All I have to say, is that if all the jobs would stop going overseas and we did not depend on everyone else for our essentials maybe we would not be in this mess. Do the math, if people have well paying jobs, they spend money and buy house and new cars; if people do not have money, then they are unable to make a house payment, lose their cars and rack up debt. It is insane for company's to cut payroll to save some money and then wonder why nobody is buying anything. If people don't have money, how in the hell are people going to be able to buy things.

The 'voodoo' unregulated economics that has been the norm of the past 8 years has finally been exposed in a most resounding fashion given the latest announcements on AIG, Lehman, Merrill Lynch, Fannie Mae, Freddie mac, etc. Funny thing is, until less than 2 years ago, Sen. McCain was Chair of the Commerce committee that had oversight on the regulation of the banking and financial investment industries, he along with his buddy Sen. Phil Gramm (R-Texas) did everything they could to deregulate such protections designed to protect the American people in order to allow their supporters to steal and gamble. Farewell to Bush/McCain/Palin, it has not been so nice knowing you as the chickens finally come home to roost!

I have to clarify some distortions about the Senator...
But I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight...

If you grow up in Hawaii and Kansas, raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'
    * If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
    * If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a
state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, and if you create the largest grass roots political movement in American history based around a constituency of American citizens you don't have any real leadership experience.

    * If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate laywer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.
** Now if your total resume is: 6 differnt colleges to graduate in Journalism, local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive. A heartbeat away from president!

But you say McCain is running against Senator Obama! No Mccain picked Palin which shows his lack of credibility to run against Senator Obama!

Can you feel the "denial" through out the conservative world? We all do!
All this from the same people who said, "Bush has wisodm, credibility, character he has experience!"

What a farce and now the Bush/conservative farce continues with McCain/Palin! No matter how you say their names it hurts!

The choice is clear "leadership" over "vanity and self-righteousness!"

Senator Obama will stand of for the middle class because thats the demographic that will put him in the Whitehouse!

Forget the politics for a second and just look at the economy. It's more important, even, than the current race. There are some really bad fundamentals that we've been resting on for a long time now.

It goes a lot deeper than Bush. Corporate America's gotten more and more mercenary as a result of a lot of factors - maybe ones that are inherent in capitalism as an economic force.

The competition, from a prisoners' dilemma point of view, and the insulation of shareholders from the day-to-day business of a company have resulted in the need for a lot of numbers on balance sheets that are overcoming real goods production in a lot of business sectors, particularly service sectors like Wall Street. A lot of this is inherent in capitalism itself.

Heretic as it is to say this in America - capitalism may not be a long-term viable economy philosophy any more than communism was. Communism fell prey to economic inefficiency and lost the race with capitalism - but capitalism falls prey to almost the exact opposite: brutal economic efficiency that results in overproduction, increasingly scarce resources, severe environmental damage, and the progression of mergers to the point where the institution starts to get crushed under the weight of an increasingly exorbitant managerial class and core businesses suffer as the company becomes too large to operate efficiently. Companies end up resorting to monopolistic tactics in order to keep profitability, real economic progress starts to halt, but the consumption of natural resources continues at an unsustainable pace. Eventually companies crumble from the inside out.

Wall Street is there. The U.S. auto industry is within a few years of it at best unless something dramatic takes place. The military-industrial sector is consuming a tremendous amount of resources but producing less and less real economic benefit. Our food industries are resorting to factory farming techniques that compromise the quality of our food and consume agricultural resources at a breakneck pace.

I don't know what's going to happen, but that kind of system can't last.

We may see a post-capitalist world before we die, folks. It's gonna be interesting to see what that looks like.

To stop the economic meltdown, the gang of politicians in the White House, who are in cohoots with the lobbyists, special interests and big corporations, must be voted out of office come November 4.
There is a close similarity between Bush's attempt to have his cleaning lady nominated for the Supreme Court and McCain's selection of Barracuda to fill the second highest executive office in the country, vice president of the Untited States.
Recent polls show that the Palin's popularity bubble is being deflated, dwon 10 points in three days. As the American people learn the real nature of the beast, they begin to understand that she does not even qualify to be mayor of a town of 7,000 people. She hired people to do the job for her. The American voter is beginning to understand that she is not the quintessential American lady who is the female version of Barack Obama. There is no comparison between the two.
Obama is a graduate from Harvard law School. Palin attended 5 different small calleges before graduating.with a bachelors degree, with God knows what grades.
Obama spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer who became the first black President of the Harvard Law Review. He became a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with 750,000 people; became chairman State Senate's Health and Human Services committere, in his own state of Illinois; spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people, while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, while Palin with 20 months as the vovernor of a state with only 650,000 people, and before that a weather girl, and 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town of 7,000 people, and she has the audacity to say thea Obama has no leadership qualities. May God save us from another 4 years of Bush's third term under his surrogate McCain with the likes of Sarah Palin!!!

didnt the goverment bailout a savings and loan bank approx 20 years ago out west that was run by a Bush family member. see a pattern

Let me see. 8 years of a President who lowered taxes, started 2 wars with no way to pay for them( the first time in the history of the USA) , relaxed all regulations on banking and finance, gutted any environmental standards and now we are to be surprised that this is happening? I think not. Rather, we should brace ourselves for the rest of what is about to happen. The bailouts at the top have weakened the banking system and that is only the begining. Others, smaller banks, will follow but none will be bailing them out, nothing left to bail them out with. With regard to the environment, we have already seen some of the results of gobal warming.Yes folks, all that rain that is falling is coming from....you guessed it, he melting polar ice caps. What is happening now and for the past year or so can be likened to a perfect storm. 8 years ago, a guy was elected to serve as president. Instead we got a guy who called himself the decider. And he decided to go on holidays and make sure all his supporters got everything they wanted. In 2006, the democrates took control of congress and the president had to start to work as no more rubber stamp. John McCain was a maverick until this past few years. To get the nomination he had to endorse the Bush agenda. He endorsed and there is no way in hell that any one with 1/2 a brain would vote for the same bunch back in power. Then again, maybe they would and the final chapter of american history will be written. Corporate america will survive as they have already left the shores of america to avoid taxes or to hire cheap labor. Its the ordinary people that will be left holding the IOU's in country that used to be the great light on the hill for the world

Once Upon a Time, "credit" meant being able to go to a bank, and if you could make a very substantial down payment and your record was good, financing an auto purchase for two years, or a house for thirty. "Credit" also sometimes meant "90 days As Good As Cash!!!".

Then "credit" became three years for an auto, and despite the naysayer's cries of doom, the sky did not fall.

Then five years, then for longer than the auto would last... and STILL the sky did not fall!

And then, sayeth Wall Street, "Let there be credit cards!" And truly the plastic did flourish and multiply, fruitfully (at least for the credit card industry).

And Lo! Anyone could now have anything, any time, and put off payment... forever! And again Wall Street did gather the (low-hanging) fruit.

And then, said the Republicans, let there be no more Glass-Steagall! For surely Wall Street knoweth what is Best For Our Country!!

Yea, verily, said the Democrats: and let Everyman possesseth a Large House, procured on everlasting credit, for surely this is the right of Everyman.

"With my Blessing" saith Lord of the Fed, the Honorable and Saintly Mr. Greenspan: "For truly the Marketplace Will Regulate Itself!" (as it is written on the Sacred Stones). Let us also now gather the Higher-Up Fruit!!

And so it did come to pass that at a certain point in time, The Sky did in fact Fall, and that time is now upon us.

And Everyman pointeth to Someone Else, and proclaimith it to be All Your Fault.

And the Words of Kelly are not remembered: "We have met the enemy, and He is Us!"

It never ceases to amaze me that American philosophers, scholars, and writers in droves write about the current fleecing of our constitution our nation, and the American middle class all the while conservatives continue to flock to right wing evangelists, tabloid pundits and GOP theology all this after
7 and a half years of GOP subversion. What does tha nation have to show? An economy in shambles unfinished wars more on the horizon and debt so enormous China and other foreign countries now own much of our nations remaining equity!

Conservatism is a dismal failure, all the proof is in your house equity, your bank accounts, your paycheck, it???s on Wallstreet, its on the shelves of your supermarket, its on the corner gas station, its in job and house loss, its in record federal debt, its
on the streets and in the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan.

And what do conservatives recant with? The dems have been in control for one year and a halve? What they don't say is, Bush vetoed the democratic legislation in record amounts during this time! And what you dont hear is that the low approval rating for the senate is peppered by the fact that the dems didn't impeach the crooks that currently take up space in the Whitehouse!

And if you really do the math Bush and the GOP have been in power near 80% on the past two terms. So conservatives are in denial- its 80% the fault of the GOP for their corrupt and inept group and their self serving policies! 80% of our nations failure lies with conservative policies! By the laws of deduction this also means that 80% of the success belongs to the dems!
    Enough!

Do any of you brain surgeons commenting about Bush and his administration, realize that all these problems started under a democratic congress? Maybe not.

    • Posted By: just 1 of 300 million @ 09/16/2008 11:50:20 AM

Stoobee@ said.... Do any of you brain surgeons commenting about Bush and his administration, realize that all these problems started under a democratic congress? Maybe not.

Well Stoobee, are you speaking of the deregulation that started with President Reagan? His policy of trusting the foxes to guard the hen house. Are you possibly speaking of the time between 2002- 2007 where anyone could get a home loan, all they had to do was lie about their income or assets?

This financial fiasco has been in the works for decades. We use to be a society that saved, now we are a society that runs in debt. This did not just start in the last 21 months, since we've had a democratic majority in congress. This borrow off of tomorrows wealth simply couldn't be substained any longer. Let us not forget in the last seven years American workers paychecks have flatlined, while the wealth is unproportionately staying in the top three percent of the wealthiest of Americans.

Please Stoobee, educate yourself on the issues, instead of just blindly following one party. While both parties have their good and bad politics and policies, to simply state because this meltdown is happening now, is proof that it must be the fault of the "democratic " controlled congress shows a real lack of critical thought on this issue. Not only about how long it took us to get here, but how deregulation played a big part in it.

We need to stop voting "strictly" based on party affiliation. Instead we should cast our vote based on the issues and what is best for our country.

And McCain plans to INCREASE taxes - not cut them. Anyone with company paid health insurance currently not taxable will pay taxes on that benefit as income under McCain. And this will make everything worse

  • Posted By: Duck Soup @ 09/15/2008 11:12:03 PM

    Today, McCain said:

"???The fundamentals of our economy are strong, but these are very, very difficult times,??? he told supporters, ???so I promise you: We will never put America in this position again. We will clean up Wall Street.???"

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080915.wibbitson0916/BNStory/International/home

Later in the day McCain realized his misstep and tried to blame it on Obama. McCain said that by "fundamentals" he meant the American people. McCain thereby implied that Obama was insulting the American people. The real insulting going on, of course, was McCain insulting our intelligence with yet another lie.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/#26727858

McCain apparently thinks he has to outdo Bush's dirty tricks against McCain himself in 2000 to get himself elected. Even Karl Rove, Bush's king of dirty pool who eviscerated McCain in 2000, just said that McCain is being dishonest. (see prior link)

    • Posted By: Tomv @ 09/16/2008 11:24:53 AM

Just think about what McCain said - "We will never put America in this position again." Was that an apology for doing it in the first place? It should be.
