Also, the criminal removal statistics reported in the article were inaccurate. The article says that ICE removed fewer criminal aliens in the last two years but the facts tell a different story. Each year, for the last several years, the number of criminal aliens removed by ICE has steadily increased.
In FY2005, ICE removed 89,696 criminal aliens from the U.S. In FY2006, that number increased to 93,034 and in FY2007, it grew to 97,544.
As these facts show, ICE places great importance on the identification, arrest and removal of criminal aliens.
And while this doesn't diminish for a second the tragedy that occurred in this case, I hope this letter can provide Newsweek readers with a better understanding of the facts of the Martinez case and the truth about ICE enforcement efforts.
