I USED TO LIKE TRL... IT IS SO LAME AND GAY RIGHT NOW... COMPLETE MORANS!! JUST COMPLETE 15 YEAR OLD RETARDS YELLING OVER AND OVER AGAIN ABOUT A VIDEO THEY SAW 10000 TIMES. THE PRODYCERS MAKE THEM CHEER.. BUT ITS LAME RIGHT NOW. PLUS NO ONE GIVES A DAMN ABOUT A VIDEO, IF THEY LIKE THE TRACK AND/OR THE ARTIST THEY WILL VOTE. I HAVE SEEN SOME STUPID ASS VIDEOS BEFORE THAT HIT #1... I BET THE 15 YEAR OLDS WILL RUN A STUPID LITTLE CAMPEIGN ONLINE OR WHATEVER THEY DO THESE DAYS TO KEEP TRL AROUND BECAUSE THEY CANT LIVE WITHOUT A T-PAIN VIDEO.!!

It's my pleasure to make a note here that I have never heard of TRL before today. And just so you don't knock yourselves out making comments, I won't be back to check responses. I find it highly amusing to frequently observe that Hollywood, the popstar industry and celebutards apparently really do believe that regular people actually know who they are, care what they do or listen to what they say. The fact that huge numbers of people make a living off these cultural fixations just makes it a more devastating commentary on the condition of our culture.

How does Perez Hilton have anything to do with TRL? Cheap shot.

  • Posted By: docmars @ 09/20/2008 8:35:26 AM

Uh, why drag Perez Hilton into this? Jealous that he nets billions of viewers each day?

oh my bias.... trade in some of your wit for some class....

The problem is that the author speaks as if TRL was relevant, it wasn't. That show only resonated with teen girls between 10 and 16. As far as abandoning videos all together; it's the same problem. In my age group I know of no person who enjoys A Shot at Love with Teila Tequila. Really? The wouldn't be rerunning the same show on a daily basis, if my 15 year old sister wasn't constantly tuning in.

The fallacy of this article is that "TRL" was some sort of mass market phenomenon like "The Cosby Show" or "Titanic." In fact, "TRL" was as much a product of the fragmentation of pop culture as any of the examples given. By the time "TRL" came along, MTV had narrowed its focus very specifically to 12-24 year olds, with other viewers shoved off to affiliated channels like MTV2 or VH1. "TRL" was never a show that reached across all ages or demographic groups. Maybe the "long tail" is longer now, and content more personalized, but "TRL" was a way station on the path to the world where "people can create a cultural diet that's unique to them." That it's now supposedly a victim of that same phenomenon may be ironic, but nothing to mourn. Maybe people would rather watch the entire videos online instead of seeing thirty-second snippets intercut with narcissistic teenagers giving shout-outs and shrieking about OMG they love that group so much.

I too miss the days when MTV actually played music videos 24/7. They should have never stopped. They should have made MTV2 for all the reality show crap they ram down our throats. I basically have stopped watching. If I want to see a video I watch it online anymore. Lord knows it'll take forever to see it on MTV!!

Boy, I loved MTV back when they would actually play MUSIC VIDEOS....

Wow, I disagree with so much in this article. I see the internet as a necessary evil and I do read Perez like an addict daily, but I don't want to go to the internet for everything. I still love to read magazine on my couch while holding them in my hand and smell the perfume ads. And I don't particularly enjoy watching You Tube on a tiny little screen. My large tv is much better and my couch is a thousand times better than my computer chair. MTV is ending TRL because it wasn't working. Who wants to watch an audience of 14 year old's cheer like retards and listen to a VJ for 15 minutes while watching 10 30 second snippets of videos. Then they have MTV2 where the play the full video of obscure, unheard of crap nobody wants to see. What they should do is play the top 10 acts videos back to back with no VJ and no ridiculous teenagers. Then you've got a winner.

I will throw a giant party the day Perez Hilton stops his bashing and self-promoting blog. I, among millions, hate him.
