General Petraeus: Iraq Doesn't Lend Itself to "Victory Slogan"

    Source: The BBC NEWS

    Thu, 09/11/2008 -

McCain and the Republican Party are always touting the "Surge" & "Victory" and I for one am very Glad Patraeus made this statement...

Because it Dispells this Republican "Victory" Bull-Spit !!!

General David Petraeus will leave his post as commander of US troops in Iraq, taking over US Central Command. As the chief of Central Command, the four-star general will oversee the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This week, General Petraeus discussed progress in Iraq and the possibility of victory. Check out these highlights from his interview with BBC, which airs tonight.

On whether US troops could withdraw from Iraq by the middle of next year: It's "doable."

On whether he will ever declare victory in Iraq:

"This is not the sort of struggle where you take a hill, plant the flag, and go home to a victory parade . . . it's not war with a simple slogan."

On his new role of overseeing Afghanistan at US Central Command: "The trends in Afghanistan have not gone in the right direction . . . and that had to be addressed." Afghanistan remains a "hugely important endeavor."

On progress made by the surge: Petraeus said that recent security gains were "not irreversible" and that the US still faced a "long struggle."

Provincial elections supposed to take place this year, but still waiting on parliamentary approval, will test stability in Iraq. If the Iraq war doesn't lend itself to the traditional notion of victory, how will the US know when it's time to leave?

McCain was born in Panama to American parents. Does he have dual citizenship? Does it matter?

To Russ from SD: No. McCain was born to an American GI serving in Panama. He IS AMERICAN.

There is no affirmative action in choosing our next President. No one is owed the job. I am a Democrat who voted for Obama but tired of the race argument. Does this mean because I did not vote for Hillary Clinton that I am prejudiced against women? That because I did not vote for Joe Biden I am anti-Catholic or that I am anti-Christian because I did not vote for George W. Bush? Maybe I am anti white because I voted for Obama?

This absurdity of blacks who feel entitled to the Presidency and who shout "racism!" if their candidate does not win is turning off more white voters like me than it is bringing more voters to Obama.

Sometimes people win and lose based on their record, and Obama is the least experienced candidate for the presidency in history, sometimes because their personality, and sometimes because of the direction they want to take the country - Obama's higher taxes and coddling of Islamic terrorists, people vote a certain way.

To shout racism if Obama loses the election only reinforces the stereotype white people have about Blacks - that you cannot ever criticize a black person, fire a black person, etc etc without being accused of being a racist. Maybe there are lots of people who don't support Obama just like there are those that don't support McCain, and did not support Hillary Clinton, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with gender, race, or religion.

    • Posted By: ritasee @ 09/14/2008 11:19:57 AM

Hey, I am a white woman and I am shouting racism! It's so evident, it's sickening, because we all know there are way too many "closet racists" who will never admit that is the reason they won't vote for Obama. Do you think I don't know what I'm talking about? Guess what, I WORK with them - i KNOW!! It's true! Maybe not everyone who won't vote for Obama, even though he is also white, but way too many people will never admit their racism. Don't fool yourself anymore.

Healthcare is the biggest issue facing us all. And cost and competence of medical providers are not necessarily mutually inclusive. National health care, social medicine, perhaps not ,but affordable accessibility to purchase or buy into plans mandated by governmental regulation of insurance companies is a must. Hospitals already receive government monies from Medicare, Medicaid and Hospital Care for Indigent. Long term this is much more costly to us all. Plus a whole new accountability for medical providers regarding outcomes of treatment. Punishment for malpractice is ineffective in bringing about better medical practice, positive reinforcement for successful medical treatment is a better approach. Pay for quality not mediocrity.

pia1981 you need some credibility to your assertions on Palin . Now before you start ranting at me or going off about aliens in roswell or no moon landing try to get some proof of Palin requiring rape kit payments from rape victims,,,,,

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-09-11-palin-cover_N.htm

Palin told the Associated Press in October 2006, "I've been blessed with the right timing."

It was a three-way race against a seasoned former governor, Democrat Tony Knowles, and a former legislator, Andrew Halcro. There were 23 debates, says Bitney, who helped Palin prepare. She wasn't particularly conversant with public policy, he recalls, but she "learned enough about issues to know where not to go."

She didn't shy away from her conservative stands on social issues. But at one debate, she said she favored teaching students about contraception, including condoms.

Palin won with 48% of the vote. In her State of the State address in January, she promised to shelve the pipeline deal her predecessor had cut behind closed doors and reopen the bidding. In July, as the scandal mushroomed, she signed a bill requiring disclosure of lobbyist gifts to legislators.

On Dec. 19, she signed the oil tax increase. Six days before, in the U.S. Senate, an energy bill that would have repealed billions in tax breaks for oil companies failed by one vote. Obama voted yea; McCain skipped the vote.

You're an idiot! Here's the proof you requested. USAToday has a article about rape victim being required to pay for the rape kits by the town of Wasilla. During the tenure of Sarah Palin.

Even when Obama appears to be behind, newsweek make it out like its nothing. This guy has no proven track record, no experience, and will run our ecomony in the wrong direction. What we need to do is prepare for the future, make the move to be more global competitive and stop buying oil from people who hates us. All the things we need to do is illustrated in McCain and Obama is a dead frog and still under all of this people's vote is based on revenge. What kind of stupid non-sense and idiotic thinking is this from democrats, and republicans who have lost their way. Obama is better then the devil, because he have once again manage to fool millions, and millions more are sure to follow. This man (Obama) stinks to high heaven and I hope he loses every state......

Am i living in the twilight zone? I'm confused hasn't it been a Republican controlled presidency and congress these past eight years when all the things you have described just happened? Where the economy has tanked, mortgage mess, millions of lost jobs, weakened dollar, largest deficit and debt in American history, largest inequality of wealth distribution. Oh wait that is what democrats will bring if they are elected. Do people even think anymore?

      • Posted By: tippology1 @ 09/14/2008 11:07:18 AM

I think you have been living in the twilight zone, because its the democrats who are control of the senate and the president cant get bill pass unless he goes through the senate. I think you need to stop reading tigger and pooh beginner's books and do your homework on who's got he lower approval ratings and why!!!!!!!!!

        Right on, ShawnTX!!

"No proven track record, no experience, and will run our ecomony in the wrong direction" - sounds just like George W Bush when he took office...pretty ironic. huh?

By the way, here is a (truthful) list of Barack Obama's experience:

        Education:

BA in political science (with a specialization in international relations) from Columbia University.

JD Graduate of Harvard Law School (Juris Doctor degree, magna *** laude) ** (which means "with highest honors" for those not up on their Latin).

President of the Harvard Law Review (the first ever African American).

        Experience:

Civil rights attorney (turned down a prestigious judicial clerkship 1 to help those less fortunate get legal representation)

        Constitutional law professor.

        3 years Community organizer.

7 1/2 years Illinois State Senator.

Chairman of the Illinois State Senate Health and Human Services Committee.

        3 1/2 years US Senator.

Member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Environment and Public Works Committee, and Veterans ??? Affairs Committee.

        Author.

Husband and father of two daughters.

Board member of the Joyce Foundation, the Woods Fund of Chicago, and the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

        Honors:

Grammy award winner (Spoken Word category).

Honored by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (for narration of one of his books).

Honorary doctor of laws degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston (for among other things, "advancing and protecting the interests of the less fortunate"2)

        Seems rather experienced to me...

Republicans think 'tough' warmongers should be in charge of America's security and right-wing religious conservatives think it's God's will for thousands of Americans to be killed on Arab soil.

You know inequality of wealth distribution is not that bad, unless you're a socialist. If you are a socialist/democrat you would of course be concerned about this. By wealth distribution you mean take money from those who have earned it and give to those who have not earned thereby uncutting initiative and the ambition of those who earn it. This economic structure has been tried (and failed). That's why we are largely a CAPITALIST country. It's not a bad thing ya hippie.

De-regulation of all the major institutions i.e. banks, oil, education, military support has made the rich richer and the middle class and poor more poor. When Republicans gave access to these institutions to the general public, only the wealthy could manipulate the stock market and because of supply and demand of these stocks in the major financial institutions they increased in value and of course, the rich withdrew there increased wealth, and we, the lower end of the wealth pyramid (95%) paid for it through less, employment, higher prices in food, gas, clothing and basic needs. It is through lack of government regulation that the wealthy manipulate society. Get a grip. If you are not in that upper spectrum of wealth, you will continue to spend every hard earned penny just to minimallly survive and the rich will continue to manipulate our economy. Think about it. Then you must oppose the police department, the fire department, libraries, roads, public schools, and the military, just to name a few. Because each and every one of these is "socialist"; they were all funded by citizens, and those who made more, paid more. Get with it. Come out of the 18th century.

There's a psycological term for when a person takes all of those things that they hate most about themselves (or their group, or party), and attributes them to someone else, it's called projection. What a lie, the Neocons have been in control of this disaster for 8 years, and this "tippology1" talks like it's the Democrats have been in power all that time. Take notice, people that have a brain (I know there are some of you out there)...

      • Posted By: tippology1 @ 09/14/2008 11:04:49 AM

You idoit, your pathetic democrats have been in control of the senate for the past two years. It is these same pathetic law makers who have blocked almost every bill and vote that the President have put together. I mean hears a senate who approval ratings are 11%. Eleven (11%) of the nation have said in some kinda way that they don't think you are doing a good job and you blame the administration, give me a break. What Obama needs to do is play senator for his own state first before running for office. Both his books and his almost two years in the senate before running for office have been nothing but what he would do if he wins the white house. Here's a man that will stoop so low that he is willing to be identified with a race of people he can never connect too. Obama is a faker,a week man because he can't stand on his own and plays with peoples minds, ( maybe not yours because you don't seem to have one). Obama needs to go back the the south side and let Larry Sinclair finish what he started........maybe we can documented more or even get it on camera this time around......

All I have seen this presidental election year is the same old dog an pony show from the Right. Because of lack of vision, greed, corruption, and an unhealthy social stance, the GOP has slowly but surely eroded the very foundations of politics in this country. Instead of this being about issues that encompass 90% of this country, it is about gender, race, and money. When will the near-sighted middle class Republicans understand that this party is not benefitting them, but only causing a gap between the top 1% and everyone else including them? This country needs to look at the welfare of all, not the elite. If this doesn't happen and we continue to pander to only the upper class citizens, we will only make a caste system of royalty of which those middle class supporters will not be a part of. For once think beyond color and gender and look at the erosion of society.

    • Posted By: dhowland @ 09/14/2008 10:56:31 AM

Obama is all lip service. If he was not black, he would not be a candidate. Let him join the ranks of Kerry, Gore, and Dukakas.

      • Posted By: pscollins @ 09/14/2008 11:00:35 AM

And his color matters? Seems as though political stance would mean more than the color of his skin. This is why the Right gains support, too many narrow minded people in this country are far more concerned by appearance than substance.

  • Posted By: KnightHawk @ 09/14/2008 9:51:10 AM

I find it difficult to believe that any right-thinking citizen would vote for the Republican ticket when one takes into account the current market trends. We're engaged in an invasion of a country that never fired a shot at the U.S. A war which is costing tax payers billions each month, an unstable economy and soaring gas prices. Have we become so racist/sexist that we would rather place the entire nation in jeopardy in order to have a white man and woman in office who will surely serve the best interest of the lobbyist and big business? I could not be more disappointed in American politics than I am at this moment in this nation's history!

I am horrified that McCain/Palin even has a chance at this race - and guess what? So is the rest of the civilized world! What a sad state this election is in! I am from the State of Arizona, have been here for 23 years and am married to a Soldier who is now approaching 20 years of Active Duty. Yes, I am very humbled and proud of the service John McCain has given our Nation and although I have not always agreed with him on all issues I did respect him. That has changed! What I have seen and heard from him in this current campaign is disgusting! We have had 8 long years of a War-Monger in Bush and Cheney, we have seen over 4100 of our soldiers killed in a fight for a country that was no threat to us, yet the person directly responsible for the murdering of 3000 U.S. citizens has been running free because not one tenth of our Military has been directed to hunting him down due to Iraq! To hear Sarah Palin tell it, she seems to think that Iraq was our enemy from 9/11/2001!! McCain no longer seems to think the Americans want or need his "straight talk" but would rather have some hollow, lame excuses and to hear him "talk" out of both sides of his mouth, one minute telling us that he "understands" what we are going through, and the next, presenting "plans" that will be nothing more than Bush and Cheney. As Mrs. Palin likes to say "Thanks, but no Thanks"! It is time for the American people to take back our own future, not have it taken from us by a few! By the way, I was raised in what was considered a more affluent suburb in the mid-west, am white, 55 years old, and THANK GOD, raised by wonderful parents who both experienced the depression and who raised us with great Love of God, pride in our Country and the firm belief that you do the best you can, treat others with respect and fairness.
