Democratic supporters are tired of losing while Republican supporters have become too complacent about winning. This ultimately explains the McCain-Palin "surge" coverage, as well as the Jimmy Carter-like fall from grace sobbing from Democrats. Regarding these poll numbers, I believe commentators are delivering the wrong assessment: Barack Obama has held his own. His campaign has just suffered the worst two weeks of the season - having his message of change co-opted and forcing him to fight a "two front war" between John McCain and Sarah Palin. Before The DNC, the polls suggested the election was deadlocked. It still is.
Let me remind readers of one other point. In 2004, after the RNC, George Bush had a 10 point lead in the polls. After the first debate, George Bush and John Kerry were tied in the polls. Because the candidates are deadlocked, the debates could be key factor in deciding this election. If the debates are viewed as a "blowout" for one of the candidates, a 10 point swing either way will have a profound impact.
