You had me going there for a minute Dahlia, then I had a good laugh. Can you imagine Palin, with her sweet voice ringing loudly, reading an opinion from the bench. They would have to issue ear plugs to everyone in the court room and hold everyone, who is laughing hysterically, in contempt of court!...........But, Dahlia, you need to be careful what you say for there are some out there will take you literally. Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity will take your article and run with it. I can hear their discussions for Palin's promotion to the bench as the best thing since sliced bread!

I think that Republicans, in light of insider knowledge about the looming financial crisis, have decided to cede the election. They do not want any of their "serious candidates" having to reside over the mess that Bush and Cheney leaving. Hence, they put forth Palin. IF by some chance they are elected (and don't thonk for a moment that serious Republicans want or expect this to happen), the serious repybs will distance themselves from the inevitable flub-up that they will make and say ''what would you expect from an old man and an inexperienced woman?"

Folks, Palin is clearly a Female version of George Bush.

She's been hand picked as someone who will play on your fears and appeal to your sense of everyday values. That is understandable, but the sad truth is McCain/Palin represent the republican party thats been taken over by short sighted crooks that really do not have the best interests of the country at heart.

McCain/Palin will push to keep sending trillions to the middle east in oil money while continuing to fight the war causing thousands of soldiers and others to die while spending $150+ billion a year. They'll also continue to enable the dollar to lose value. You have to understand the price of oil, value of the dollar, loss of US jobs, spending in Iraq and not investing in domestic energy are all connected and leading to the economic meltdown of today.

Palin believes 9/11 was caused by Iraq. Palin believes endangered species don't matter. Palin believes war with Russia is a reasonable option.

You know better. You deserve better. Make sure you listen to the truth and go beyond your fear.

    <a href="http://e-blogules.blogspot.com/2008/09/collapses-in-wall-street-and-alaska.html">The Palin Imposture :</a>
    - a "Maverick" shaking DC... with Cheney's neocon agenda and Bush's theocon agenda
    - an "independent" reaching across the aisle... but firing anybody who disagree with her
    - an agent of change... who doesn't even believe in Evolution
    - in favor of investigation... but not of subpoenas
    - ready to protect the country... but running Alaska from an unprotected Yahoo! account
    - ...
Q "Well John, don't you think it's time to accept you're not good at casting people fit for the job ?"
A "I haven't changed my mind: I think... I'll have my staff get back to you"

Lithwick grossly overestimates the average newsweek reader's level of sophistication. The comments confirm that many readers missed the tongue and cheek nature of the column. No wonder we make our voting decisions based on who "would be most fun to have a beer with." :(

put her on the supreme court? maybe, but first give her some more experience by having her be a vice president who learns how to fight with reporters and then as a president, who learns how to ... oh well, whatever her on-the-job training will teach her (and us). At least she'll have more OTJ experience, as president, than Obama, and maybe she'll be able to teach our army how to shoot from helicopters (you wrote that she can shoot wolves from helicopters).

i can't believe some of you people actually think Dahlia was being serious, have you read nothing by her before? The thing that scares me is that people think it is real, because it is not that far from the republican truth! Great job Ms. Lithwick; very scary indeed.

I shouldn't need to be familiar with an author's entire body of work to read an article. The author definitely failed to go over the top enough to convey her intended irony. Of course, I'm not blind enough not to enjoy that irony, that you can't use enough hyperbole to get people to think, well, the republican's aren't capable of that, so this must be a joke. I love that irony :).

I thought that the comment about the breast pump was over the top enough. I have never read her articles before but this was obviously "tounge in cheeck".

Don't you think that her "unyielding moral certainty, relatability and gender.....Palin has already proven that [nothing] will be a match for the force of her will" gives it away? It took me awhile, but I suppose the truth is so close to this satire in this 1984 scenario we've already got that it's too chilling to laugh about.

.. yes, my typing is terrible, and the Constitution is only 221 years old, as I recall. Be careful what you wish for ...

I completely agree. When the Supreme Court Judges get in the way of progress by making that same old tired argument about some old document called the Constitution (that is what they call it, right?), just create another Supreme Court. A Supreme Court at the whim and fancy of those who believe they know better, those with the self righteous arrogance to attempt to legislate the ???will of god???. This nation needs to return to the original ideals upon which it was created, the mandatory enforcement of fundamentalist christian values!

No ... wait ... are you sure that was what this nation was founded for?

Perhaps the United States Federal Government is not for the purpose of imposing arbitrary codes of morality distilled from some specific interpretation of a religion that worships a human as a god. Perhaps that is exactly why this nation's government was constructed in such a way as to make that sort of thing very, very difficult.

I, for one, prefer to be live under the canopy of liberty as provided in a moldy 1200 year old parchment which those who bother to read it can readily understand. It is not there for Palin or Obama or Nixon, or anyone else in Washington. The Constitution is to protect the Citizens of the United States of America (us) FROM them. The Supreme Court, for better or worse, is the gate keeper. The day we pull down that gate, we will become something else. Something much less.

Palin got a law passed in Wasilla, the only city in the state to have this law, that requires victims of rape and sexual abuse to pay for their own rape kits. Has anyone ever heard of anything this vicious?

    I like what MotherTeresa said:

Everytime I see Sarah Palin open her mouth I see her own warm, dark-brown, stinky feces come out.

Every time I see John McCain open his mouth I see warm bloody pus coming out, sliding down his lips.

Everytime I see John McCain open his mouth I see warm bloody pus coming out.

Dahlia's proposal is incredibly offensive and wrong-headed. "...neither the courts, nor precedent, nor even the Constitution itself will be a match for the force of her will." Surely the first requirement of a Supreme Court justice is following the Constitution. The last thing we need is an ideologue making it all up as she goes along.

  • Posted By: trazer @ 09/18/2008 2:51:04 AM

Dahlia is a known Obama supporter - given that Obama attended a SEXIST university (the president of this IVY league school belittled all women faculty and had to have a special post enacted to train him how to treat women), and also RACIST comments (i.e. his and Biden plan to segregate IRAQ - a plan the IRAQ president has called downright prejuidiced. Also Obama in his book said he used cocaine - a felon. Obama for Supreme Ct. so he can write the laws to get him out of trouble.

What about all the coke W. snorted along with the drunken binges for years and years. It has clearly scrambled his brain. He should be tried for that along with all his war crimes. He should be impeached, convicted and imprisoned along with the rest of his chickenhawk regime.

BIG BROTHER - THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY - DOES NOT BELIEVE THAT YOU OR I HAVE ANY RIGHTS TO PRIVACY - Broken Obama must have been behind the EMAIL GATE affair as he has not come out and called it downright wrong to break into a private email account and give out MINOR children phone numbers on the worldwide interact - an act that can have a major impact to their SAFETY. He will NOT keep your and my children safe.safe.

Democratic party the BIG BROTHER? hello we're not the party that introduced illegal wire tapping and spying. Now that's big brother.

After re-reading this, I'm positive this is a 'joke'. it's saying that from a Republican point of view she could be much more effective in the Supremem Court where she would really be able to make the crazy right-wing changes she believes in. That she wouldn't be as effective as she could be in the VP position as she would be in the Judicial position. I think it's a 'joke' meant to scare the crap out of you.

    • Posted By: soxos @ 09/18/2008 12:25:50 PM

I thought the same thing, but the author doesn't effectively let us in on the punchline. If she intended irony, she failed.

"Governor Palin understands the fundamental tediousness of constitutional checks and balances"
I should be shocked to read such a comment, but the challenges to the fundamental nature of our system of government that the Republican party have created during the past two executive administrations softens the blow. Anyone who believes constitutional checks and balances are "tedious" fails to understand that checks and balances are the only thing that keeps our system of government working. We are a nation of laws, not men; that was the genius of our forefathers. The Republican party is blindly casting these notions aside, mocking them, and thus, seeking to destroy everything about our system of government that I, for one, have ever believed. Let us insure they are stopped.
