McCainwillwin, do you have a life? You seem to be able to comment a lot, but not really know the issues. Perhaps, you should venture out into the real world and see what is happening. My question to you is, do you like clean air, uncontaminated food, police, firemen, sewers, garbage collection, some hospitals, public education, roads, bridges, etc. If you answer yes to any of those, then you shouldn't be opposed to paying taxes as that is how those services are paid for.

As for McCain:

From Salon.com:

Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 13:43 EDT
Shhhh! McCain will raise taxes too

It seems that Douglas Holtz-Eakin, John McCain's chief economic advisor, has exposed yet another hole in the Straight Talk Express. Time's Joe Klein reports that in a forthcoming book by Fortune columnist Matt Miller, Holtz-Eakin admits that the next president will have to raise taxes. "If you do nothing on the spending side, you're going to have to raise taxes whether you're a Republican, a Democrat or a Martian," Holtz-Eakin tells Miller.

So why does McCain keep voicing his opposition to tax hikes, and hitting Barack Obama for supposedly wanting them? Holtz-Eakin had an idea about that too. When Miller asked him why Republicans continue to push tax cuts, Holtz-Eakin replied, "It's the brand ... and you don't dilute the brand."

Holtz-Eakin has also previously acknowledged, to Time's Michael Scherer, that Obama's tax plan will lower taxes over 10 years.

So, go ahead and vote for McCain/Palin. You will pay more in taxes, you will pay more in services and, you just might see the draft being reinstituted to have enough bodies to fight all the wars that they seem to want to get us into.

Heh. And here we had NEWSWEAKS paltroons not six weeks ago crowing over an Obaman ''15-point lead''.

• Posted By: olderwiser @ 09/12/2008 8:45:23 PM

poltroon |päl??tro??n|, noun archaic or poetic/literary
an utter coward.
Lee Holmes, I don't mean to be too finicky, but my dictionary defines a poltroon as "an utter coward". How do you get from crowing over a lead in the race to being "an utter coward"?? Not contesting your point that things have changed a lot, just curious. Would one be brave to crow today about a tie?

• Posted By: Lee Holmes @ 09/13/2008 1:02:44 PM

I insert ''paltroons'' [Colonial America 1750-s1800s,also utilized by the British Navy] for the cowardice NEWSWEAK has shown in its favour for its man Obama. Make no mistake. They are not crowing now.

Right-wing extremists tend to dominate blogs of this type. (A lot of them don't work, which is why you see some of them spending hours here, posting to each other.) Enjoy your temporary little "bounce" due to the Palin novelty act/sideshow while it lasts. You've peaked. And you know it.

However, McCain just might win the popular vote, due to the landslide he'll undoubtedly get in the poorer, less-educated states like Alabama and Arkansas. But Obama will win in the Electoral College by narrow victories in a number of larger states with lots of Electoral Votes. And when that happens, will you whine about that being unfair? I hope not. Because the majority of us will be there to remind you of what happened 8 years ago, when the people's choice wasn't allowed to enter the White House. Get ready for it.

• Posted By: Lee Holmes @ 09/13/2008 12:54:46 PM

This is a reason why McCain may still win. Look closely. They still think that you Americans are morons and rednecks. They ,of course, know better. Or do they......?

• Posted By: charliefromtexas @ 09/13/2008 12:39:59 PM

America is where it is at now thanks to the Bush voters.

Bush-McBush voters will destroy America. They are worse than terrorists.

So requiring photo ID to purchase alcohol is racist, by this argument. Isn't voting a little more important than being able top purchase a beer? Shouldn't it require a little bit of effort? Like, say, "catching a ride" if need be?

This is the ugliest, most slanted article I've ever read in Newsweek, and that's saying something.

• Posted By: jmario @ 09/13/2008 12:07:40 PM

"Sixty-nine percent did not know that she favors teaching creationism in public schools."

That's because she doesn't, Mr. Alter--your pollees are more informed than your pollers. What she said was that she favors discussion if students bring it up. Her exact words were: "I don't think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class."

And I find it particularly interesting that what you're actually saying here is that Newsweek conducts push polls that deliberately intend to mislead voters.

Have you checked out the demographics of Ohio, MI, PA, WI, CO, NV lately? Obama is done in VA, NC, GA & FL. Their southern strategy flopped. You're living in denial if you think Wright, Ayers, Odinga, Black Liberation Theology, Infanticide, supporting early release (as a state senator) for sexual predators is going to play well in those states. Obama is done... This election is over.

Stupid Obama

He thinks he can affod the luxury of 'taking it easy' with his campaign. Without the urgency and ferocity, he can never win.

Exactly because the Hurricane Ike is damaging our country so much, that much more WE can't wait another FOUR years! Hurricane IKE is exactly WHY Obama should campaign even harder. That boy is taking it dead wrong.

Just read

Obama scales back campaign events in Ike's wake

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) ??? Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama asked his supporters Saturday to help with recovery from Hurricane Ike and canceled his plans to crack jokes on "Saturday Night Live" in the aftermath of the storm.

This period is the peak for the Republicans. It won't last. There's a reason the post-convention period is called a "bounce". (What do balls do after they bounce once...?)

There's a lot of wishful thinking on the part of the Republicans right now. (Dumb analogies to past Democratic candidates, racist remarks couched in other terms, etc.)

But remember that Al Gore was 7 to 11 points ahead of George W. Bush in mid-September of 2000, after Bush led for months prior to that. For all of the "Palin Hype/Sideshow", McCain and Obama are still even.

If I were the Republicans, I wouldn't get too giddy. There's a very long way to go and the Electoral College map still favors Barack Obama.

• Posted By: McCainwillwin @ 09/13/2008 11:33:37 AM

"Hopeful spin" isn't going to get osamabama elected. Take a look at the trends in the polling and you'll see that McCain's lead is not a "bounce", but a sign that the electorate is gravitating to McCain AND the Republicans. Face it, demolosers, LIBERALISM is always a loser in presidential elections and this year is no exception!

For those of you who keep commenting that McCain supported Bush 90% of the time --can you tell me what votes you specifically disagreed with? (And please do not use Iraq...both Joe Biden & Hillary Clinton voted with Bush on that one.)
So, what votes do you disagree with? And keep in mind that, until last month, during the almost eight years of the Bush Presidency the national unemployment rate has been nearly ONE POINT LOWER than during the 8 years under Clinton. Seems to me a lot of those votes kept more Americans working. You keep repeating this 90% figure --but you never tell us which votes you disagree with. How about some thoughtful thinking here!! Thanks...

In 2007 McCain voted against an increase in the federal minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 per hour. Obama voted for that increase in the federal minimum wage. I'd like to see you live on a gross income of $10,700 a year at a time when Bush's economy has produced the highest inflation rate we have experienced over the past 27 years (5.6%). Does McCain care? Of course not he's married to a multi-millionaire who owns 7 homes, why should he vote for a measure that addresses the simple issue of fairness for millions of hard working Americans?

• Posted By: cuppa jo @ 09/13/2008 7:06:30 AM

After watching the Obama interview, I will be backing McCain/Palin. Obama is too much into income redistribution. I want him to keep his hands off my money! He also did not have a strong answer on how to deal with Iran. He scares me. he has very little experience to be the commander-in-chief.

It is not too late to save the day. We have to persuade Obama to rethink his choice. There is time. I am not even sure Biden wanted to do this in the first place. He does not appear to be into it. Can you imagine the energy, the passion, the vigor, the drive, the competitiveness, that Hillary would bring? She is a lot hungrier than Biden. She would be able to take on Palin I can't imagine who persuaded Obama not to choose Hillary Could it have been Soliz-Doyle? Did she hold a grudge against Hillary? Michelle Obama? Father Pflagel. I hear he is one of Obama closest advisors. Obama got
bad advise. He got bad advise, I tell you. It is not too late. We can't let him fail. We can't. It would be such a shame if this decision cost him the election.

Bailouts and Gov. Oversight

Generally speaking, I too am for smaller government. However, I also believe that Govmt needs to play a vital role in enforcing REASONABLE rules/regulations pertaining to Govmt backed businesses, quasi Govmt Biz's (e.g., Fannie & Freddie) and Big Corps. As we all know, w/o the proper oversight things happen ... greed and corruption creep in. In fact, there are some that would argue that Bill was partially responsible for the Tech Wreck of the '90's (Dot.Com boom/bust) and W's responsible for the current Mortgage Meltdown and credit crunch of today. Sometimes it seems like Big Gov. hires guys like Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and Jose Feliciano as Big Gov (and quasi Big Gov) Watch Dogs to oversee (well overblind) various important agencies. It's the old see no evil ... hear no evil. And with Bill it was "DON'T ASK ... DON'T TELL." Remember that? And that didn't just apply to a certain group of folks in our military trust me. Continued ...

• Posted By: Richard1327 @ 09/13/2008 11:07:24 AM

Bill settled for "Don't Ask Don't Tell" because he couldn't get the Repub Senate and the heads of the military to support gays to serve openly with no restrictions. Bill tried for full equality, but couldn't get it passed.

• Posted By: JohnPolitico @ 09/12/2008 11:22:13 PM

The only difference between Bill and GW is a smile and a smirk:

Bill screwed over a lot of unsuspecting people (Dot.Com Bomb Era) while he sported that charming smile of his. It was all about Uncle Sam getting his dirty little Capital Gain taxes. He didn't care about all the shenanigans that were going on behind the scenes. Enron? WorldCom?? Hmmm ... that's just to name a couple. (Hillz is no different! As they say, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.)

GW did it with a smirk. Sadly enough, GW took cronyism to a new level. And yes! The rich got richer under his reign: No bid, Big Gov. contracts being dished out to all his buds during this war/occupation, big time tax loopholes/subsidies for oil companies, Execs over at Freddie's and Fannie's house banking away boo-coo bucks until they ultimately collapsed, Political (unjustified) firings of US Attorney's. Sheesh, the list goes on and on. And guess who's gonna freakin' pay for all this crap?! Yup, yup, you guessed it: The good ol' reliable American taxpayer. But! If you don't think the C'tons did the same type of crap while they were in power ... well ... I got news for you. Trust me! They're no different. And that's precisely why I don't care for either family anymore! They've had their time at the helm. I've had enough of them already. It's time for some fresh blood. Thank God ol' Hills was defeated!!

• Posted By: JohnPolitico @ 09/12/2008 11:26:27 PM

Next defeat is BO. Now as far as McC goes ... well ... he's the best this country has to offer right now. The pickins 'r' slim folks. But when it comes to McC, I sense that he really & truly cares about this nation. I believe him when he says Country First! Now he may not be as charismatic, charming or as eloquent as Sen. Cool, but I'll take SUBSTANCE over style any day. Sure, generally speaking, the Repub platform favors the rich when it comes to tax loopholes. Not taxes! But tax loopholes/shelters folks. But hey, I don't see the Dem's doing anything to change things. And they got control of the house right now. No excuses!

The truth is the Democratic politicians or no different than the Republicans when it comes to power-hunger and greed (mucho dollaros). In fact, they take care of each other when it comes to making and retaining money (tax loopholes/shelters). The two party's just act like they're different so as to fool us all. Each party just spends a poop load of our tax dollars on their party-line pet projects. If a Dem's in the W. House they spend boat loads of money on Social programs and BS (wasteful) public services/jobs. Heck, they make-up jobs just because ...

• Posted By: JohnPolitico @ 09/12/2008 11:30:32 PM

When Repubs are in office they spend and/or dish out a poop load of money on wars and/or military buildup, lucrative gov. contracts to a select few, etc. Heck, GW's laughing right now:

"Deficits meficits ... who cares?! I'll just pass it on to the next Dem Pres and blame it on him. (Lol!) We wanted ol' Hill in there, but we know that this 'Bama Kid will do his job of raising taxes on all you suckers out there. Yeeehhhhaaa!"

Bottom line, we're all gonna have to do a whole lot of praying over the next couple/three years. Again, regardless of who gets elected, our current mess is gonna require lots and lots of praying. BTW, did you happened to see Obama's Freudian slip the other day on the George Steph' show? Where he started talking about his Muz faith ... oops my Christian faith. Oh Georgy had to correct him. I don't know exactly why, can't pin-point it, but I get this weird feeling about Sen. Cool. He's a little too charming if you know what I mean. And the way he plays to the world, instead of just to us (American people), has me scratching my head. C'mon folks ... a trip to Europe???

May God Bless America. Please dear Lord, put the right man in the Oval Office.
