrenched they did many bad things to us and what is supposed to be this wonderful Country.
Now McCain surfaces and starts with the deception in his campaign again and appears on television telling us false things while blinking his eyes and trying to look as innocent as a child. America looks bad before the Nations of the World and Americans do not want McCain to carry on with Bushism for another four years.

  • Posted By: TheInformer @ 09/10/2008 5:45:00 PM

Be realistic! This isn't United States of Africa! I think McCain is really smart! Sex sells...any moron knows that! As for the war, Bush made the best decision. I believe we should invade a couple more countries with their heads up their backsides while we're at it. We Are by far the WEALTHIEST country out there and every foreigner wishes they lived here. We are also the smartest people. The difference between Republicans and Democrats is only one thing....SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST belief. Us Republicans believe in the God given notion that only the survival of the fittest is the way to be. No more social security, no more welfare and we should not send money and supplies to other countries.....Thats the Democratic way, or should I say, the commies? Look, every single other nation out there owes us big time. We're always giving out money to other countries to bale them out of their hair brained schemes! We need to elect Sarah Palin and call their loans ASAP! As for the war, we continue to let the people volunteer to go as they're mostly the shallow end of the gene pool anyway! At least I know I'll never have to worry about being drafted....isn't that what the "ghetto of Michigan"'s people are for? War is very good for our economy as it creates lots of new jobs and makes our great country even wealthier. Democrats are SO stupid. Buch of commie, colored lovin people they are. I think most republicans are behind me when I say these things. And most would agree with me when I say that I don't think girls should be getting abortions! Our youth needs to take a look at Sarah Palin's daughter. She is doing the responsible thing and getting married. I think she is an excellent role model for our kids these days. I also admire Palin for supporting harsher penalties for police officers and wife abusers. I believe that it is she who can get our courts reformed back to where they should be in not granting fathers these nonsensical equal rights when it comes to custody! Especially if a woman claims he has abused her! So many fathers, as Palin has first hand experience, do not deserve to see their children at all. I believe Sarah Palin should be our number one choice on election day to change the laws in regards to fathers rights! She has already demonstrated to us she can do it in Alaska...I believe she can use her power to do it anywhere in America! I speak for all REPUBLICANS when I say NO BLACK MAN should run this country! We need another man like George BUSH!

    • Posted By: nbart @ 09/10/2008 7:08:04 PM

apparently this "american" and possibly "christian" has not read the constitution which states that all people are created equal - isn't that what we're supposed to be upholding when we fight wars? isn't that why foreigners used to admire us so much - because we believed those things. the republicans are such hypocrites. yes, sarah palin is an excellent role model for young girls: a liar and an adulteress!

    • Posted By: raven6275 @ 09/10/2008 6:10:08 PM

Response to Mr. Informer. I think you have forgotten. The only real Americans here are the American Indians. Also God did not give us any rights. Re-read your history. Didn't you know it was the romans who gave you Jesus to believe in. Why do you think the new testament was created. Also didn't you know Jesus was a black man. Look where he came from (the same part of the country we want to go to war with and is fighting with). Have you seen any blonde, blue eyed people there. Sometimes you fanatics are so ignorant in you beliefs, thinking and your speach. (one last thing, why do you get dark when you go in the sun? duh! because you have some part of you is black). Is that why you are so angry and irrational?

    WHALA.

I don't believe it is partisan to point out to you that the Republican party supported the Bush/Cheney Administration 100 % of the time, and McCain supported the Bush Administration 90% of the time.

I'll make it simple for you . Here's where Bush and McCain stand on key issues .

    They agree on:

    Abortion and judges
    Diplomacy with Iran and Syria
    The war in Iraq
The exit (if you can call it that) strategy in iraq
    Education
Immigration . (He was for it before he was against it)
Energy and oil ( He was against it before he was for it).
    Healthcare
    Medicare
    Social Security
    Same Sex Marriage
    Taxes
    Trade
    Wiretaping and Executive power

Where they disagree to an extent:

    Guantanamo Detainees
    Conduct of the Iraq war
    Russian policy
    Interrogating tactics
Federal Spending . When it comes to earmarks and pork-barrel spending only.

That is the extent of it.

Now altough we can not lebel the entire Republican Party as homogeneous, we can safely say that the Republican party supported the Bush Administration and can not run from that fact at the last second.

I understand what the Republican party is trying to do. The GOP is simply trying to hide on Sen. McCain's reputation of a maverick in the hope the American people are dumb enough to forget who supported the Bush Administration 100% of the time. Is a hard trick to pull out, but in America you never know.

OH, and wala. About your remark " Palin-- She truly represents the people of America. Palin believes there's no Global warming, is against abortion rights, believes we are on a mission from God in Iraq and fully supports Bush's policy and war, etc, etc. If that's what represents the American people ---- Then the American people you know are not the same one I know.

I voted for Obama therefore I most live in Tanzania or Botsuana because the guy does not represnt the American people. Only Palin does.

What do you know--- We live in different countries pal.

  • Posted By: whala @ 09/10/2008 6:07:00 PM

I am Republican, and am NOT proud of the Bush/Cheney admin. I am also not so foolish to believe that a McCain/Palin admin would necessarily be anything like the current admin. McCain has been one of Bush's harshest critics on out of control spending, how the Iraq situation was handled, and his extremely partisan appointment of his cabinet, etc. I don't believe for a moment that you can label the entire Republican party with all of the poor qualities of the current administration any more than I believe it would be fair to label the Democratic party with all of the poor qualities of the Carter admin.

The problem with politics today is that partisanship has become more important than representing the people of America. That is what is appealing about Palin--She truly does represent the people of America. How often have we dreamed of having a REAL American in the white house who understands real life and real American issues? That's what she brings more so than anyone else in the race.

    • Posted By: bear8675 @ 09/10/2008 6:36:22 PM

Real Americans? Not a single person I know agrees with her fanatical off the deepend social policies. Not everybody in this country is a christain. I would hate to think what my family survived in Germany just to come to America and be told once again that we have to convert or be disenfranchised. Thios great country was founded on the premise that governments job is to deal with infastructure, not to regulate religion. How dare you tell me I have to agree with your religious principles! All Iasked you to do was pay for firetrucks and paramedics, maybe fill some potholes and fix the mass transit.

Matt01 - "He would not have got to the place he is at if he was not an inspiring speaker."

Iam not addressing Senator Obama's speaking skills, but I must point out the flaw in your argument. Many poorly spoken people have attained great position and power - our current president is a prime example.

  • Posted By: lw/w&w @ 09/10/2008 6:14:09 PM

I blame some, if not most of the public's misconceptions regarding politicians on the media. So much nonsense and irrelevant happenings and comments flow through the media every day. It used to be that the media only wrote about intelligent and substantive utterances. Now , they make a whole article about "pigs lips". They want to divulge every personal tidbit about each candidate for sensational reasons, instead of sticking to the politics. And they quote people without bothering to verify the truthfulness of the remark or comment. In the case of Iraq, the media should have reported the truth of the matter, instead of showing sound bites of Bush lying over and over.

  • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/10/2008 6:08:26 PM

Rational voters? What about an issue oriented press?

Why isn't there an article about HR 800? The democrats are pushing this to be law, and it will be law if Obama is elected. They want to eliminate the secret ballot in union elections.

That would pretty much mean that all businesses in the US will become union shops. Another hand in the worker's pocket. Can they afford that?

  • Posted By: This Is My User Name @ 09/10/2008 5:58:12 PM

Here's a question I've never seen answered to my satisfaction:

If the founding fathers believed in the wisdom of the common people, why is it that we don't elect the Supreme Court at all, we don't directly elect the President, we've only elected the Senate for the past century or so, and that the only federal body that has been directly elected from the beginning, the House of Representatives, is also the body that applies the fewest checks on the others?

The answer, of course, is that the founding fathers, rightly, distrusted and feared the common people and deliberately set out to limit the damage they can do.

  • Posted By: no expectations @ 09/10/2008 5:19:24 PM

As usual, vindictive and self-righteous postings from both sides. Wow, even God gets dragged into it! Exactly why "rational voters" are on the decline and likely to remain so in this country. The advent of 24 cable news channels seems to have deepened the divide in this country. Conservatives run to Fox and liberals to MSN to reinforce their views. Pundits like Hannity, Olbermann and O'Reilly preach to the choir and fill their vacuous watcher's minds. "Rational" is a word that rarely applies to many voters. It's now all about warped ideologies.

I've spoken with Democrats who voted for Eisenhower and Reagan and Republicans who voted for Kennedy and Clinton. Not much chance of that any longer. That would be require being rational.

Sarah Palin is a good case in point. I have nothing against her but I don't understand why Republicans are in a swoon over her. When you scratch the surface, there isn't much there. I asked six of these Republicans what the attraction was and they couldn't provide a satisfactory answer. They even knew they didn't have a real good reason. But I'm sure they will tune into Fox and have one provided for them.

    • Posted By: vmac @ 09/10/2008 5:51:50 PM

You are so right, they will listen to Hannity and find all the irrational reasons they want to convince themselves that Palin is it--forget about McCain--It's like he's not even running, just recounting his 40 yr old POW experience--I'm African-American, my father fought in WWII, my husband in Vietnam and my grandson in Iraqi Freedom--The republicans act like they are the only patriots in this country.

  • Posted By: roget thesaurus @ 09/10/2008 5:46:46 PM

Based on voting trends over the last 56 years, voters DO NOT trust Democratic candidates, having shot them down in flames 2 out of every 3 elections over the last quarter of American constitutional history. Is seems that Democrats are on the far, the very far side, of the bell-shaped curve.

  • Posted By: mellin66 @ 09/10/2008 5:45:54 PM

I wonder what effect emails have on how voters think? I know I've gotten some really bizarre claims, but some were very thoughtful.

  • Posted By: DUMPLIN @ 09/10/2008 4:25:14 PM

I AM A RATIONAL VOTER. I VOTE FOR WHAT IS BEST FOR AMERICA AS A WHOLE, I DON'T WANT GOVERNMENT TO DO FOR ME WHAT I CAN DO FOR MYSELF. I AM OFFENDED WHEN I AM TOLD I AM NOT ABLE TO MAKE IT ON MY OWN. MCCAIN WAS NOT MY FIRST CHOICE, PALIN IS GREAT AND OBAMA NEEDS TO GO BACK TO BEING A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER. AFTER SOME OF THE REMARKS HE HAS MADE LATELY HE IS HARDLY PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL.

    • Posted By: raven6275 @ 09/10/2008 5:45:01 PM

response to Dumplin@ and ft350pony66. By your comments, you have just proved how stupid your thinking is. McCain/Palin, when I think of them I think the pot calling the kettle black. My fear is for our country if they get elected. I believe if they are in the white house, we will either get taken over by China or Iran and all our rights taken from us. And the only people who will have a right to complain is the ones that voted for Obama. I can't believe how stupid some of these republicians think. We have a 9.2 trillion debt and how do you think we are going to pay it off "duh" raising taxes. Are you that ignorant that you can't see this. And the republicians will also raise taxes. Our country is going to hell and a hand basket very fast. We Americans always think we are so much better than other countries, but we tend to forget we are only a few hundred years old, where others are so much older. They have been through so much more than we have and learned a lot more (why do you think they laugh at us sometimes). We are children playing in an adult world and still getting it wrong.

I want to believe Americans are smart people, but the way this election is turning out, I am being dissappointed again. People do not think for themselves, they need people like John McCain, Sara Palin, George Bush and many others like them to tell them how to think. For all you religious people out there, the one thing you keep forgetting is two of the commandments (thou shalt not lie and thou shalt not steal). Haven't Sara Palin committed both and John McCain at least one of them.

I consider myself a very informed person and I am not better off than I was eight years ago. I do not want someone who openly lies (and the lies can be proved). I do not want someone who is an embarrassment to my gender (female), and who will allow herself to be used (don't we call that prostitution).

So I say this, if John McCain and Sara Palin is elected to the White House, then you deserve whatever happens.
