After re-reading this, I'm positive this is a 'joke'. It's saying that from a Republican point of view she could be much more effective in the Supreme Court where she would really be able to make the crazy right-wing changes she believes in. That she wouldn't be as effective as she could be in the VP position as she would be in the Judicial position. I think it's a 'joke' meant to scare the crap out of you.

I must agree with those who insist that this article must be a joke. Insanity is not even a good enough defense for publishing this article. If this is the sort of message that the editors (whom I previously respected) believe merit attention, I am regretting that I just renewed my subscription! Interestingly. I received my issue a day later than I normally do. After hearing yesterday that Palin's popularity has very appropriately "disappeared," I have to wonder if I should even bother with the rest of this issue!

Whatever happened to the part of the constitution that says separation between church and state?

Frankly, the U.S. Constitution doesn't ... that was another Supreme Court Justice, Hugo Black. The U.S. Constitution says there shall be no stat religion, which is an entirely different thing --Mike

Well, you know, if we could change the constitution to get a third term for Bush (though I don't think even he wants that), maybe we could also get the thing about being born here changed and then Arnold could run! He'd have the Reagan thing and the maverick thing going on, plus he'c even have the actor thing. He could really show everyone who's boss!

The republican party line on this candidate defys irony. This article reads like a policy paper for the right wing.

This is a sick joke, right? If the person who wrote this is remotely serious, they need to find new employment. Maybe she could sit next to Hasselbeck on the View.

"Put Palin on the Supreme Court"... Are you kidding??? Sarah Palin is nothing more than Scalia (another gun-toting animal killer) with different body parts! God, what an awful suggestion!!!

  • Posted By: Aware! @ 09/17/2008 4:30:37 AM

Comment: In the final analysis, it is all about character, moral center, core values and listening to everyday Americans!

The elitist, left-wing Barack fakes it but Sarah is the real thing! She reinforces Senator John McCain's maverick credentials while she diminishes Obama's rhetoric to words only!

But, McCain and Palin know that reform/change is about working together to improve the way we relate in all aspects of life! It is not about the pseudo savior who contributes to your victimhood so he can meet your needs! :(

McCain/Palin will deliver authentic reform that will inspire everyday Americans to be part of the team! Servant leadership encourages teamwork! :)

    McCain/Palin 08...! :)

Too late. It isn't going to happen. You are living in the past, and true everyday Americans are moving on.

        You, sir, are an idiot.

  • Posted By: jaweidinger @ 09/17/2008 2:22:01 PM

Having now had a chance to read through some of the other comments, it appears that a proper sense of irony is sadly lacking among Newsweek's readership.

For those of us who, A) see Sarah Palin for what she really is, and B) have a developed sense of irony, Dahlia Lithwick???s suggestion that Palin be appointed to the Supreme Court provided a welcome, lighthearted moment. The fear is that her gun-toting, Bible-thumping supporters who are suddenly enamored of words like ???sexism??? and ???elitist??? will take it as a genuine endorsement.

It is amazing to me that Palin is considered unqualified to run as VP and Obama is considered qualified to run for President. Palin has experience in various branches of government; whereas Obama has virtually no practical experience highlighted by the fact that he started running for President when he arrived at the Senate. To LSMaryland's comments...Harry Truman, arguably a superb President, did not have a college education much less a law degree. Give me Palin any day of the week and send Obama back to Hawaii.

For the author to suggest that Palin would be on the Supreme Court is an insult to lawyers, including myself, who have completed extensive training to be in this profession. There are excellent reasons for the strict requiements to become a lawyer. Even though I do not share all of the justices views on the Supreme , they all are qualified to interpret the law and render a decision that will have an impact on the entire nation.

With the pick of McCain and Palin, this country has greatly lowered the standards for the highest offices in this country, the presidency and VP. The education of the candidates is a very important factor to consider in determining the most qualified candidates. Palin went to five different colleges in six years just to obtin a BS Degree in Journalism McCain attended the Naval Academy and graduated fifth from the bottom of a class of about 900 students. As compared to Obama who graduated from Columbia University for his undergraduate studies and Harvard University Law School where he graduated number 1 in his class and the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review. Biden is also a lawyer. Further, Obama and Biden both have taught Consistutionl Law, which is the foundation of this country,

Give me the Harvard trained lawyer as president.

    Independent for Obama08.

Is the author trying to write a satire here? A Swiftian satire? If so, the author needs to improve her skills and make it a but more clear -- this is just muddle - and sickingly painful.

This has to be some kind of joke. OK...I get it!!!!! Very funny. Now can we move on and discuss the REAL issues in the campaign?

Sarah...your 15 minutes of fame is up. Turn the light out before you leave.

This is the best response so far. The piece is both scary and sarcastic, but let's not run the risk of focusing so much on Sarah that she seems like an underdog who deserves sympathy. Choosing her reveals McCain's poor judgment, but he's still the top of the ticket, and his positions are at least as much of a problem as Palin's. This article points up serious issues, but let's make sure people notice what McCain actually stands for.

i can stop laughing now? i have been laughing now for the last 7 1/2 years from Saddam being told he had 48 hours to get out of town and being told about Bin Laden getting smoked out.The funny thing of all?It was the American people getting smoked out, and they accepted it.

    The author, clearly, is insane.

  • Posted By: ornurse @ 09/17/2008 12:14:38 PM

I take this entire article as "tongue in cheek". If anyone really believes the author means it then go right ahead and believe, we will all know where you stand. I think it is funny in an ironical and satiric way because look at what really is on the supreme court right now...she would fit right in. The rest of you who think(????) she is actually qualified for anything have been living in a cave.

Jesus Dahlia - are you out of your freaking mind? Why not add Jimmy Swaggart, Pat Robertson, and the head of the NRA to your list. I've seen idiots post all the time, but you take the cake.

This article was supposed to be submitted to the Onion; sorry for the confusion! I have never read anything more ludicrous in my life. Let's put more people with ideological bents on the court; yeah, and let's change the constitution to give GW another term! This writer is a fool and hopes we are the same!
