WOW ! John McCain has done it again he has put his country and the american people first ! he said that he needs to be in washington and even asked obama to join him ( i guess he wanted to show the world that america is always united in a time of crisis ! ) he reminds me of that story of the soldier who was willing sacrificed his life to save his fellow troops by jumping on a hand grenade. this is what McCain did he sacrificed his chance at becoming the president to help save our economic lives GOD BLESS JOHN McCAIN AND GOD BLESS AMERICA ! McCAIN 08 COUNTRY FIRST !

Here are the origins of the current crisis. BOTH PARTIES ARE TO BLAME! But it did start in the Clinton Administration which tried to reverse the effects of RedLining in urban areas by making it easy to buy homes. This was Social Engineering that has run amok. Congress, and particularly the Black Caucus, pushed these policies for votes, influence, and lobbyist cash. Of course speculators and Wall Street took advantage and made things worse. But the qualifications for loans were basically, No down payment, No references, No job security....No problem.
I saw what was happening in the Real Estate business. As long as everybody got paid, nobody really cared if the loan was worthy. RE agents, appraisers, mortgage brokers, underwriters, insurance companies???everyone got their check. Banks made these questionable loans and then promptly sold them to other institutions. Thus, years later, this widespread meltdown.
This Social Engineering concept is exactly what Obama wants to bring to America.
Senator McCain and President Bush both tried to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac but were blocked by Democrats who were the biggest recipients of lobbying largesse.

Wonderful, articulate article. It's amazing that McCain has any chance to win at all, considering the place where the Republicans have brought us in the last 8 years, but sadly, I fear that it's Obama who has very little chance of actually winning the presidency, considering the electoral college, racism, and Republican skill with vote fraud.

Excellent - Bravo to Anna Quindlen for such an articulate column. Although I support Obama 100%, I believe that he has only a remote chance of actually winning the election because of 1) the electoral college 2) pure and simple racism and 3) the Republican Party's superior ability to employ various means of fraud.
I hope Ms Quindlen will be able to write as clearly to help us survive another 4 years with a Republican resident in the White House. Thanks, Norman Baker

Did you hear? McCain has suspended his campaign! Obama really screwed up, McCain said country first, Obama said, I have no plan, no ideas, but if they want some coffee or something I'm sure they'll call me! I mean McCain may be over acting a bit, but Obama looks like an inept dolt... Ooops! The man of great judgment and ideas has neither....

    The presidency was once aspirational.

The most insightful line in a remarkably clear expression of where we stand. Thank you.

    Thank you.

The last paragraph of Anna Quindlen's commentary is the one we all should remember when entering our respective voting booths.

"Senator McCain last week was once again hedging principle in favor of victory. His party has been in power as the country has run aground, yet he and his people try to suggest that the same party with the same people and the same policies will somehow produce different results.

There are Stupid Americans that will fall for all of this and I hope there are more of us than them.

I don't know why i keep reading her articles...they are entirely, too biased and totally unprofessional. This woman is a sepulchre. This woman is also, clearly sour and embittered toward someone or some thing and regardless of how she feels about the president, she has no right to be such a disrespectful and vehement citizen toward her nation's leader. She is the reason we are falling. Rome was not taken down by one leader; rather, it was taken down by it's ravenous citizens. Disagree with our leaders, but be nice (her mother obviously never taught her that). Her comments about not listening to the press are entirely hypocritical and they are her lousy attempt at playing reverse psychology because listening to her and the rest of her left-over hippy friends is exactly what she wants us to do. Some people obviously never left the sixties behind; therefore they parade the same issues and anger as though they are still the only relevant things to whine about. I'm currently undecided on this race, but if Newsweek keeps allowing this woman to write (for whatever reason), I very well may be decided out of disgust for the candidate that could possibly be supported by such a divisive woman. Thanks for helping me in this decision-making process Newsweek.

Anna,,are you basking in the glory of the power this post has given you. I, for one find your writing thought-provoking, honest, balanced and insightful. I will not however make my ballot decision based on what you say alone. I will gather information from a variety of sources and then make an informed decision. So, I'll give you the opportunity to present your views to me just as I do George Will's viewpoints on opposite weeks. But I won't decide on any one commentator's statements as the previous blogger suggests..

Anna, are you basking in the power this reader has given you! I , for one, find your written word to be insightful, honest, thought provoking and fair. But I still would not give your voice that much influence in my ballot casting decisions. I do however appreciate your analysis as one source of my information.

    Pumadoria,
Obama's voting record in the Illinois State Senate is commendable. The use of the "present" vote is quite common in the state senate and it is used for specific political reasons. He stands for a set of values and he sticks to them. Look it up. McCain is willing to do or say anything to become president. He is a changeling, a Zelig, and a shape shifter. At this point, he seems to think that the more confused and manipulated the voter, the more like he will become president. How else can you explain Palin? His behaviour is cynical and disingenuous and unbecoming of a candidate for the highest office in the land.

By choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate, McCain has shown what an irresponsible politician he is. There is nothing about her that makes her qualified to be president. This is the man who will "keep us safe"? He will put someone with absolutely no idea about world politics a heartbeat away fron the presidency. This is not keeping us safe, it is keeping us in great danger. He could have picked from hundreds if not thousands of more qualified people, but he chose her. Any rational thinking person can see that she was picked for her appeal not her abilities. This is a bad joke that the republicans are trying to play on us! Blind Americans will worry about Obama's religion even though he's gone to a christian church for 20 years. They will listen to McCains distortions and Palin's bridge to nowhere and happily vote for the party who has distroyed our economy and tied us up in a war that should have never been waged! We shouldn't be surprized though, these are the same people who voted for George W. Bush not once, but twice!! and look how that's worked out! Enough said!

And that is the central issue. John McCain is a fine and honorable man with an outstanding personal history. However, how can that one man, by himself, change the direction of the Republican Party which has delivered us into this moras of financial ruin and moral ruin, and done so with joy. I believe McCain wants to be the one who changes things, I just don't think his personal power is enough to repair the damange this country has suffered at the hands of the Republican Party. We need another type of change than what he can provide. Would that he had won in '04.........

  • Posted By: Pumadoria @ 09/24/2008 12:02:27 PM

I strongly object to Senator McCain being called a shape-shifter when that term was invented for Obama. He learned to be all things to all people by voting "Present" 130 times in Illinois. Most recently, that spectre is evident in his Fisa vote, Campaign financing, gun control, abortion rights, born-alive protection, meeting with dictators unconditionally, Russo-Georgia conflict, Iranian Kuds force depiction, William Ayers (just a guy in my neighborhood)...the list goes on.
The MSM is shocked, shocked that people still think Obama is a Muslim. Perhaps if he was less shape-shifting about it. His father was Arab/Muslim and his Kenyan family are practicing Muslim. His stepfather was Muslim and Barack was registered as Muslim in two Indonesian schools where he received religious instruction. His Church in Chicago preaches Black Liberation Theology which is distinctly anti-white, and anti-American. It continues a symbiotic relationship with Farrakhan's Nation of Islam. Jeremiah Wright had Nation of Islam bodyguards at the National Press Club. So forgive our confusion. Certainly after viewing tapes of Wright and Phleger, this was not a Christianity many of us are familiar with.

This time, Anna made me cry. She has spoken eloquently for me--as a woman, as a mother, as an American, as a human being--for many years. And I thank her and ask her to continue her journey of truth seeking and telling.

    Fool Me Once...

When Senator Clinton dropped out of the campaign, I started leaning towards Senator McCain until the "lies, misinformation, and blatant distortions" went off the charts!

Finally, when Senator McCain vowed to "defeat evil" during his appearance at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church, it finally donned on me that he had lost his military bearing which, to me, dictates that those who have served in the military adhere to the utmost levels of duty, honor, and professionalism in whatever they do.

As a former military officer, I thought that there were some things that he wouldn't consciously be a part of, but I was obviously wrong. The dog whistle politics and outright lies are unconscionable.

Former HP CEO Carly Fiorina can be accused of not towing-the-Republican-line when she said Governor Palin doesn't have the experience to run a major company. However, I appreciate her refusal to compromise her full integrity by telling an outright lie about Governor Palin's qualifications.

For those that didn't know, defeating "evil" is the province of GOD...and for the non-believer, just know, it's "Above Your Pay-Grade!"

No Way. No How. No McCain!

Good for you :D. It's not easy to see the candidate you support lose, but it's great that you worked up the guts to stick with the team. You're a lot better in character compared to the "democrats" that are staying with McCain.

I agree with Ms. Quinlan that now is the time to focus on the issues, getting our information from many sources. That however is the problem. Sources that were once objective have become completely bias. It is impossible to read Newsweek and Time without filtering the very open slant towards Obama. Even in this article, it is only McCaine that is spoken of negatively. After years of subscribing to Newsweek we are canceling ourr

    • Posted By: tc125231 @ 09/21/2008 11:11:21 PM

Liberal bias is a joke. The media is so scared of the Republicans that they are unable to call a lie a lie. Look at the big deal they made out of Obama's church and pastor. Palin's far stranger pastor is off limits.

Besides that, as a user of the Internet you have many independednt --and yse, Virginia, Republican --sources of information open to you, as well as many that are local or for some other reson have no particular partisan ax to grind.

However, many people do not WANT more information --they want to WHINE about liberal bias, and vote for whoever makes them feel comfy.

Well dear, does the disintegration of the economy make you feel comfy? Are you game to finance some addition trillion dollar plus wars on IOUs?

Are you OK with the upper 1/10 of 1% of the income earners getting all the benefit from the majority's increased productivity and hard work?

Wake up and act like a responsible adult. Vote however you want --but don't make sniveling excuses for it.

"Do what thou wilt." But you ARE responsible for your actions. You WILL be held accountable.

Jesus told you so. So did every other major religion.

      • Posted By: paproudmom @ 09/22/2008 12:57:06 PM

That is absolutely absurd. Liberal bias is becoming so widespread that I feel the press is just an extension of the Democratic Party. What I am not comfortable with is people thinking they are owed the wages of others when they did not do the work. Having a business, my husband has averaged 80 hours a week at work. He has done so for 25 years or more. Because he is successful I guess that means he is not one of the "real" workers. We both came from average backgrounds, put ourselves through college, and work hard. Yet many would say we need to pay even more taxes so the "real" workers. Who maybe are working 40 hours a week. can benefit from our hard work. since we are the ones who are not productive. I don't mind helping those who need help. But we do not owe every person part of our wages. Many are content to just work a 40 hour a week job and then relax. This is fine but again, we don't need to be taxed more for them.

        • Posted By: geogaddi_17 @ 09/23/2008 9:08:18 PM

It probably pisses off the media that they can't get decent interviews with Palin because she's being shielded by McCain's "Straight Talk" campaign. Nothing really "straight" about that....

    • Posted By: Independant Voter @ 09/21/2008 1:19:07 PM

That's a weak card to play. I'm tired of hearing about "liberal bias" - it's wrong. If anything - I would fault Time and Newsweek for being too conservative and too cozy with McCain and Palin. The reporters have been remarkably fair overall. If you just want your conservative doctrine served up with no balance - then go listen to Fox!

  • Posted By: 38thParallel @ 09/22/2008 9:39:22 PM

Give It To Me Straight, No Chaser...

If "Fair and Balanced" means every time Senator McCain is caught telling a blatant untruth, you have to find or create an untruth told by Senator Obama, the American people will remain uninformed, confused, and relying on old habits for choosing a candidate.

I'm not surprised at recent reports that a significant portion of U.S. citizenry will not vote for Senator Obama because he's African American.

The average U.S. citizen reads at the 8th-grade level.

In a Democracy as old as America's, the idea that a significant portion of the U.S. population harbors an ideology so racist, it could potentially doom the entire country to remain in a state of fragmented pre-Civil War ideology while other nations move rapidly into the future.

The irony will be...when those Christians get to Heaven, and GOD says, "By the way, I've walked the Earth as many people including a Black Man, and I plan to treat you, as you treated me."

When they complain, "...but GOD you should have told me."

GOD will respond, "My messenger told you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

        1) Comprehensible
        2) Isn't in ALL CAPS OMG!!!!!1111
        3) Common sense, like something that doesn't include "OBAMA=TERRORIST LOL" or "barack HUSSEIN Obama!"

  • Posted By: timrogers @ 09/23/2008 6:58:56 PM

American voters do not want details, or policy papers or solutions. They want show biz. They want rallies and speeches full of partisan preaching. They worship personalities and ideologies not ideas They want good guys in white hats against bad guys in black ones. They want ads that destroy the opposiiton while waving the flag. Don't tell them what needs to be done; tell them what is wrong with the other guy. This has worked in politics forever. We keep electing the same type of cloned politicians from both parties and we somehow expect a different result when they get to Washington. We complain when nothing changes. Then we re- elect the same clone. In this election the outcome will be the same, either the old, standard white model clone or the new and improved black model clone will win. Chalk another one up to the everlasting ignorance, prejudice and gullibility of the voters.

Are you against Freedom of the Press? Do you hate free speech? You just spent one worthless paragraph attacking a columnist for expressing their opinion. You were not forced to read the article or buy the magazine - so instead of the personal attack garbage - why don't you try to intelligently decipher what you dis-liked in the article itself? Is it that hard for you to be civil?
