USA west, was before nowhere. Are you saying that building railroad from East to West back then in our history, also meant building road to nowhere. As the railroad was build, the West become accessible and flourished (Los Angeles, San Fransisco, and so on). If our great great grandfather did not build the road to nowhere, USA was only New York, Los Angeles would never been born.
Palin road is not road to nowhere. Palin road is road to growth and prosperity. Let alone, Alaska has a lot of oil, USA badly needed. Alaskan need to grow for the goodness of USA.

I'm not so much troubled by Palin's lack of experience as I am by her actual experience. The amount of dirt being uncovered on her is astounding - we're not talking little things here and there but a systematic record of lying, corrupt behavior, self-serving decisions, stonewalling and abuse of her offices as both Mayor of Wassila and Governor of Alaska. She is 110% about dinosaur politics as usual, and any claims of open and honest government are flat-out bull*hit.

We need genuine leadership like we've never needed it before. Cynical choices, divisive, empty rhetoric, "trust me my friends" platitudes and snarky one-llne putdowns won't cut it anymore. The office of Vice President isn't a trainee position. You can't take an ex-beauty queen, marginally educated hocky mom with zero foreign policy experience and bring her up to speed in a couple of months. If that were the case then most of the posters on this blog would be equally qualified to be VP.

Lots of people choose to blindly follow the Republican ticket no matter what, and they'll never give up this desperate allegiance even if the world goes up in flames. Trying to use logic and facts to sway their opinion is futile, like... putting lipstick on a pig? Yup. So perhaps the best strategy is to move on and let them do what they want to do. Personally I have no illusions about converting hard-core McCain supporters.

The best weapons we have are our time and our votes. Get up from your computer and volunteer at your local Democratic headquarters if you truly want to make a difference in this election. Come November 4th make your voice heard and help start our country back down the road to the core values our founders established so long ago.

First, Palin could have stopped the road project, the contract was signed days before she took office, construction itself would be a long way off. You do not begin road construction projects in winter in Alaska. Second, the road project could have been delayed until a final decision had been reached on how to connect the island to the mainland, and then updated to be the best use of the money. Of course, when she first got in office, she was still in favor of the bridge project. It did not get killed until after she was in office.

I will say, in Alaska???s defense, it is a vast expanse of land with civilization sometimes few and far between (if you put Alaska on the lower 48 states, it would cover about a third, or as we used to say, if Alaska was cut in half & made into 2 states, Texas would be the third largest state). Because of some of the unique characteristics of the land, it is frequently difficult to construct roads and other infrastructure. You have to deal with things like permafrost, very cold temperatures, very short construction periods and a host of other challenges. The Alaska Highway took years to built and they redo and work on it every summer. In a place like Ketchikan, heavy equipment for a major undertaking like that would have to be barged in. It wouldn???t happen quickly.

Don???t get me wrong, I don???t like Palin or what she has done in my former state, but I will always love the great land. For all the challenges of living there, no other place is like it. Alaska provides a lot of the seafood and fish that gets into the lower 48 and elsewhere and while it is nowhere close to the 20% Palin tried to claim, it does produce oil. And there is something special about a place when living in a city of over 262,000 you can open your door to find a moose standing there or get on your bike and ride through a national forest and come out in another part of town, or be out picnicking at 12:30 AM on summer solstice. ( I've experienced 70 below on the North Slope and 30 below for 3 weeks straight in Anchorage too.) And while I hate to send Palin back to inflict more on Alaska, it would be a much more injurious if she made it to DC.

Nims is always stealing my words, but that's OK.

I find it ironic that Palin first ofall casts herself as a maverick and reformer. She's on a warpath against earmarks, and trashes Obama for requesting earmarks. And then when no one is looking, Guess what? She's asking for earmarks.

On Friday morning, September 12, on the View, McCain claimed that Palin never asked for earmarks, and on the same day Palin defended her earmarks because they were "public requests" or something of that nature. Actually according to an AP release dated September 8 by Sara Kugler, Alaskans get about 11 times more earmark money than the people of Illinois. According to an AP article by Garance Burke (September 16) Palin asked for another $ 600 million bridge to her hometown Wasilla. According to a September 9 article on Time.CNN titled "Alaskonomics" by Michael Kinsley, per capital Alaskans pay $5,434 in federal taxes, per capita, Alaskas receive $13,950. Why hasn't Palin ever made these facts public? What ever happened to that good old "straight talk express."

I can't help but recall that lyrics of that good old country music classic "The Harper Valley PTA" Palin may be the soccer mom, the hockey mom, or lately the Bible mom, she may even be a proud member of the PTA, but in my book, she is the text book example of the Herper Valley hypocrite.

We've already had 8 years of hypocrites. Do we need 4 more years of the same old same old. The GOP is nothing but hypocrites and liars - no except. It's time to fire every one in the GOP and let the Democrats take charge. (P.S. Lest Democrats forget, "sic transit gloria mundi.")

I asked Karl Rove this question on the Wall Street Journal page. I am not sure he is going to answer.

My question is in two parts. First, if Boeing proposes to build an airplane for $250 million, is given this money to do that, then decides to say "no" to building the airplane and keeps the money, is this considered theft? Second, if Alaska proposes to build a bridge, is given $250 million to do that, then says "thanks, but no thanks" and keeps the money, why would the Alaskan governor not be under criminal indictment?

It sounds like the previous governor should also be indicted.

Or did the Republican US Congress simply call the money a gift for Alaska to spend any way they wanted? If so, wow!, Ted Stevens really could get things done. So is he one of the "good old boys in Washington?" Oops, I thought she was talking about Democrats.

So it goes on. And according to the above article, the bridge project goes on, so maybe there is no crime. But wait, she said "Thanks, but no thanks," and we will build our own bridge if we want. So how can the money still be in Alaska?

Even way up there in Alaska they know that the pirate code applies to earmarks; "take what you can, give nothing back". Gov. Palin is proving to be another lying politician who says one thing while doing another. Granted she is probably nicer about it than most, but a liar is a liar. I expect the spin machine on her side to explain this lie as either not really an earmark , or as not really her idea and/or not her fault. Somebody else will be blamed, maybe it was actually Obama's fault, and she can keep on telling her adoring fans about her passion for reform. Gov. Palin loves her earmarks and loves saying how much she hates them at political rallys. I doubted her qualifications due to her limited experience, but I have to admit she can lie with the best of them. Everyone know we love the liars, otherwise why would we keep electing them.

Fannie Mae, Freddy Mac, Bear Sterns, Lehman Brothers, AIG and the rest of the failed institutions have failed primarily because of former Senator Phil Gramm. The Gramm-Leach-Biley Act stripped away the regulations separating banking from investment companies, insurance companies and mortgage guaranty companies. Those regulations were added after the Great Depression when it became obvious that allowing banks to be in bed with the stock market was a sure way to rig the system to collapse, as it did in 1929.

Lo an behold, a few years after the regulations were removed, the sh!t has hit the fan, and the inter-related investment, insurance, mortgage and banking industries are now starting to collapse, and guess what, you, the taxpayer will have to pay to clean it up.

Phil Gramm is the Senator who brought you the "Enron Loophole" that de-regulated futures trading, causing the prices of oil, gas and food to spiral out of control.

Senator Phil Gramm was McCain's top economic advisor until recently, when he was forced to step down after he said that there is no problem with our economy other than a "mental recession" on the part of a "nation of whiners." Phil Gramm is the man who McCain said he wants to name Secretary of the Treasury if he becomes President. You have to believe John McCain when he says that he knows little about the economy -- so little that he doesn't even know who to choose as an advisor.

Barack Obama addressed the Enron Loophole, futures trading, short-selling and Wall Street de-regulation months ago in his economic position papers, which are available on his website. Obama has been saying all along that he is going to put in strict regulations and clean up Wall Street.

McCain just started saying that he favors regulation in the past couple of weeks. How is it that McCain is going to put in new regulations, when he plans to appoint Phil Gramm, the man who caused the de-regulation, as Secretary of the Treasury? McCain says he would fire Christopher Cox, the SEC Chairman, to solve the problem. However, the problem is caused by lack of regulations on the legislative level, regulations that were removed before Cox was appointed. The SEC can only enforce regulations that actually exist, so making a scapegoat of Cox solves nothing. I would suggest that McCain is guilty of saying what's politically expedient, that he does not actually intend to regulate the banking industry. McCain knows that most Americans are unaware of the details.

I am a middle-aged white conservative Republican who loves America. I am voting for Barack Obama.

Some people are not voting for Obama because he is biracial. Prejudice is dehumaning others who are different than us, so we can treat them anyway we want. What part of Obama is not human? Do you hate only the African ethnicity? It is like Solomom with the tow mothers and baby, Should we divide him up, and only acknowledge the European part of him? That just how stuptd this thinking is. None of us in American are pure anything. He symbolizies an inner intergration, that some haven't achieved outwardly yet. This is a spiritual test for us. Love my neighbor as yourself. Your neighbor is yourself.

So a person should vote for Obama to prove they are not racist? Isn't that racist in itself?

      • Posted By: auspartan @ 09/18/2008 2:12:33 PM

Just Because........... Just Because He's Black

A white man asked his black friend, 'Are you voting for Barack
Obama just because he's black?' The black man responded by saying, 'Why not? Hell, in this country
men are pulled over everyday just cause they're black; passed over for promotions just cause they're black; considered to be criminals just cause they're black; and there are going to be thousands of
you who won't be voting for him just because he's black! However, you do not seem to have a problem with that! This country was built with the sweat and whip off the black slaves' back, and now a descendent of those same slaves has a chance to lead the same country, where we weren't even considered to be people, where we weren't allowed to be educated, drink from the same water fountains, eat in the same
restaurants, or even vote. So yes! I'm going to vote for him! But it's not just because he's black, but because he is hope, he is change, and he now allows me to understand when my grandson says that
he wants to be president when he grows up, it is not a fairy tale but a short term goal. He now sees, understands and knows that he can achieve, withstand and do ANYTHING just because he's black!'

        • Posted By: 4astrongamerica @ 09/18/2008 4:00:12 PM

First of all, Mr. Obama is not a descendant of one of the slaves that contributed to the prosperity of this country - His father and paternal relatives lived in Kenya. Secondly, how did Barack Obama get to this level of success if he had been so discriminated against? Finally, if I voted for Mr. Obama simply because he is black, that would make me a racist - I'm no racist. If he gets my vote, it will be because he is the best candidate for the job.

          • Posted By: AmSharper @ 09/18/2008 5:26:58 PM

The hope for change in a country that has embraced the idea of changing way slower than the actuality of it is still valid. We may have progressed a great deal to get to this point and that does not mean he should be elected just because he is black. The fact is like it or not being black has not been seen as his ace in the hole. If dem candidate was white and as eloquint and chrismatic as barrak while the heavy stone of the bush presidency hung around the neck of the repubs this election would already be a forgone conclusion. That said, Obama's candiacy is not succeeding becase of his color but perhaps and even inspite of it. Maybe we realy will get to the point of color not mattering ... one can hope.

A BLACK LOS ANGELES TALK RADIO HOST, WENT DOWN A LIST OF THINGS SENATOR OBAMA HAS SAID THAT AREN'T EXACTLY CORRECT???..

    Obama's Not Exactlys:

1.) Selma March Got Me Born - NOT EXACTLY, your parents felt safe enough to have you in 1961 - Selma had no effect on your birth, as Selma was in 1965. (Google 'Obama Selma ' for his full March 4, 2007 speech and articles about its various untruths.)

2.) Father Was A Goat Herder - NOT EXACTLY, he was a privileged, well-educated youth, who went on to work with the Kenyan Government.

3.) Father Was A Proud Freedom Fighter - NOT EXACTLY, he was part of one of the most corrupt and violent governments Kenya has ever had.

4.) My Family Has Strong Ties To African Freedom - NOT EXACTLY, your cousin Raila Odinga has created mass violence in attempting to overturn a legitimate election in 2007, in Kenya . It is the first widespread violence in decades. The current government is pro-American but Odinga wants to overthrow it and establish Muslim Sharia law. Your half-brother, Abongo Oba ma, is Odinga's follower. You interrupted your New Hampshire campaigning to speak to Odinga on the phone. Check out the following link for verification of that.... and for more.
Obama's cousin Odinga in Kenya ran for president and tried to get Sharia Muslim law in place there. When Odinga lost the elections, his followers have burned Christians' homes and then burned men, women and children alive in a Christian church where they took shelter.. Obama SUPPORTED his cousin before the election process here started. Google Obama and Odinga and see what you get. No one wants to know the truth.

5.) My Grandmother Has Always Been A Christian - NOT EXACTLY, she does her daily Salat prayers at 5am according to her own interviews. Not to mention, Christianity wouldn't allow her to have been one of 14 wives to 1 man.

6.) My Name is African Swahili - NOT EXACTLY, your name is Arabic and 'Baraka' (from which Barrack came) means 'blessed' in that language. Hussein is also Arabic and so is Obama.
Barack Hussein Obama is not half black. If elected, he would be the first Arab-American President, not the first black President.
Barack Hussein Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother's side and 43.75% Arabic and 6.25% African Negro from his father's side. While Barack Hussein Obama's father was from Kenya , his father's family was mainly Arabs.. Barack Hussein Obama's father was only 12.5% African Negro and 87.5% Arab (his father's birth certificate even states he's Arab, not African Negro).

7.) I Never Practiced Islam - NOT EXACTLY, you practiced it daily at school, where you were registered as a Muslim and kept that faith for 31 years, until your wife made you change, so you could run for office.
4-3-08 Article 'Obama was 'quite religious in Islam''

These are just a few of the39 lies I receivedin an email.
GOOGLE THESE THINGS AND YOU WILL SEE THAT OBAMA IS NOTHING BUT A LIAR!

Check this out on Snopes folks, this is a bogus posting, It's all debunked on Snopes!

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 09/18/2008 2:19:48 PM

      1. The Selma race conflicts were going on long before the actual 1965 march, through the 1950s actually. So Obama could technically claim that he was born from that conflict. This is also attributed to an overly-literal interpretation of what was meant to be a rhetorical comment.
      2. Obama's grandfather was a tribe elder. As he says in his book, Obama's father grew up tending to the family's goats and attending a British school, where he eventually got a scholarship to attend college in the US.
      3. Obama never claimed his father was a freedom fighter. He actually admits in his book that his father returned to Kenya to work for the government, the corruption of which caused him to become a bitter drunk.
      4. There is no evidence to support the familial ties.
      5. Obama was speaking of his maternal grandmother, who was married to only one man, not his paternal grandmother.
      6. Barack is a Swahili AND Arabic name, as well, the same way Joseph is a name in multiple languages and religious.
      7. This is not true.

I mean, really, if you're going to spout the same tired old email that's been circulating, can you at least check Snopes for accuracy? All of your claims are refuted here:
      http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/50lies.asp

    • Posted By: valark @ 09/18/2008 12:21:26 PM

You have to understand the simple concept that even if Obama tells 100 lies today, it doesn't make it okay when someone else - Palin/McCain/Biden - tells one. The two things are not comparable.

  • Posted By: lexi97701 @ 09/18/2008 3:21:15 PM

Yep, she's a real fiscal conservative and reformer alright.

  • Posted By: JohnnyJumpUp @ 09/18/2008 2:04:00 PM

Give me a break...........Palin took office in December of 2006. She was "approached" in July of 2007 and asked to kill the road, just a few months after she had killed the Bridge? Had she done so, she would have been pilloried for wasting millions of dollars since construction of the road was already under way.

And the continued characterization of Gravina Island as a community of less than 50 deliberately obscures the central point. Ketchikan is a town of 8,000 people on one island and their airport is across a channel on another island.. There are no roads out so if you're sick and need to get medical attention, the only way to get there is to take a boat to Gravina Island and fly out.

    • Posted By: Bona Phide @ 09/18/2008 3:19:11 PM

So you think we should waste hundreds of millions of dollars on 7,400 idiots that choose to live in the middle of nowhere? Sorry not convinced. If they want civilization build it themselves, or move back to it...

Whether or not you agree with Palin's record, at least she has a record to discuss. Unlike Obama who managed to slip through 8 years of state and US Senate positions with very little to claim as a record, Palin has taken stands, voted for issues, and made decisions. His references to his record make me wonder when a child will stand up ask where the emperor's clothes are.

You cant see what you are not looking for. You are still making excuses dispite the facts. Your not going to vote for Sen Obama, no matter what. We get it. Trying to explain away Gov Palins record is making you look like a fool. Keep telling yourself it will be better with Sen " I was for deregulation before I was against it " McCain as President and the rest of us will elect the person who understands why during the last 8 years while the Republican party has led this nation, we all are so much worst off. How's your 401K doing these days? Maybe this road will take you to the bridge to Never Never Land.

If she did NOTHING, then , of course, she is responsible for the continued and increased growth of meth labs and drug use in Wasilla and the rest of Alaska!!

I honestly am baffled as to why FACTS like her corruption, wasteful spending, and abuse of power doesn't disturb the public but lies like Obama being a muslim, not patriotic, etc. is somehow important? With 3 of the 5 major banks tanking, government bailouts of Freddie and Fannie, record uninsured, job losses, credit crisis, energy costs soaring, a bloated failure of a "war"...the average American can't see through her charade? We deserve exactly what we get. I'll proudly be voting for Obama. Don't think he's gonna win, but at least I can say I didn't help sink the ship.

Actually, its Obama's socialism that bothers me the most. Take that out of the equation and I would have probably a couple objections, but not as many. The whole concept of taking money from people who have more to give to people who have less...its socialism. Its a nice thought, who does want starving people and people in pain? But everyone should share in the cost, not just a person who makes more or has more money.

As far as the VP's...I seriously got all annoyed about the Trooper issue and this one is equally annoying. You have to allow for due process. Neither issue is complete. If and when the issues are complete, then call her a thief/liar/etc. Until then, calling names is the same no matter which side you are on.

Also, if ethics are an issue for you, why can you support Biden? You see what I am getting at? Both sides have amazing issues. Serious issues. I don't think this is an election where you can just vote party line and be happy that your beliefs, needs, desires will be represented. I have friends on both sides who have told me they are voting for the other side this election because of this.

Hating a group of people, Republican/Democrat/whoever, is absurd though and possibly why there is so much anger on this board.

In that case McCain is a Communist. It is Marx -Lenin theory that constriction worker or maid can rool the country.

No, that is not the same thing, a belief versus a process...for example, if I think you are a troll making silly semantical distinctions he/she heard on the radio/tv, is different than me excercising sanctions on your ability to say such things. Obama can believe in whatever he would like and that would not bother me. He has made it clear that he wants to take money from some people to give it to others. This is a policy he endorses and wants to put into effect.

            Also, you skipped Biden...any reason?

Alaska distributes revenue from the Perminant fund every year to every Alaskan. Sarah Palin distributed about $1200 additional this year by taxing the increase in oil company revenues due to this rise in the price of oil. Isn't this taking from those that have and giving it those tht do not? Isn't this a form of welfare or socialism?

Let's not forget that we are talking about taking money from 5% percent of the population making over $250,000 per year, and giving some back to the 95% percent of the nation that made it possible for them to get that rich. The tax breaks they already receive through their positions are much more substantial than the other 90% of us get. Lunch write offs, company cars, gas cards, and such. Any of us that knows an executive level employee knows that they receive a lot of breaks that go with their jobs, so do I feel like it's wrong to take a little more in taxes from them? Absolutely not. This conditioning that we have been subject to that tries to convince us we need less government, and less regulation of the market has led us to having to open our pocket books to bail out the same people sending predatory loans our way. When we bail out companies with our tax dollars, and makes sure the executives that put those companies in adverse situation keep their companies, then I have no remourse for expecting them to kick a few more tax dollars back to us in the middle class because we could use it more wisely than them!!! Obama/Biden!!!
