This is crazy, why are people not doing for them selves. If this were the 1900's would people, that built our future be asking the government to bail them out: I think not.. They just pulled them selves up by there boot straps and went on. Although I do agree that our tax dollars are not being spent well, I don't think we should be bailing out private home owners, that is what insurance is for.. If you stayed when you were told to leave you should pay for your own recovery, instead of being a burden on the rest of the tax payers once again, not to mention the peril you put some one else in to save your sorry butt. Revolt is near, it might be over your charmed life on the coast of Texas or the fish bowl of LA enough is enough, buy the proper amount of insurance and take care of your selves, It is not every one else's job to take care of you. I have lost every thing I owned....are you going to help me. I think not.

Until you have gone through something like this, you really cannot sit back and judge other people for what they are or are not doing. The situation in this city and the surrounding cities is horrible, we have all been basically shut down. Grocery stores are just now getting food back on the shelves, and don't even talk about gas! I will tell you though, people ARE helping themselves, the only thing they CANNOT do is flip the switch or hang the wires or put up the downed poles in order to get their electricity back. As far as their own homes, people are doing for themselves and coming together as communities, I'm proud of the way all of the hard hit cities/towns are coming along. Maybe try being neighborly rather than judgemental, it will get you a lot further in life!

Sharron I think you should educate yourself more on the situation before displaying how uninformed you are. I have family in Texas and the mayor and governor of the state of Texas told them to stay home so that people along the coast could evacuate. My sister has not had power for over a week now. They have gone out everyday and helped their neighbors clean up the debris and shared what generator power they could find with each other, Now that the storm has passed millions are still without power. Schools are closed, stores have no power so they cannot provide food, gas is not available to get out even if they wanted to. It is hot down there and people are miserable. They are not asking to be bailed out all they are asking for is to get the power on so they can take care of themselves. I expect if you were the one that experienced a natural disaster that you would feel the same way they do. I believe in karma so if I were I would be careful what you say.

I am an Ike survivor and sharron1002002 you are apalling. Your attitude is what makes up all the selfishness in this world today. I survived Ike with the help of neighbors, friends and family. Two trees fell on my house while my husband and two children were in the house. We are blessed to be alive. Help never came to us in the form of any emergency local, state or federal aid. even though i called several times. Live down power lines were in my backyard and help just came today. 6 days later. But during all this time all you see in the news I hear is about the government bailing out Wall Street. I guess yo think that is OK. Millions in Houston r in my shoes, but little is reported. Don't toot your horn, we have no choice but to pull ourselves out by our bootstraps. I think someday if you walk our shoes you will receive no help and see if you may have a different attitude.

My son lives in Spring, north of Houston, the electrical company had a major failure and they will be without service for at least three weeks. We live in Oklahoma and meet him Monday in Dallas with our generator, two more we purchased from OKC, 2 window air conditioners and 12 5 gallon gas cans. They filled all the gas cans, their truck, and the generators south of dallas. It took them 6 hours (a 3 hour trip) because of all the traffic. There are signs saying not to go to Houston because of limited gas, so most people were stopping in Huntsville and it backed up the highway traffic. the cost of what we spent and the gas was well over $3500, my son and his wife have good jobs and they are fortunate to be able to take care of themselves and have family that can help. A lot of these people aren't able to do such things or have family. Those are the ones that will struggle....There are, I think, 5 Million people in that area...the point is MILLIONS are taking care of themselves with limited food, water and gas. Don't be so quick to judge. My sons neighbors are helping each other. Taking care of one another, That is the American Way!

One reason many people will not evacuate is that the police will not let them go home after the storm. Residents want to recover what they can and prevent further deterioration of their houses but only those who stayed through the storm are allowed to be there. Next storm you can expect even more people to stay.

I understand the "stay and protect your property" attitude but if you do it you had better be ready to deal with the results of your decision. Have enough supplies to hold out for two weeks and the means to support AND protect you and yours. Do not burden state and federal resourses to help you. It's not their job. And it's not mine to pay for it.

      BE READY YOURSELF!

All the readiness in the world cannot prepare you for some of the damage. I have family there and they were advised by the goverment not to leave because they wanted the people living on the coast to get out.It is extremely hot there and humid. To get gas is hard and at times downright dangerous. They work all day cleaning up their neighborhood and all night trying to get some rest.I believe until you experience it for yourself that you will never know what it is like or how you will react. I do know that spouting hateful things when you are not informed shows a lack of social understanding. Karma sucks that is one thing I do know.

I am a Hurricane Ike survivor. I am appalled by Sharron1002002'. That is the attitude in this world that makes up all the selfishness and gloominess, My family and I got thru with the help of neighbors, friends and family, not the government. 2 trees fell on my house while my family hid under a table. We are blessed to be alive. No emergency responders ever came no matter how many times I called. Today, after 6 days after the storm hit the electric company finally came because there were downed power lines in my backyard. I called as much as twice a day. I was afraid for my childrens safety. My home is destroyed, we are all displaced. I am in another city now with my children and my husband stayed behind to deal with the mess. It is not safe to stay there. I see on the news how the governmnet is bailing out Wall street and I guess that is OK, right! Sharron you disgust me, I think you need to experience a natural disaster, it may humble you.

I am a Hurricane Katrina survivor and I can tell you that lazytexan is right. We left for Katrina and it took us almost 10 days before we could get back home. Seeing the destruction on the TV and all the time stressing out because you don't know if you have a home left or not, if you are being looted and if you still have a job.

And to Sharron1002002 - unless you have been there, don't judge others. Try having everything taken away from you - no home, no job, nothing. I'm all for pulling one's self up but there are times when even the best of us are too shocked and in such disbelief that it is almost impossible to have a rational thought. Reality comes all too quickly - your insurance company is trying to screw you (even if you do have enough coverage) - contractors are trying to rip you off and then people like yourself are spewing hateful comments without knowing the full story.
