    It's obvious from some of the comments claiming that 'everyone can get a driver's license' have no idea what kind of barriers poor people of color face. They are less likely to own a car, disproportionately at risk for legal issues and fines that result in the loss of driving privileges under state laws, have lower adult literacy rates that make it harder to understand new policies or acquire the necessary eligibility documents, and are likely to have a long-standing fear and distrust of public institutions that have long made them jump through hoops. Thus, the Republican proponents of the so-called voter fraud laws know exactly who will be most affected and scared away from voting. So yes...it IS both disgusting, dismaying, and un-American.

      Can you get even more insulting towards "non whites"? Why do these people you refer to have fines? Why do they have legal problems? Maybe you can quit making people out to be victims here and quit blaming "republicans" for your own failure. (after all, you must be one of those people in trouble for no reson of your own, right...). The voter fraud is a real issue. Liberals have used this several times in an attempt to cheat the vote to get their way... (i.e. mickey mouse voted, dead people have casted ballots, even pets have casted ballots). So yes there is a reason for requiring proper ID. Your arguement is no more valid than saying the clerk at the convenient store is biased and racist because he/she won't sell someone cigarettes or alcohol because they don't have ID. I mean, didn't ou say not everyone can get ID? That must be therefore a discriminatory act..... HELLO!

      Well I'm happy you have a job- because many non whites have problems getting jobs- which so how affects their abolition to support their families and buy licenses because they do cost money. if they are going to mandatory why isn't it free. The ability to vote is free? Right

Millions of people don't drive cars or have licenses- were you displaced by a hurricane that destroyed everything that you held dear including your family and your house and everything in it. You are slime- many hundreds and thousands of these people are still not home. living in other states while their family is all over the place. So what they don't have a driver's license - and of course you must be white - just so you know there is a lot of discrimination is this country against people who are not white and they suffer- unlike you who is able to sit high on the hog and judge everybody else while you live
      and prosper off the backs of others.
      I hope you never really know what's it like being not white in this country- but if you knew you would have to care about other people and it's quite apparent that you don't- So go to Hell and stay and judge and burn

        Yet there are state ID's for those who don't have driver licenses. There are other forms of legitimate ID's. But the problem is that you want everyone to be able to vote with no accountability so that you can have your dead relative mysteriously cast a vote, or your pet cat, or the illegal alien.... anyone who will push your cause. That seems to be a typical liberal trick to get their way....

        Have you heard of a provisional ballot. All 50 states have them. Allows you to vote if no ID. Show up at voter registrars and show ID and your vote counts. Please give me friggin break. You guys say voting is so important, well lets protect it from fraud, and allow provisional ballots to show ID later when you forget it or lost it. Take it seriously and your vote will count. Just more scare tactics from Dems.

      BTW, we Democrats have many ideas and Barack Obama has expressed many ideas (go read his website if you aren't too lazy). The McCain campaign are using ads that are full of lies (like the 'sex educatoin' ad) - THAT is THEIR only way to win.

      Individual voter fraud is very rare - it's not a big problem. Republicans are "fixing" a problem that doesn't exist just to make it more difficult to vote. That doesn't seem right in a democracy. We should make it easier for people to vote. Many elderly and poor people don't drive cars and don't have licenses.

    The GOP is progressively demonstrating that it has more in common with Nikita Kruchev than it has with Abraham Lincoln. It's ironic that the party that attempts to claim sole ownership of the American flag and of American patriotism, is also the party that spends so much time and treasure attempting to subvert American freedoms and rights. What a despicable group of people the Republican leadership is. We can hang our heads and sink into cynicism and hopelessness or we can fight back. If America is to survive as the democracy that we have known in the past, then all Americans must find the courage and resolve to make it so. If we shirk now, the great experiment will fail and the nation of the free will cease to exist over time.

    Dems using the same old scare tactics like every elections. Scare up the vote. Here is the mantra "The arent counting the votes" "Diebold machines are being used" "African American vote is being supressed because ID law discriminates against African Americans" "People are being turned away at polls" "Police are gates of polls checking for warrents" "Immigration raids are taking place on election day"
    For the last 8 years I have heard all the paranoia about voter fraud and the only no one has been convicted by the Federal Governmant for violating Voting Rights Act. Obama supporters were accussing the "CLINTON MACHINE" of shutting polls down eary. The Black Helicopters are everywhere. I have heard it all. We cant have an election where a Republican wins because it must be fraud. Now Obama supporters are saying polls are biased toward McCain. When does the paronia ever stop. Johnathon Alter has a built in argument that unless Obama wins the GOP rigged the election. They are laying the groundwork for a so-called "stolen election"

    It's not just the black vote. Listening to the Tom Hartman radio program caler after calle--Democrats and Independents who have given money to Obama--from purple states have reported receiving absentee ballot informatin from from the McCain campaign and the return address information is WRONG. Apparently, voter information being given to Virginia students is also wrong.

    I've asked every major media organization that I can think of to look into this. I wish everyone else would do the same. I don't want to see an election determined by voter fraud and suppression. I don't want us to find out after the fact that the side which cheated won.

      Amazing stupidity in the article as well as in responses here by blind brainwashed (or rather brain dead) die hard liberals. Lets check back on voting facts here, actually into the not so long ago past history. Wasn't it the democrats who locked people out of voting areas? Wasn't it the democrats who wanted to discount all the military votes because they weren't "postmarked" in the US since a great many were sent in via the mail by members of the armed service who were serving over seas? It is articles like this one and responses from fools like you who buy into it that really show how one sided you liberals really are. In most cases of voters not being allowed to vote, it has been a democrat, yet EVERY SINGLE TIME, it is twisted and half truthesd to death in order to blame on republicans.

      He has lost his lead? Really? So let me get this straight the candidate with a base of young people who even if they could be polled do not take polls. Name some college student that has been called on a phone poll...................... Then after that how many blacks are polled......................... The fact that McCain is tied or slightly ahead just means nothing. Obama is acutaly 10 to 15 points up so unless McCain pulls away big election night will be a real let down for him and his people.

    Open your eyes and see what time it is. You are the one that is spouting ignorance. That man was not speaking about 'all blacks.' He was stating an exceedingly important point. He was not suggesting that there are not affluent and well educated blacks all over the country like you little Miss AKA. But there are still hundreds of thousands of desperately poor, uneducated Blacks---particularly here in the deep south. Some of them who even experience discrimination from wealthier Blacks (we have a major class action suit involving this in Atlanta). Believe it or not there are huge pockets of poor blacks (go down to deep south Mississipi if you don't believe me) who still don't have access water and electricity in their homes or even indoor plumbing. (you can find this among whites in Appalachia as well). Thousands of people stranded behind in New Orleans is a good illustration of Black poverty. No bank accounts, they use checkintocash centers. No drivers license, they take the bus. A deplorable educational system, they don't have a shot at getting out of poverty. Right here in Atlanta where I live, your soros are going door to door to some of these project homes and doing voter registration drives. Trust and believe they know what's up. The folks they are signing up don't have drivers licenses and some may have never voted before. And unfortunately, this is a rampant problem that has been going on throughout our nations history. It occurred last election with hundreds of Blacks in Florida being denied their right to vote. Educate yourself before you jumpt to conclusions that this man is patronizing you. He's making a very important point.

      Jon Alter's real motivation, and all thinking people damn well know it, is to prevent any type of checks on the validity of registered voters. This will allow widespread voter fraud by illegal aliens, ACORN, and other left-wing fringe organizations that will support the Democrat Party and its candidates. .

    I would have to agree with John Stewart on this one. "The only way to fairly count votes? Have everyone walk out of their house at 6:00pm, with helicopters going around the country, count raised hands. On a serious note, I would be willing to walk the streets of America and help those people(white, red, purple green, black...) get the valid ID they need in order for their vote to count. Wake up America!! Thought this only happens in third world countries?

    The Republican Party (I am a former Republican) got away with stealing the election from the Democrats in 2000, however, it happened because we, the American people allowed it to happen. There were no protests, no national outcry. We should have taken to the streets! Thereafter, heavy-handed, unethical behavior became common practice in Washington. Why?: because they could.

    Now, it is happening again. A new man --a stranger has surfaced in the political arena; a ruthless man who will do anything to win: John MaCain. If he so arrogantly lies to us, it is because he knows that he can get away with it. Let it be clear, that if he, and his party can keep Black people from voting in order to win, they will do it. Moreover, they will get the help of poor people by making them believe that stealing the election is for the highest good! For some moral and devine purpose!

    DEMOCRACY IS AT A DEFINING MOMENT AND IT IS IN OUR HANDS: WE DECIDE.

    Just a comment regarding all you have to go through regarding getting the proper documents. Hate to burst the bubble but your comment about 'like every other citizen' is false. I walk to my voter precint, and say 'Hi I'm Jim S' and they hand me a ballot. There is no requirement for proof, just a signature required to pick up my vote ballot. Clearly Mr. Alter is correct in that it is GOP driven in places they can make an impact. Thats why we send money to the DNC so they can fight the GOP where this occurs. Unfortunately the GOP is the Rich party as well, and the DNC is notoriously broke all the time.
    No real point here, just that its not a balanced system, its being exploited.

      On emory I posted a voter screwup that happened to me. .... to your point - I think we are ALL being exploited. This should be an historic election for ALL of us - ALL of the candidates have great qualifications and should be admired for even TRYING, for the good of OUR country. What do we ALL do - slash and burn - search and destroy - with all this insane partisan nonsense we suck OUR country deeper and deeper into this black hole where NOTHING gets done and all our MAJOR problems drift out there in space where NO ONE CAN FIX THEM. When this country was founded if we didn't have the GREAT COMPROMISER" wise and old, Benjamin Franklin , who with mind bending diplomacy, quietly pushed and shoved his fellow compatriots to compromise, our one nation under God, would not exist. We could certainly use this kind of wisdom now - someone wise enough to reach acroos the aisle of OUR country and accomplish what ALL Americans want. I am still hopeful.

    The law restricting voters has also been passed in Georgia. When I took my 96 year old mother to get her Georgia ID so that she could board a plane and vote, I was told that she had to have a birth certificate because her driver???s license had expired three months before. We went back home, got the certificate but when we returned, it was rejected as invalid because she had hand printed her married name on the document. Not to be out done, we went to another ID office 25 miles from our home. At this location, they accepted the birth certificate but demanded a marriage license to prove that the name printed on the birth certificate was in fact her married name. It didn???t matter that I had her Medicare card, an expired passport with her picture, and her recently expired driver???s license. 25 miles home and 25 miles back, with marriage license and birth certificate in hand, we finally got the Georgia ID. In Georgia, its easier to buy a hand gun then it is to register to VOTE!

      emory - the same thing happened to me when I went for driver's license -didn't have official state birth cert. had to write to another state for same - then didnt have marriage cert with me - had to have both since name was differentt. Go back home - gave them state copy and church marraige cert. A few years ago tried getting passport - this time - even though had picture drivers lD, official birth cert. - church marriage certificate, voters reg. , didn't have official marriage lic. - had to drive to other state capitol to obtain "notarized official certificate" Whew - long day - long few weeks this was NJ and PA - BUT DID NOT FEEL I WAS BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST - BUT WAS BEING TREATED LIKE EVERY OTHER CITIZEN.

        Also, no one would believe this could happen - could'nt vote in 2000 election - had moved - even though I registered - didn't have my name on books in precinct I was registered in - even though I had valid card - went to City Hall to make sure vote would count in 2004 -same thing- wrote writein vote - still didn't count - turns out they transposed my name - City Hall apologized - but vote still did not count. Being a wronged citizen can be trying sometimes but does not mean we give up.
