Teenage mothers are putting themselves, and possibly their child at risk when having a child young; as their bodies and brains are not fully developed. The articles argument of women in their thirties having children as bad because " [when women get older] their bodies are tearing down" is quite a bold and unfair statement. To be fair they should have pointed out that previous pregnancy itself is what often causes the stress to "show" in/on an older womans body. It stresses a young womans body as well, yes a woman nearing menopause will have great cause for concern if she be considering a pregnancy, but a teenager also has conerns about what stage their bodies are in, considering a womans body (including reporductive organs) is not fully developed untill AFTER adolecence. Read some medical journals, or some midwives reports, the acceptance of having children in teen years has died down largely because we have become more aware of the harsh effects it has on the mothers mental and physical health. Not to mention the fiscal stress teen mothers do in fact place on society. I know alot of teen moms insist they are "doing it all on their own", but how often does a teen parent earn enough money to house, feed, and provide medical for themselves, and a child with limited education and little work experience?...not to mention insurance, home furnishings, baby care items, clothes, utility bills, transportation, and mischelaneous expensences ie. internet, cable, telephone, entertainment. WE all know most teenagers dont have enough to make it on their own Period! Its not right to present teen motherhood as a great and glamorous blessing. Tax payers have their own families costs to worry about, these children who are having sex with such a disgustingly cavalier attitude need to keep their legs shut untill they can stand on their two feet.

Its not the end of the world for Jamie Lynn. The baby was a blessing. She sets a role on young women, yes, but at the end of the day it's up to the young women who watch to make a choice. If someone jumps off the roof is that going to set an example to young, old, people? Does that mean someone should follow? People make choices in life, whether good or bad. Everything in the world is an influence, good or bad. Your not around your children 24/7 to know what they are doing. Remember that. Don't blame Jamie or Britney or any other celeb. Your child has a choice to make. Young or old. Mature or immature. Even mature moms don't know what there doing half of the time. Who are you to judge. Ummm...no one!

Both teen girls made an error in judgement and that is pretty bad.. ALL PARENTS need to caution their kids on sex before 18 or before marriage. Besides pregnancies, there is STDs and the deadly AIDS virus to avoid at all costs. Having a baby while still being a baby yourself will change you and your family's life forever. Also, by the hand of nature/biology , teens are not mature enough to handle day to day things as easily as an adult. Their brain development is not complete. Insofar as Jamie Lynn and her mom is concerned, a book written for money and therefore greed can't be compared to Sarah and Bristol Palin. The latter did not write a book or use any aspect of fame or misfortune to get ahead. Shame on both teens for making pregnancy look good and acceptable. Moreover, Lynne's other daughter Britney is an absolute wreck (although she's improving) and that's not what Jamie Lynn needs to see. One wonders if Jamie-Lynn was influenced by Britney in getting pregnant (of course, birth control may or may have not been used; Casey should be in jail for sex with an underaged kid). This whole scene is very sad. Infuriated taxpayers end up footing the bills (for the most part) with the average teen having kid(s). These two girls probably won't ask for a handout anytime soon. Still, other teens may be influenced to become parents if they think it's a glamorous and normal thing to do. Maybe Lynne should drop the naive parent and "victim" act altogether!

Did jamie's mom ever think that jamie was a role model for young girls on the nickolodean channel? It's not exactly the thing to brag about when you're 18 and on tv. Her girls want to be in the spotlight so much they should control some of their actions. Palin's daughter is not starring in some tv show and she didn't ask to be in the spotlight. Wake up Lynn, two differnet coins tossed here!!!

One thing that I can say is that we shouldn't be worrying about our tax money going to Pailin's pregnet doughter, what am REALLY WORRY ABOUT IS WHERE IS THE $700 MILLION DOLLARS THAT IS COMMING OUT OF OUR POCKETS TO BAIL WALL STREET IS GOING TO GO. SPECIALLY IF THERE ARE NO STRINGS ATTACHED AND NO COURT OF LAW CAN REVIEW THIS HENRY GUY. PEOPLE APEN YOUR AYES PLEASE!!!

  • Posted By: Twiggy001 @ 09/26/2008 1:26:48 PM

Really, both girls should have known better than to get pregnant. If the guy is to uneducated to protect himself, then the girl should have made sure that this wouldn't happen. What bothers me is if the Palins do win the election, I just hope my tax dollars don't go towards the medical expenses and needs for this child. It is taking all I have just to help my children and grandchildren, I sure don't want to be responsible for someone else.

Mama Spear's must understand that jamie Lynn was an actress and young girls idolizes her and use her as a role model. Bristol on the other hand is living a normal and private life and minding her own business when this situation occurred in her life. She got caught in the middle because her mother was picked to run as a VP of the United States. Totally two different scenario even though the issue involved is the same. Both of them got a bad and nasty treatment from the media. So don't complain. You just need to handle the situation with dignity as Sarah Palin did.

I trhink the situations arre entirely two different things. Jamie Lynn is/was on a tv show and considered a role model to other teens and tweens. The Palin girl was not a celebrity and wouldn't even be in the lime light now if it wasn't for her mother running for vice president

    • Posted By: baybluv @ 09/24/2008 1:47:33 PM

It doesn't matter if she was on television or not. The Palins paraded her and her boyfriend around the stage of the Republican National Convention as if they were the National Poster Teens for Teenage Sex. No different.

'But what does that say about her parents parenting skills? It tells me her parents aren't paying attention to their childrens needs; Believe it or not most young people really do want parents to give them limits.

This is not a question about how good of parents either Ms. Palin or Ms. Spears is. We don't know what education their children did or did not receive. We also don't know what other influences these girls were under and what made them ultimately make the choice to have premarital sex. Do we really know if they used protection or not? Protection is not 100% all of the time. The bottom line is that at any given moment, a 17-year-old child will make a decision that can and will affect their life for better or worse. As parents, we do the best we can to give our children the tools necessary to make smart decisions and then hope and pray that even when they don't make the right choice they can handle the consequences.

I think the most outstanding attirbute of both young women is that they both have chosen to keep their children and become responsible parents. In other words, their parents instilled in them the moral fortitude to deal with the consequences of their choices and actions. For this, I think that whether you like any of them or not they obviously weren't all bad.

Enter Your Comment The parents and grandparents of these girls will be the actual parent. Why? Because a teenager, a child, is herself still developing and in need of parenting. Also, telling your child to substain from sex is not educational. If the girls were better educated about sex , birth control, and reproduction this probably would not have happen. Nothing is 100%, however education empowers.

Why is Jamie Lynn on OK? How did she get celebrity status? Since she is not a celebrity, why did the family not take legal action to keep the entertainment media from stalking her since she is not a real public figure? They like the attention. It's ridiculous. Teenagers should not have children-period. They are not emotionally, psychologically, or spiritually mature enough for the task of parenting. And putting her on the cover of a magazine, as well as flaunting Bristol Palin in the media does promote teenage pregnancy, because a teenage brain is not developed enough to comprehend the ramifications of taking care of a child and therefore sees it as glamorous, cool.

Jamie and Bristol may not have to deal with poverty because of their circumstances, but most teenage pregnancies start from poverty and remain in poverty. Babies should not be having babies!

The Palin family has been having the best of all worlds even when they sin, fib, and cheat. They have tried to turn the world upside down to fit into their weird and scary perception of things. Sooner than later, even colours would no longer match their names as black would become white, and red would become blue - according to the Palins.

  • Posted By: leighjamesleigh @ 09/23/2008 8:09:30 AM

Yes, the Republicans celebrate Palin's daughter's pregnancy but condemn all other teen's pregnancies. It's funny, I've been seeing pregnant hispanic teens all over Allentown and in 25 years, I've never heard anyone nor read any editiorials congratulating them or celebrating their prenancies and the fact that they are "choosing " to keep their babies. I asked the difference between Palin's daughter and these pregnant teens of Allentown, my Republican friend said, "well, they're Puerto Rican." So, if your Palin's pregnant daughter, you're a saint, if you're a pregnant Puerto Rican, you're disgusting. Brilliant.

    Congratulations to the family.

Yup - sometimes birth control fails, but if it is used properly, the odds are ridiculously low for that happening. Birth control pills? 99.99% effective if taken properly. Do these girls brush their teeth every morning? Well, then there is no excuse for missing a pill. Only dismissing the gravity of becoming pregnant would be an explanation. Condoms, used properly? 97% effective. Add spermicidal foam to that and your up to 99%. Add those to taking the Pill properly, well, you're up to, essentially, 100%. I knew this at 16. I knew I didn't want to be pregnant, I didn't want to marry young, I didn't want to have an abortion. But I did want to have sex. It was MY body, and I wanted to have sex. This is what being a teenager is, so let's deal with reality and set our girls up to protect themselves.

Personally, I don't believe in waiting until marriage. I don't think that it is expected of males, NEARLY as much as for females. It is the ultimate double-standard. Girls are supposed to remain "pure" and present their husbands with the ultimate gift, while boys are supposed to "be boys" and to "sew their wild oats". What a load of crap. Throughout history men and society have worked hard to suppress females physically and sexually. If a man marries a virgin and their sex life is miserable, he can excuse affairs and divorce because, of course, she is frigid. It's the woman's fault. The divorce rate could plummet if people were educated going in. Marriage is hard, and long-term marriage is even harder. The virginity is gone in a moment, but the woman's sex life goes on for the rest of her life. I wonder how many affairs and divorces are really based on sexual incompatibility?

If a female wants to explore her sexuality, she can. If she doesn't want to get pregnant, she can. All she has to do is to have good education and realize that it is all up to her. If she doesn't realize this about preventing pregnancy, she'll certainly figure it out once she has that baby, and the "father" is long gone.

    .
GRANDMA SPEARS DIDN'T KNOW IT AT THE TIME, BUT SHE SHOULD NOW KNOW THAT SHE WAS ROLLED OVER BY THE BIGGEST HYPOCRITICAL GROUP IN AMERICA!!

Grandmother Spears Speaks Out: "Jamie Lynn was 'crucified' in the media for her pregnancy, while Bristol Palin was 'celebrated,' says Lynne Spears".

    - - - - - - - -

Duhh!! Well what else do you expect from the hypocritical Evangelical Religious-Right? What else can you expect from "King of the Hypocrites" James Dobson and his "Focus on the Family" and "Family Research Council" organizations?

It was James Dobson's surrogates Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Glen Beck and others to light a torch under Grandma Spears. And Grandma Spears still sent her endorsement money to the same McSame campaign that makes a mockery of people like her daughter Jamie Lynn Spears and Paris Hilton.

It was James Dobson's surrogate Stuart Shepard that broadcast a video asking all evangelicals to pray for "rain of Biblical proportions" on the DNC events at Invesco Mile High stadium. But the Democrats had a historical, successful and record-breaking day with 85,000 celebrants in attendance on a pleasant sun shiny day.

Ironically, the "rain of Biblical proportion" (Hurricane Gustav) did shutdown the first day of McCain's RNC. The RNC never came close to matching the historical scope and wonder of the DNC.

It was James Dobson's Evangelical Religious-Right members to claim that after 19-months of campaign by Senator Obama, they somehow still don't know his policies and don't know from where he is coming. But ironically, these same evangelicals claim they know Sarah Palin within 48-hours of her VP announcement, and support her policies even though she was never heard of by the lower 48 states. Yeah, right!!! Pure hypocrisy!!

James Dobson's Religious-Right is what JESUS (an agent of CHANGE 2000 years ago) fought hard against when he went up against the Religious-Right. 2000 years ago they were called the Pharisees. The Pharisees, much like the Religious-Right today was a bunch of pompous, arrogant, lying, hypocrites that stopped at nothing to destroy the REAL agent of CHANGE.

    GOD Bless America!
    GOD Bless Obama!
    GOD Bless Biden!

Anyone at any time can get pregnant WHILE using protection. Condoms break, sometimes other birth control options are forgotten. One day is all it takes. Don't assume that anyone is uneducated or that they were not using birth control if they got pregnant. If what you are saying is that the ONLY educated response to an un-anticipated pregnancy due to a failure in birth control or birth control methods is termination of the pregnancy then THAT is the uneducated response. Choices mean more than the choice to terminate. Choices also mean you can choose to give birth. While it might not be your personal choice it is a choice and should not be denegrated as only a choice an uneducated person would make. Ah but I forgot, only conservatives can be rigid and unyielding, its not something that a liberal might do so their opinions can never be as totalitarian as that as to impose termination in all cases right?

When girls get pregnant at young ages they run the risk of only being able to identify themselves as mothers. It is especially important this day in age to develop one's intelect and find a way to contribute outside of the home. The father's of the two babies will be able to develop their character, identity, and probably go on to have a career of some sort, because the media makes it look like their role as fathers is not as important. They don't have to deal with the brunt of the questions and they don't have to justify that they got a teenage girl pregnant. They could continue to sow their royal oats and nobody would think twice, while the young mother will be judged at how good of a mother she is as a teenager and her lack of protected sex. This is absolutely preposterous in 2008. Children need their fathers or a father figure in their lives and our country needs to start stressing the importance of fatherhood!
