Not signing this bill puts the public in danger of not getting a paycheck to be able to pay bills, not getting their SS checks, not paying doctor bills, and not getting loans, etc. How simply can a person make it. . This government is shutting down while all of these Republicans and Democrats are playing politics. I think they set up a temporary relief program to last until March 2009 in case this gets worse but by that time money will stop flowing both ways.

It is common knowledge the Republican Administration is big on Deregulation. They don???t need to act innocent when this has been going on for years and they are in charge.

Both sides need to hold their noses no one likes it least of all the public and this is a game trying to get the top 1% their money ??? they don???t really care about the rest of us. Why does it take the richest of us to have a problem when the rest of us have been struggling losing jobs, health insurance and almost ½ of this country cannot afford to pay for health insurance and medicine. Other countries have better health insurance than we do and live longer.

Once money stops flowing it is hitting us and we won???t care about politics we will just want anyone who can sign to sign the bill that none of us like.

It is common knowledge that McCain is known as a deregulator. I wondered when and why it took so lon for this to come to light affter a 26 year career and eight years of his party having control.

In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future. I follow a economist named bob proctor who has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly. He perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown ,and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years Is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression. Banks in the US are going under one after the other. Country wide the largest morgage bank in the world Bear Stearns and Lehman brothers , and Merrill Lynch which are 3 out of the top 5 wall street firms. And now Fanny and Freddy which hold 50 percent of the home loans in the United States. The goverment took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. If they didn't the entire financially system would virtually shut down, the stock market would crash And we would suffer beyond what any of us have seen before The future of these companies will fall into the hands of our next president
Bush just like Mcain doesn't understand the economy.

That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it
He does not understand exactly what is broken. Its no surprise that he doesnt. The people that make up these
securities use complex math models very few people understand.
Bush and mccain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.

Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks take risks with all of our future.
Now Phil Graham is the head of mccains economic policy ,and mccain wants to make him the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time bush met with his economic advisors was in march. He either didnt realize or didnt care that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy in our lifetime.
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as bush has done mccain would be
incredibly worse because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like bush did but a tanking economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 deficit. Most of Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will do get what you have always __________

When it comes to policy bush and mccain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?

The chairman of mcains campaign recently said that people don't vote on issues

they vote on a personality composite which means. He is trying to sell you personality instead of results.
He believes people will vote against there own self interests.

Lets teach him we are smarter then that .
Hold them accountable now while it will still help
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

Do you even know who has been in charge of the House and Senate the last 2 years. I am for Obama also but it idiots like you that that make all of us look bad.

Your worrying about 2 years, how about the 8 years? Are you serious ? We all keep talking about freedom, freedom, freedom but yet no one is talking about resopnsibility. There can be freedom in the markets but it comes at a cost and that cost comes in the form of regulation. The funny thing is that your talking about 2 years, ask yourself, about how long does it take for decision made in government to actually start showing definitive and measurable results. The answer is any where between 3-6 years my friend. 3 if the plan was well planned and implemented. So please save me the dramatics of blaming the Demoncratis who have only been in power in Congress for two years.

I'm an American , but when will we Americans stop trying to run the world. These foreign countries do not hate American's as Fox news commentators would have you believe, they hate the fact that we meddle in their business when we have no right to. I was reading an article in the the Smithsonian Oct 2008 issue titled "Inside Iran's Fury". These Islamic countries want peace and democracy just like Americans and in recent history have voted for democratic leaders. But because we (Americans) did not like their democratically chosen leaders we ousted them by means of a Coupe. Now many of these countries Hate our present day president (Bush) but if they came over here and triend any funny business of telling us who should be in power in America, we wouldnt have any part of it, so what right do we have to tell them who they should like.

  • Posted By: lovejusticepeace @ 09/27/2008 9:19:24 AM

What has history taught us ?
People desire freedom and liberty more than anything else.
During almost 2000 years , the parting greeting of the Jew was 'next year in Jerusalem'.
The French people abandoned to poverty and tyranny had to storm the Bastille and get rid of an opulent monarchy . Thus was born , ' Liberty , Equality and Fraternity '
The Americans unjustly taxed and oppressed by colonial England had to resort to war after peacefully trying to make the English monarchy see sense through negotiations .
The racist , fascist. , communist Sinhala Lankans can never ever win this war .
Even if they succeed to take back some territories , the Tamil Eelam government will be setup in exile . Like the oppressed South Africans did , during the abnoxious Apartheid of the Dutch , by forming an ANC government in exile.

Anyone can say anything they want. But Fanny and Freddy are not part of the Republican money machine. Look at who gets money from them, know that they are the rock of this problem, see who wanted to change the rules and who wants people who cannot get a loan from a bank, get one from the government. Then forget it all and keep making statments like below.

brighton you sound like a fool.We need to finish our border fence and keep all illegals out of this country. All twelve million need to be marched back to the border at gun point.Americans your country is under attack.Fight back now.idiots like brighton won't be happy until America looks like a third world country.

Wow. You owe everyone an elaboration of your idea here, specifically the rationale, the benefits, how it will be implemented, ethics, etc If you are unable to provide a qualitative and quantitative answer to support your argument , then you're argument has to be dismissed as an ignorant statement and echoes why some people should not be able to vote because people say dumb stuff and will defend the dumb idea/comment anyway

There is no shortage of provable statistics that show that over 80% of the world want Barack Obama for our president. This speaks to the unspeakable 8 yrs we've had to endure under the Bush regime. Most every nation on this planet is war-weary and not looking for any further confrontations that involve destructive weaponry. It is so clear that Bush has done what we all would have said, 8 yrs ago, that was impossible. He has made us the laughing stock of the planet, our credibility was deliberately rolled under the bus in favor of the monumental hubris of a few bad men (and a few ladies, too). Although I do believe that in some respects we are still "The greatest country...etc" we are now one of the most financially indebted ones, mainly to China and India, those countries that already own the 21st century. Another of Bush's magnificent achievements is that fiscal tragedy.
I don't know who is brainwashing you McShame supporters, but I will say this: Palin is Failin', along with big bad John.
Here's something to smoke in your self-righteous pipes -- Jesus was a community organizer, Pilate was a governor.

    • Posted By: Nator56 @ 09/19/2008 3:18:59 PM

Actually, while it is true that Pontius Pilate was the Roman Governor of Judea, Jesus Christ was (and is) the living son of God.

    • Posted By: jh35180 @ 09/15/2008 5:46:39 PM

I hardly think that voting on a President, based on world opinion, is a good reason to vote for a President. I would also disagree that we are the laughing stock as you put it. I would agree that our debt to China and India is very disturbing, but I hold both parties responsible for this and I don't think that Obama has an answer for dealing with this. As far as comparing Obama to Jesus and Palin to Pilate is quite a stretch.

      • Posted By: neos @ 09/15/2008 7:12:00 PM

If you were right I could agree with you, but...
The degree to which a president is respected abroad is of course an important consideration. We live and act in isolation at our own peril. Sadly enough we have an extremely tarnished reputation abroad. The last five Repubklican president had deficit spending year after year, even when their party controlled congress. President Clinton had surpluses in his second term.

        • Posted By: rrdalton @ 09/15/2008 11:49:24 PM

The error in your position is the assumption that they want Obama as US President because they respect him. They don't, They want him as US president because they believe they can take advantage of him.

          • Posted By: neos @ 09/16/2008 10:47:22 AM

            Wrong, sorry...
I have lived in Europs for 9 of the last 13 years and from personal knowledge and conversations with friends there I can tell you that they are EAGER to reestablish a good working relationship with the American nation and its government. They see in Senator Obama a ray of light, an American of good will and solid judgement who understands the complexities of modern geopolitics. Our nose-thumbing at our natural allies has caused us nothing but trouble. Unsubstantiated xenophobia is self-defeating.

            • Posted By: jh35180 @ 09/16/2008 5:12:51 PM

Neos. I am so glad that you are a globetrotter and that you have lived in Europe. Nevertheless, I don't care if Europeans think that he is the brightest ray of sunshine, he still is not getting my vote. Common sense about how we do things isn't necessarily xenophobia.

              • Posted By: neos @ 09/16/2008 6:32:57 PM

Would you characterize the last 8 years of Bush's rule as exemplifying 'common sense?' How about this for common sense a la europeana - vote for the best and brightest candidate. While John McCain's four-star Admiral father ensured him a prized appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, his performance - 894th out of 899 cadets in his class - does not attest to diligent effort, whereas Barack Obama (from a broken home, on food stamps) won competitive academic scholarships to Harvard, which he proved himself worthy of by graduating Magna *** Laude ("With Highest Honors").  Its been a long time since any politicians of either party could talk convincingly about "The American Dream", but Barack Obama can, because he lived it.  Without handouts, family patronage, or inheritence, he pulled himself up by his bootstraps from the Chicago ghetto through his own hard work, enterprise, and initiative to become President of the Harvard Law Review, one of the most prestigious scholarly legal journals in the country.  Which President is more likely to make a difference in the lives of people, and motivate them with initiative to best achieve their individual God-given potential?
                p.s. not a globetrotter, a soldier.

We had a surplus because Clinton revealed himself to be a moderate Democrat after he was elected - he ended welfare and balanced the budget because we had a Republican majority in the Congress. This is how government is supposed to function in our two party system. With Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid running the Congress and an ultra liberal like Obama in the Oval office however, it is highly unlikely we will see a repeat of the Clinton years.

If you were right I could agree with you, but...
We had surpluses because President Clinton shrunk the government, we Americans responsibly payed taxes, and .the economy was strong
Republican rule has brought increased government spending, irresponsible tax cuts and economic ruin.
President Obama has promised to end the years of Republican 'borrow and spend'. restore Clinton era tax levels, and restore governmental regulation to financial industries gone mad. Eight years of misrule is enough - we must bring back responsible government.

"Rhetoric about transcendent threats and mortal dangers grips the imagination of the American people. " It's also a very useful politcal weapon that the Republican party has been using to its advantage for generations. The Republicans need fear to succeed politically. Fear of communist hordes, fear of Chinese "militarism", fear of black people, now fear of wild-eyed brown-skinned Muslims. Therefore, Republicans will continue to exploit and generate fear. It works.

    • Posted By: jh35180 @ 09/15/2008 5:41:29 PM

To be fair, there were many dems who exploited fear as well. JFK did it with the old Soviet Union and nearly got us into a nuclear war. LBJ lied to the Americans about the Gulf of Tonkin and it cost 58,000 Americans their lives. So to pretend that exploiting our fears is only reserved to Republicans smacks of hypocrisy.

      • Posted By: Nator56 @ 09/19/2008 3:13:37 PM

I concur, jh; Fear-mongering is a tactic used by leaders of ALL stripes to gain consensus. The Far Left says "Fear the rich Capitalist exploiters who only look to themselves" - The Far Right says "Fear the Godless perverts who want to take your hard-earned wealth and use it to corrupt your children". I am disheartened by the fact that so few folks seem to prefer rational discourse over emotional rhetoric. <Sigh>

The trumped up threat of religious extremism is essential in order to create fear which drives this agenda. While such extremism is on the rise, being fomented by US intervention, the larger threat of the supposed inevitable "Clash of Civilizations" between Islamo-Fascism and Christianity is not a reality, but something to provide intellectual fodder for the cause.

The judgment that the world terrorism is basically a problem with Islam is simply foolness. Experts note that even al Qaida is too loose to be a real network, while the great majority of the world's dissidents are not allied with that group or any other international "group". Since outside of Iraq and Afghanistan where the Americans are leading illegal wars--and Palestine-where the Israelis with American help are ethnically cleansing the Palestinian people-most of the world's terrorism occurs in non-Muslim countries. One must be care to be unfortunate echo of the present administration contrivance of a clash of civilizations.

Jim Lobe gives a particularly cogent answer to David Horowitz's Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week, as well as the aggressive rhetoric of other neo-conservatives, such as Frank Gaffney and Norman Podhoretz. He starts by quoting Harlan Ullman, one of the few "realists" who writes for the pro-Bush Washington Times who takes exception to the title and the concept of "Islamo-Fascism."

"The article points out the many tactical and strategic downsides to the use of the expression in connection to the 'global war on terror'. 'It is clear that the neo-conservative advocates of Islamo-fascism wanted to link radical Islam with the Nazis and Hitlerian (though not Italian or Japanese) fascism and of course the image of a latter-day nuclear or biological holocaust,' writes Ullman... not only is the analogy false, but, 'any smart strategy [to deal with the threat posed by radical Islam] must be based ?on dividing and conquering rather than lumping all the villains as Islamo-fascists.'" Good point. The neocons focus on painting all Muslims with a broad brush is evidence they intend to inflame tensions rather than lessen them.

Yes your're right that the world is not so dark, but the glasses that the americans are using to look at the world is so dark. So, I think it is time to change the glasses before it gets too late.

Fareed is right on. Fear based foreign policy leads to lots of missteps. Obama got it right. America is at its best when we play it smart and calm. Disagree with Wiseman of Ethiopia. We American tax payors have every right to hold goverments accountable when we financially support them with our tax dollars. The current undemocratic regime of Ethiopia terrorizes its own people and denies its people God-given democratic rights. Mr. Feingold's Ethiopia Human Rights Act attempts to hold the undemocratic government of Ethiopia accountable for the foreign aid America provides to Ethiopia. I think America should continue to hold receipients of foreign aid accountable. This is a smart US foreign policy.
