Galasso is spouting ignorance. Let's look at the facts.

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU has conducted exhaustive studies on voter fraud. They have not found one proven case. Galasso needs to check out the website and get the report for himself. However, .the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU 20 million eligible voters could be disenfranchised under the current ID laws. The Bush Administration has touted the elections of 2005 as proof of progress in Iraq. Yet these elections did not require photo ID???s. Bush went the the United Nations today touting America???s commitment to democracy, yet Voting While Black and/or Voting While Latino remains a federal crime in many states, including John McCain???s Arizona. My thanks to Alder for telling us the truth. Before we enlist the UN to promote democracy else where, we need to ask the UN to supervise our elections, to ensure that we have free elections in this country.

Democrats are masters at voter fraud - dead people vote as well as people who have left the state and non-citizens (illegals). In many small towns where all the citizens know each other this isn't an issue. But in larger metropolitan areas where the electoral vote really has weight, there should be some scrutiny. Look at the Kennedy/Nixon race in 1960 when Chicago "helped" at the ballot boxes. As close as the Presidential elections continue to be - what's wrong with asking someone to produce an ID? ID's are available at any DMV. It's a civic duty to be part of the solution to the problem instead of showing up at the polls as the problem. All of this conspiracy garbage about the Republicans targeting African Americans is ridiculous. Jessie Jackson was on his soapbox during the "hanging chad" election claiming that Florida Police were setting up roadblocks to prevent AA's from going to the polls. He disappeared as usual when the story fell apart and his preposterous lie was exposed. I think Jonathan Alter's brain has gone soft. Columns like this - with no real proof - just speculation - that one Party is denying a segment of the population access to vote adds to the rancor and dysfunction of the entire process.

The GOP is targetting more than African American voters. The McCain campaign has been sending absentee voter applications with the WRONG return address to Democrats and Independent voters who have contributed to Obama and who live or once lived in swing states. Robert Kennedy Jr. has said that he has co-authored an article about how the voting legislation passed after the 2000 debacle in Florida is being used to eliminate legitimate voters from the electoral rolls. Unfortunately, it won't be published in Rolling Stone magazine until mid-October. Anyone who believes in the integrity of the American electoral process should think again. Books by Greg Palast and Richard Hayes Phillips should be on everyone's reading list.

One major and consistent problem with democracy is that the votes of the uninformed count for as much as those of the knowledgeable. Studies show that the average uneducated voter consistently adopts incorrect and demonstrably bad economic policy positions (against free trade, for farm subsidies, etc.). Perhaps throwing a couple extra hurdles in the way, then, is not such a bad thing. The resulting electorate will not necessarily be the best informed voters, but they may act as a reasonable proxy based on their demonstrated interest. This ID policy, while perhaps an inconvenience, is in no way a denial of someone's right to vote any more than the inconvenience of filling out an absentee ballot is.

    THE BUBBA & BUELAH VOTE . . .

It doesn't matter to 'Appalachia Bubba' that the housing market and foreclosure crisis is hammering Wall Street, and the little retirement Bubba once had just went up in smoke with the $700-billion bailout!! Bubba can't think! Bubba just drink the GOP kool-aid then mindlessly vote AGAINST HIS OWN INTEREST AS INSTRUCTED BY FAUX NEWS.

It doesn't matter to 'Appalachia Buelah May' that her son is on his third tour in Iraq for a war over WMDs that was never there. She is too stupid to understand the real enemy was hiding in Afghanistan, NOT Iraq; and that her son was called into harms-way because of the incompetence of Bush and his sidekick McSame. She is too stupid to understand her son and his friends are not coming home from Iraq if McSame becomes President.

It doesn't matter to 'Appalachia Bubba' that the services his private company provided around town has just vanished when the last big factory left town for overseas slave-labor. Bubba is clueless and don't understand how Bush/McCain policies has ripped our national economic, domestic, and international financial prowess.

It doesn't matter to 'Appalachia Buelah May' that McCain defines middle-class as anybody making just under $5,000,000.00 and he can't remember how many homes he has. This helps explain why McCain is out of touch and has NO educational policies to help Buelah get low interest loans for a college education.

    GOD Bless America!
    GOD Bless Obama!
    GOD Bless Biden!

Wow, I expected to see this type venom at huffington post or politico, but I am shocked that people feel compelled to drop the f-bomb???on Newsweek. Regardless of your political affiliation, name-calling and personal insults always come across as petty.

There are two good points here that should be considered: 1) Democrats have been engaged in quite a bit of voter fraud 2) the bill in Indiana may have been in response to illegal immigrant registration.

To the first point, democrats just need to own up to the short comings of what we hope are just a few radical organizers and insiders. No matter how much better you think your candidate is, everyone gets one vote, period. That said, the new Indiana law does nothing to address this problem because what was happening was already illegal. I think you can make an argument that requiring an ID would make it harder for people to commit voter fraud at the booth, but that doesn???t seem to be where the major voter fraud has been. So how does this law address the specific instances of voter fraud that have occurred? And how does it help enforce the laws that were already in place that made the kind of fraud happening illegal?

To the second point, if illegal immigrants are getting driver???s licenses and registering to vote and then voting???how does a law that requires you to have a photo ID stop them from voting? Wouldn???t it make more sense to revamp how IDs are issued?

So here???s the problem: you have voter fraud and you have illegal immigrants voting, but this law doesn???t really address either of those issues. And it places a disproportionate burden on poor and African-american citizens. So why would you enact a law that doesn???t really solve the problem you claim it addresses and negatively affects the citizenry? And why do you get more republicans pushing these laws that have a much greater impact on democratic voters? Why not simply pledge to provide better training and more man power at the polls? Or put together a totally new system that would require all citizens to head to the DMV, not just the poorer ones?

Also, please check out www.factcheck.org because there is a ton of misinformation on this page, from the left and the right.

i remember when hilary tried everything to knock obama down even the kitchen sink and it did not work! now the obama camp is trying everything including the kitchen sink on palin and its not working ! she gets bigger crowds at her rallies and he gets small ones his ego is crushed and he is worried that he will lose the white house ! and he should be ! McCAIN / PALIN 08 ! >>>>>>>>>> OBAMA / BIDEN BACK TO THE SENATE !
as history suggests issues of policy will ultimately trump the politics of identity. obama is all about who he is and nothing about what he has done ! McCain is all about what he has done not who he is ! the choice is clear !

One thing that we must all consider as Republicans is the fact that no matter if McCain Wins, or Obama Wins, there will be riots all over America as we have never seen. It is a proven fact that the Afro-American race is never been happy with winning or loosing.
America should prepare itself for one of the biggest racial uprisings in its history.

      Racist!

Believe me, if Obama loses because of dishnest Republican suppression of votes, or mechanical rigging of votes, this elderly white woman will be violently demonstrating against McCain and his band of crooks. and joining with every African American on the streets of New York.....that's if your racist prophecy comes true.

This is absolutely disgusting, apalling, conniving dishonesty. The Republican Party should be so ashamed. How telling. So, in order to keep on winning US elections, Republicans have to resort to cheating.

Just think. If they hadn't cheated in 2000, Al Gore would have been US President. The war in Iraq would never have taken place. 4,300 sons, husbands, fathers, daughters, mothers, wives would still be alive today. The US economy would be thriving, Mr. Gore would be handing over a budget surplus, not a massive crippling deficit and amassed debts, we would be further ahead in transferring from oil dependency to alternative fuels, and we would have made great strides towards global climate control.

Such a travesty that there is only one honest US political party, only one party that has the interests of the poor and the middle classes at heart. Just can't get over the fact that Republicans would exploit poor African Americans and American Indians and take advantage of their poverty, and lack of driving licenses, to keep them submerged anew in poverty......because the Republicans certainly aren't going to do too much to help them rise above their status and participate in the American dream. Only "elite East coast liberals", "left wing socialists" are foolish enough to think that America belongs to all Americans, not just those who earn over $250,000 a year, or own 7 homes.
      Nice. Ethical.

John McCain knew that Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac would collapse, and thereby unjustly burden the American public!

In 2005, Senator John McCain cosponsored the Federal Housing Enterprise Reform Act to regulate the powers and procedures of Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac.

These 2 massive federal finance agencies had been operating without controls in a blatant irresponsible manner, and had been found guilty in court of falsifying financial records and statements in order to provide supposed justification for bonuses to be given to their higher echelon administrators.

These 2 organizations had been coerced by Democrats, who because of political opportunism, wanted them to grant mortgages to individuals who would be unable to make their required monthly payments. That would be in accordance with the irresponsible Democrat belief that everyone should be entitled to have their own home, irrespective of their actual ability to afford that luxury.

Both of these mortgage lending institutions have contributed massive financial sums to support the political aspirations of Chris Dodd and Barack Obama.

Senator John McCain realized 3 years ago that fraudulent transactions were rampant within these 2 enterprises, and that they would soon collapse if remedial action was not undertaken.

Their bankruptcy would result in the American taxpayers having to go into debt to resurrect or ???bail-out??? these fraudulent Congress protected entities.

As was to be expected, this proposal to institute meaningful financial reform measures was obstructed by the Democrats in the Senate, and the proposal failed to be adopted.

This year, due to the Democrat furor over the collapse of Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac, the American taxpayers are burdened by having to pay a minimum of 450 billion dollars to ???bail out??? these 2 recklessly managed lending companies.

John McCain exposed and opposed the corrupt lending practices of Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac.
Barack Obama ???milked the system??? and profited by obstructing reform of their corrupt lending practices.

Democrats have demonstrated that they can wreck the mortgage industry.

Are you willing to vote them into office, and give them a blank check to mismanage the American economy, security, and health care?

Comment to "Davole" on 9/16/08 @ 7:38 p.m.: Perhaps what you've replied to the "Lady Professor's" comment would be true in "your" world, but what you're saying is not true elsewhere...... although we would love to believe it is just that "black and white", it's not!

Requiring Driver Licences as ID and non-driver ID cards have long proved to be discriminatory. In addition to many poor people who do not have cars, have not had the money to drive cars, the driver licence ID and non-driver ID card rules target the elderly who have never had driver licences or have surrended theirs when giving up driving. For poor people, especially those living in rural areas, securing an ID card requires at least a full day of travel --each way, loss of income, etc. For the elderly, the time and travel is extremely exhausting.

    • Posted By: Davole @ 09/16/2008 7:38:13 PM

      Lady Professor -

It is merely your opinion, not necessarily a proven fact, that ID cards "have long proved to be discriminatory."

ID card rules only "target" anyone who is falsely claiming to be someone other than who he or she actually is..

Do you really expect us to believe that many, if any, elderly persons would actually bother to surrender their licence when giving up driving? As a socalled lady professor, don't you think that they would merely stop driving, and let their licence expire? Just think about it!

Also, most professors would tend to know that there is no such word as "surrended" - not very professorial of you.

Do you really expect us to believe that poor people would have to travel at least a full day, each way, and with a loss of income, in order to get an ID card?
Maybe those supposed individuals would actually benefit by finding a better paying job in another locale.

And for the elderly, if the time and travel is extremely exhausting, maybe it would also be so when they travel to the voting poll location.

Or, maybe the government should just hire enough individuals to travel to each of the disenfranchised to obtain their vote.

The government has a duty to ensure that only legal citizens have the right to vote.

The Obama Campaign Sinks to a New Low in Decency

The Obama campaign, as it continues to flounder and sink in the polls, has descended to a new low, even for itself.

Recently it has launched a new TV ad in which a mocking narrator alleges that John McCain is so out of touch with the current generation because of his inability to use a computer.

The narrator does not admit that the reason John McCain doesn???t use a computer is because 5 and a half years of torture as a POW in the Vietnam war cause him to experience severe pain by attempting to do many of the day to day menial tasks which most of the American population take for granted.

Obviously the Obama campaign does not demonstrate any appreciation and respect for the veteran and current members of the US military!

The obamabot ship is sinking, and the crew are sure grasping at straws in their pitiful attempt to deceive the voting public. Yes, Obama approved that deceitful ad - it is consistent with his decrepit morally corrupt standards.

Obviously that empty suit has no heart, courage, sincerity, honour, and respect!

Do you expect a presidential candidate to be truthful in striving to win the election?
If so, Obama just doesn???t ???measure up??? in that consideration!

Obama is an unscrupulous do-anything community agitator who has revealed his true previously hidden self!

On November 4, you, the legal American voting public, have the opportunity and ability to cast Obama back to that slag heap of Chicago manipulators who permeate the slum areas of that city.

THIS ARTICLE IS DISGUSTING!!! Since the primaries, I've read article after article of Alter DROOLING over Sen. Obama or sneering at the opposing side. Objectivity means nothing to this sold out (or bought out, who knows the depth of David Axelrod's extremely questionable connections) jounalist. Everything in this article that serves as any form of evidence, is merely speculation! Everytime Sen. Obama is hurting in the polls, Jonathan Alter suspiciously produces an article that either 1) strongly supports Obama, 2) strongly criticizes his opponent, or 3) riles up some controversy that makes the opposing side seem racist, crooked or evil. Besides, if Alter truly wants to question obstruction to the democratic process, he should do his own research into Barak Obama's early political life and how he got elected the first time!

I am a 23 year old black male from Illinois. I earn under 60k per year. I am voting for John McCain. Just to give some background...I agree with the concept of requiring some for of state issued identification when voting. When I go to vote I am asked for ID. I would hate to go to vote and be told "Mr. Doe, you have already voted today." Does this happen now? Evidence says no. Could this happen without tighter identification requirements? I believe so.

The liberal media loves to make all republican sponsored actions "anti African-American". Poor does not equal Black. Poor equals poor. If the article wants to argue that the legislation would make it difficult for the poorer population , in general, to vote so be it. But do not headline the article with a statement that will surely create an undue controversy.

And finally, shouldn't any self-respecting adult with aspirations of obtaining legitimate and gainful employment have some type of proof of their identity anyway?

The GOP congress seems to be a one issue pony (Drill Baby Drill). Maybe some in this forum can explain to me how will drilling lead to lower gas prices? It seems to me the reason behind the drop in gas prices at the Pump from early Spring is due to lowering demands. So wasn't Obama and the DEMs right all along about conservation?

Let's do some math. If the US consumes 25% of the oil production in the world, but it only has 3%of the oil reserved, how will drilling off-shore and in ANWAR help with the current gas prices? Each day, the US is consuming 22 million barrels of oil. The US produces 5 million of those barrels from Alaska & off-shore. If we were to Drill Baby Drill, that would only lead to and additional 1 million barrels of oil per day. That would means the US would be generating 6 mil barrels while still importing 16 mil barrels. And we won't see that 1 million barrel per day until 10 years from now. Also, just because the oil is drilled around the US doesn't mean it will stay in the US. All oil goes to the world oil market where it is bid and won by the highest bidder. Whose to say that India and China won't out bid the US for oils pumped from the US? Does anyone has an answer to this?

There's a reason why Palin had argued to more drilling. Alaska has a windfall tax on Oil that goes to Alaskan. My contention is, doesn't that money belongs to you and me in additional to Bristol and Levi? Last year, the Alaskan state gov't gave each of its resident $1200 from oil tax. This year it's $3200. Hey ZombieHero, don't you think you should get some of that money? Is Alaska not a part of the US? Does anyone have an answer for this?

    • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 09/12/2008 4:06:42 PM

I don't think anyone expects drilling offshore to reduce gasoline PRICES today; it's a step toward freeing us from our huge dependence on foreign oil. You don;t have to be a rocket scientist to understand that is the benefit. And as for electricity generated by wind, solar and hydro, all well-and-good. But that won't power your car or truck or suv. Compressed Natural Gas sounds great ... in the Pickens' commercials. And it has to help. But converting to CNG vehicles won;t happen overnight ... and it won;t come cheaply. So unless you believe you can live without a car, or without plastic, or even medicine and a million other things made from OIL, we're going to have to do everything we can to conserve AND expand our oil supply. Energy independence is a multi-pronged effort. Bless the Republicans for being willing to use ALL our prongs.

      • Posted By: kle5507 @ 09/12/2008 4:24:24 PM

Who said the DEMs are against driling? They want the oil company to drill on the remaining 75% of the off-shore area that has been authorized. So far, they've only drilled on 25% of the off-short leases. What the oil company want is a drill anywhere policy and that just won't work. You don't give a kid more cake if he's only eaten 25% of the first piece you've given him.

AGAIN, how can we get toward oil independence when that (drill baby drill) extra 1 million barrel of oil a day is 10 yrs away? Picken himself had said the ultimate goal is to have our cars run on electric/hybrid like the Volt from GM. Anyone who understand technology knows that you don't get ther over night. But first thing you have to do is to lower demand. Drive smaller gasoline cars. Drive slower, inflate your tires and let the infrastructure/technology catch up. I give McCain some credit that he's more willing to list Wind/solar as an alternative. That's more than what the bush Admin is doing. But In the end, Obama has the more realistic plan.

        • Posted By: jimbo3800 @ 09/12/2008 7:36:09 PM

Your logic is horribly flawed. You assume that 100% of the land available for drilling has oil underneath it. Logic tells us that is impossible. If there was oil underneath those lands, the oil companies would be all over it.

      • Posted By: JMP27 @ 09/12/2008 5:32:30 PM

it would take 10 years for home-drilled oil to make a difference.

The only way that Republicans could sneak into the White House for the past two election cycles was to steal the Presidential election. America has certainly suffered for it. If you steal an election, the least you could have done was to govern in a manner that would benefit all of the people., not just corporations and the wealthy. The Republicans might just have to resort to stealing this election too. Remember, if it's not close, they can't steal it.
