I find it amazing that when it comes to reinforcing some of the last real american manufacturing enterprises left in this country, anyone can have any negative thoughts of Uncle Sam helping them achieve a more competetive edge. Unlike the wealthy financial sectors whose CEO's and management teams took their profits and left the taxpayers with the bill, Ford, GM, and Chrysler not only generate tax dollars to fund your government projects but also will probably the ones who out of all the bail-outs will actually pay back the money.

Do your homework they may be American companies, however; the jobs went to Mexico and Canada. Even Hollywood is getting in on the act and are making more movies in Canada becouse it's cheaper. I would have no problem helping them if they brought the jobs back home, and start using American steel also not the Mexican steel. If they don't get the money it will be Mexico and Canada that gets hurt.

Help me out here! A bailout for Detroit? This is a Jay Leno joke, right? Uhh, for how long has the Big 3 been selling gas-guzzling SUVs to dumb Americans? They knew the party wasn't going to last forever so now that they are completely unprepared for the major increases in fuel prices (in which, they helped to create through the increased demand of their gas guzzlers), they cry for money from the Government. It looks like we have another nomination for a Business Darwin award.

Say no, and you lose Michigan.

    • Posted By: CrazyBadger28 @ 09/18/2008 3:28:49 PM

What, Michigan's going to leave the United States? I don't think so. It's not like there is one party that has little interest in giving them the money. Both parties look at it as a potentially bad deal. Sure it's a loan, but it only gets paid back if they don't go bankrupt. There's a good chance that even with the loan one or more of the companies files Chapter 11. Seems like we've had enough throwing good money after bad for my taste.

The best thing going for Michigan and the 8 Great Lake states is our water. All 8 states, Canada, and the U.S. Congress/Senate have approved a water protection pact that will stop wholesale transport of Great Lakes water to other areas. When the Southwest, and Southeast finally dry up and blow away everybody is going to want our water, but it will not happen. Businesses in need of water will be moving here. To the person whose statement about the state of Michigan was "LET THEM EAT CAKE"": Thank You! At least we'll have something to wash it down with.

Nice math, missed the interest savings by a cool $3.75 billion. Maybe that is what is wrong with the auto industry. No one is really paying attention to the numbers.

I think some people here are forgetting one very important fact. The big Wall Street bailout of AIG isn't being done as favoritism. AIG is a global company. Not that the Big-3 aren't, but they aren't to the same extent. If AIG collapses, the potential fallout throughout the world could be devastating to many more economies than just our own. The USA is a global power for a reason. Because we're able to put ourselves on the line for more than just ourselves.
To those who believe that Detroit was simply giving us what we wanted... I want a million dollars. Let's see if they give it to me. Nope, because it's nonsense. Just because we want it doesn't mean they have to give it to us. Go ahead and look at countries in the EU. They've had high gas prices for a LONG time. And most of their vehicles are relatively small compared to what we find here, although their families aren't necessarily smaller than ours. They seem to just have a little more common sense than a lot of americans. Last I remember a typical minivan equivalent over there only had around 170hp from their largest engine.

In reading these posts, I am inclined to agree that it is not Detroit' made what people wanted. I am sick and tired of some of the criticism I hear of the Big 3. I always hear how Toyota is so much better. Toyota has a great product. But I have always owned GM products. I have never had any serious problems with any GM car that I have owned. I drove an Oldsmobile Cutlass for 260,000 miles and other than routine maintenance, I never had a problem. I currently drive an Oldsmobile Intrigue that gets @ 30 mpg and I also drive a Chevrolet Lumina that gets a little better than 30 mpg. Considering some of the financial bailouts that we have made, I think that it is imperative as a nation to keep GM, Ford, and Chrysler going. Incidentally, GM is on the brink of many new cars of the future.

Absolutely not. They've never tried to make a better automobile. Other countries have passed them up ages ago. They've been in limbo. Let them make a better car and earn a reputation for making a car that rivals the ones from other countries and bring themselves back in the loop, Enough with the bailouts!

    Hey CSCSR

If you think america is a free country with constitutional rights, think again cuz they erased the 4th amendment publically a few months ago and if you ever read the patriot act you know most of our other rights are gone too.

Communism is looking good now compared to totalitarianism with military just witing to have their way with you on american pothole filled streets while congress and cheney convert their money into euros and make laws saying you cant.

are you even awake my friend?

What's good for Fannie Mae, Freddy Mac, AIG, and Bear Stearns is also good for the big 3 automakers. The same argument applies, the millions of people who would lose their jobs if they declare bankruptcy!

What is now going on here is that the republicans, Bush, Bernanke and Paulson, are taking the extraordinary steps of trying to BUY ALL OF THE BAD DEBT IN OUR ECONOMY in an attempt to MAKE THE ECONOMY LOOK BETTER THAN IT IS.

This is amounting to HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS for the taxpayers.

    WHY?

BECAUSE A BAD ECONOMY IS BAD NEWS FOR THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN.

    PERIOD

When did we lose the right to vote on what happens in our country?

Our forefathers (who never imagined that their framework would be so misused, I'm sure) seceded from England because of taxation without representation - what do you call the taxes we will pay in order to finance these bailouts? Did someone ask us?

So here we come to another election year when we get to pick who we consider to be the best puppet, the strings of whom will be pulled by the people with the most business influence.

Communism seems to have become the lifestyle of choice - there is no freedom in our 'democracy'. I am not free to pursue happiness at anytime as I always have to wonder how I will make it through the next month, and now that my retirement savings have gone down 40% I have that too. Communism is no walk in the park, but at least I might have five minutes a day with my family, not having to worry what will happen if one of us gets sick, if the car breaks down, etc. That's five minutes more than I have right now.

Our legislators vote themselves raises - when do WE get to say yes or no? That is the spirit upon which this country was founded.

    • Posted By: CSCSR @ 09/18/2008 5:36:10 PM

Go live in a communist country before you praise the 5 minutes you think you will get. What about the other 1,435 minutes a day you'd have to spend there. You are welcome to leave. There is no gun keeping you here. If Cuban can get here you can surely get thier. If you indeed don't get 5 minutes you have to ask in a free county how did you get to that point?

And you don't have 5 minutes but you are posting here? Perhaps you should have spent this time reading and writing with your family instead.

Now tell me you are at work. And then I'd say it's no wonder why you don't make more while wasting your employers time here. Sounds like you are being paid for what you are producing, and for these few minutes nothing. Perhaps if you worked instead of being here you'd have more money and more time for your family.

And you did get a say in the raises every time you went to the ballot box.

Harsh I know but it sometimes needs to be said.

Wow - So their argument is that we shouldn't be buying Japanese batteries. Well if they had some vision 15 years ago, they would have developed those batteries themselves. I have an idea...any company that gets money from the federal government can only do so, if the executives agree to give up all their stock to the federal government and get paid minimum wage until the money is repaid in full. I don't want my tax dollars going to a company while the CEO gets paid millions for driving the company into the ground.

  • Posted By: vstillwell @ 09/18/2008 5:33:59 PM

Hey, we've gotta do something. We don't want to loose what little manufacturing we have left. The Republican dream is almost in full bloom: A service economy with lightly regulated financial markets. See what happens. We'll all be running around serving eachother something while the banks fail. Great times. This economic darwinism sucks. Sucks for all of us middle class suckers who can do nothing about it except hope that our vote counts. Hanging chads anyone? This couldn't have happened with out the help of all you evangelical freaks, Jeb and George Bush, and the out of control Republican party. Take a bow.

  • Posted By: gt350pony66 @ 09/18/2008 5:33:46 PM

In my last post I stated that I hadn't lost my (current) employment (so far)...thats THIS job, of all of 18 months, I held a management position at my last job for 2 years of the 7 that I was there. After I was laid off in feb. of '07, another manager who knew both departments took over... 8 months later that dealer sold the facility to the Toyota dealer next door, now its a Scion store.

I had to move out of state, 900 miles for a "step-down" job.

I don't want to go through that again, of course my mis-fortune is nothing compared to what some are losing everyday. So who ever the clowns are that are responcible, and the ones that can fix it, you better get to it.

    Hey Vstillwee,
Because WE pay them. We also pay for all of the regulations imposed. I live in Michigan, God help me with our great Governor (sarc). The bog three built what people wanted to buy. Introduce cafe standards and then the high price of oil and what do you have? The Big Three makes plenty of highly efficient cars around the world that cannot be sold here because of the lack of diesel or the fact that they are too light and cannot meet crash standards.

The auto industry in approximately 18% or our GDP. Take em down and let them crash. Sweet idea if you have no clue

In response to Scobman: FORD owns the DETROIT LIONS

Actually, Ford Motor Company does NOT own the Detroit Lions, a member of the Ford family owns the lions with old money

110 story buildings collasping at free fall speed, its impossible according to the laws of gravity

That does not even come close to making sense...regardless of whether or not it was a conspiracy, everything falls at free fall speed, that IS obeying the laws of gravity
