Honestly, I have not had any problems with Vista. I think people are exaggerating the problems and just want to play that age old blame game. What else do I move to? Mac? HELL NOOOO!!! Linux? Not good for office stuff (but great for server). Online os? Maybe.

Windows Vista brings absolutely nothing positive to the table. It's a bloated, slow, buggy, mess. On top of that, everything was moved around for no apparrent reason. I don't think they've made a more useless product since Microsoft Bob. Honestly, I don't know why anyone buys this crap, except for the fact that they either don't know of, or don't have any other choice. I've never been a fan of the Windows OS, but there is a lot of great software out there written for it, none of which I know require Vista, and many which don't work properly or at all with it. Sorry if I'm being overly negative, but seriously, why on Earth would I want to run Vista on my machine?

post script: my Vista desktop often won't wake up from sleep either, if I have left no windows open. Not a BIOS or hardware problem! We hold down the power button 4 or 5 times a week.

Apple users tend to be the kind of people marketers refer to as "influencers" or "tech elites". I see
"You fly business class and you see nothing but MACs" . Wow, I see now why this guy is a "former" Microsoft exec. The guy doesn't understand that MAC users are nothing but people who like to show-off. If Microsoft starts offering an expensive looking machine loaded with Vista, all business class flyers will be seen using windows Vista. Is there anything that can be done on a MAC and not on a PC? I don't think so. So why spend twice or even more than that on a product that basically does not offer anything extra ordinary? The answer to the question is: Mac users just want to look different and want to tell the people around them that they are somehow better than them and articles such as this really reinforces the idea by calling MAC users "trendsetters". Mac is BS!

I've had Vista on my HP Pavilion since I bought it 18 months ago. It freezes and requires hard reboot. It's slow. Problems with the video. Incompatibility with software. Can't find files. Sidebar disappeared, even though it "loads" each time. I am too cheap and lazy to re-load it with XP, but I want to.

I Should also mention I use all Mozilla (Tbird & Firefox3) software for email and browsing. I use Itunes (apple) and My podder (portable .. U3 version), so it is not just MS stuff I am using on my vista machines. They work flawlessly for me, but I change the oil and check the tires on regular basis.

I have vista on two newer laptops and it works great now. I did have driver issues, issues with file management (it wouldn't let me delete AVI Video files that filled my hard drive ... not a problem any more), and control issues (it didn't want to give control as the administrator at first). Wish the vista update everything is good now and I really like it.
One is a Core duo 32bit, the other an AMD Dual core 64bit (this one rocks and is the best computer I have had in my 19 years of computnig).

My family has been very since we purchased and installed copies last March on 3 computers in our home. As the tech support guy for the family I have never been happier or seen a more reliable OS- over a year and a half with no problems on a relatively new OS is amazing. Our xbox accesses the HD and cable tv shows that are tivo'd through media center which is simple enough for my wife and 3 year old to control.

My first computer in the 90s was a MAC. Loooking back yes it was sleek and trendy, but it was expensive and I had my fair share of sad macs and mac bombs- it wasn't perfect! Its frustrating to see all these dumd articles- I obviously have been very happy and people just assume their true and don't even bother to check Vista. Its too sad, but happiness doesn't sell newspapers- fear and gloom do.

Vow, quite a few vista supporters here. My Toshiba came with a Vista and is a disastor. I am now using debian, and it is ATLEAST 3 times faster. To all who support Vista, you probably have a higher RAM. When comparing OS, atleast we have to see both the utility and performance. Even if the utility of Vista is higher, it can be useful on a faster processor. But, given the sheer performance of an OS, Vista is a disaster.

maybe the laptop was bad, why do they instantly blame Microsoft. remember he was trying a demo of a new laptop still in development. of course there is going to be bugs on that laptop.

Linux does it all for me. Boots in 75 seconds. The notebooks run cool there being no need for background, MIPs eating activities, and the software is free! Why do I have to pay for an installed OS and software on a new computer when I'm going to install and use my own, far better, hassle-free OS? IMNSHO, Windows 98SE was the last decent version M$ offered. Non-geeks might want to try Ubuntu as an alternative to Windoze. Installs easily and quickly -- and there's no need to use the command line to get things going.

If Microsoft would just shut the hell up and let creatives in the ad agency world make the decisions, they could probably sell some product. It's obvious that non-creative execs from the black tower have too much to do with "creative" conceptual thinking. They'll never learn.

my iphone has a lot more problems than either of my pc's running vista. my iphone freezes and locks up, my vista pc doesn't. my iphone has mandatory updates to make it function, my vista pc functions fine with or without updates. yeah, the seinfield commercials were stupid. they didn't make any sense at all. but the fact that my iphone cost nearly as much as my vista laptop makes me a pc fan. also, why pay twice as much for a macbook? i think people just love to have microsoft, even though it makes a decent product at a decent price. btw, i'm a 29 year old and known in my circle as an "early adopter" of technology. i always have the coolest new gadgets & gizmos, but i've stuck with pc over linux & mac through the years - and i don't regret it.

My 2 Iphones have had much more trouble than my Vista 64 pc ever had, period. I would not know how Vista was when it came out. Or, how it was when this "fuming" CEO got it back in 2007 (When it was just released). I do know that I prefer Vista over XP and over my Mac for my my games, business, email, and surfing the web. Apple is no better than Microsoft. Apple will get worst with popularity as it has to support every code and driver like Microsoft atleast tries to do. XP had bugs when it came out. Iphone and every Mac product has had to ahve updates. The problem is Microsoft has had more to update.

Ummm OMG he had to unplug it.. RUN.. I have never had to go to a PC store to fix a software problem with a PC. But, every apple product has seen a shop...

The autor of this article as "Fake Steve Jobs", so it has a lot of FUD. Apple is selling a lot of Macs because it can run Windows. And guess what's the first and main reason to get a Mac from Apple website ? Because it can run Windows and Office (http://www.apple.com/getamac/faq/). How pathetic is that ?

I used XP at work from shortly after first release. Like all Microsoft programming, it was slow, derivative, ugly, clumsy. But it worked. I am now using Vista, and it is a glitch a week for over a year now. Currently, Outlook puts certain mail into spam no matter what I do, and lets through spam, no matter what I do. A co-worker ahd the worst freeze I have ever seen on a PC this week. He had to unplug it from the wall to restore it to functionality. Whatever the Microsofties have to say, I say bunk. This OS is a nightmare. As they used to advise all students at the introductory Computer Science courses where I went to school (1976-1980): "Garbage in, garbage out."

All I can say is, Microsoft had it right with XP, but now they are forcing the inferior product on consumers. My husband depend on his computer for our livlihood, yet when he ordered a new PC with the Vista (which we did not want), his stock trading program was not compatible. We had to "downgrade" to XP on his new computer and fortunately at the time, Dell was still offering it. My laptop is starting to limp along and I dread buying a new PC because I will lose the fabulous XP I enjoy and be forced to Vista if I remain with Dell or other PC manufacturers. As a consumer who supports the Microsoft billion dollar business, I do not appreciate their deciding for me. So, I'm about to say 'Hello, Mac.' As for the Seinfeld ads...where can I get those groovy shoes?

  • Posted By: paradimn @ 09/20/2008 8:46:59 PM

Any one who has trasitioned from XP to Vista must acknowldege the loss of functionality. Microsoft got it wrong and to claim other wise is to ignore the facts. Expensive adds won't fix Vista. Microsoft should be putting its money into its products and customers. Otherwise there will be a growing migration to Apple, I know my next computer will not be a Vista machine.

HP didn't start its "sidestepping" with Vista, they began that before Vista existed. They did it when all they had was XP too, and as you grudgingly admit, XP works, you are being deceitful to suggest that it is evidence of their supposed lack of faith in Vista.

Your bias becomes apparent when you try to argue that Microsoft Vista both has a bad image, and doesn't work AND deride Microsoft for running ads proving otherwise. As if they should fit in your pocket, and how dare their global dominance act like it.

The ads with Seinfeld and Gates were creative to say the least. They explicity based the entire second commercial with Gates and Seinfeld believing they were 'out of touch' which directly addresses your complaint about Seinfeld yet you completely ignored that fact. If you had taken one step beyond your own opinion you might have looked into how most people reacted. Youtube and many commercial forums were abuzz with fervor over the ads, which means that at the very least the ads promoted further discussion of PCs beyond "I'm a PC and I'm always inept." Those Mac ads are absurd. They use the tired tactic of not promoting their product, but mocking something most people love. I remember when they used to actually advertise their computers. When was the last time you saw an iMac on TV? All I remember are the models from the 1999-2000 ads. I didn't even know they stopped using those old CRT screens.

I love a lot of Apple's products. I don't have some brand fetish, so I find your entire article to be a pointless attack against Microsoft.

Also, I thought it was pretty funny that this very website appears to be running on Microsoft Windows Server using ASP .NET. Not that this is necessarily relevant to Vista, but it's still funny that this site doesn't run OSX Server or even any of the many great Linux alternatives out there.

Very well put! I'm so sick of fanboy articles and Newsweek is too well respected a magazine to have such opinionated garbage.
