A Gloomy Vista for Microsoft

Hiring a TV star from the 1990s to fix Vista's reputation only adds to the impression that Microsoft is in a time warp.

Owning a computer repair companyand respecting Microsoft to taking us where we would not have gone. I have to agree that 3 out of 4 of my customers do not like Vista, I mean really do not like Vista. I have seen many switch over to Macs, which is unfortunate since I dont work on Macs. I just went to a Doctor Customers who had bought a vista laptop 8 months before, she said she really doesnt use it, she used her OLDER XP because she just didnt like vista, I hear that so much, but we were able to switcj the vista over to XP and wow it was quick

This article is slanted. The author chooses to perpetuate the notion that harware and OS are interchangeable. A fair comparison is to understand that Apple OSX runs well only on Apple hardware, while Windows of any flavor runs well on most any hardware that will load it.

Windows, as the new campaign shows, is the workhorse of the computer world, while OSX is the choice of a specific niche user base, and by people who are bamboozled by hipster ads.

Yeah. I have a 24" iMac on my desk. It runs Vista Ultimate in bootcamp. It runs beautifully. Nice hardware. Vista+iMac=good. That's because, in the real business world, the Apple supplied OSX operating system is useless for anything but loading my iPod.

I use Vista, and am pretty satisfied. I think, it is better than Windows XP.

Can someone tell me why Microsoft is putting out such lame commercials? Totally stupid and what the heck does it convince me about wanting to use thier product.

MAC requires "real" programmers, not "wannabes". And it's stable. GUI on top of Linux. Which is UNIX which is what AT&T runs the old fashioned landline phone system on. Never had to reboot to make a phone call? Now you know why.

    • Posted By: crme @ 09/25/2008 9:04:40 PM

Not disagreeing with you at all, but your comment about the phone company reminded me about the time a few months ago when a "third-party vendor" at our local phone switching station accidentally unplugged the wrong cable. It took SIX HOURS to reboot the system. Meanwhile, our entire county, including 911 systems, all cell services, utility companies and all emergency services had absolutely no phone service at all, whatsoever.

Granted, that has only happened once in a century or so, but to answer your question (sort of): Yes, I have had to reboot to make a phone call. And it wasn't pleasant.

Would someone please tell me what Vista's pluses are that it should supplant XP?

I am just an ordinary puter user... no techie qualifications at all... bought my first PC in 1982 and do simple things like email, word processing my writing & editing for my business, reading news and issues here instead of TeeVee, googling, and creating websites. I love XP, especially pro, (which allows me multiple windows that don't replace one I am also working with).

Only two hassles, but it would be worse from my experience with Vista: 1) having to increase memory and add hardware because of the increasingly megabyte-heavy sites I tap into for my research (especially dimbot blogs with one keyword from my searches in them but nothing more than the trivial ramblings of a brain-dead exhibitionist stranger); and 2) having constantly to try to acquire adequate/expensive anti-malware that are not keeping up with the mentally defective hackers spreading viruses and worms and spam wherever they can.

Why doesn't Microsoft deal with REAL problems... like creating programs to track hackers...(and foster laws to prosecture them big time)... instead of coming up with fancy and useless programs like Vista. I wouldn't "down"grade to Vista on a bet.

Get Vista and in about 16 months Windows 7 will be out and one has to start over. Why not just stay with XP until Windows 7?

  • Posted By: Tervvo @ 09/24/2008 10:22:07 AM

Of course you don't mention that these machines are running fine with windows XP

I commented earlier about my lenovo laptop on which I run Vista and Linux. Vista is much slower and unreliable and sometimes refuses to wake up from sleep mode. (I don't use hibernate because it just takes too long.) Linux ALWAYS works. Same hardware. Go figure. I agree that MS has a tougher job making their s/w work with hundreds of h/w platforms. That was the tradeoff that they willingly took, so that cannot whine about it. If Linux can do it, with it's mishmash of h/w, s/w, and overlapping standards, MS should be able with all their resources. Again, I recognize that Linux is not for everyone, but you cannot blame the h/w.

if a laptop does not power on or restore from hibernation, that's more likely the hardware manufacturer's fault NOT the operating system.

Obviously Daniel Lyons is incapable of intellectual thought or the ability to do true analysis. Lets ask some questions we would expect a true journalist to ask. . . well, ok, a true journalist in the old sense of the word "journalist".

    1. How many Macs are being sold and then the users immediately load boot camp or some other dual boot/virtualization utility? I am considering buying a Mac . . .to run Vista.

    2. What are the specs on the hardware being shown? Where in the process was this hardware platform? AN early beta? It was new. My suspicions lie with the hardware manufacturer.

    3. I upgraded a pre-vista machine to Vista. And I love it. The biggest isse? No Aero. Second biggest issue? the machine spontaneously shuts down. Bot of these are issues with the Compaq design (crappy video hardware for the former, overheating for the latter issue). Issues with the hardware manufacturer, not the OS.

Ultimately, Microsoft has a much more complex job. They must handle the half-baked hardware of many manufacturers. Apple controls both hardware and OS - what a luxury!

Most of the blame for Vista's slow acceptance rests on the shoulders of Microsoft's "partners". They needed a two by four upside the head to convince them that their foot dragging in developing Vista drivers was going come back and bite them on the ass. Most have gotten religion and Vista works pretty well on modern hardware. It'll even run on a four year old laptop, contrary to the claims of the laptop manufacturer. But there is no question that with updated hardware (core duo and lots of memory, both quite inexpensive by the way), Vista is a step up from XP and competitive with Leopard.

Don't you get it?! Vista is Microsoft's "New" Coke and XP is their Coke "Classic"! Brilliant marketing strategy as XP sales have increased. (Too bad about the R&D and marketing costs for Vista, as well as the bad press.) I'll stick with my Macs. That's probably what Jerry Seinfeld is saying too!

I am still upset about vista not being able to run my old HP printer. Under XP, the HP software allowed a complete scan and digitizing of documents to either convert them in PDF or in MSWords and, as well, a proper maintenance of the printer function. Vista Home Premium does not allow this. You must use the scanning software developed for Vista and it is a real mess. In addition talk about stealing i.e. blocking an HP perfectly working software and offering a real piece of sh??? as an alternative.

    • Posted By: jabberwolf @ 09/21/2008 11:34:00 AM

COPERNIC - You think its MS's fault that your older HP printer does not work? Ok in that one previous sentence, how many companies did I mention? So now that you have your thinking cap on now, why would you assume it's Microsofts problem to write an HP driver for Vista for an HP products? Its HP's fault. HP though sometimes, does not always write a new driver for a new OS, for an older HP product, and especially not for a at home user product. HP is a vendor, its their decision to support older hardware for newer operating systems. They usually dont except for perhaps products used in businesses/offices.

      • Posted By: Copernic @ 09/23/2008 5:40:18 PM

JABBERWOLF :You are in error in blaming HP. Just read all comments in this column. You will ealize that most issues with Vista have to do with compatibility to existing software or hardware. It is clear to me that Microsoft did not bother to work coherently with other software or hardware producers. The result has been that most of these partners did not develop drivers or cards etc to make their product compatible with Vista. This was clearly an error b y Microsoft to expect that they would all jump on the bandwagon to support an OS that has very little improvement over XP.

I have a Lenovo notebook with Vista. It has never crashed, in eight months of hard use. What is with that??!! Sleeps perfectly. Wakes perfectly. I have used OSX a lot. Crashes on me all the time. Am I blessed? Am I the Chosen One? What is going on??!! Seriously!

  • Posted By: jsteig @ 09/23/2008 4:38:45 PM

I don't get this whole "Vista doesn't work" thing. I know I'm not statistically significant but I have a Lenovo notebook with Vista and it hasn't crashed once in 8 months of hard use. Sleeps perfectly. Wakes perfectly. Always works. I've used OSX and it crashes on me all the time. Am I blessed, the Chosen One or something????

I love my Mac, and never want Apple to gain significant market share. That way, I can enjoy my virus-free computer that doesn't nag me, hog resources, or waste my time. It doesn't make any difference to me that everyone else wants to stay in the dark ages, and let their computers make them their bitch.

  • Posted By: creitzclan @ 09/23/2008 12:18:06 AM

With apple you normally pay more for a computer that has less in it that you would get from a PC, is it worth it? No! Recently I purchased an HP for about $1700.00 For an apple computer with a similar configuration I would have had to pay nearly $2500.00. Be informed before you buy.

I have 5 PCs in my home, All with Vista. They run great and always have.

    • Posted By: alfacanguro @ 09/23/2008 4:11:05 PM

You obviously don't value your time. After years of having to spend too much of my spare moments as the Computer Guy for our household network, I've dumped all 5 PCs and replaced them with 4 Macs. I can now enjoy my free time enjoying my family and hobbies. It's the difference between owning a Yugo or a Japanese car.

    • Posted By: maxbianco @ 09/23/2008 12:26:59 AM

No no no, I believe you're figuring the cost of all that virus protection software you HAVE TO BUY before you even turn your PC on.... that trash is not needed on a mac so in reality...minus that virus software stuff... the price is the same.
I promise, you feel much better once you own a mac!! hahahahaha

      • Posted By: creitzclan @ 09/23/2008 12:34:38 AM

        What? Huh? Um....what?

        • Posted By: summerstime @ 09/23/2008 1:15:29 AM

Vista's Defender is actually robust...and a complaint from those who have to tell their pc's when it's ok to allow malware to damage their computers is bogus...a couple of seconds to click a button is worthwhile to me when it comes to sparing my laptop from the wrath of malicious authors. Norton 360 costs a mere $60 a year and has allowed me to sleep well at night knowing I need not worry.

And don't start an argument about the Mac not needing to defend against hackers. We all know that when 90% of users are running Windows, then 90% of virus authors will tailor their code to Windows. If the Mac becomes prevalant, then the hackers will begin attacking the Mac in force. Few direct their worms towards the Linux platform because FEW use Linux.

          Let the hating begin.

A laptop that would not start - that is probably the hardware or the BIOS. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del before the computer starts is stupid.

    • Posted By: alfacanguro @ 09/23/2008 3:52:38 PM

The story sounds fake, and it probably is. Why would a computer mfr exec not make sure that his product is at peak performance when introducing it to a journalist. Makes no sense. It also raises questions about the author's technical knowledge of computers.

  • Posted By: BrownFoxNine @ 09/23/2008 3:43:39 PM

LOL, I bought a breand new Laptop from Dell and it shipped with Vista. Straight out of the box it crashed! Ended up wuiping the HD and reloading with Linux. Problem solved!
