Witness against Sen. Stevens says he hid the truth
(WASHINGTON) One of the government's witnesses against convicted Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska says he didn't tell the truth on the stand about an immunity deal with the Justice Department in exchange for his testimony. But federal prosecutors said Friday that his current story is the false one.
"I testified to the fact that there was never immunity for me or my family and friends," welder David Anderson said in a November letter to a federal judge placed in court files by Stevens' lawyers. "That is simply not true."
The Justice Department responded quickly, saying the government never made any agreement of immunity for Anderson or any of his family or friends. "Mr. Anderson's statement in his November 2008 letter is not true, and the court is aware that it is not true," government lawyers said.
Stevens' lawyers have asked U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan to hold a hearing on Anderson's charges and to let them investigate it. It was not immediately known when Sullivan would make a ruling.
The Justice Department had no immediate comment.
Stevens, 85 and the Senate's longest-serving Republican, was convicted on seven felony counts of lying on Senate financial disclosure documents to hide hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts and home renovations from millionaire businessman and VECO founder Bill Allen, who is Anderson's uncle.

Comment: If he is a convicted felon now, why is he still eligible to run for senate?

Comment:
Fewer corrupt Republicans mucking up the place is not altogether a bad thing. Too bad we cannot say the same thing about the Democrats.
Rep. Alan Mollohan[D-WVA],remains the subject of a long federal investigation that began in 2006 into trading off federal lands to private contractors for campaign donations and other gifts that include home improvements, similar to Stevens crimes Mollohans personal wealth skyrocketed by directing federal taxpayer money to non-profits,who sank contributions back into a front nonprofit ironically named ''Mollohan''.
Rep.William Jefferson [D-La],remains in Congress despite his indictment and possible future incarceration for
bribery. In a similarity to Stevens,Jefferson was handily re-elected in 2006,yet was not demanded to resign by Obama, the DNC, or the House leadership.
Rep.Charles Rangel[D-NY] is the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. He is under a federal probe and a House Ethics Committee investigation for accepting no-interest loans on a home he owns in the Dominican Republic, failing to register rents he collects from several New York City properties he owns, and charging taxpayers for lodging vehicles in public garages. Improvements by private contractors on the NYC properties, like Stevens, are being investigated for any illegality[to date,NEWSWEAK has never ran an article on this investigation].
Sen.Chris Dodd[D-Conn],the Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee. Dodd is under a probe by a Los Angeles federal grand jury ,and a separate FBI investigation [an Ethics Committee investigation is being called for, with scheduling probably after the election],for being one of the ''Friends of Angelo''.[Angelo Mozilo, the CEO of COUNTRYWIDE Loans, who gave Dodd a sweetheart deal on low/no-interest loans totalling 800,000$]. To date,NEWSWEAK has never run an article on this investigation. Dodds corruption is being covered by his homestate newspaper, the Hartford COURANT.
Sen Bob Menendez [D-NJ],is under a federal probe for accepting illegal kickbacks [North Hudson Action] totalling over 300,000$
Gov. Rod Blagojevich[D-Ill],is under a virtual federal investigation airraid. No fewer than six seperate probes including the biggest one,Operation BOARD GAMES,is going after Blago on federal and state corruption charges, including kickbacks, profiteeering, illegal political appointments of cronies, and pay-to-play schemes also involving Mr.Tony Rezko. The ''Blagojevich portion'' of the BOARD GAMES investigation and criminal trials is set to begin in January 2009 in Chicago.
The more things ''change''eh.....?

Comment: New trend? no, the Republican Party has been the party of hate and corruption since Nixon. He taught them well. Yes, the art has been improved on with each passing Republican regime. Fox news was instrumental in them reaching a higher level. Whoever thought of creating a TV network explicitly to preach hate and violence must have made Benedict Arnold look like little orphan Annie. But even the originator of this anti-american and anti-human network couldn't have foreseen the new heights to which Sean Hannity and Dick Morris would take them.
There is no republican party now, at least not the one you thought existed in the past. It's the Hate Party and is on the way down.
