TO:LSMaryland. Absolutely, for the most part Harvard (Ivy League) lawyers have done a wonderful job of running this country. Just look at where we are today. Your elitism is showing. They don't teach common sense at Harvard. They don't teach compassion and passion for public service. I'm thinking that what this country needs is a smart "real" person who has a fire in the belly to make this land a better place for its inhabitants, not some snob interested in embelishing him or herself with all manner of adulation and goodies. Go have a latte.

Is public service a euphemism for community organizing? You don't have to go to Harvard to use a dictionary. Go look up the word.

Guess what: You have to be a licensed attorney before you can be a judge, even a circuit judge in a dumb f town like Wasilla. Sarah isn't even qualified to hear traffic ticket controversies.

Okay, everyone who is so upset: "What matters???far more than experience" is her "unyielding moral certainty, relatability and gender.....Palin has already proven that [nothing] will be a match for the force of her will."
This is very black humor. I didn't realize it for a while either, and I was pretty shocked. But, seriously, it is tongue firmly in cheek.

    • Posted By: darcylu @ 09/17/2008 1:59:50 AM

Of course, of course, but you're not talking about reasonable people here. Your talking about masses of people who are going to think this is the best idea they have ever heard, and somehow lie and cheat their way into getting this accomplished. Two weeks ago I would have thought this was funny, now it just makes me sick, I've seen too much outrageous garbage pulling down this country in the last 8 years to trust that enough people will stand up to it anymore. "Tongue firmly in cheek" these days is way to close to "a wink and a nod".

      • Posted By: meowbaby7 @ 09/17/2008 3:26:27 AM

I hope you're not right. I know they don't have a gram of sense, but I've been in such a rage since she was announced that I was just enjoying seeing her ridiculed. I could not possibly loathe these two more, and it's really sickening that all the *** in this country buy their bullshit. I cannot believe that so many people are so stupid. That fascist freak from Alaska isn't qualified to be dog catcher.

I think I just need to chill a bit. I am so outraged that I am letting it get to me more that it normally would.

I am only human, and I have to get back to a few basics. Not this second, but later today, I will.

          • Posted By: meowbaby7 @ 09/18/2008 2:41:56 AM

I totally understand. I've been consumed for weeks with this horror show and the terrifying possibility that it could really happen. My mother was getting tired of my fury, so venting on YouTube helped, but it's hard to chill with the appalling insanity that has taken over this country. Let's hope there are enough more of us than them on election day so that even when they cheat and use their most Rovian tactics we will beat them.

What a delightfully sarcastic article. So cleverly articulated, in fact, that only the Repulican ticket would fail to miss the ironical undertones.

Interesting how so many comments take this article seriously. McCain supporters are in agreement with the face-value of the article; others are outraged by it. Every single person who reads this article, however, has to realize that if McCain is elected, someone just like Palin (who has written briefs and did go to law school) could end up on the Supreme Court and remove the decision about abortion from the individual to the government.... telling us that no abortion is legal, unless you have a disabled future baby that the state will have to financially support, in which case will have to abort it or not get any help raising him/her.

Doesn't one at least need to be an attorney to be a judge? I don't think a scenario this nightmarish could be accomplished, at least I hope not, but the way things are going is terrifying, and just about anything seems possible from these lunatics

I was pretty horrified for a while until I realized Ms. Lithwick was being darkly ironic. I really enjoyed the ridicule of Scarah, but perhaps it's a little too close to the truth to be very funny. The Republitard party is so completely demented at this point that they seem quite capable of a move that idiotic. She wouldn't get the votes for the court, but the idea of her becoming president is such a nightmare that I would rather be dead than see that happen.

Good choice. You can put lipstick on the Constitution as readily as you can on a pitbull. But then you wouldn't be able to read the Constitution.

I don't think satire like this works when the party line is so close to the attempted satirical technique, it just makes you more depressed.

I don't think satire like this works when the party line is already so close to how you are attempting to satirize it.

Maybe my computer is not working properly so I can't find page 2 of this article - the part with the punchline?

I hope you???re joking Dahlia. If not, you have no business writing for Newsweek whatsoever. I must agree that there is a deep-seeded problem with the combination of Scalia, Roberts, Alito, and Thomas on the bench. They???re all Republicans! Roberts and Alito worked directly for the Bush administration, and Thomas, when he actually does take a stance (which is rare) has sided with the Bush administration at least 90% of the time.
Now I am not suggesting that we need to pack the Supreme Court with judges that will favor the democratic party. The Supreme Court should be a place of high-minded political philosophy, not for partisan politics. Judges should not be chosen because they are going to serve one political party and/or have an agenda to overturn the decision of Roe v. Wade. Nevertheless, the current administration has been gaming the bench precisely for these reasons, and you appear to be playing right along.
???Unyielding moral certainty??? matters far less in the Supreme Court than accurate knowledge of our Constitution and the dialogue among it???s framers and interpreters. The Nazis had unyielding moral certainty. Beyond that, you honestly believe ???relatability and gender??? should be the main qualifications for choosing the next Justice of the Supreme Court? Your logic for giving Palin this position is that she is a creationist who ???dabbles??? in book banning, fires dissenters, ("likes shooting wolves from helicopters?") ???has little background in national security, health care, immigration, or foreign policy,??? and ???wants to do away with abortion and strongly opposes gay marriage???? I seriously hope you???re joking.

How I do hope this article was written tongue-in-cheek. But, I suspect not. Sarah Palin has no education in juris prudence and thus, no experience with the law, except to apply local laws for her benefit.
The Supreme Court is an old boys network because, until now, only old boys had the credentials for consideration of nomination. And Sarah Palin does not have any credentials to serve as a Supreme Court Justice, let alone serve as magistrate in rural Alaska.
Sarah Palin is a very scary propostion for either politial party. She has a documented history of manipulating party hacks to promote her, then turning on them; she has a documented history of cronyism and appointing unqualified friends to positions of responsiblity; her partisanship and ego are unyielding and self-righteous.
Sarah Palin could set US civil rights back 300 years.
When will conservatives recognize even they have more freedoms under liberalism?

You embody what is wrong with the media. Just because you say something is so, doesn't make it true. A real journalist can stick to the facts and still develop a storyline that has insight and an editorial opinion. You just lie.....Newsweek...this is garbage!
