Considering Republican Presidents have appointed 7 of the current 9 Supreme Court Justices, 5 of the last 7 Presidents have been Republicans, and until 2 years ago, controlled both houses of congress, I understand why Michigan voters feel the Republican Party represents their interests. With all the prosperity the Republicans have brought to Michigan and Ohio for that matter, I don't blame them for sticking with what they see as the party that represents their values. Personally, I drive an overpriced German car and made just under 100K in salary last year. Even though my heart is with the Democrats, I do better financially under the Republicans (liberal east coast "elitist" with a Masters Degree). I offer a heart-felt good luck to the citizens who continue to believe the Republicans have their interest at heart. In spite of all evidence to the contrary, you continue to vote Republican under a belief they share your values. I guess when the last factory has closed, home repossessed, bank failed,...., no I take that back. You will still vote Republican.

Sarah Palin is a strong woman who has actually CHANGED Alaska, Actual REFORM. She gets my vote.

Here are a few more thoughts: As G. Gutfeld said, SO how can one person create so much bile among folks who claim to be the most tolerant in the universe? I mean, liberals are the good people: They're open-minded, caring and of course, fair.

But somehow, a Republican lady in her 40s is exempt from this treatment. Perhaps, she truly is the devil in a dress, a ghoul that eats children and pollutes the planet and possibly beats Barack Obama, the patron saint of every customer buying wheat germ in bulk at GNC.

But I know the real reason why every single elitist media type is terrified of her. They've never met her. And by "her," I don't mean Sarah Palin. I mean "her", an actual normal woman with a bunch of kids, an average husband and no desire to watch "The L Word."

She's scary to these folks the way Wal-Mart is scary to them: Both are alien to someone who blogs about their chakras. They won't go there, because they've never been there.

To them, hating Sarah Palin is a symptom of larger bigotry against the rest of us, the normal. If they saw her at a party, they would wonder how she got in. She's the anti-Obama, the anti-New York Times, the anti-everything that Tim Robbins loves, which is why I love her ??? and you should too

What does it take to get people who call themselves journalists to tell the whole story. Wasilla's high school was termed a "dropout factory" in a Johns Hopkins study conducted two years after Palin stepped down as mayor. To earn the coveted title, they had to have 60 percent or fewer of their freshmen survive to graduate as seniors. The police chief she hired charged rape victims $300-$1200 for the rape kits used to conduct the medical exams needed to collect evidence for prosecution of the perps. The Mat-Su Valley, where Wasilla is the largest town, is the meth capital of Alaska--last year police found 42 meth labs in the area, and the calls to children's services in Wasilla about meth labs account for 40 percent of the total calls received every month. Does this sound like a town that you'd want to live in? And what did Palin do about it? She built a sports complex. And here's the true story about it--which Ms Coyne conveniently omitted in her story.

So her son could play hockey, Palin pushed for a $15 million sports complex in Wasilla. But her administration dragged its feet for months on purchasing the parcel of land the town wanted to build on from The Nature Conservancy, which owned it. So a Fairbanks investor bought the land instead. The town sued, claiming they had a handshake deal, and Palin pushed through a sales tax increase and a $14.7 million bond issue to finance the project. Believing they would win their suit, Palin???s administration began to construct roads and install utilities.
But the federal court judge ruled that the property belonged to its purchaser because the town never signed the papers. After Palin left the mayor???s office, the town tried to take the land through eminent domain, but were ordered by an arbitrator to pay $836,000 for property Palin could have purchased for $126,000 had she acted promptly; and they had to pay $336,000 in interest. The land owner has appealed, asking for hundreds of thousands more. Wasilla???s own legal bill has come to $250,000 to date; the entire process has taken 10 years of litigation and is still not concluded. Meanwhile the sports complex, built by an ally of Palin???s, has not proven to be the money-making enterprise she promised, and the town is paying for it with higher taxes and service cutbacks.

The article is interesting in the fact it points out Palins vision or the lack of it.
Zoning laws while there is always some to protest loudly, do in fact greatly improve the quality of life in any community.
With out them it is possible even likely you could build your dream house only to have some on build a tire shop. Service station or even a junk yard next door.
Mexico lacks zoning enforcement and anyone who has been to Tijuana or even Mexico City knows what that means.
Palin must have missed that on her visit to Mexico, These Republicans are going to turn this country into a third world look alike yet.

Pallisor: No candidate (certainly not in this election) can claim any executive experience (both are legislators) and in any case, the position of President of the US is so much different than anything else that we should just consider who has the apparent capability to do so. Ms. Palin, is not that kind of person. If looking at the Russian coast counts as foreign affairs experience, any neighbor living across the street from a hospital can be truste to do brain surgery.

I'm sure Palin is a fine Alaskan governor, however she does not have the suffient experience or education to hold the VP position. I find it disturbing that Palin continues to take shots at Obma, a person that is far more educated and eloquent than her. America needs a sophisticated leader that can understand our problems and provide balanced solutions.

    • Posted By: Pallisor @ 09/14/2008 8:32:28 PM

And I could care less about Obama's "eloquence". That and five dollars will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

    • Posted By: Pallisor @ 09/14/2008 8:30:34 PM

It bears worth repeating... If you think Obama is qualified for President, then it stands to reason that Palin, with similar experience, is qualified for Vice President. In the unlikely event that Palin should become President early in McCain's term, she would do what Obama has done... choose a VP with more experience than she has.

I notice that no one is denying the main points of the article. Could they be true. As always we find it easier to attack the media for reporting inconvenient truths we cannot defend than to defend the people we so admire.

Besmirch is certainly an excellent word for this article. The 2008 election campaign will provide material for many years in many classrooms to demonstrate the misognist press and their unfairness towards the women in this election. The election will also tell the story of how the Democratic party lost their women voters.

Why have the media chosen to ignore the fact that NObama's resume is far slimmer than Sarah Palins?
Why have the media chosen to ignore NObama's so-called community work?

Youtube presented Pastor Wright, NObama's shady real estate deals, NObama's lack of judgement and his "present" votes, and now the media are attacking Sarah Palin while giving NObama advice on how to win this election,

What a shame that Newsweek has to besmirch a fine little community in an attempt to advance their anti Sarah Palin political agenda. I'm a Californian who spent 3 or 4 days in Wasilla in the summer of 2007 and found it to be a very nice place with wonderful people. Sure, there are some areas along the Parks Highway that are not the prettiest but there are also lots of areas with new subdivisions on large wooded lots with expensive homes. Every community has some problems and if that's all you're looking for you can find it. I can assure all of you who've never been to Wasilla that this article is rife with exaggerations and negative distortions meant solely to taint Sarah Palin. It's no wonder that Middle America has little tolerance for the left leaning media and the condescending limousine liberals.

"She told a reporter in 1996, after winning her race for mayor, that the "turning point in my life" was winning a high-school basketball game." It was only the state championship game in a state where sports for women aren't exactly plentiful. Amanda Coyne obviously has an axe to grind, and shame on Newsweek running such a biased piece.

As an Angeleno, who is constantly trashed by the likes of Sarah Palin, for living in some sort of Sodom and Gomorra, I appreciate Ms. Coyne???s revelation that Alaska is ??? consistently in the top 10 of the nation's most violent per capita, Wasilla has among the highest per capita violent- and property-crime rates in Alaska.???

However, she should have interviewed Anne Kilkenny, a life-long Wasilla resident, who circulated an email about her first-hand knowledge of Sarah Palin
Since Kilkenny has attended city council meetings very regularly, Kilkenny notes that during Palin???s tenure as mayor ??? most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.??? (Quote from Kilkenny???s email.)

In addition, according to Kilkenny, ???During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. ??? Kilkenny also notices that Palin cut ???progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefitted large corporate property owners way more than they benefitted residents.???
When Palin tooik over, the city with zero debt, but left it $22 dollars in debt.
In addition, instead of being a maverick, Palin hired a lobbyist closely connected with disgraced Senator Ted Stevens to lobby for $ 27 million of federal earmarks. According to Kilkenny, instead of using these funds to build a much-needed sewage treatment planet, she spent $1 million for a park and about $15 million for a multi-use sports complex. Kilkenny also notes that, ???While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her
    office redecorated more than once.???
For a recent article that I read in the Los Angeles Times (I think it was September 12), when Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla, rape victims were billed $ 300 to $ 1200 for rape treatment kits. Wasilla had the was the only town in Alaska to do such a thing. Sarah Palin did not end this practice. The state legislature did in the year 2000.
McCain brags about being a straight talking Maverick. However, from the evidence I keep getting, we are getting everything but straight talk, especially about Palin. Of course, her hard-core followers will insist that everything I???ve revealed here is not true, but then Evita???s followers idolized her. For real, there wasn???t a Fascist dictator Evita didn???t like: Hitler, Franco, Musolini, they were all welcome in Argentina. So were ex-Nazi war criminals. While the crowds were mesmerized by something like ???Don???t cry for me Argentina??? she and her husband Juan Peron set up a dictator ship that robbed the country blind.

Newsweek reports that the trooper Wooten had once been the subject of a court-imposed domestic-violence protection order. Newsweek further reports that a court filing by Wooten's lawyer indicates that within months of being issued, the violence protection order was dismissed.

There is no language in the federal criminal statute Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban that states or provides that Alaskan State Troopers are exempt from its provisions. Anyone including State Troopers are guilty of a federal felony punishable by five years in prison and a $100,000 fine for simple mere possession of a firearm if they are subject to an ordinary protective order for domestic violence. Importantly the reports state that the estranged spouse filed for divorce and a domestic violence protective order on April 11, 2005 against the State Trooper. Newsweek reports that a protective order had been issued for a period. In most cases protective orders are customarily issued. Under new federal law, anyone subject to a protective order or convicted of misdemeanor domestic assault or felony assault is subject to a ban on possession or use of a handgun for a minimum of five years or at least to the end of the protective order. Some have argued that the ban is forever even after the protective order expires. The Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban is a federal law that applies to everyone including police officers and servicemen and servicewoman. Anyone in the military is subject to a discharge if a protective order is issued against them. It is a felony to violate the federal law Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban and the penalty is five years in prison. Every day that the trooper wore his sidearm or rode in his patrol car with a shotgun in the trunk, he was committing a felony and violating the federal law. If a protective order was issued and the trooper became subject to the order, the trooper should have been ineligible to be a State law enforcement officer and it would have been a slam dunk to terminate him. The State Police Commissioner should have been aware of this law and should have terminated the brother-in-law without being asked. The State Commissioner failure to uphold the federal law should have been enough grounds for his own termination.

One thing the article doesn't mention is that Palin fired the director of the Wasilla Historical Society when she became mayor, slashed its budget, and told the four other employees that they could decide which of them should be fired (they all quit in solidarity). Instead of saving the money for the people of Wasilla, Palin kept it to use for a new position, her own deputy. A family friend of ours who is from the Wasilla area says that planning in the town is so poor that houses burn to the ground while the fire department searches for the address.
