As much as you hate Bush, your comments supports exactly why people shouldn't vote for Senator Obama, who I personally like. However, I have not heard anything substantial or solid from his side. His popularity is solely based upon his likability. Is he a good person? It appears so. Does he have charisma? Obviously. Does he have intelligence? Enough to market his ability to get masses to follow him. But what about his experience? His voting record? His actual plans for office? These things have been unclear and shady from the beginning. Like I said, I personally think Senator Obama is a good man who sincerely wants to help America and change it for the better; however, I cannot honestly say I have any confidence in him knowing how to do that. Saying is one thing, doing is another.

How about this - since you "like" Obama as you say - is it better to have less expierience - but be right about all the big issues (Iraq, economy, regulation, etc...) - or is it better to have 26 years expierience in Washington - but be wrong on almost every big issue (Iraq, de-regualtion of banking AND Health Care, etc...). If you really "like" Barack as you say, - then do the right thing and vote for the smarter guy! Otherwise - stop pretending to be on the fence - and be honest!

Once again Anna has proven why her publication is becoming the laughingstock of print media. They just can't seem to help themselves.

If being smarter and more clever then everyone else in print is being a laughingstock - then go ahead and laugh.

Thanks Anna for rising above the top and delivering the best insight once again!

The last three paragraphs should be read aloud over and over again to everyone during the rest of this election cycle. I agree--I don't want a president to be my friend--please give me a leader who is smart--smarter by far than me, reflective, thoughful, and who knows how to call on all the other brains in the country. Oh, do we need some smarts in the White House. Now is the time to be forward thinking---what will this world by like for my children and grandchildren if we don't start electing people because of their abilities, vision and who knows how and on what basis to make decisions. I don't ever expect to meet the President and have dinner or a drink, but I do expect him or her to do what is best for my heirs when leading our beloved country. I"m sending this article to all my friends, of both parties.

Goldman Sachs shares $18.8bn bonus pool. Average payout for 30,000 staff is put at $600,000.

Rival, Lehman, is expected to reveal profits and bonuses tomorrow. Goldman Sachs staff began celebrating a record year for bonuses today as its rival Lehman Brothers awarded Richard Fuld, the bank's chief executive, a $35 million Christmas present.

Thousands of bankers on both sides of the Atlantic at Goldman were told today of their share of what is expected to be an $18.8 billion bonus pool, worth on average $600,000 for each of their near 30,000 staff world-wide.

Last year Goldman paid out $16.5 billion in total bonuses, worth on average $640,000. ??????.

The average is extremely misleading--do you really think the mailroom guys and receptionists and assistants or entry-level accountants get that kind of money? The very top executives get the lions share and the ones at the bottom of the hierarchy get some crumbs. I worked in that environment some years ago, so I'm familiar with how it's distributed.

In response to woaitheo. If an article, which in my opinion is fair, is the barometer by which you measure such an important event as voting for the president of this great county, it is a sad commentary on your life. It's just a point-of-view. Also, stop pretending you did not already know you were going to vote for McCain, you are just looking for an excuse to justifiy a bad choice.

Intellect is easy to belitted when so many Americans do not have access to a good education, subsequently intellect becomes a threat, a reminder of one's lesser station in life. That is why George W. was so likable, he has an average learning ability, however look at where that has lead the country. America needs to learn to expect more from its leaders, especially in regards to integrity.

  • Posted By: MAZees @ 09/23/2008 10:52:59 AM

Sadly, I'm not sure we will ever have a truly great President again, if the benchmark is "who you'd most like to have a beer with", or "boxers or briefs?" Washington and Lincoln, by all accounts, were both intelligent and principled, but willing to hear the other side as well, and great believers in bringing the nation together. Our current president has been a disaster, and yet we still hear that those who are intelligent, or work hard to attain a world-class education are "elitists". Until we demand more from our leaders - more intelligence, more thoughtfulness, more vision, more bipartisanship, more long-term focus, and more accountibility - then we will continue to get what exactly what we unfortunately voted for.

No candidate is ever "perfect" for the job as president. But it is clear to me which of the current 2 candidates, although a bit young, embodies the most elements of a potential "great leader".

The Wall Street mess, the unnecessary and disastrously expensive Iraq war, Katrina, given these, which all were the result of totally inept or absent leadership for the past eight years, why would anyone vote for any Republican? I'll tell you why: because the American people stupidly admire mediocrity. That's the only explanation that I can think of.

  • Posted By: PSM0001 @ 09/22/2008 8:58:15 PM

As usual, Anna has it right. But the GOP has long ago learned that if you say something enough times, everyone starts to believe it, even if its a bare faced lie. They are trying that this year with the Bridge to Nowhere, and McCain just might be able to pull it off by now saying he's been for more regulation all along.

Quindlen acts as though the Democrats have not held the chairmanships of both houses of Congress'powerful banking, regulatory, ways and means, and finance committees for the last two years.
Liberals are trying to have it both ways. In one area, they note that Bush had ''eight months''to see the value of an al Qaeda terrorist threat and then do nothing about it.
Yet liberals have had total control of Congress for over twice as long as this period and similar warning signs were right in front of them long before the actual meltdown [and in the same city], and no-one acted, least of all,Barack Obama.[who arrayed himself against the 2005 Housing Regulatory Reform Act because it demanded oversight of FREDDIE and FANNIE]. We have the pages of debate in Congress itself to gauge how effective any ''reform''was going to be. If minority Democrats were against it in 2003-06 as the minority, how much more so would they stand against regulation once they became committee chairmen in their turn? Dodd wanted nothing to do with regulation of FANNIE.Neither did Frank, nor Rangel, yet all of these are chairmen of the nations most powerful financial committees in Congress.
How is ''getting the country back on track'',using Gergenese, going to take place when the lies and the ''Roveian''games continue? Over at todays FACTCHECK,Obama is taken to task for ''false'' fearmongering related to Social Security. In Tennessee,it looks like the feds have finally got their man in the Palin computer hacking crime. Bad luck that the hacker is the son of Obama supporter and Democrat congressman Kernell of the same state. In Michigan, four Obama supporters including the son of a Democrat congresswoman are arrested on felony vandalism charges when they slashed tires on GOP voter registration vehicles. The YOU TUBE ''Palin Was A Seccessionist'' video has been traced to David Axelrods pals at WINNER and ASSOCIATES,an ad firm.[if a more concrete tie can be made between WINNER and Axelrod, then a FEC violation has thus been committed]. Actress Sarah Bernhart,a staunch Obama supporter, was caught in audio railing at Palin in some of the most vile, racist language that anyone outside of the Klan has ever produced in this nation. The Democrats are out-Roving Rove. Quindlen is a partisan creature, and only displays half the loaf. The other half however,is becoming increasingly dark and even deranged in its content.

You could not be more wrong - but it's hardly worth the effort to explain this to you because you are so delusional! Republicans have held the White House for 8 years and Congress for 14 out of the last 16 years! The Dems can not fix all of your messes over night. Stop attacking the Dems - your guys were in control! Stop distorting the facts - it's pretty simple!

      • Posted By: Lee Holmes @ 09/22/2008 7:38:06 PM

Nonsense. The party at the helm of any branch of government must take reponsibility for their actions. Now. Not ''four''or ''six'' of ''eight'' or ''eighteen ''years ago. A captain that has run his ship aground is the one subject to a hearing. Not the one who was his predecessor. The Democrats are faulted for showing lackluster leadership when they promised Americans they were going to ''drain the swamp''and promise a ''new era of government in Washington''. We got neither. You will be reminded that the Democrat chairman of the Senate Banking Committee [Dodd],recieved sweetheart loans interest deals from the subprime lender COUNTRYWIDE. You will be reminded that the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee[Rangel],is the subject of a federal investigation.
Is THIS the ''new era''we were promised by the Democrats?

  • Posted By: Lucy54 @ 09/22/2008 7:22:52 PM

Sadly, many American voters won't review the facts and are willing to overlook the lies and distortions of McCain/Palin either because they approve her pro-life position or believe a hot-tempered former POW is qualified to lead the country in a time of war, regardless of the fact that he was at the bottom of his academy class and spent most of the war in a cell. I was shocked to see the stats of how many Americans won't vote for a brilliant, rational, capable, even-tempered, experienced Presidential candidate just because he's black.

Excellent article - taking personal responsibility and making yourself an educated member of the electorate should always be the most important part of our elections. Hopefully we can see past the smoke and mirrors and get it right this time.

Thank you, Anna. Great column with lots of food for thought. I wish that the things you so skillfully pointed out were not true. But alas, I fear that they are.
I feel as if the only thing I can do is keep on going -- one foot in front of the other. And keep up the special prayers I've constructed that ask that the best for the job prevails. Someone in these comments asked what they were to do if McShapeShifter et al wins...both in 2000 and again in 04 I swore I was going to leave the country and go live somewhere else. But it never happened - I have no intention to even try to live in a foreign country unless my entire family agrees to going with me. It leaves me with the dictum of Gandhi on my car's bumper sticker - we must be the change we want to see in the world. And that is a full time job. Thank you again.

Younger women need honesty from older women...

Given the highly competitive nature of today's global economy and workforce, having a child before you graduate from High School is not something to strive for. It is not the "model."

For years, the Republican Party gave us a "model" of the American family as a "Man and a Woman, Married, with or without children." Their model for accelerated prosperity included being a college graduate and gainfully employed."

The Republican Party even demonized "Murphy Brown", who played a "rich, middle-aged, college educated, single white women," for having a child out of wedlock!

Now, it's okay for an "unemployed, 17-year old, unmarried female High School student" to be paraded across the RNC convention stage because she "plans" to get married?

Poor, single, unwed, and inner-city mothers who haven't graduated from High School should feel vindicated by the change in the Republican Party's "model" of the American Family.

Thank you, Senator Clinton...No Way, No How, No McCain!

You want an honest opinion from an older women. No, having a child at 17 is not eacy. It is really hard. It will delay your future plans for awhile most likely. It can also be a blessing. Sometimes what is hard makes you stronger. Taking the "easy" way out is not always best for you. Sometimes learning that plans may have to be adjusted but can still happen makes one far more flexible and prepared for difficulties that may come later. Being accountable can actually be an asset. No it is not the best case situation for a 17 year old girl to become pregnant, but it happens. The reaction to the situation is even more important. I hope this young girl becomes a great mother and has a great life. Hopefully what she learns along the way will be a good example for her child.

I'm not wild about Obama, but I am terrified of McCain. His total opposition to any kind of regulation has contributed to the financial mess we are now in. If he has a chance to "deregulate" health care, we will be fighting for our life literally instead of just financially. And his gunslinger mentality may inadvertantly land us in WW3. The all attack all the time style does not bode well for the bipartisan work that is going to be needed to clean up the mess we are in on all fronts, not to mention the multinational and cross cultural effort needed to restore our position as a respected world leader. Yikes!

    • Posted By: paproudmom @ 09/22/2008 12:31:02 PM

McCain is not against all regulations. He wants limited and smart regulations. Less is more is often the case. We don't need tons of bad regulations, rather limited and well thought out ones. Actually candidates that advocate more and more government are the truly scary ones.

ANNA, YOU ARE RIGHT. THE DEBATES ARE CRUCIAL AND MAY DETERMINE THE RESULT OF THE ELECTION. I WAS AN ELECTED JUDGE FOR TWENTY YEARS AND I PARTICIPATED IN MANY DEBATES. THE REPUBLICAN TRICK WILL BE TO LIE THEIR WAY THROUGH AS MUCH AS THEY CAN WITHOUT DETECTION. THANK GOD FOR THE INTERNET AND A COUPLE OF TV PERSONALITIES SUCH AS RACHAEL MADDOW AND KEITH WHO ARE PRO-
OBAMA. THIS SHOULD NEUTRALIZE THE REPUBLICAN FAVORATE TACTIC: HALF-TRUTHS AND HALF-LIES. A PRIME EXAMPLE OF WHAT I MEAN IS THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE. PALIN WAS HAFL TRUTHFUL, BUT FAILED TO CLARIFY WHO STOPPED THE PROJECT FIRST. HOW ABOUT THE ILLOGICAL STATEMENT IN WHICH SHE CLAIMED THAT ALASLKA PRODUCES 20% OF THE ENERGY FOR AMERICA! HOW ABOUT McCAIN'S STUPID REMARK ABOUT HOW HE WOULD FIRE THE DIRECTOR OF THE S.E.C IF HE WERE PRESIDENT. THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO BE IN THE LOOKOUT FOR: LIES....WHAT? WHAT ARE ASKING? DO I WANT TO VOTE FOR THE PALIN-McCAIN TICKET TO NOWHERE? HELL NO! THANKS, BUT NO THANKS! HASTA LA VISTA CARNALES!

    • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 09/22/2008 7:17:16 AM

But Obama cant DO this without lies, half truth and WHOLE truths of his own, and a tire gauge!
What will be amazing is that for several days after the debate liberals who watched the debate will believe he did great! For a few days... they thought Kerry and Gore where great! For a few days.

      • Posted By: paproudmom @ 09/22/2008 12:25:54 PM

What I find frightening is that someone who admires hatemongers like Rachel Maddow and her male counterpart Keith was a judge. Anyone who believes that the Republicans are bad and the Democrats are good is not even rational. No wonder our court systems are such a mess!

  • Posted By: SusanKne @ 09/22/2008 11:28:03 AM

Yes we do need the most intelligent thoughtful President and Vice President to make the decisions affecting so much in this country led astray by the current President and Vice President. May the Debates have substance and intelligence behind the answers given. May the November vote reflect this. Susan

Thank you for telling us, citizens living in the rubble, that we need to think for OURSELVES again. The President asks our Congress to take our money to preserve an uncontrolled financial parasite. We can't cut the cancer without amputating our own hearts, BUT we can see it for what it is and call it what it is. Then, we can think and speak of ways to starve the bloodsuckers. What's good for Sarah Palin and the people who use her as a decoy is NOT good for the nation. Thank you, Anna.

More Greed .... Change? The country needs some changes from this self dealing lot.

    Bloomberg 11/18 2007
Shareholders in the securities industry are having their worst year since 2002, losing $74 billion of their equity. That won???t prevent Wall Street from paying record bonuses, totaling almost $38 billion. That money, split among about 186,000 workers at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch & Co., Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and Bear Stearns Cos., equates to an average of $201,500 per person, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The five biggest U.S. securities firms paid $36 billion to employees last year. ???..

  • Posted By: heatha76 @ 09/22/2008 9:49:13 AM

Thank you, Anna! This presidential election has not been based on any substance whatsoever. Instead, it's back to mudslinging and diversionary tactics to avoid discussing what really matters. Bring on the debates. It's time for change. This country is one step away from careening into a nuclear war and the great depression. We need change and we need the candidates to be serious about the issues.
