A Gloomy Vista for Microsoft

As a Professional Technician for 13 years, and MCSE certified, I am a bit confused at how Windows Vista was to blame for a laptop not powering on. The operating system would not be required for the laptop to simply ???power on??? so therefore whether the laptop was preloaded with Windows XP, Windows Vista, or no operating system at all, it should have at least powered on and loaded the PC manufacturer???s bios. This in fact would lead me to believe that something was wrong with the laptop itself and in-fact not with the operating system. Especially if, by removing the laptop battery and reattaching, the laptop then powered on. It is misleading information released through the media to PC users that leads to a ???dislike??? in Windows operating systems. If you recall, in 2001 when Windows XP was initially released, many business and home users were reluctant to make that switch from Windows 98. So we see the same repetitiveness this time around that we have seen over and over again when a new operating system is released.

Windows Vista has many advantages over Windows XP and those are what needs to be brought out to the users that do not understand.

Since you believe that users need to be made aware of how great Vista is, please tell us what those advantages are.

Anyone, and I mean anyone who thinks that Vista is a good operating system is an idiot as it applies to computers.

As to the idiotic comments made by rlewiswv, you do realize that Vista doesn't work with any of my software or my hardware, Yes/No? Patches aren't available, security online sucks. I am still reluctant to use XP over 98 because XP didn't work either, and I had to buy new hardware. Is this your real interest, for everyone to invest in new hardware and software just to have the "privilege" to use Window's Vista? Are you an idiot or just insane? (rhet.)

"New hardware for the privilege" If your hardware is running 98 and will not work with XP then do yourself a favor and upgrade man! Hardware is so cheap nowadays it actually does not make sense NOT to upgrade. XP was a fantastic OS and Vista is on track to be even better (just download all the updates). I have been running Vista for over a year at home and work and have had only minimal performance issues in the beginning, but, nothing worth getting upset about.

If my professional software, which costs hundreds to thousands of dollars to replace doesn't work, do you still think it is nothing to be concerned about?

      • Posted By: mbronner @ 09/22/2008 9:57:13 PM

I'm running XP, not 98, and VIsta doesn't work with most of my professional software. I'm to understand that Vista doesn't work with most of my hardware, some of which is less than two years old.
I went through this same dilemma when going from 98 to XP. I also know a seriously smart computer scientist who wouldn't use 98 because 95 worked so well for them that when 98 came out, he was seriously reluctant to trust Microsoft and he has always built his own computers. It took Microsoft how long to correct the porosity of Internet Explorer, such that many people including myself use Mozilla now as a much securer browser.

98 percent of the comments are positive, seeming to indicate Vista is a functional product. Yet you still use 98 because XP doesn't work? I expect you think you know more about computers than you actually do. Having done computer support for 20 + plus years, I find folks like yourself, my best customers.

      • Posted By: mbronner @ 09/22/2008 10:03:06 PM

I am running XP, albeit reluctantly, because I needed it for compatibility with my office computer. My experience with computers began in 1969 with Fortran and running a University computer.
From there to an Apple II, which I wrote software programs, including a revised version of one of the first database programs. If you honestly think that continuing to buy new software and hardware just to work with a new operating system is a good thing, than I'm guessing that you realize that Microsoft is the company that gave you a job repairing their lousy computers, so naturally you will defend them. The fact that you repair these computers indicates that these computers require a lot of maintenance. I've never had someone else repair my computers, but I'm sure if I do have someone else work on them, it won't be you/

I have used a computer daily for 30 years, I run a large IT department and I have NEVER seen anything as bad as Vista. MAJOR incompatibilities with older software that we rely on to run the business daily, MAJOR incompatibilities with Micro$loths own pervious operating systems. MS support is HORRIBLE. Vista may be fine for the stay at home crowd with nothing to do all day except surf the net and play games but for business they are a disaster. I run nothing but macs at home and they never crash, they work flawlessly 99.9 percent of the time, they are actually a joy to use. Smooth, intuitive, hard working... if you have any real world work that needs to be done without constantly dealing with a glitchy, buggy, needy operating system, get a mac. They just work!

Microsoft just had the wrong mentality. They thought people were looking for all these features and would be OK with more bloatware that might force a system upgrade because of increased requirements, when only a minority fell into that category. Meanwhile, the huge casual-user installed base had memories about how AWFUL Windows Me was and how it kept crashing not only programs but forcing reboots, so that when XP arrived and was more stable they didn't want to let it go.

Microsoft thought users were feature-hungry when really they were tired of spending untold hours troubleshooting problems that should have never occurred.

For Windows 7 they need a killer app or two that goes beyond gamers, they need to emphasize stability, they've got to STOP ORPHANING programs or printers, and they've still got to be prepared for slow adoption because people will probably have to buy an entire new computer to run it!

*** So despite my disappointment as a gamer, Vista is actually a really excellent OS for everything else. ***

Uh, no actually, it's not. It's junk. Our IT department has been inundated with extra support work since they started buying machines with Vista. We've gone back to XP where possible. We will NOT run Vista on any production servers.

Well, as someone who uses a PC primarily to game and secondary for everything else ('cause if I just wanted to use the internet and MS Office applications I could just use any of my older computers), I think Vista is a fiasco. But that's because I'm a gamer not capable of playing my older games that ran fine on XP SP2. Again, I can't stress how much gaming is responsible for the spread of bad talk about Vista. If Vista had been able to captured the respect of hardcore gamers then any trash talking of Vista would probably be limited to just the iWhores.

So despite my disappointment as a gamer, Vista is actually a really excellent OS for everything else. Like this article pointed out, people have been using XP for years and years and people are always going to moan and groan whenever changes take place.

But again, if Microsoft wants to earn massive popular respect for Vista, it has to start with gamers being able to play their games. The only way that's going to happen is by providing more support for running older games in Vista. If they can accomplish this, Microsoft wouldn't need to invest hundreds of millions in advertisement campaigns.

*** Just because the dumbass didn't have the battery installed firmly does not mean that Vista is faulty. ***

The battery wasn't the problem, moron. He removed the battery to reset the system.

    Vista is GARBAGE.

  • Posted By: markci @ 09/22/2008 8:57:24 PM

Vista is junk, plain and simple. It shipped on my laptop, which is a $2800 Dell, so there is no question about proper setup or drivers or the machine being underpowered. Yet it is painfully slow to start up, use and shut down. Browsing the local hard drive I can 30 seconds or more while it's doing who knows what Sometimes it never comes back at all. It has problems shutting down too - once I nearly fried my machine because I put it away in its case and it never shut down.

Just because the CEO's battery was not firmly in place does not necessarily mean that vista is faulty.

For a computer challenged, barely computer literate, person such as myserlf it's evident it's safest to stick with XP, and I intend to do so.

I'm an OEM microsoft reseller - My company moves over 300,000 PC units a year. At our last board meeting, we determined that the backlash from Vista was so great that we would from 2009 sell only linux and mac products to corporate customers after 21 years of promoting microsoft, since msdos. Our customers demand more that this - we have to provide it. Sorry Bill.

I put Vista on my Dell XPS410 right when it came out. I have 4GB memory and good video, etc. I had minor little glitches but all-in-all everything went smooth. I have updated all of my software to newer version sice Vista was launched and installed all updates. My Vista runs great and is a visually stunning OS IMHO. I think if someone spends the time to update their drivers and software they would be very happy with Vista. If I had an old clunker PC i am sure my opinion would be different.

Yup. Bought a Mac after more than two decades as a PC user. I'll never look back.

  • Posted By: TheFactChecker @ 09/22/2008 7:15:17 PM

I have decided on buying a Mac next time. Microsoft has such a big ego that its attitude turns off people like me. For instance, Microsoft acts like it does not care about problems with Vista. Then when they defend themselves from Mac's ads, it insults us with stupid ones. I bet that Microsoft will be blind when a somebody comes up with a new OS for PCs.

One problem that Microsoft has, is that it does not have full control of the PC product like Macs have. The other is that there are a bunch of egotistacal morons at Microsoft.

My new Inspiron 1525 came with Vista. All was fine for 3 weeks, until last Tuesday, when Vista automatically (my fault; should have disabled this) downloaded an update. Upon rebooting, it did not recognize my user password. After 45 minutes on the phone, we did a rollback, My password works again, but I cannot access the internet, not even directly wired to the modem. A second call to MS did nothing to solve the problem. They say it must be my modem or router, even though 2 other computers in the house have no problem with internet access. If it weren't so expensive, I'd buy the MacBook.

I know that life goes on and everything floats downstream, but my network uses XPs and I have no problem with them; they're as rock solid as any Microsoft product can be. I also know that within a few years, MS will stop supporting XP, because if you haven't jumped on the Viagra (whoops, I meant Vista) bandwagon by now, they're going to give you a boost, like it or not. I don't like change; it takes time from my busy day, and I have better things to do. Please, MS, let me keep what I've got and you keep supporting it for a few more years. I promise to retire and then, and for all I care, you can release a re-vamped version of ME.

I dunno, realneil. I have Vista Business x64 running on a Quad/8GB Gigabyte-based system: no issues. Ditto with my Vista Business x86 running on a Core2Duo/4GB Dell Inspiron 1720: no issues. I've helped about 50 people buy Vista-based systems since the summer and--since SP1--no issues to report. Just amaxingly satisfied users, only one report of Spyware, taken care of by Windows Defender (my bad for disabling UAC on a platform used by a n00b). And that, my friend, is what makes it worth the price, together with the exceptional features that I continually discover. Like hooking up a projector or network printer. Absolutely painless. Scheduled defrag and updates makes the whole thing idiot proof for the most part. And have you noticed how regularly used programs load up wicked fast? Vista slices up Photoshop CS3 like a juicy turkey on your Thanksgiving table.

And the recent MS adverts? Yeah, Apple has been hammering the PC seteotype home for some time now, 'bout time MS stood up and told it like it is: "this is my office, territory that no Mac dare venture into 'cause it just don't cut it." Keep your Mactoid toy if it gives your ego some necessary strokes, but it's a PC world, my friend. And a darned nice one at that!
