My son was diagnosed with schizophrenia at 19 and a freshman in college. Unless you have experienced this event you can not understand what it does to the entire family esp. siblings. Tou grieve for what could have been in the life of your child. You also have to be your childs advocate and fight for medical care sincew they are not insured. I contacted the pharma company and got on their assistance program. They budget funds just for this event. It is really important to get your loved one in a psychosocial program . They can function with both these modalities. My heart goes out to all who are affected by this disease.

My son has schizo affective disorder. After years of suffering, he finally got treatment and medication. Now, although he has a decent job, he has no health insurance -- the meds keep him functional. Without them, he will be a burden on the system How to get treated? Mom will have to pay -- no way can he afford it. BTW, he also has Type 1 diabetes Needs medication for that too, to stay alive. What a (no)health care system we have.

I'm glad research is being done on this vicious malady, of which my Aunt suffers. Here is a vibrant wonderfull caring person of 5 children, whom she struggled to raise after leaving her very physically abusive husband, but still maintaining a positive attitude ,resumed college when they where still small children receiving her AA degree. And then some years after the kids had grown and she'd married her best freind, this disease comes along and robs her of her own self. It's not an affliction to be taken lightly or made fun of. It's painfull and tragic and robs people of their cherished loved ones, I hope one day this malady is something people can only read about and never have another person experiance it again....

I'm glad to hear of more research of Schizophrenia, of which my Aunt suffers from. Here is a vibrant wonderfull caring person, a mother of 5 children of whom she struggled as a single parent after leaving her abusive husband , who went back to college to receive her AA Degree while they where small children to improve they're quality of life, and then when her children where grown and all struggles should have been put behind her, she's struck with this horrible illness that robbed her of her own self, not something to joke around about or be made light of. I hope someday that research can find a way to do away with this malady and no one has to suffer from it ever again..
