I just finished "Home". I knew how it would turn out, what Jack's secret was. I liked "Gilead" more. What I love about "Gilead" is that Reverend Ames was such a good person. Robinson shows you in Rev. Ames how it is to live in holiness. It was a balm to be in his company.
Rev. Boughton was not like that. He was someone who had a beam in his eye, while seeing so clearly the mote in the eye of his neighbor, or in this case, his children. He meant to be good. He just didn't get it.
In Glory's case (love her name), I felt a sense of loss or waste. SHE would have been a wonderful minister, but in her time such a calling was not possible.
In "Gilead", I felt each moment was precious. Robinson writes slow-paced books, and in "Gilead" time shimmers with value, as each moment may be Ames' last and he values life so greatly. With "Home", it was slow-paced but I did not feel the value of the slow pace.
I finished "Home", though. "Gilead" is one of my favorite books, but not so its sequel.
