k@chicago, following with party lies, I mean lines... Have you even read the bill. It was not Obama's, did not call for sex ed for K12, but instead was aimed at protecting children from inapropriate touching.
    You guy's have no shame.

Comment: RE: sex education. I believe in sex education in school; but but not in K-1st grade, it should be left to the parents to decide how much is too much. Knowledge is power, true... where does one draw the line on how much the gov't will decide for us? Children have the rest of their lives in this world, why rob them of their innocence when we don't have too? I've read the bill, and it absolutely does not seem age appropriate.

do you realize that most children who are touched molested ,,its done by a family member ,,you want them to be the one who teaches them what is right or wrong when there touched ? 8 out of 100 boys and a higher stat for girls that are molested every day in our country DEMANDS our atention ..And the stats are not getting better but worse . Some people like to hide there head in the sand pretend it doesnt happen ,,iI know i am one of those girls ,,i told my mom ,she sided with the family member not me . At 10 i had to stop it my self .

I am sorry that you had to endure such horrors, but you are right. I have worked at an elementary school and I can tell you for a fact that she is telling the truth, it shouldn't be taken so lightly as frightening as that may sound.

McCain is said to be a war hero. I thought 'hero' was defined as someone who saved his comrades through an act of bravery. I don't see how McCain's POW time in a lost war saved anyone. Perhaps this is the more accurate description: 'In the plays of Shakespeare, the tragic hero is always a noble man who enjoys some status and prosperity in society but possesses some moral weakness or flaw which leads to his downfall. External circumstances such as fate also play a part in the hero's fall. Evil agents often act upon the hero and the forces of good, causing the hero to make wrong decisions.' gordongrams@live.com

McCain is a hero jack-a**, ask any of the people that were there with him and they will tell you the same. He suffered and endured a great deal of pain and misery when he didn't have to.A lot of those other guys have all said that he was an inspiration and kept a lot of them from falling apart during the worst possible times. Since this has nothing to with the issue at hand , all I have to say to you is blow it out your a** with all that garbage you are spewing.

Sorry but Obama & biden are over qualified I will have to pass. LOL Actually, you are the first one to make some sense. I will acually keep that in mind good point.

  • Posted By: Argee @ 09/14/2008 3:53:31 PM

Very bluntly, McCain has run a dishonorable campaign, one filled with lies, half-lies, personal assaults, and self-pity. To win, he has traded his decency and his honor.. He deserves to lose, and he will.

    • Posted By: edjones65 @ 09/15/2008 8:33:40 PM

Oh and Obama hasn't, he one of the smoothest talkers I have ever heard.

i respected this guy because based on his hairline, it looked like he had experience. but when i saw him on msnbc he was decimated by the host and he was unable to defend his leftist propaganda which is all i ever see from him nowadasy. every now and then he tries to sneak in a positive john mccain memory to show some semblance of objectivity but his bias reeks

LOL..now thats funny, scary because so many people are listening to him, but funny.

Whatever, Alter. What I'm truly worried about is the collapse of trust of the American people in its news media. It has now become clear to all that so many great news organizations are irredeemably biased, as your article indicates! That is a crisis no amount of government money may address - and it indicates terrible times ahead for American democracy. Have Bush and the Patriot Act damaged the Republic?... Maybe, but, if so, that is easy do address and revert, by statute. The collapse of press credibility is much more damaging, and even biased journalists such as yourself should be greatly worried, whether or not your favored candidate wins in November.

    • Posted By: nate31 @ 09/15/2008 8:34:41 AM

I'm a little confused. You are more worried about the media than you are of a blatant violation of the Constitution and our rights as citizens. You make a great Republican! Keep your head in the sand, that is what the party demands! Good sheep

      • Posted By: edjones65 @ 09/15/2008 7:11:54 PM

I guess you would make a... well actually I do not care what you think or believe in since your head is buried somewhere else. There is a major problem with the media! Since you follow them so blindly I think you fit right in "lamb chop". A little confused huh.. well thats a shocker.

  • Posted By: silasporter @ 09/15/2008 6:36:33 PM

Sometimes, Republicans, the truth is just the truth. It might seem biased or liberal. You might think the journalist is betraying his own objectivity. But maybe, just maybe, he's calling it as he sees it. I mean if every member of the media (which has much, much more genuine, behind-the-scenes contact with the candidates than any of us do) seems to prefer Obama, maybe that should tell you something. Maybe these guys, who have studied records, interviewed Senatorial colleagues, followed the campaigns as objectively as possible, just know that Obama would be a better president. Do you think that's possible? I mean you can't keep shooting the messenger for criticizing McCain. Eventually, you have acknowledge that McCain is the one lying about his record, his intentions and those of his opponent and shoot McCain (figuratively speaking).

Sounds like an Obama campaign ad to me.

  • Posted By: talldrink @ 09/15/2008 1:56:26 PM

I wish you were on ALL the news channels, so that the truth can finally be told. You tell it straight, for both sides and the truth just rings through. Thank you.

Clinton isn't the subject here, McCain is running for president now. Maybe the author did indeed write about Clinton having a temper WHEN HE WAS president. Why don't you email him and ask? Regardless, that's not the topic at hand- McCain's hot-headedness is, along w/ his psych profile that the Pentagon will never release.

Give it a rest Alter. There is no ''cleanup''of weapons in the former Soviet Union occurring. You are living in a partisan dream world divorced from reality. They are proliferating to an incredible degree, especially from Belarus.[here, the new Soviets, under a trade agreement between themselves and Iran, send conventional arms and nuclear power plant assistance to Iran which in turn sends back machine and automobile technology]. Now we find through a new BBC investigation, that it is Russian-made small arms that are ending up in the hands of the Taliban, being funneled through Iran. As they are being used to kill Americans Alter, your Obaman attempt to stop this flow is hardly a model of ''success''.
Next,we visit instances of police brutality in Chicago during the time of Obamas tenure and how these, according to Alter, have ''all but ended''.
According to the Chicago lawfirm of MELMAN and Associates,on July 28,2008[where a quadreplegic man was beaten by Chicago police], there have been 10,000 instances of complaints for police ''assault and battery''occurring in jails, holding facilties, private and public areas from 2002-present. Not much ''improvement''here either Alter. Further,it has been noted by AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL,that Chicagos police force is the most militarized in America, with military assault weaponry and armored vehicles, and their latest meeting to discuss hate crimes legislation blasts the Chicago police department for a long history of ''brutality aimed at gays''.

If Jonathan Alter is truly concerned about temperament and guys losing their cool as President, did he ever bring this up while Bill Clinton was in office?

Clinton is renowned for his short fuse and temper tantrums. George Stephanopolous has written about this, as have others in the Clinton White House.

Strange that Alter and Newsweek feel that it didn't affect the Clinton administration at all...not to mention the sex addiction.

This writer is by far the most biased writer in journalism today...

Let's see, Jonathan Alter, a supposed political expert, could find only two old examples of McCain doing anything bipartisan. How about McCain-Feingold -- I don't like the bill, but I have to admit it was bipartisan. And what about the Gang of 14 that unlocked partisan gridlock on Supreme Court appointees -- something Obama refused to join? And that's only off the top of my head. Alter chose to ignore these, because it would not support his effort to help his candidate, Obama.

    • Posted By: clmayfield @ 09/15/2008 12:44:20 PM

      Alan,

Jonathon did mention McCain Feingold in the article, giving credit where credit is due. However, I think he was trying to make an argument that Obama has a higher win rate with getting major laws passed. My counter argument is that Obama has successfully passed legislation (mostly in Illinois) by taking on issues in which there is already wide agreement. McCain has taken on more contraversial issues in which the parties disagree and tried to create a consensus. In the case of McCain-Kennedy and McCain-Lieberman, those bills ultimately did not pass. Alter than goes on to imply that these contraversial bills did not pass because McCain has a temper and Obama has had legislative success because he has a cool head. Of course, Alter makes it difficult to argue with him on the last points because he uses unattributed sources and personal knowledge to bear them out.

I don't know about McCain's temperment. The only evidence that I can use is the public record, and I beleive that the record speaks pretty clearly. It was not McCain's temper... or anything that McCain did... that caused McCain-Kennedy to fail. There was simply wide and organized opposition to that bill. Similarly, McCain-Lieberman had issues because Republicans were hanging their hats on party dogma. Maybe McCain could have worked harder to make that reality, I don't know. All I know is that Obama has not attempted anything bordering on those three peices of legislation. So to say that Obama has the edge on passing bipartisan legislation here is, in my opinion, difficult to argue.

    REPUBLICANS = ANGER

  • Posted By: vena45 @ 09/14/2008 7:07:25 PM

It's sad to see that America are still blind sided by the Republican's manipulative way of doing dirty politic. If thats the way people want is another third term under Bush policy then I have no sympathy for those people whatsoever. Just don't go complaining again how bad our economy is increasing when in fact you and everyone else who were in support of McCain/Palin help put the rest of the country in that position if those two get elected. Don't go crying your eyes out when all that you have worked so hard for goes down the drain when McCain/Palin flip this country upside down. If you don't beleive it, you will very well see it for yourself.

    • Posted By: hsweet61 @ 09/15/2008 9:54:03 AM

Lieberman is no criterion on whieh to base your argument. He's a turncoat and is only looking out for himself as is mcCain. McCain showed a lack of patriotism when he foister Sara Palin on the American public as a candidate for Vice-President. He puts his election before his so-called patriotism "Apres moi le Deluge" as a French King of infamy once stated. As long as McCain realizes his obsession to become President, his country be damned!

  • Posted By: hsweet61 @ 09/15/2008 9:42:41 AM

Than you for offering Jonathan Alter's views. He's right on target. Unlike MSNBC Newsweek weldcomes comments. If I knew how to reach that despicable network who were stupid enough to take Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann off the air, I'd let them have it! I subscribe to Newsweek but don't receive it until late on Tuesdays. CNN d9d something equally stupid when they took Aaron Brown off the air!! Helen Sweet

America, do we really want a hot-head with his finger on the button? The Office of the President is a job for an equanimous individual.

Your response is indicative of Rove's brainwashing. Not only has Rove called, McCain out as being what you're trying to put on Axelrod and Co. but again another example of our educational system and your personal immaturity. Grow, because you may be grown but never grew to think beyond what Rove & Co tells you.

    Bfid
Your response an armchair pyscho babble of Obama is astonishing. You're an obvious graduate of Speculative and Wrong University, and comprehension of what is of McCain's temper totally went over your head. As a matter of fact the title of this article didn't even compute. Dang - go to school. Plenty of remedial classes still open and available. Take advantage of it while you can!

CORRECTION: In reference to Reiser's article should read McCain's bullying not "buyying" as its a typo error. The article was so funny as well. Who would've thunk it a comedian doing a better job than a journalist. Another fine example of our educational system and media's greed!

  • Posted By: carbar @ 09/15/2008 6:44:59 AM

You're so on point w/ this article, and wished other journalist would point out facts.
The media's disservice to the American public lipstick on pigs, etc should be hung for its greed in sensationalism and profits via ratings.

So glad somebody out there is being level headed in reporting, and the best sum of the race was written by comedian, Paul Raiser to date. His article on McCain's buyying was profound and funny but most imprtant -- TRUE
