This is a puff piece to help Obama's sagging polls - nothing more. This is "objective" journalism? You can read both their minds and conclude that Obama's is better? You should take your act on the road.

Sorry for the inappropiate word at the end of this link, but watch and listen to the video and see why an Obama lead US is just asking for another attack. Be afraid...
The biggest threat on the horizon is a nuclear armed Iran and Zakaria completely ignores it. Obama naively thinks talk will solve it. McCain correctly understands that the only thing worse than an attack on Iran is a nuclear armed Iran. Only the credible threat of force against Iran will give diplomacy any chance of success.
The author of this article exposes his bias throughout this article. This leftist screed is barren of intellectual honesty or even basic knowledge of current history. Reagan was correct in his posture with Russia, the left was dead wrong! Stating that the Iraq war was an unprovoked invasion of a nation is completely disingenuous. Iraq signed a surrender agreement with the US and it's allies then for more than 10 years broke every agreement, supported Palistinian terrorism and threatened to attack and help others attack the US while a democratic administration ignored the coming storm. The authors mirage of Obama as optimistic is laughable as well. I truly believe that Obama has no clue what he's talking about when it come to foreign policy. He lives in a leftist dream world where Europe Asia and the ME will bow at his feet the way the left and the media has. Yet talks as Clinton, Kerry, Gore and all Dem presidential nominees have over the past 20 years as though the US is in dire straits and can't possibly make it another eight years if he is not elected. Keep it up though it is McCain win. We rubes out in flyover land are smarter than you think and are not susceptible to condescending, arrogant, elitist media and professors telling us what we should think.
From a former fighter pilot and Navy veteran of the cold war, Gulf War I (aka Desert Storm), and the post-cold war modern era of terrorist factions: An old saying - as true today as ever - is that COMPLACENCY KILLS. The same complacency that was woven through the Clinton administration re: OBL. All the signs were there, but we (or rather 'they - the Clinton group, et al) were not really paying attention. Just because you don't make an issue of something, does not mean that 'something' goes away. Re: Obama - recall the facts that brought us into the Cuban Missile Crisis early in the Kennedy administration. It is well documented that Nikita Khrushchev pushed forward in deployment of nuclear missiles into Cuba based on his previous meeting (and first face-to-face with JFK); he surmised that JFK was not a strong leader - essentially a paper tiger. From that conclusion, Khrushchev pushed forward with the attempted deployment. We were extremely fortunate that such a small incident did not thrust us into a nuclear war with the USSR. In that world the Soviets were predictable (meaning - they were not hell bent on sacrificing themselves to achieve some higher state religious being), we knew it was a very strategic chess game. Fast forward to the world of today: All bets are off. We now DO deal with real evil out there that, whatever reasons logical- and often illogical- to most Americans -- an evil that will do whatever they can to destroy our way of life. This is highly UNpredictable. Just ignoring it - or possibly worse - appeasing it by often blaming 'ourselves' - will in no way make that evil, or threat of evil, go away. In fact, acting in this manner will only embolden that evil. Don't think for one tiny second that having a very strong defense, and, most importantly, having the stomach to use that defense, does not signal a clear message to those which wish to undermine us or do us harm. It is no coincidence the majority of the Middle East would prefer Obama - they would much prefer to manipulate a green-behind-the-ears junior senator in 'feel good politics' that a steel-spined ex-warrior that truly knows the worst of evil. One final thought: Whenever real evil has surfaced to threaten free societies in this modern world, just where do these societies continue to turn for help?
I do not think you accurately portrayed Senator McCain's world view. He detests war and is not the war mongering man you portray him to be. He is realistic about the real threats in the world, and yes, he wants to keep America safe. He believes in diplomatic efforts first, however, and you do not credit him for this principled, disciplined world view of foreign affairs. Obama is the weaker link in foreign policy, as evidenced by his response to the Russia/Georgia conflict and failure to support the surge.
Zakaria says, "America's role, for Obama, is to restore its military strength, fight Al Qaeda and its ilk, and deter rogue regimes like Iran." This is not true. Obama has repeatedly stated he will cut the military budget including research for new weaponry.

Mr. Zaharia thank you for your excellent article. What America projects to the rest of the world in the last 8 years is fear and war mongering which has given the rest of the world the "jidders". We all share this planet. Unfortunately here in America is a country divided in two based on several things that are happening in the electoral popuation. Increased poverty and the changing of the old guard, and a browning of America.

Gov. Palin to Congress: "Thanks but not thanks on that bridge to nowhere. If Alaskans wanted a bridge, we'd build it ourselves."
AMERICANS TO OBAMA: "THANKS BUT NO THANKS ON THAT SPEECH TO NOWHERE. IF AMERICANS WANTED A SPEECH, WE'D WRITE IT OURSELVES."
The Russians are flush with oil revenue and mistake this for long tem strength so they are ready to revisit Tsarist imperialism.Naturally the liberal talking heads and their Golden Candidate can't figure this out. Your theories were discredited in Cold War I
"The reality, of course, was that when neoconservatives were arguing that the U.S.S.R. was about to conquer the world, it was on the verge of total collapse." Isn't this a bit like saying that we wasted all that money and all those people getting rid of Saddam when he was going to crawl into his spider hole and then hang himself anyway?
You can have you nice a cozy view of the world but remember, it was Kennedy that sent 'advisors' to Vietnam, and it was Nixon that ended our involvement. It was Reagan who had a great hand in ending the Cold War. And if Clinton would???ve taken more action against OBL in the 90's he could???ve prevented 9/11. Remember all of the attacks during the 90's...The Cole, US Embassy's, Cobar Towers, first bombing of WTC. And 9/11 happened in the early months of the Bush Presidency. So you just put your head in the ground and think the world is safe and I will be out here defending America. Yeah deaths from wars and terrorism have dropped because democracies don't fight democracies and we have been on the offensive. Vote for Obama if you dare junior Senator leading us or a seasoned Senator that happens to be a war hero.

Our security and our peace is not going to be affected daily by the foreign countries of
India and China. Our Nation's financial strength will be. Despite their non democatric
system, these two countries are experiencing amazing economic growth and stability.
Why? Perhaps they see the importance of not emotionalizing the economic system.
For Fareed Zakaria to weigh in on the matter in this way shows how naive he is when it comes to foreign policy. The continued focus on a dangerous world has, in fact, allowed America to make it considerably less so in certain respects. Nonetheless, the challenges that lie ahead are different from those that we faced in the past, and the rise of Islamic-terrorism is a very serious and ongoing threat that warrants considerably more attention than Zakaria is willing to acknowledge. The Soviet Union did not collapse without important pressure and competition from the West ("Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall"), and to suggest otherwise reveals Zakaria's naive view of even recent history. Thank God he is a commentator and not a political leader.
It was thinking like Fareed's that led the Clinton admin to gut the CIA and the military and generally treat anything related to defense or intelligence like a redheaded stepchild. Perhaps had he not hamstrung our our ability to gather information on dangerous opponents, we could have done something about 9/11 or we might have had a different understanding of Iraq's WMD status. Certainly, after five years of a low level conflict, we can see that we should have kept the 500,000 military personnel that Clinton eliminated. No, Fareed, neither you or the Democrats have a realistic world view on these matters.
The foreign policy since the end of WW II hinged on the idea some one is always out to get us. For at least five decades we were the only one with the Soviet Union a distant second. Now the Soviet Union has converted back to just Russia with an eye on recovering its past glories and territories. My view differs from both McCain and Obama in that the future is not external threats to the United States but the instability inherent in rapidly growing but unevenly developing economies. How long will it be become the havenots of India, China, Brazil and other fast growing economies demand their share. As for the current ???Islamic??? I would suggest that the problem will continue as the Islamic population is dragged into the modern world weather it likes it or not. The United States would do better to get out of its way as traditionalist try to hold back the tide o change.
It is only prophets of doom and gloom that make us feel that world might have fallen apart if they would have not been around. We have heard quite a bit of this 'mantra" and it is time for change, and change in all aspects of life including in thought-process. It is time to say good-bye to fear-mongers, and have a fresh look at things. We need a person of vision and not someone from a bridge to nowhere. "Thanks but NO Thanks." DC can be overwhelming for a small town mayor. So just stay in Alaska, have couple more babies, support life, and all life including endangered species.
