Also, the criminal removal statistics reported in the article were inaccurate. The article says that ICE removed fewer criminal aliens in the last two years but the facts tell a different story. Each year, for the last several years, the number of criminal aliens removed by ICE has steadily increased.

In FY2005, ICE removed 89,696 criminal aliens from the U.S. In FY2006, that number increased to 93,034 and in FY2007, it grew to 97,544.

As these facts show, ICE places great importance on the identification, arrest and removal of criminal aliens.

And while this doesn't diminish for a second the tragedy that occurred in this case, I hope this letter can provide Newsweek readers with a better understanding of the facts of the Martinez case and the truth about ICE enforcement efforts.

Sincerely,
Richard Rocha
ICE Public Affairs

Editor's Note: The criminal removal statistics that Mr. Rocha claims are inaccurate actually came from ICE, in a July 11, 2008 press release, a copy of which was provided to Mr. Rocha.

In San Francisco, the mayor has failed to cooperate on immigration issues, even if the immigrants have committed felons. San Francisco is the same city where Nancy Pelosi, mother of 5, lives. Nancy Pelosi values vacation more than a solid comprehensive energy plan that would help us with the cost of energy that fuels our cars that takes us to our jobs and fuels our homes that keeps us warm. She also supports this mayor.
