People that don't evacuate pretty much deserve to die in my opinion. Espeically when you're given a week's warning. There's no excuse for staying. Who cares if your stuff gets looted, as least you still have your life. Believe me if I lived in a high risk zone and I was told to evacuate, I would be gone that same day no questions ask. Financial situation be damned, my life is more important.

I have a hard time understanding a big news service like this can't figure out why they need a Dr. to tell you. Poor people don't have the money to go on a vacation and the pay for the lawyer to explain to the Judge why they can't pay their rent. I think they would rather let the story go to someone else, and probably should. If the actual story has something too scary for the rich newspeople with lawyers and they don't have a way of letting the public know, then they should get to work on one, not wast ink.

I live in the Florida Keys and have stayed through a number of mandatory evacuations for several reasons:

First is local, state and federal officials often over state the risk, the rhetoric doesn't match the situation and in hind sight the people always remember these are the officials that ordered the evacuation the last three times and they often evaluate the situation themselves.

The second is, the weather channel effort, having lived through nine Topical systems, 3 Topical Storms 6 Hurricanes I can state with experience the Weather Channel over does the drama associated with a topical systems and few people in the Keys listen to them. Jim Cantore is the best example of a weather channel personality that is always over the top. The Weather Channel often cries wolf and has little to no creditability with the locals, we tend to use the Internet for the facts and skip the drama of Jim Cantore and the Weather Channel.

The third is expense, it is not cheap to drive several hundred miles to a safe zone, plus I have seen a safe zones begun ground zero for the Hurricane.

Fourth, concern for property many people are worry about their house being looted when they are gone.

This being said if a true storm threatens the Keys I will evacuate but it will be based on a real threat not Weather Channel drama or Government Officials blowing over heated empty rhetoric.
