I have considerable contempt for Microsoft products. VISTA wouldn't recognize my CD drives. I switched to XP. I have had several years of bliss. I suggest Microsoft be honest enough in their advertisement to show VISTA on the subject's own computer. Let's see how pleased the test subjects are when their software won't respond and the hardware is unrecognized.

Shitsa still sucks. I own a computer company in San Diego and I can't give it away. The reason we all know on the big numbers of Shitsa sold is Office Depot and Staples notebooks and cheap cheap computers with Shitsa on it collecting dust. Give me a break $icrosoft.....your Shitsa OS is the worst since DOS 6.0....XP is stable, fast and very very reliable in all aspects of the PC world.

I am so glad that the bar has been set as "I have ran it without problems." Thank goodness. An operating system came out that "ran without problems." Is this really the best we can hope for. I read the comments below and I am waiting for the innovative and wonderful features that make my computer experience better. Who has some?

my iphone has a lot more problems than either of my pc's running vista. my iphone freezes and locks up, my vista pc doesn't. my iphone has mandatory updates to make it function, my vista pc functions fine with or without updates. yeah, the seinfield commercials were stupid. they didn't make any sense at all. but the fact that my iphone cost nearly as much as my vista laptop makes me a pc fan. also, why pay twice as much for a macbook? i think people just love to have microsoft, even though it makes a decent product at a decent price. btw, i'm a 29 year old and known in my circle as an "early adopter" of technology. i always have the coolest new gadgets & gizmos, but i've stuck with pc over linux & mac through the years - and i don't regret it.

"Vista's slow, it's fat, my software doesn't work, I can't get drivers, the User Access Control's a pain in the ass and my network grinds to a crawl when I play an mp3! What do you call that????

Vista's problem can be summed up quite simply: Vista does nothing better, faster or more reliably, running on the same hardware, than the operating system it was supposed to replace. After 25 years of working with Microsoft operating systems, I can pretty much say that it is the worst release the company has ever made - and my clients, who are overwhelmingly staying with XP, agree. The problem for Microsoft is to make sure that they don't make it "two in a row" with Vista's soon-to-appear successor.

I have been a computer user when dos started and up till now I have used every microsoft operting system they have come out with to me xp has been the best to use. My problem with microsoft is their systems are not safe they should pay more attention to safety than all the fancy operting systems, that's why I use mozilla firefox when I use microsoft msn through verizon.( Microsoft step up to the plate and think safety first ).

Why do they make money on the Vista? Because they got computer makers to only sell their new computers with Vista in them. Giving the monopoly the Gates has created, they had little chance of fighting it.. Thus it's not the Vista that is so much in demand, it's the fact that it is now very difficult for the average, uninformed buy to get a better system and one that isn't a gigabyte hog as everything MS designs with the thirst for mb's.

I first started on a computer with dos and have used every operation system that microsoft has invented and to me xp was the best so far, my problem is I'm tired of all the updates I wish they would pay more attention to making their software safer, I'm at the point now I use mozilla firefox. What microsoft needs to do is pay more attention to security of their software and less about all the fancy operating systems.

I wonder how many of these nay-sayers actually run Vista. It runs just fine on my PC. Starts up in 10-15 seconds. And I don't have a lightweight set of background programs. I'm lazy and run about 50 background services for development purposes that I really shouldn't, but hey, my PC seems to handle it fine with Vista. Nor is my PC some kind of super computer; Its about 6 months old and I bought components that were sub-state of the art to save money. Its just "current". It catches viruses that my supposed virus scanner doesn't. It has a very pretty UI (if that matters, as it seems to Mac users), automates my hijacking of other people's unsecured WAPs (probably foolish Mac users themselves) along with a plethora of other niceties. Things that, I could agree, should have been there years ago, are now there. If anything, that was justification enough for me to buy Vista.

Think I'm a Microsoft totey? I write, compile and debug C++ applications with Eclipse + CDT + MinGW GCC with GDB just fine on Vista (an all Open Source config because I do not want MS licensing in any form on my programs). I use Google Chrome, just fine. My games, run just the way they should. I even upgraded straight from XP without a "fresh install". Could it be that these people need to upgrade that antiquated box of transistors they call a PC? I think so.

I used to loathe MS, still do really, but if you want to run the latest games you got to have a Windows OS. I was wary of Vista at first, but they did a fairly good job on it. Of course, I was intelligent enough to wait for the first service pack to go out and buy it and make my final decision. Any complex system (dual use there) is going to have problems at first. Especially one designed to support a broad range of hardware vice a targeted throw-away platform (ie, Macs) like OSX or w/e. Need those new device drivers as well. I am assuming MacOS runs perfect all the time because of all these bombshells thrown at MS from Mac users. And Linux... its a nice idea, but I digress to my need for mainstream applications like games.

And BTW, if you want to run DirectX 10 games, you'll need Vista. There is, and never will be, DX10 for XP. Developers, thus far, have been kind enough to support DX9 with reduced "shiney" for now. No telling how long that will last.

If Microsoft has sold 180 million Vista, you can rest assured that there are at least 175 million unhappy customers. I bought a new gateway computer with Vista because I had always found Microsoft programs to be top line. I love XP. I would give anything to have my old HP with XP back. The only thing this new computer is good for is to read my E-mail and half the time that does not work. Microsoft has even tried to update my program on line and cannot do that because Vista does not work. Plus I noticed while they were trying to update my system, three different times my virus control stopped three different virious.

MicroSoft vs Apple is about Old vs Young, it is a generational thing, period. MACs are pretty on the outside and the user interface is equally pretty. They appeal to the "whatever" generation that is anything but technical and thinks that a "driver" is the person behind the wheel of a car. MicroSoft has 90% of the market because they had a head start in the business world which at the time did not trust Apple to handle business applications and rightly so, at the time it couldn't nor was Apple particularly interested in that market. If MicroSoft really wanted to make Windows as sexy as MAC it could, but why should it? If you have 90% of the market who cares why waste the cash trying to outdo a company that is a fraction of the size with a miniscule part of the market? MicroSoft is not trying to appeal to the kids. It is trying to appeal to the boomers that STILL drive the market. The stradegy is not bad, being a part of the boomer generation, I naturally find Apple's commercials obnoxious, arrogant and full of themselves, big suprise there. What I am waiting to see is if MicroSoft indeed has something to show me in Vista that would make me want it. Show me something as sexy as MAC but also appeals to the "techie" in me. Show me something that does what MAC does at half the cost, something that can run on an older system and still run rings around Apple. Come on MicroSoft, with 90% of the market share and the money you have in your pocket? If you can't do that, don't let the screen door hit you on the way out the door...

"pressed the power button, and ??? nothing"

"Finally he removed the battery and snapped it back into place. The machine started up???slowly".

    Good one.

Could it have been the fault with the "gorgeous new top-of- the-line notebook " issue which the clever CEO conveniently turned into a Vista issue?

Vista had a lot of issues with 3rd party drivers but I have never heard of computer not booting up because of Vista.

"Many consumers like me, who'd bought new PCs loaded with Vista, reloaded them with XP."

"Yet the fact that Microsoft has to run ads like that speaks to the kind of perception problems Vista has had"

Mojave experiment is for people like you - You talk of technology day in and day out but still believe CEOs who say that a hardware issue is related to the OS.

I have heard and seen about every comment except one discussed here, There are NO! (NONE!) personal firewalls that work with Vista ,AVG Symantec and others admit on their pages that it is incompatible.
Microsoft's firewall only works to stop out incoming but does nothing the other way around.
So if you download a malicious file it is free to contact the web and compromise you.

There is this thing called google, you might have heard of it try : vista firewall

Local car dealership commercials star the owners and the owners wife and kids, Microsoft's campaign starring Bill Gates is exactly the same minus the shouting and balloons. He's ruining his company's reputation through bad marketing advice. He looks kinda shrew-like anyway and should remain behind the camera.

Placing the owner of a company is a sign of failure or cheapness like a local car dealership.

Vista was rushed out the door because of the flak they were getting for taking 5 years between revisions, even though Service Pack 2 for XP should have been a re-release just as all the service packs for OSX are considered to be a new OS. At this point It is cleaned up, finished and *IS* a better OS than XP

The reason enterprises aren't going to Vista yet is because they want to maintain standards to make support easier (only have to maintain 1 set of drivers/applications/troubleshooting guide) and 90% of enterprises have software packages that still aren't Vista ready.

Oh, and just a little heads up... If a machine doesn't boot, and you have to remove the battery and re-install it to restore functionality... it's a hardware issue.

    • Posted By: jabberwolf @ 09/21/2008 11:25:45 AM

OSX comes out with a SERVICE pack every year or year and a half.
The only difference, you are forced to pay for it!

OSX still has the worst security, and is the slowest at releasing fixes for them. This isnt my opinion but every security forum.... well except maybe places like mac insider.

Vista is unstable, full of deficiencies and not safe. After the automatic "Windows Update" feature tried to download the SP1 on my expesnsive desktop computer, it created a loop followed by a complete crash. The recovery tools would not even recognize the hard disk. Microsoft's explanation: "there are issues with interrupted SP1 downloads" (!). Some of the technicians (mostly based in India) admitted getting hundreds of calls on the same subject and were unable to help. I finally had to boot my system with an old (legal) XP disk and had it at least recognize drive C:\ . All data was lost and I would go back to XP except there are no effective drivers for my system except with Vista. Bottom line : Vista is slow, bloated and very fragile. If you have the choice, decline the on-line download of SP 1 or at lease make sure your data is backed up....

I have been using MS operationg systems since the days of DOS , early Windows, Millenuim, and XP. The latest, Vista, is clearly technically deficient and was introduced to the market to make extra millions for Microsoft against the interests of the users. Shame on a Company that used to be the leading edge in technology. The writer is right: Appole is way better.

    • Posted By: jabberwolf @ 09/21/2008 11:20:50 AM

Just because you have had an issue with Vista and couldnt just stop the update and restart it again is not everyone's problem. Just because you couldnt click on it and mark the install, do not request again, is not everyone's problem. Or you not booting up to go to "last good boot" is not everyone's problem.

But you trying to make up a story where you HAVE to reformat your drive, is kinda funny and is a good example to everyone the "tech elite" wanting people to not use Vista and use Vista.

The sad thing is Apple users can't even BS any tech knowledge, even halfway decent, to make up a vista horror story!

I have two Computers with VISTA on them. I have not had any problems with VISTA. I thing many of you complainers are like people that I know that are to lasy or to stupid to learn about Computers, and when you dont know how to work with somethin and you dont want to take time to learn you blame the Company whose product you are using. As much of bad publicity there is out there, why would you buy the Product, you have other choices. You dont like Vista but a Mac. Microsoft is a company that puts out and sells a

Product just like thousand of other Companies, if you dont like that product you dont like
the way it works why buy it. I have two Computer with Vista on the one HP other
Costume Built by me, I'v done all the updates I use Word I do Photo, and I never have a
problem. I'm sitting here wonderin of what you people are talking about. Most Programs
that work with XP work with Vista. Example, on my HP Computer I have connected a
Dlink Wireless Network addaptor. There are no Vista drivers for this Dlink Wireless
Adaptor, so I'm useing XP divers, and I'm connected to the Internet right now with reading
your negative comment and writing this reply. No I dont work for Microsoft.
